This is unexpected. I hope you well man. You are someone I see as an honest person who worked hard, was always upfront with people, and stood for something. Really good questions being raised. Thank you for the effort you have put into FaB.
We need someone to step into The Tall Timmy role to be the beacon of community. Any game without fun and friendship can turn into a burning grind. People should focus on inviting new players, teaching good manners, experiencing and enjoying life. It's a lifestyle choice and the value of meeting people will always be greater than games.
Hi! I'm Carlo from the Philippines and we organized the 70+ man Skirmish and the 60+ man Armory. The only thing I think we're doing differently is non-stop recruitment and community building. We have regular and intentional Learn to Play FAB days almost weekly. Just this weekend we onboarded 30 new players. Player churn is a reality of life and the only way to grow a community over time is to never stop recruitment of new blood.
The side event that broke the record was the Sagrada Familia BL Sealed Event, last event of the weekend, not a CC event* Glad to hear your store is going strong, but totally hear ya on the Dori viability bit. If somehow Heavy Hitters does her a solid, you better come back soon ;)
fab stuff aside, hope the shoulder recovery goes well! been doing PT rehab for some weightlifting injuries this year myself, a very slow gradual process (its taught me to be more patient with results though)
Games are for enjoyment and fun for the most part and taking a break if you’re not feeling it or are experiencing burn out is the most healthy thing to do. A lot of scenes have only a few people doing all the heavy lifting and that can be exhausting.
My local scene has been exploding in growth, its in a small city in Oklahoma. I believe our success is playing alot of blitz lowers the barrier of entry for new players and we all try to keep it laid back, an easy and friendly atmosphere.
It was always a pleasure to see you at events, my friend. Hope to see you them in the future. I feel you 100 on the shoulder pain, football injury playing keeper myself. I digress, I look forward to your return mi amigo.
Hi Fluke, at our locals it’s also stagnated but we have a good 8-12 players that come. Next week I’ve advertised for some giveaways(from my personal collection) as a once off at my locals and I’ll see how many turn up. If the event is successful I’ll do it again just to rejuvenate the locals.
I also just want to mention that I was feeling very similarly about my main in FaB. I know Dash has had much more viability than Dori, but felt like mechanologist as a whole had been getting shafted for a while (rare support, still only 1 adult hero...) and it undeniably started causing some bitterness. I'm really into deck building and theory crafting but mechonologist was simply not providing that variety I needed. Obviously, that all changed when Bright Lights dropped - an entire set that felt like it was designed specifically to cater to my mechonologist wishlist. That set completely revitalized my interest in the game, and I hope that Heavy Hitters can provide something similar to you. At the very least, consider giving Kassai a try 😉
Reads like it's a big deal, actually it's just someone handling hobby and real life fluctuations like a reasonable human being instead of venting online every chance they get. The competitive TCG experience for some people indicates that they're bound to be overtly entrenched, and on top comes the fact that people and sometimes especially gamers do not handle disappointments well no matter where it is in life. There's some nuggets in here that don't concern FAB the least. I've also got a favorite hero who's been getting shafted for a while. And I loved to play one of the decks that was strong but people loved being unreasonably salty about. No matter which side you're on there's issues that dampen enjoyment, and to a big degree it's how you handle yourself that determined where you go, not what you're venting about and setting ultimatums for a non person entity about what you don't like
I could tell you were stepping back a bit =) The less stress twitter updates are still good to read. For my local it goes up and down, particularly after a bigger event or after the XP grind period. I still enjoy playing but generally only play once every fortnight. I am with you on the buying parts of collections though. It is satisfying picking up some nice stuff, particularly when you can see the value.
I totally get your feelings, especially with how dori feels to play with tome dromai in the format. And when the vibes at local armories are what's supposed to pull you through it and they just don't - that's just the cherry on top. I hope you'll find something next year to reignite the spark. Personally, I've been having fun playing new decks after losing some interest in dromai (it just isn't the same with tome) and that has been a blast. All the best
No shame in that, I take breaks from TCGs all the time. Taking a break isn't synonymous with quitting - I've played TCGs long enough to know that a break is just a break, and I'll probably be back in the future. And even then, I'm usually keeping up with it, buying/selling cards or even building decks throughout the break period. It's a natural phase.
My main LL'd a little while ago and I gotta tell ya, it's not super. I still want to play the game but suddenly I sort of can't without taking a giant step back. I have to try out a few different heroes and get wrecked a bunch before I find a new hero I enjoy and can play well. I think it's something that needs some long term planning to soften the blow. I've overall been really impressed with the lack of toxicity among the FaB community compared to other card games. If you've noticed it over on your end of the world that makes me a little sad. Anyway, enjoy some time away, that's healthy.
Hope you come back after heavy hitters! I think Dori is positioned pretty well in the meta but hope she gets even more love with the next set. But not too much that she LLs haha.
I think its very healthy to take breaks when you arent enjoying the games you play. Went through something similar post Prism LL and again after DtD. For me, the break was changing the deck I play, but if your break is playing the market, all the power to you! I dont think a single person can really revive a scene. It has to be a ... TEAM! ... effort from a core group of friends, and from there people will come. One person can try to build this group, but without one its unlikely.
Make sense, being involved in playing every week at the LGS isn't always possible, players will come and go, hopefully more new players can replace oldies taking a break or leaving
it would be cool to have a physical fluke and box store and create your own environment, pretty sure youd have no problem getting lots of people coming to play
Me personally I am tired of trying to go play a draft for the first time or go to an armory with a slightly untuned deck and the whole room is filled with people that have the meta solved in their heads and there is no room for fun

Ah really ? Still seemed people wanted to play cc / get a promo than play even a sealed calling . Says a lot

Fluke, I hope you stay around. You are unique, important and valuable. Thank you for all of the content. 🎉
Not going anywhere dw

Good point . Blitz is king for growth

I’ve already taken the brake don’t worry ;)

I feel you on the problems of having a main that isn't meta. it's certainly something LSS will have to find ways to deal with to retain players.
Always had promos given out regardless of event firing or not at least for my locals

We just can't have 3 dead months a year anymore where we are hoping for cards to show up between sets.
Keep going you can do it!

I have also taken a break. EVO was the first set I didn’t open
It’s actually a really fun set to open
Just started turning up to one of the places you alluded to
Welcome ?
