I found this sound as half calming, half alarming. Similar goes for London's old British Carter and Castel Castings sirens! The Air raid warning signal frightens me, makes me feel alarmed. The all Clear signal makes me feel relieved, calm.
I grew up listening to this siren every Monday. Now I'm more than 5K miles away in California I strangely miss it. When I visited this past Christmas I made sure I was up with the windows open so I could hear it, despite my jet-lag.
@jackcashel Both of those points have been addressed in previous comments. The 'buzzing' noise that you hear is resonance, possibly from within the solenoid mechanisms. It doesn't serve a warning purpose, and is not audible from a distance. There are not two sirens; the siren is on the tower in the background (on the left in this video), and the tower in the foreground (on the right in this video) is a venting chimney to remove underground gases.
I'm interest in these - when I used to stay with my Nan as a kid, I remember these sirens. My nan lived in Bracknell and you could hear them from far away. Perhaps the local siren was the one at Bracknell station. Someone did a movie on yt of that one, but cannot find it now.
In the US, We have sirens that can do Hi-Lo Also, But don’t Work like this. Instead, We close the output of the sound with the damper (shutter). However The Federal Signal 3T22 DOES Close the intakes with the dampers for Hi-Lo. It’s pretty much a CS8 That Is Mounted Vertical With Horns. The Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1003 Is one of the ones that closes The Output.
There used to be a siren on the roof of Bracknell college. I remeber an escape some time in the 80s. I was in the 6th form at school and was 6"2. My 5"4 mum had to come and collect me as no one was allowed out until the all clear was sounded. He was caught the next day trying to sell his watch in Great Hollands shops less than 10 minutes from the hospital. It was both exciting and really eerie when itwhen off anytime other than the 1000 test.
I visited broadmoor a week ago as part of my training, its such an incredible facility and kinda scary on the inside. the security inside is unbelievable, higher than anything ive seen. Its hard to imagine how anyone could escape ?!
The sound that haunted my childhood. 'look out everyone, the bogeyman is on the loose' I remember at least two occasions it went 'for real' and we were kept home from school, and not allowed out to play. Still makes the hairs on the back of my neck go up. Brrrrrrrr. Be safe, girls and boys..... for there are mad,bad men among us.
@blackkey1976 these sirens were used as the alarm system at Broadmoor Hospital, a forensic psychiatry, or in more common words a lunatic's asylum. They were tested each Monday at 10am until last year, when due to the new building being opened and the rising costs and defects of a system which has been around for 5 decades, the sirens were decomissioned, there is one siren left now within the hospital premises, which is silently tested.
@defysquirrel189 I believe that it is a venting chimney for removing gases from underground. There are four of them around the cell-phone tower, which is just out of shot to the right.
In the States, a faster version of the Hi Lo signal was once used for alerting call firefighters in many areas where the local CD/Weather Siren doubled as the Fire Station Siren.
wesleyville ontario canada has one of these cs8s at the nuclear power plant set to hilo only its now tested with all the other but modern day electronic sirins every other month
@jackcashel No, I was far enough away that it couldn't damage my hearing. This isn't actually too loud by siren standards - it is 'only' 109dB @ 100 ft. Compared to something like a Sentry 40V2T, this is almost quiet!
@RainbowUapa I believe that there are three sirens in Crowthorne; one at the station, one at the TRL and one at Broadmoor Hospital itself. The siren at the station is probably the easiest to see, as it is very close to the station car park and only a few metres away from the end of the platform. ^_^
just to put into perspective how old this clip is, the siren had the original all-grey paint, not even the orange or blue one, AND the shutter was not jammed. (i think it got jammed when the siren was painted?)

I miss Berkshire so much :-( Please, what siren do you think I would hear from Crowthorne? Hope to be there again one monday to listen to it! *.*
2:48 Every CS8 I've heard when it winds down with the shutters closed always resonates in that weird way. I wonder why that is though I'm guessing it just has to do with the resonance of the two tones at that particular pitch.
A Federal Sign & Signal Type 7OC was documented doing that as well. I'm not sure if its the same reason for both sirens, since the 7OC has a big plunger that jams into the rotor, while the CS8 has a damper plate. Probably an air flow thing though. th-cam.com/video/-hUD2R4UXvs/w-d-xo.html
I heard one of the Broadmoor sirens go off every Monday when I worked at Arborfield Garrison in the 1980s. I didnt realise there were several...the workers just called it the siren at Broadmoor and explained it was a hospital. Eerie sound but intriguing used to wonder what it looked like and how it made that haunting, distant wailing...
Because they are used to warn of a hospital patient's escape. The first Hi-Lo signal is attack/escape. The second steady tone is the all clear/patient recovered.
It is likely all sirens are tested at once to check the system can handle it. I think the thing on the pole is a flood light or something? It makes sense to have one.
@pauly7112 This siren is near Ascot. The siren in Camberley is on top of the Main Square car park; as far as I know, it's not easily visible, but it is certainly audible...
@HotTop202 The main differences between a 1000T and a 1003 are the solenoid valves that allow the siren to produce a Hi-Lo or Pulse signal - the 1003 is equipped with solenoids and the 1000T is not. As such, the 1003 can produce a Hi-Lo signal and the 1000T cannot. The solenoids can be seen as the 'bowtie' at the base of the horn.
@hootergirlsrhot Perhaps partly, but not entirely. Remember, sound comes from the intake as well as from the ports. This model is not as large as a 3T22, and the model that is, the CS12, is about as loud as the Federal. The main difference between a vertical design (like the 3T22) and a horizontal design (like the CS8) is not so much the sound output as the sound coverage pattern - a vertical siren produces a circular coverage pattern, whereas a horizontal siren produces more of a figure-eight.
