It’s interesting to note that if the squirrel chooses the shelled nuts, they’ll almost always eat them right away. But, if they choose a nut in the shell, they’ll almost always take it with them to either store it in their drey for later or bury it. 😊❤️🐿
Yep. Most whole nuts will be buried, I’ve learned to slightly crack the walnuts so the Squirrels can eat them easier, they’ll eat maybe 3 or 4 nearby in a safe location, they might bury a few but another Squirrel will find them so they don’t always bury them, baby squirrels can’t really open a whole walnut so if the nuts are slightly cracked they can open them pretty easy. Happy babies! Figured all this out with about 50 Squirrels and 3,000 lbs of walnuts! Hungry new moms might eat 6 or 7+ walnuts before heading back to the babes.
They’re such fascinating little critters, my dogs found a 3 week old baby a few years ago, we live in a Redwood forest with trees just a few feet from the house, she decided she wanted to be a wild Squirrel 🐿 at about 4 months, heartbreaking but perfect, she’d come back every day for snacks and cuddles, then the dogs found another baby about 6 weeks old, in a few months he saw all those girls and wanted out! It’s been so much fun watching them all.
Yup, same for me. Roasted peanuts in the shell they will eat some then bury others but if shelled then they eat all of them. One I named Blonde will knock on my glass door when she is ready for her breakfast 🙂
It's nice to see Squirrel just come to take their food nicely somehow, in here we mostly sees squirrel enjoying themselves tripped on the village (transformer) breaker whenever they can lol
I only feed mine shelled peanuts, they tend to inspect them. If they are open or cracked, they eat them. If they are solid they bury them. Yes, there are a lot of shells left behind, but during the summer my lawn mower takes care of it. I live in the North East so at the end of winter my front yard is full of peanut shells. But that is fixed with my first lawn cut. It is worth the mess to help them survive in the winter cold and snow.
I have feeding squirrels for years and have had thousands of interactions with them, this is the first time I’ve seen a squirrel take two nuts at the same time.
They will take it in dig and burry them for later. I have a lot of holes in my garden bed with acorn nuts from squirrels. They will remember that spot when they come back ( most of them do )
My window sill is covered in shelled peanuts, my neighbors aren't overly happy 😄 but I have a squirrel bunch of about 8 that come regularely and a set of blue jays as well. Such a blessing in my life, I vibe with this 😁🐿
So funny. After Bee discovered there is choice A and choice B, I see her little head bobbing left and then right thinking about what to choose. Little squirrel brain in action. It looks like they found out shelled nuts could be burried which is an extra advantage.
I love Hodary going in for 2 at once & refusing to accept his mouth isn’t big enough 😂 Ours don’t really understand nuts in shells unless you crack them open a bit so they can see/smell what’s inside, so we usually give them pre-shelled ones, but I’ve seen plenty try for 2 or even 3 of those when they’re feeling greedy! 3 usually produces a loop, when the 1st one pops out the side of their mouths & they go to get it again, thinking “Oh! A 4th!!!” & each time the process repeats… They must be so confused when they go to try & bury them & they discover the 12 nuts they thought they picked up are only 2 after all!
I've often wished I could be completely imperceptible around wild animals, so I could see them going about their lives up close and in person. While this obviously isn't in person, the amount of trust these squirrels place in you almost makes me feel like my wish has come true.
I used to live in a duplex, fed the squirrels on a regular. One day my neighbor showed me a momma squirrel had nested in her attic. The tiny baby poked his head out to look at us. I said ADORABLE, she said Adorable hell, they have torn up everything in my attic ! The animal control that she called wouldn’t touch them because she had already given birth. 😊
I have found that during the spring and summer, they prefer to eat the shelled nuts first, then eat the unshelled ones, but in the autumn and winter, they will take away to bury the unshelled nuts, then eat the shelled ones. The winter stash is more important than the rumbley belly ❤
It's amazing how you can identify them all including their children. Squirrels visit me in my yard but not daily, maybe that's why I can't tell them apart.
Thank you for your lovely videos. We don't have squirrels here in New Zealand but I appreciate the kindness shown to these cute animals. I have hedgehogs in my garden who I feed regularly and they give me pleasure, as the squirrels undoubtedly do for you. ❤
I started out, with 🥜 in the shell, and they loved them. Though the trees my guys live in, are just inside my neighbors fence from my window.. Many would take the peanut 🥜's and eat and or bury in his yard.. The mess and the holes, became a problem.. So now it's mostly almonds, peanuts and cashews without shells I save the whole 🥜's in shells, for the little guys that will eat from my hand, or eat on my own roof.. 😁 I do not mind the mess !!! Take care...
My friend laughed at me for going on a walk with a bag of peanuts. We found three babies running circles on the tree. After making friends she understood 😂
