Out of these 3 movies, it does make sense that Elemental would end up being the success story, due to great word of mouth, and how much people fell in love with Wade & Ember's relationship.
Wade is made of water, and he cries out water. Wouldn't that make him cry out the equivalent to his whole body? I mean humans are about 90% water but we still have skin and blood
I used to believe that marketing was the problem too but after seeing this, it reminded me that if there’s anything John K’s refusal to compromise on his shows taught me, it’s that TV shows and Movies really are just a business. A business where people should be treated better in but still. You did good on this one.
So basically a decent amount of the people saying the marketing is bad are either bad at noticing the marketing or just don't completely get how marketing completely works. Reminds me of me encountering people saying "there are no memorable cartoons these days" while not keeping track of any new cartoons at all.
Damn, you laid down some fair points, especially the cacophony of reasons why the theatrical film experience isn't as coveted as it once was. I go pretty frequently, but mostly on $5 Tuesdays because that's a manageable amount of money to keep spending. But lots of people are content to skip the theater altogether. When a movie takes so long to make and you have to figure out what people are going to be craving at the time it comes out instead of what you know to be true in the present, that does require some gambling that may not pay off. That said: the non-reality that you described about the distributors seeing the finished movie? I think that should be a thing. At the very least, a version that's pretty much complete even though a lot of the animation isn't finalized yet. Because no matter what the marketing strategy is, a trailer that gives away most of the plot is not ideal. Questionnaire Answer: As a major side character in The Dragon Prince... there's some dangerous stuff in that world. I'd say my level of fucked is 6/10, depending on which characters I interact with the most.
Thank you for calling this out. My personal theory is that people want to blame the advertising because they don't want to admit the studios they like had a less-than-stellar film.
I have no proof of this but im pretty sure most of the time people are complaining that they arnt seeing marketing for something its because they paid to get rid of the ads like on youtube or streaming sevices that would have shown trailers or other ads for it
Although difficult to weigh your opinion since you admitted to not investing a lot of time in the research. You make fair points about how complex it is to get people to care about what you create. In a perfect world the desire for profit would not be necessary if you did not have to support yourself, team, and desires but that's just fantasy. So it does make a lot of sense that the successful stories come because of those who aggregately share about what they experienced, forming a community around the project I guess. Answer to the Questionnaire: Living in the 80s forever with a Howard the duck would be a fever dream and don't know how I would cope. Then again Lea Thompson is there. 😍
9:34 I know what you mean, there needs to be a marketing department that notices the community is still there ready to consume products. But it wasn't well explained. The Avatar community was still there, marketing or not, and Netflix by itself is meaningless in that process. Also, can and will make or kill a movie. A good marketing team can’t really save a bad movie… Unless that movie is a disney remake, those tend to do good for nostalgia alone no matter how bad they are. And bad marketing can kill a movie before it starts.
I remember seeing this movie promoted on TH-cam everywhere and saw a lot of comments saying wade has the striking resemblance to warner brothers own white blood cell character osmosis Jones
10:59 I came to your channel through your One Piece content and probably will more likely comeback only for your One Piece content. But the good will you created through that “sure-fire success” content led me to watch this “original” content. Keep making vids and finding the One Piece. Though I would totally join your Patreon if it meant you talking about the Drum Island Arc in depth because it was my favorite
I find my self on your side quite often Things I have happen to me a lot 1. An animated film that got no Advertising is often some thing I have seen a LOT of adds for 2. Actual good movies never get talked about by TH-camrs like at all 3. People don't know the Original Story they are watching is actually a remake or a heavily changed adaptation 4. People ask for a more accurate adaptation but actually just want a Disney movie 5. People ask for sequels for movies then complain no original ideas ever get done then complain there are too many remakes 6. People watch an original movie and then complain that no one ever makes sequels to there favorite franchise 7. people see two films have the same general things in it and call it a rip off 8. People ask for new ideas with out realizing the 1920s already did that idea 9 people ask for dark movies then complain the movie was too dark then ask for lighter tone movies and complain it was too campy. 10. people get mad if you cast immoral actors 11. people get mad if you recast a major character 12. people get mad if a series reboots rather then recast 13 People get mad if the wrong race plays a character 14 people insist that any race can play a roll as long as there good 15 people get mad if a job is locked to only one race and some one looses a job based on color etc 16 people get mad if an actor is not the same race ect as there character 17 people praise an actor for playing some thing they are not 18 get mad at CGI 19 get mad if we see a super fake looking practical effect 20 demand a movie come out sooner 21 hate crunch time 22 want cheepier products 23 want actors and writers to get paid fair 24 Praise a movie for its use of new technology 25 complain when that new technology is used again 26 Movies don't make merch 27 Lawsuits over bootleg merch 28 Movie unviable any place 29 hate over bootlegging 30. people assume if a movie failed it was the fault of greedy racist executives and racist audiences movies bomb because YOU didn't see them and YOU didn't see them because YOU knew they existed and YOU still didn't go.
