I’m a 50 yr old kiwi. My kids are a little old for bluey so I’d never seen it. But I heard about this through cricket channels. So I watched it. Cried like a baby.
What I found interesting about the episode is that unanimously makes people feel a bit teary. My wife was teary because he hits the ball to his sister. I was a little emotional when he walks off and it transitions to him being in the Aussie team. All the hard work paying off. Interestingly a lot of my friends wives say the same thing as my wife, and my mates all think the same as me. Very well crafted episode.
My 6 year son and 3 year old daughter are now playing cricket because of this episode. They were bought a cricket set by my cricket mad brother who doesn’t have kids, watched this episode and thought it was great. They now want their uncle to teach them how to play cricket. Just wonderful.

Its a great episode, and because its Bluey it gets so many details about cricket perfect, but like all Bluey episodes it isn't really about its subject. Tickle Crabs wasn't actually about Tickle Crabs, Fairytale was wasn't really about the 1980s, even though it gets all the details of those kid's games right. That's what is so amazing about Bluey, it does the work to get every detail right, while the subject is only ever a a background to its stories, that focus almost always on kids growing up and their relationships with their parents. The Cricket episode shows the game of cricket and how it fits in to Australian life perfectly, while it is actually telling a story about Rusty growing up, and the relationship he has with his Dad while he is away on military service. Its that emotional core of the story that story that makes it accessible to people who don't know anything about cricket. It is a wonderful advertisement for the game because after drawing people in with a simple, engaging story about Rusty growing up, it then gives the audience such a wonderful, loving representation of the game.

And in the Final, Rohit himself stated after the toss if he won, he would have batted first. A Champion Team will always beat a team full of Champions. I lived in Australia for 4 years for uni, so I'm a little familiar with what cricket is and a bit of the lore behind it even if I never watch a game. This seven minutes cartoon episode however, made we want to watch a game of the sport in its entirety and even try a game of backyard cricket (where I've only seen how it's like in various media). If they can do that to a 32-year old Indonesian that lives in a cricket-less (or... very, very minimum amount) country, I can only imagine what can it do to other little kids around the world. I like what you said about how a sport is represented matters as much as how it is played. Ted Lasso gave me thesame feeling with football
As an American... and not just that, a Texan... I understood a whole lot of words that you said. But almost none of the details. And I loved it. The deeper meaning was already clear (yeah, maybe I teared up a little at this episode?), but the details of the game are pretty awesome.
It's weird to say it like this, but 2/almost 2 decades ago I played a version of cricket for the first time in the midwest. My neighbors had Australian family and they made a "Midwestern Cricket set" PVC pipe as the wicket, a plastic bat flattened with a piece of wood or plastic mended to it, and a tennis ball at first as the ball. Played in our local park. I spent years playing this, kick the can, and tennis court baseball with this group of mostly older kids during my formidable years. I remember often and fondly and now feel old somehow as a 27 year old.
Loved the point about how even international batters have their game shaped by the environment they played in as kids. Gully cricket probably trained many Indian batters to play with a straight bat as that's where most of the scoring opportunities are when you're playing on narrow streets (i.e gullies) Edit: Also just remembered a story Rahul Dravid once told about playing on matting wickets in Bangalore, which made him really good at negotiating uneven bounce and movement, which probably was one of the reasons he averaged 68 in England.

So, even though my kids haven't tried to recreate cricket in the backyard, I have seen them imitate other episodes from the show so I agree there are likely kids all around the world who are trying to recreate the cricket episode in their own way bc that's what kids do.
Rusty is a tall redhead guy that went to school (Grey) with me in South Africa, same one Graham and Sean Pollock did. Rusty did very well for himself, pace bowler who could bowl anyone out! (And not that no one could him out like in Bluey)
That bouncer analogy was so good, it even got me thinking, there are as many solution to life's problems as there are ways to play a bouncer, rohit will pull, dravid will duck, tendulkar will cut, you just gotta pick what works for you
Don't know if anyone caught the spectacular result on Sunday in a test between Australia and the West Indies when a little known bowler by the name of Josephs who had been injured the day before came out and bowled 7 wickets in one session gifting the windies the win the first win in Australia since 1997 two ex Windies players turned commentators including Brian Lara where in tears at the result
This is so true, i have a 2.5 yr old boy who had never been told about cricket, pick up a toy that looked like it could be used as a bat, and hit a ball around the yard saying "cricket". I put it down to watching Bluey maybe only 2 or 3 times at that point. Now im an ex cricketer so it was going to happen at some stage, but Bluey beat me to it at an age i never thought it would happen