Thanks for another lovely video……We feed ours with nuts both in and out of the shells, we find if we give them nuts IN a shell, they take it away and bury it, we have a huge field in front of our deck so we can see them doing it, but if we give them nuts already shelled, they tend to stay and eat it there and then. This doesn’t happen 100% of the time but I’d say at least 95% of it. ….I’m nearly there with feeding them from my hand, they get about 3 inches away, I’m slowly bringing the nuts closer to me. We’ve never bought so many nuts in our lives! I can only imagine how much you go through, you feed 30+, we only feed 8!…..hope you’re well and thanks again …..love Jan xx❤xx
I have 3 or 4 of my gang o squirrels who always take 2, when I am outside sitting with them I always put 2 in my palm for them and they stand on my leg and carefully arrange them in their mouths. They are so funny! When I am not out there they will grab 2 as well. They others are satisfied with 1. Love your videos, they are so cute and relaxing. Thanks for sharing!!! 💖
I put walnuts out in the tree, but also on my front enclosed porch where they can slip under the door if they need to! Mine always go for the in shell walnuts first! See you have me motivated over here in Michigan!! Thank u!
I would say that both types are useful to them because the ones with the shell can be stored better during the winter months and the ones without the shell can be eaten quicker. Both serve a purpose.
I can't believe that it has taken me so long to know that this channel exists. Instant sub! I love the sweetness of the munching and the sudden chaos of the squirrel scramble, nuts going every which way! 😃 I love how Hodary has the one nut in his mouth but grabs the second and is trying to nibble on it when it is impossible with one nut already in his mouth. 😂 Such silliness!
My squirrels LOVE black oil sunflower seeds. I buy them for the birds and the squirrels dine every day. They also love the cracked corn I put out. We had a squirrel take a slice of pizza up a tree that I put outside.
Mine look like they’ve been through war right when winter ended. And when it ended the temperature went up to the 80s, so they all have patches of fur long and short! They’re so cute, they look like little vagabonds!😅
In the winter of 2007-2008 I fed raw peanuts in the shell to the squirrels. It is now 2023, and I am still finding peanut shells the squirrels had burried and are still digging up. They do an awesome job of storing. None of the shells look dirty or moldy after 16 years.
I really enjoy your videos! I've been feeding squirrels from my deck railing since January. I started only providing nuts in shell, but now put out a smorgasbord of nuts in shell and nuts without shell. For me, the female squirrels tend to focus on the nuts in shell first then will eat the nuts without shell. The males that know I'm putting out food every day generally go for the nuts without shell first. There's one female squirrel like Hodary who always tries to take two nuts with shell. Hilarious Hodary! 😄 Two almonds at once would have been possible but a hazelnut and an almond? Always entertaining. 🐿 Interesting study. I was wondering about the subject myself. Most of my squirrels prefer almond and pecan over peanuts. I give them shelled almonds. Many squirrels, but not all, peel the skin off of the shelled almonds. I wonder if their preference is the result of having experienced tummy ache after eating them like some humans do. It might be interesting to find out if their preference is related with their age. Or it could just be that the skin tastes bitter to them. On a different subject, two out of the three antler sticks I had served disappeared. Apparently they finally found out what to do with them. By the way, this channel seems to be growing rapidly in terms of the number of views and comments🔥Clearly the result of the content quality. 👍
I would imagine that they would take the shelled nuts and eat them right away. Then take the unshelled nuts back home and store them away for a rainy day!
ROFL! Literally laughter out loud when he almost knocked off the nuts and then he panicked and reached out to stop them from rolling away. That was hilarious!!😂. Enjoyed the info about why shelled nuts are important for their growing teeth…interesting tid bit. You’re concerned enough to do some squirrel research for your furry friends. ❤. Thanks for sharing! Good for the rest of us to know for our own tree squirrels.
These videos are so lovely to watch..its good that younger generations are coming to feed from youre windowsill..i feed squirrels but the cats scare them off😢
Lmao that one cute little greedy guy trying to stuff two of the big ones in his mouth was funny. Bee making a mess was funny as well lol We have snow white squirrels here. That are adorable.
i'd say they all liked the shelled too except that last one, because 2 ate then took one for the road, while the others just took the shelled. the smart ones would have collected all the nuts then came back to eat the nuts that don't store as long(unshelled)
i have a red european squirrel in my garden and it likes both. it eats the shellless directly and takes the one with a shell with it. i finde them everywhere in my garden
We've started offering nuts to our squirrels in the hope they would raid the bird feeders less. No such luck 😂. They think they're at an all you can eat buffet. 🐿🥜 Your videos are adorable 😊
When I toss some peanuts in the shell to the neighborhood squirrels, they open some and eat them on the spot and other times they bury them in various places in the lawn.
Thank you so much for doing that. I live with my western and we love the squirrels..she doesn't chase them like others dog.we feed them ,in my condo they forbid ,so we do when no one is around, lots babies here.Bela(westie)send our love❤❤

