I successfully did it! You may want to warn future viewers that if the filter housing has separated a bit, the wire mesh is a bit deadly to hands.

Thank you very good concise video. One tip the screws often have stripped out the plastic threads they screw into so you'll have to push up on them from under.

I recently discovered this can also apply to the 1st generation Escapes as well. Not sure if all earlier years are the same but our 2003 also had the cabin air filter box in this location without a filter in it (it is more rectangular than this one though).

That is strange that they had a provision for the filter but no filter. I bought a filter from Wix (the filter from the dealer was on back order) and it didn't fit perfectly.