I think what people aren't taking into account is that these movies don't inherently turn people onto them just from the trailers. Strange Worlds was too out there and... well... strange to catch on with general audiences, Elemental looked like the standard copy+paste Pixar formula we've seen dozens of times, and Ruby Gillman has a very generic and uninspired animation and character design style - I'm just being honest. Yes, once you sit down and watch these movies they are all decent watches, but you wouldn't know that just from what was presented.
Being decent is part of the problem, whether you have good marketing and achieve a huge audience or good marketing and a small audience, being ok is not the aspiration of any creator. Anyone who does a creative job where they put passion into it has the goal of it being a hypothetical 10/10, that is what everyone aspires to, whether they have the merits or never have them, things are created with that premise in mind. Marketing works around them and can make the numbers grow, fall or be the same. When you watch those movies, they are a 6 or 7, which is not a big deal and that does not help you boost post-launch marketing because people expected a 9 or 10 from companies like Disney or Dreamworks. Even if your product is shit, you can get everyone to buy it, it won't last over time, but everyone bought it and therefore it's a success. It happens, but it's not like that magic always happens, so there is no omnipotent marketing, and the same applies if your movie is ok or a 10, nothing guarantees you will be a success. Having marketing is good no matter what your product is, it is unquestionable. Unless you are fucking Miyasaki, say: "I'm not going to advertise, people come to see me, fucking Miyasaki", and your movie becomes a global success.
ammm...so before i went to canada i saw no ad for strange world in my country (same day) when I was in Canada every bus had the strange world logo on it...some also had that mermaid kid still.... so there was some ad
I like this channel, goofy. (edit) The last time I watched a show was when I was rewatching Arifureta and One Piece, so like, I'm living the dream if I got to be a major supporting character in either.
Cone of Arc", "Alternate History Hub", "Emperor Tiger Star" and "Explained with Bad Doodles" all release a Video within the same hour ? .... is this the end of the world? ....let me check my pulse
Average film goers have converted to streamers now. Plus animation has been aimed towards kids in the West, which Parents prefer to stream because it way cheaper.
12:20 WAIT WAIT NOOOO IVE BEEEN GRINDING ONE PIECE SO I CAN BE AS CAUGHT UP AS POSSIBLE FOR GEAR 5 NOW IM A MAJOR SUPPORTING CHARACTER IN ONE PIEEECCEE!!! WHERE THE RICH ARE EITHER ROBBED OR EVIL DAMN IT!!! 9/10
12:08 the last movie I've seen was the miraculous movie so I have to be a supporting character in that universe while living in luxury not bad at least it isn't the original series
Hey since your video reminded me of the owl house 3 finales sucks Amphibia and the first 2 of owl house were awesome and all your other are dope the owl house last video what happened re do it cause your work is Funny as hell just an opinion don’t take it personal
Well... Ruby Gillman wasn't bad. It failed because Universal's Stupid Butt didn't promote the damn movie because they needed to promote other movies like the FNAF Movie and Strays.
I'm glad Owl House was kicked to the curb. That show is terrible. Everyone seems to like that garbage except for me. I am a huge fan of the shows that came after it though.
it was definitely pretty mid, it felt severely rushed and like none of the characters were very consistent (especially Amity) and the tone/story was all over the place. I think the artists who worked on it are talented but it just didn't work within its budget and time constraints

So true! I wasn’t planning on watching it until I heard so many amazing things about it. I was bored so I went and had a blast!
Wade is made of water, and he cries out water. Wouldn't that make him cry out the equivalent to his whole body? I mean humans are about 90% water but we still have skin and blood

"there is no marketing for this movie" aka: "i never went outside to see the marketing and also don't inhabit the websites where movies are marketed"
This is better than the actual marketing
That "GOODBYE, DON GLEES!" reference was a welcomed surprise. I loved that movie. Probably one of my favorites this year.
Thank you for calling this out. My personal theory is that people want to blame the advertising because they don't want to admit the studios they like had a less-than-stellar film.

Original animated films are still my niche. Great video
I like the fact you did research and tried not to talk out of your butt.