My best friend's family used to throw olive pits into their courtyard for the local squirrels. There seemed to be a lot of conflict between the squirrels over the olive pits.
l crack the walnuts but leave them in the shell. ln the winter their favorite is roasted unsalted peanuts in the shell and the occasional cheese and peanut butter cracker. They love it. Never give them strawberries past ripe. ;)
So sweet that you look out for the squirrels the way you do. We feed ours shelled walnuts. think I read online that Brazil nuts are not good for squirrels.
Our squirrels often pack up 2 unsalted shelled peanuts from the yard. They usually bury one. I read how they assess each nut in a shell in a few seconds to see if it can be buried and stored or they eat it right away. I feel bad when they grab their peanut and run to our street yard waste pile thinking they found a good stash pile then a day later the whole thing is scooped up by the city and off it goes☹️
Love your squirrels & the way you take care of them. I think some like nuts without shells to eat at your window & then nuts in shell to go...lol great videos!💖😻👍🌰🥜🐿
I feed my garden squirrels nuts during the winter months but can usually only find nuts in shells around christmas!!! Usually buy quite a few bags and eke them out til spring 😀
I feel bad for Hodary. 😂😂 Too bad he's not a hamster, because then he could have easily put those two nuts in cheek pouches and still have room for more!
Depends on the squirrel 🤔 we have a family of squirrels that live in our large pine tree 🌲 in the backyard. Mama squirrel ❤ walnuts & the rest of the family perfer shelled peanuts 🥜 I've tried almonds, pecans & berries & they had zero interest. I am going to try that nut butter though 🙂
I think it rather depends on whether or not they are hungry. They choose the nuts without shells to eat on a spot, and take the ones in a shell to store for later. Sounds reasonable to me.
There are 4 mango trees, 2 sapodilla trees, 2 guava trees, several banana trees in my yard. I don't have to feed any squirrels. They have enough meal. But sometimes there's a feral cat hunting frog, small snake, rodent, bird, lizard and squirrel. I can't do anything because that's natural balance.
I remember the blue jays would always eat the shelled nuts first, but the squirrels would prefer the nuts in the shell. It must have been due to the front teeth.
Bea is a very busy lady !
Love squirrels. Bless their little hearts ❤
It’s interesting to note that if the squirrel chooses the shelled nuts, they’ll almost always eat them right away. But, if they choose a nut in the shell, they’ll almost always take it with them to either store it in their drey for later or bury it.

