Luka Doncic has been the best player in the 2024 playoffs, there’s no exposing…
*Well damn.*
Luka Doncic got blown by 13 times in Game 2. That is the most ever in a finals game in the past decade since that was tracked. More than other supposed defensive liabilities like Curry, Chris Paul. *But his defense isn’t the worst part,* there’s another even more ugly side of Luka, something we’ll get into more detail.
But he had to do everything in Game 2. 30 point triple double and took accountability.
If Kyrie shows up, Game 3 will be different. And Kyrie did. Dropping over 30 points. *Ok, Luka now should have more energy to defend**…*what is this…
No don’t complain about the foul, get up.
Luka was racking up silly fouls throughout all of Game 3. Even one on Pritchard. But on his 5th foul, he complains after grabbing Brown’s jersey. Then, tries to take a charge less than 30 seconds later and just fails. Bam he’s fouled out, unable to help the team during the clutch moments of a must-win game.
*I think we often forget that defense is 50% of the game.* Luka as a whole is not the reason the Mavericks are losing. He’s the main reason they are there. But if you’re getting called the best player in the world, *the standards are much higher.* Defense is one issue, but psychologically is another.
*There is what I like to call setting an example.*
But defense isn’t necessarily his biggest issue right now, *because even with this, I think the Mavericks could have put up a better fight as a team.* And what holds them back is two key things, both on Luka.
What is up dudes, dudettes, ballers, players. It’s ya boi MJ.
We’ve all been mesmerized by Luka’s abilities to perform in the clutch. We saw it during these playoffs. Several media members were banking on that when they picked the Mavericks over the Celtics. Heck some TH-cam creators made that point.
But you can’t have the ball for the last shot if you aren’t in the game.
What we also saw during these playoffs is a constant stream of complaining. To the point that the Dallas Mavericks had to talk to him. And this isn’t a one off.
The Mavericks don’t run much fastbreak offense, heavily off the assumption that their best bet is running the offense through Luka. And Luka’s pace is a bit slower. As a result, the Celtics get to also set up their defense who have 4 guys who can switch and guard the perimeter extremely well. This is the one counter Luka either doesn’t have or chooses not to use it. That slight variation in offense gets some easier buckets. Pushing the ball might get a mismatch for someone which will help the Mavericks team get in rhythm.
Luka is so good in a half court setting, usually a weak point of several players, but because he’s so good, they keep going back to it.

Mavs probably overachieved as a team reaching the finals and beating OKC and Wolves. Celtics were always the favourites for the title, regardless who are they facing. Their roster is just the best there currently is.
This isn't a Luka issue, and not saying this as a Luka fanboy. There are 28 other teams that didn't make the finals. 5 of them (i think, and please correct me if i'm wrong) had a MVP winning player on their roster.
Nobody is saying Luka is a perfect or complete player, not even the ones who were advocating for his MVP.
Reducing the finals narrative into Luka diss video just seems rather clickbatish.

One simple fix is Kyrie initiating the offense more often. It was crystal clear to me that with him doing so, the pace was pushed and other teammates got more touches. Luka's ball dominance is a huge problem, especially at the pace that he runs the offence. In Game 4, they pushed the pace more and that had the Celtics in trouble. In Game 5, they then reverted to playing at a slower pace and lost. Making people run hard on defence is a great defensive tactic since it stops them from being comfortable. For most of the series, the Celtics comfortably got into their defence and therefore could have the energy to play as they wished on offence.
I've seen this in other sport. League's most prolific player neutralized; their legacy left hanging in the balance due to circumstance...

I'm kind of sick of the basketball community. Whatever happens everybody jumps on the narrative and lashes out... Ant-Man wins a series, suddenly he's the next Jordan, then get his ass kicked and suddenly he sucks. Luka & Kyrie shines and suddenly they are favored against the BEST team. Then they lose (expectedly) and suddenly Luka is nothing more than a fat scorer and Kyrie is a choker... Luka is young. He'll be shaped into something greater, like Tatum who lost over and over again at the big stage. Event the best of the best screws up on his way. LeBron himself dropped the ball in 2011 yet he's still LeBron. Jokic is still a machine, Ant is still a warrior, Luka is still "Magic", Kyrie is still an artist... At the end, there's only one trophy and Celtics are on another level. Kudos. Basketball is amazing, people. Just sit back, watch and let yourself be amazed.

Luka was the best player in the series and the refs were letting Jaylen hold his jersey and hand check him all the time. He has 5 injuries and nobody besides Kyrie averaged over 10 ppg while he fed them open shots. His team failed him. Tatum shot 38% with 22ppg. Luka had 29 on 48% and started forcing shots up game 3 because nobody could make anything besides him.

No one said Luka is trash. Matter of fact if he was trash, there wouldn't be so much headlines about expectations and critiques about his flaws. People deliver their messages differently but all there are saying is they know how good Luka is so he needs to just play basketball and minimize the complaining as much as possible because he is hurting the team in that aspect as their leader. Not taking away what he did and how far he got in this playoffs on one good leg (which is nothing but ridiculously impressive). But, with the exception of the experience, how disappointing would it be to make such a huge sacrifice on your body and not win because you couldn't keep you cool and complained in crucial and not so crucial situations. At the end of the day, this is high level basketball and ideally should be physical at times resulting in fouls. But refs would be refs and not see and/or call everything as it is.
It is similar similar to Draymond's situation early in the season but obviously miles more lowkey. Draymond was hurting his team with the techs and ejections to the points people were saying Warriors should get rid of him (1. persons who were saying that clearly don't know his importance to GSW and 2. Don't worry I'm not saying Luka would end up in such predicament). But he was called out for it as he is the *locker room* leader of the GSW. We all saw how that turned out for them as a result of his. Obviously Dray not putting up points like Luka cuz that's not his role, however, these two situations shows how crucial leaders are to their group/team/troop whether it's on and off the court or whatever the task at hand is.

Well IF you add the defence to the the lack of stamina and atheticism to be able to withstand the gruelling NBA schedule and style of play without being gassed all the time, also his constant complaining, which does actually lead to him leaving his team to defend 4-on-5 for multiple possessions, it looks a bit worrying...
The Pros are amazing, he is insanely talented, but that is all potential - you need to be able to produce that on a regular basis, not just one-offs here and there. I just believe the Cons are pretty costly and specific ones, when you stop and think about it.

This protects the players from injury.
This air space rule should be called both ways. Luka pump fake at the three, then leans into the defender to create contact while they're in the air.
On offense you just entered the defenders air space.

@@deni8814 due to the rule changes in the past 7 years, the argument can be made that defense is tougher due to the 2020 "freedom of movement" rule making it next to impossible to lock down players on offense. It was one thing to take hand check away but now that u get a whistle for TOUCHING a player, there's less than marginal room for error. Only saving grace in the playoffs is that the whistles get swallowed just for a smidgen of time real defense is actually allowed and it tells off in who relies on the whistle and who doesn't.
