The stage presence is outworldly. Few modern singers can command the stage as she did. Singers of the same calibre as Tebaldi are deeply missed. Truly mesmerizing.
Renata Tebaldi was my late mother's favorite soprano, for obvious reasons.

Chi è chiuso nelle proprie convinzioni ha preclusioni e critiche a braccio e fuori contesto. Ringraziamo invece di avete avuto voci di questo calibro con generosità...nel canto spianato o nei virtuosismi ... oggi purtroppo ci si contenta delle "sciantose" alla Netrebko... non ci sono vedovi del gossip ma vedovi/e della grande lirica....

è Stata una voce d'angelo in alcune occasioni ma anche molto carnale in altre! come qui ! dico pure che la sua voce era fisicamente bella e piena di armonici! anche i piani e pianissimi non sono un sussurro falsettistico come in altre cantanti ma. perfettamente sostenuti sul fiato! come si fa poi a dire che è fredda interprete per me resta un mistero! è sempre coinvolta e coinvolgente ! nata per questa parte! con la olivero la migliore Adriana di sempre! per me è chiaro! ma anche per tanti altri se la finissero di ascoltare senza pregiudizi! ogni artista è unico e irripetibile! alcuni le hanno scritto autentici insulti che evidentemente per me non merita! visto che poi sono disposti ad ascoltare i dischi o andare a teatro ed a applaudire. gente che in confronto ad artiste come queste abbaiano ma hanno la fortuna di avere un altro cognome!

Renata Tebaldi como ninguna otra cantante no tenía notas de pasaje entre los diferentes registros, eso le permitió cantar con morbidez, poder, musicalidad, belleza incomparable y a la vez perjudicaba la emisión de algunos agudos, lo cual no importó a cientos de millones de sus seguidores. Si para emitir ciertos agudos a la perfección hubiera tenido que sacrificar el resto de lo que hacía la humanidad habría perdido a una voz irrepetible. Renata Tebaldi con o sin agudos fue una super nova en el universo de la opera duelale a quien le duela. Gracias Signorina Tebaldi por regalarnos tanta belleza
depende de que Tebaldi, la Tebaldi de la Missa de Requiem 1950 la voz es perfecta desde la primera nota hasta el ultimo agudo, lo mismo su Wally La Scala 1953, su primera Aida con Erede de 1952, en realidad todo lo que cantó hasta 1958 los agudos son excelentes y entre otras caracteristicas, una caracteristica de Tebaldi es cantar del Do central hasta el Do agudo sin que su voz pierda calidad, inclusive el timbre jamas se empobrecía , ni en los agudos en fortissimo

Ahh, that voice. Though this is wonderful, nothing compares to her live performances. The size of the voice was incredible as heard at the Met. I saw Tebaldi in: Adriana, Otello, Boheme, Tosca, Falstaff, Gioconda, Fanciulla, Andrea Chenier.
No one today, comes close to Tebaldi.

Such a wonderfully steady voice.None of that excessive vibrato that seems to be the norm these days. Glorious..only the final phrase needs more of a floating sound.

Callas was NOT jealous of her. Callas admired talent. And Tebaldi had talent. The whole rivalry thing was created by the press. Sutherland was a friend of both Tebaldi and Caballe. She obviously thought Tebaldi had a beautiful voice.

***** You're right that I'm Italian. But I do have a little Spanish blood as well. From what I heard from Zeffirelli, Sutherland and Callas are heads and shoulders above jealousy. No one else is in their league.
I think no singer, even the very greatest, is perfect…And I think that both Callas and Tebaldi, as well as Sutherland, had certain specific things that made then stand out,,,Callas had an unmatched musical and dramatic ability as well as an incredible range, Sutherland had extraordinary equality through the range and agility, but Tebaldi had without a doubt the most beautiful, luscious timber and her legato was to die for…And I think no human being can ever escape from jealousy, which to me is not necessairly an evil feeling, it pushes you to do your best and strive for what people have and you don't.

Toscanini called her la voce d'angelo and she's remained that for the operatic world...Callas was jealous of her tone and phrasing...Sutherland or Caballe admired her, specially Caballe considered her as an idol...people from all over the world still praise the perfection of her instrument...but nah, the truth is musicians and directors have always been deaf and the public paying to see her or hear her on discs are just a bunch of masochistics, THANKS for enlightening us with your Golden Ears!:)

Yeah, everyone one from her collegues (Caballe, Callas, Berganza, Bergonzi, Sutherland) to conductors (Toscanini calling her voce d'angelo) to opera critics (the great Celletti) considered her as the most beautiful and perfect voice, but to YOU, with that stupid name writing some crap on youtube, she's tone deaf...Keep on believing it man! maybe some day the world will follow you! ;)
If only the dolts at the Met had let Ponselle sing this -- the only role she ever requested.

You really don't know what Celletti wrote...
Tebaldi sounds OK here, but if you compare her singing here to the 1955 version (also on TH-cam), you can hear the difference that six years made in her voice. The 1955 version sounds like pitchers of cream from start to finish. Here, the middle and the top sound congested and less free. Compare the two versions =-== this one and the one from 1955 (from a studio recording) and you will surely hear the difference. She's actually past her absolute prime here.
That having been said, Tebaldi "past her prime" is still superior to any lirico-spinto of her generation, not to speak of those who try to sing her repertoire in our times.
I agree with you, just listened to 55. But sopranos do age, even lirico-spintos like Tebaldi. The only soprano in my galaxy who got better and better with age was Flagstad. Her career was like weight-building in her own words, and her international debut came when she was almost 40. That is a very special voice category, and as you probably know most lyric sopranos do not last far beyond 45 or so. Still, the beauty of Tebaldi's voice and her musicianship even past her prime are incomparable. Look at what we've got today - people like Netrebko trying to sing Elsa and Trovatore? !!!

ALSO true! But Tebaldi never sang Trovatore on stage. She only did the London recording because she hadn't cultivated a florid bel canto technique to do the coloratura, which is pretty blemished on the recording. How Netrebko would handle Elsa is anyone's guess. She hasn't sung it yet that I know of.
A friend of mine shared a link documenting Netrebko's debut as Elsa at a German opera house and I just don't remember which it was. I know that Tebaldi never did Trovatore on stage but I love that recording, especially being a big fan of MDM. According to Tebaldi herself in an interview I found here on youtube, the reason she did not do Trovatore on stage was that she considered this to be a true dramatic soprano role, and that she as a spinto was not quite up to it. She was comparing her career decisions to singers of our times, where sopranos with voices like tiny little gnats (she says "piccole, piccole, piccole mosche") think they can sing just about anything - and of course end up ruining the little voices they have!

Those Italian sopranos had scrumptious sounds, didn't they? Such a beautiful color to their sound. Lustrous, full-thoated, throbbing.
Throbbing is such a good word to describe some of their sounds.
Wonderful performance! There are so many good ones to choose from. One other that I have enjoyed is Mirella Freni's performance at the Met's 1991 Gala. Look it up on youtube. Callas and Scotto are also divine. Tebaldi's diction is superb!
