- Well, it's time to get back to posting some good singing again.
Today we have the wonderful Renata Tebaldi singing Rossini's 'La regata Veneziana' from a 1965 concert. Introduced by Dr. Boyd Neel. Tebaldi sings in Venitian dialect.

Donna d'eleganza suprema. Voce maestosa e nel contempo dolcissima. Caratteristiche che rendono la Tebaldi una vera stella del bel canto italiano e non. Ne avverto la mancanza.
I saw Renata Tebaldi in 1969 at the Metropolitan Opera in Lincoln Center NYC in "Tosca". I can still see and hear her across all these decades.

Well, Ponselle, Wunderlich, Merrill, singers of that nature. But as I said, there is some 'raw' quality in Corelli and Tebaldi's voices which is simply addicting. Can't describe it.

What an angelic voice! Thank you for giving me so much listening pleasure over the years and for raising me from my depression. I regret that you never married and had a daughter with an operatic voice to carry on your legacy. You were truly a great lady with a heart of gold, unlike the unmentionable rival who once said comparing her to you was like comparing champagne to coke-a-cola.

Νο, "La Divina" was Maria Callas. Tebaldi was known as "The voice of an Angel". :)

I agree that those voices are addicting; they bypass all the regulations and all the stops, not formal beauty, they are too luxuriant to be nicely trimmed and clipped. They are ecstatic excess. Ponselle, though, sometimes allows herself to go there.

She had such beautiful voice that she just needed to let those notes float to enchant. Not other ornaments or coloratura were needed.