Yeah this is exactly what happens with the one i feed. He'll go immediately bury anything with a shell

This teacher learned a new word today - drey! 😁 Thank you! I am a huge fan of vocabulary. 🤠 👍🏼 🐿 🌰 🥜
This must be paradise for him!
I love how nearly every squirrel points at themselves as if to say “Oh for me? I shouldn’t but since you’re offering”
Thanks!
I appreciate you helping the precious squirrels. 🐿❤
Thank you very much, your kind gift is greatly appreciated. 😊❤️

I wonder if it’s because there’s a whole mob of them living there... be stealthy, be quick, grab & run before the alphas show up? 🤷♀️😊🕊
My greedy Matilda takes two unshelled peanuts from me all of the time. She has learned to expect 2 peanuts and not just one when I see her.
She has tried for 3, but has always failed when I tested her abilities.
Ours ALWAYS try to carry more than 1! 😊
They will take it in dig and burry them for later. I have a lot of holes in my garden bed with acorn nuts from squirrels. They will remember that spot when they come back ( most of them do )
They all seem very satisfied so interesting and fun seeing they're different personalities
Thanks!
Thank you very much for your kind gift. 😊❤️

I’m sure my neighbors aren’t happy with the piles of peanut shells that show up in their yards and gardens 😂
That’s awesome, I have a few squirrels I feed and one a female has even let me touch her on the nose a few times
So funny. After Bee discovered there is choice A and choice B, I see her little head bobbing left and then right thinking about what to choose. Little squirrel brain in action. It looks like they found out shelled nuts could be burried which is an extra advantage.
I don’t know what we would do without people like you in the world 🤩
My elderly mom and I just live watching and feeding them. They are so much fun and so sweet
I smiled widely at the same moment when Hodary tried to put another nut in his mouth :D
I've often wished I could be completely imperceptible around wild animals, so I could see them going about their lives up close and in person. While this obviously isn't in person, the amount of trust these squirrels place in you almost makes me feel like my wish has come true.
Hodray was funny trying to carry both shelled nuts in his mouth and paws. “Greed doesn’t pay”. 😂

Me too, I have been feeding squirrels for years at my balcon
Soda and I both love a good buffet. Hodary and Bee we leave at home for obvious reasons.😁
😂

My friend laughed at me for going on a walk with a bag of peanuts. We found three babies running circles on the tree. After making friends she understood 😂
03:35 This would be funny in slo-mo! 🥰🐿
I made a chunky nut butter 😄 and pleased to report it’s been a huge success!
Thanks to Squirrels at my window!

Been celebrating the king today and our beautiful squirrel was out and about love from England.☮️💞💐🌍🕊️🌹
I thought they would like both. If I was squirrel I would definitely be visiting your window. Thanks for sharing my friend ❤
I would say that both types are useful to them because the ones with the shell can be stored better during the winter months and the ones without the shell can be eaten quicker. Both serve a purpose.
I love how he curls his front paws and pulls them into his chest. Its a very cute and unique gesture
@terrilyndel
Oh, every squirrel does that! It's sooo cute! 😍
Maybe they are storing the shelled nuts for later. Love seeing them thank you 😊
it's amazing how Squirrels eat hard shelled nuts. they have very strong teeth to break those hard shells.
Their personalities certainly are different.
Very interesting experiment! That Hodary! 😂

LOL 🤣 It's a massive nut feast bonanza. Lucky Squirrel 🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿

