- In today’s vinyl boom market, lots of people think they can take those old records collecting dust and turn them into gold. Unfortunately, most records are not valuable. Even the ones seen online at astronomical prices have specific reasons that make them that way. Join us as we run through some of the factors that play into a record being worth those astronomical prices and when they’re not.

Every time I want to buy something on Ebay and the Seller has the option "offer" I'm going to attach this video to my offered price.
make sure you check previously sold prices on the particular pressing.
I got rid of my small vinyl collection recently and I simply put the albums on ebay with $1 starting bid - if it went for $1 then I figured that was what it was worth. I still made 2-3x what I originally paid for them but didn't feel bad about it. :) I just let the buyers decide what they wanted to pay.
The unfortunate situation when it comes to selling on eBay too is that eBay takes a bit of that profit from the sale you make. So I think that people automatically HAVE to have their prices higher on there to make what they are hoping to make out of the sale. To sell on Facebook Marketplace, or other free websites you can get away with selling cheaper since it's all your money, nobody takes a cut out of it like how eBay does when you sell something on that site.
I'm seeing this with the Steven Wilson remixes of the Jethro Tull albums (box sets).
The four still out of print are on sale on ebay for as much as 400 to 500 dollars. I'm just going to wait til they rerelease them.
Additional problems come from Record Stores also. I have the limited edition set of Pantera's first 3 albums that are color translucent. They are in very good to excellent condition. They do sell for between $249 to $350 each on ebay. I took them to a record store and they offered me $30 each. That's ridiculous because I know the record store will buy them for $30 each and turn around and sell them for $99 each. So, it's not just the sellers but also the buyers and the record store owners. Ultimately, something's value is only as high as what someone is willing to pay for it. Those records are not worth $300 but they are certainly worth more than $30. I ended up selling them for $100 each.
Instead of a rant, I agree with another poster that a video informing people on how to value a record would be great. Although this topic is vast, even a simple “let’s go to discogs” kind of thing could be helpful. eBay also has previous sales info to help a buyer understand what items have sold for. Also, the buy it now option is misleading for value. 😊
Remember.. There's one born every minute 😂
I've bought music at record fayres with my husband and you can haggle. I bought a cd promo of Iron Maiden Tailgunner for £10 and it's worth £100... It's supply and demand and what's popular sometimes ❤
I’ve been wanting Replay by The Outfield on cd for quite some time but it’s long been out of print and copies are selling for anywhere from over a hundred bucks to over three hundred bucks. I really like the album but out of principal cannot bring myself to spending that kind of money for a cd. The seller certainly has the right to ask whatever they want but as a consumer I have the right to walk away.
Never realized Howard Stern had a box set of bits from his old radio show. I’d like to get my hands on that.
I seen them for 20 dollars.
Same here. He's not cool anymore but that was some funny stuff back in the day.

The show stopped being good after Artie Lange left.
Forget CDs! When my Amway business takes off, I'll be able to afford record albums.😅
Haha 😂👊
The most I ever payed for a CD was 26 bucks for 'Chansons' by Josquin des Pres and 24 bucks for 'The Golden Age' by The Legendary Pink Dots, which is a lot of money considering that I am currently unemployed, but I knew what I was buying, so it was worth spending that much because the joy I am getting from listening to those albums is limitless...
I happen to love those Chansons by Josquin. My favorite recording is by the Hilliard Ensemble.
@@bobsala7780 Finally, someone with an exquisite taste
also people look at asking prices, they don't know how to search sold prices. many people "guess Price" they afix a random number and think they will get it because "the internet". I price my stuff on Ebay based on what it has actually sold for in the past.
I can’t stand when my EBay searches are clogged up with idiotic listings of items for a price that is so off base. Where do these people come up with the figure they’re asking?!!
Got any exmples?
Prices are never unfair as long as you can walk away without buying
I'm that asshole who buys beat to fuck records, food that's going out of date and looks after animals nobody else wants. Give good junk a home.
Right on bro. Rescue animals deserve to be loved and cared for. Rescue dogs for example are the best friends you can have! 🐶😀🐶
I’m totally disagree with you guys. I’ve been to record shows and I still able to get good deals sometimes. The same goes for record shops. If I want to sell an album and eBay pays more. Why would I sell it to a record store?
B, that Poison shirt wins the entire thing! Great discussion here. I've got a few records supposedly worth alot but I'm probably not selling😂
I bought my Into the Night by Santana promo single for 11 dollars, which is with shipping, and I also bought the Hero single from the Spiderman movie for 2.70 plus 4.13 shipping on eBay. I saw them going for over 30 dollars. When I put in Into the Night in the search, I was getting the Santana compilation that the song's on. I didn't want the compilation, and I didn't want to pay 15-30 dollars for singles, rare or not.
In search of "the real jerk-offs": my bet is on newspaper editors who give bombastic titles and leads to articles about the past 10 years' vinyl resurgence. (The articles themselves are usually more leveled out and they do mention that not every record is worth a house, and that there are nuance that do matter.) I believe this is the no. 1 reason why people get the wrong idea in general about records.
BTW I get some good deals at record fairs. Each seller has a different story. Someone would rather hold on to their high prices and not sell, others are flexible if you are also reasonable.
BTW2: Unfortunately death does drive up prices. Probably a temporary ripple, but I've seen this when Prince died, when Neil Peart died etc.
Too many people trying to sell records now are being completely greedy and gouging now. ESPECIALLY with anything Rock. They’re all convinced all copies of Beatles, Michael Jackson, Queen, Pink Floyd and the rest should net them a stack of $100’s. Dream on!!!
Can you do a video of how viny records have different versions and see if you got the rare one or not
I don't think Anthony appreciated your description of that record. He's got to sell that you know! 😁
Don't worry about trying to figure out who the asshole is. Worth is subjective, worth is not the same from person to person. Buy the concert ticket is it is worth $350 to you, don't if it's not. Do a series of videos on how to research prices if you are concerned that someone is being taken advantage of. It would be nice if the typical school taught something worthwhile such as how to manage your finances, maybe you could start a push for that. But don't inject yourself into someone else's business.
There's no shortage of viewers who believe that Brendon pays too much for many of the CDs he buys. They should stay out of Brendon's business and he should stay out of theirs.
The absurd flipping of records is the worst part of capitalism…..🎉
Do you ever have people bring in show tunes and feel they are worth something lol. Plus i never wanna pay more than 20 dollars for vinyl.
Nice poison shirt, I’m going to see Bret Michaels live tomorrow
Am I an asshole for buying multiple copies of my favorite records in order to drive up the price? 😂
Yes
😈