I tell ya these lil critters are so fast moving.🐿️

Interesting study.
In the shell is better for their teeth but they run off, out of the shell they stick around.❤️
They like the shelled ones to take home to eat later ❤ but eat the unshelled now 😁🥜😋💖
"Wow, pre-shelled nuts! Humans got all the good stuff!"
Thank you for feeding my brethren
These videos are so lovely to watch..its good that younger generations are coming to feed from youre windowsill..i feed squirrels but the cats scare them off😢
Love these little rascals. All they do is look for food bc it’s not always this easy. Thanks for feeding them
Lmao that one cute little greedy guy trying to stuff two of the big ones in his mouth was funny.
They are so cute!!!
I love squirrels very cool animals
We've started offering nuts to our squirrels in the hope they would raid the bird feeders less. No such luck 😂. They think they're at an all you can eat buffet. 🐿🥜 Your videos are adorable 😊
Thank you for these videos, I’m new to your channel, and I absolutely love them, so adorable, and such a lovely thing you do 😊
Thank you and welcome to my channel 😊❤️
When I toss some peanuts in the shell to the neighborhood squirrels, they open some and eat them on the spot and other times they bury them in various places in the lawn.
Your videos are a gift to the collective mental health ! Thank you !
Thank you so much for doing that. I live with my western and we love the squirrels..she doesn't chase them like others dog.we feed them ,in my condo they forbid ,so we do when no one is around, lots babies here.Bela(westie)send our love❤❤
I have found that the squirrels that I feed, love unshelled pecans and walnuts. I usually give peanuts in a shell but I do throw out a few of their favorites to them if there are no birds around. The birds take them all! I enjoy the birds too but nuts are expensive and seed is just fine for them lol.
Always one squirrel that makes a mess 😊
I do love watching squirrels burying nuts, and how they act like nothing to see here,I didn't bury anything 😙
Mine take nuts in shells first. They eat some, hide lots and come back to eat the peanuts without shells. You always give them a lovely choice. I took a leaf out of your book and gave mine peanut butter which I spread on small pieces of bread so they can take it away and lick it off. Tfs
From my experience, they prefer salted in the shell peanuts (and some fresh water in the bird bath to wash them down).
Salt is not good for squirrels, try to give them unsalted dry roasted peanuts if you can.
i think they like the crunch
Another sweet time with squirrels, thank you.
This is fun to watch love all kinds of animals
Soda is adorable and Hodary had me laughing so much with trying to do her best to get 2 nuts lol
Just came across this channel today n absolutely love it 🤗 been watching loads of your vids, made my day! Thanks 😁
I'm very glad, thank you also for your lovely comment 😊❤️
The eternal battle: birds vs. squirrels and/ or chipmunks
Never give them strawberries past ripe. ;)
You don't have to open the walnuts for them, their teeth are super strong. There's no tool we have that can open nuts better or faster than squirrels.
Hodary trying to be a chipmunk. So cute!!
So sweet that you look out for the squirrels the way you do. We feed ours shelled walnuts. think I read online that Brazil nuts are not good for squirrels.
Brazil nuts are good for squirrels, just not in a big amount.
I think squirrels just understand the concept of spoiling and know that nuts in the shell last longer.
Actually, if they feel safe enough they will sit there and eat the nuts without shells for as long as possible. The shelled nuts are a “to go” nut.
It never occurred to me to give the squirrels nuts with the shell, I’ll give it a try
Any updates? 🤔
Our squirrels often pack up 2 unsalted shelled peanuts from the yard. They usually bury one. I read how they assess each nut in a shell in a few seconds to see if it can be buried and stored or they eat it right away. I feel bad when they grab their peanut and run to our street yard waste pile thinking they found a good stash pile then a day later the whole thing is scooped up by the city and off it goes☹️
watching this channel made me start taking a can of peanuts on my walk/runs to give to the squirrels. hah thanks for that
Awesome! 😊❤️
She got her fill of nuts quickly so decided to stock up on shelled supply.
It's the perfect mall visit, snack while you're there and then take some away for later 😃
They are so cute! What type of Squirrels 🐿 are they?
Eastern grey squirrels.
Love your squirrels & the way you take care of them. I think some like nuts without shells to eat at your window & then nuts in shell to go...lol great videos!💖😻👍🌰🥜🐿
Thank you 😊❤️
I feed my garden squirrels nuts during the winter months but can usually only find nuts in shells around christmas!!! Usually buy quite a few bags and eke them out til spring 😀
That's very nice, but you can also buy nuts in shell from Amazon, you can find the link for it in the description.
My squirrels prefer nuts in the shells. They are better for storing for lean months. The shelled nuts are for eating now.
It’s always good to have some in the convenient storage containers.
And I need a mallet for walnuts! 😂
I think it depends on if they're eating it right away or going to store it.
I remember the blue jays would always eat the shelled nuts first, but the squirrels would prefer the nuts in the shell. It must have been due to the front teeth.