@@christinesavage4837 In fairness, we deserve to not forget. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. The phrase "it's just not cricket" stems from the fact that cricket has a reputation as being the most sportsmanlike of games; and every ball of every over of every match should reflect that. Although I will say, it was 43 years ago now. We're not going to forget, but I would like it not brought up so much. 🤣
As an American whose only other prior exposure to cricket is that Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy book (British cricket), I understood like 5% of this lol. Excellent video, and fascinating how much detail Ludo packed into this episode. Being neither Australian nor much into sports, I cannot fully understand or appreciate everything you talked about, but it is an interesting window into another world nonetheless.
My nieces and nephew’s know nothing about cricket. But the questions I received about this episode. Pretty funny. And tbh the creator has made our country a shitload of money out of his brilliant brain. Like Rowling and Tolkien. Very minimal resources for huge benefit. I bloody love the guy and never watch the show ❤❤❤❤. Ps Jarrod I love picking apart cartoon captains. Terrible skipper. Must supply the snags
I have a 9 year old daughter and she absolutely loves Bluey and won’t lie I sneak in an episode or two with her coz I like it too.. haven’t seen this episode yet though, will check out
Terrific content as usual! I sometimes watch Bluey with my kids. It is a light hearted show and people can relate to it. Have not watched this episode yet, but am going to do now. 😊
Not sure I'd call the episodes dealing with miscarriage, infertility, divorce, child abandonment, various psych conditions, difficulties of parenting, etc... 'light hearted' per se.. heh
Excellent analysis. I couldn’t help but think about the impact this might have on cricket worldwide too. Cricket, tbh - doesn’t feature in my top 10 list of sports I enjoy watching, but I have a new found appreciation for it, as a result of the Bluey cricket episode!
The Americans are great at getting the spirit of baseball and its connection with beauty and transcendence (The Natural, Field of Dreams etc). This is the first time the beauty and transcendence of Cricket has been accurately visualised in art. Blessings on the creators of Bluey for condensing all that is good and precious about cricket into 7 minutes.
We should have some kind of Ted Lasso for Cricket where each episode has story but also one key concept of cricket is explained during the episode for a first timer.
I'm not sure Bluey is really aimed at 4 year olds - I think its Joe Brumm reminiscing about raising his two girls, remembering his old dog (Bandit), with a healthy dose of imagination thrown in. Like so much good Kids TV it crosses the age gap. I probably love it more than my kids and regularly makes me laugh (and cry). Many of the locations, including the cricket pitch in this episode, are based on real locations in Brisbane.
One of the other reasons Bluey is great is that appeals to both kids AND adults. Often you'll hear some adults really enjoying it. Great well written scripts and good entertainment and lessons for kids on life.
This video is amazing and couldn’t be said better. Living in America, if people even know what cricket is to begin with, they would most likely think it’s some cheap baseball knockoff. I know that’s what I thought slightly for a while. But that’s because it’s not ever pushed out over here. With how international Bluey is (and also of course how this episode is amazing and very well-written) this will make cricket so much more popular around America and the world. I know it’s opened my eyes to cricket and made me interested in it, and it will 100% happen with many kids and adults too. Ludo Studios was so smart with this move.
They'd be wrong thinking it's a cheap knockoff of Baseball given it's older, globally relevant and Baseball is from Rounders. Cricket did well this year with the T20 World Cup being hosted jointly by the USA and Caribbean, especially after Team USA had a shock win against Pakistan. There is even now a pro series in the USA with some serious financial backing and they've enlisted people like Jomboy from Baseball media to show you people can play and like both. Cricket has something the USA will love, global competitions and a national team to support. The last scene where he goes out wearing the Test Team uniform is special. It means he isn't just a pro (which every kid dreams of) he's been selected from the hundreds of pros to be a part of the 11 player Australian team at the very highest level of international sport. And he's doing it at his hometown stadium.
@@goodshipkaraboudjan You'll actually be surprised at how often Cricket is looked at that way of being a baseball knockoff, even though it's actually older like you said which is hilarious that people feel that way about it. Also yeah, Cricket has huge potential in the states and this year's T20 World Cup really boosted it. I remember that day my Twitter feed was filled with people finding more about Cricket and the USA Cricket Team from that match specifically. And The MLC like you mentioned also has crazy potential as a league itself and to spread Cricket around the states too. Lastly with you mentioning the last scene, yeah, I still can't believe how good it is. It is my favorite scene throughout the entire show and makes me smile just thinking about it. The episode really shows the tale of perseverance and hard work in such a motivational, amazing, and incredible way, and of course how it also introduced many kids to Cricket like said in the video. It's just amazing. I 100% agree with everything you said.
I get it to but baseball doesn't have anything like the ending. I teared up watching the end when he walks out wearing the Australian Test Team uniform. He isn't just a pro, he's the best of the best selected from hundreds of Aussie pros playing around the world to be a part of the 11 players to take on the world for the country. Every kids dream in Australia. Pretty sure the stadium is modeled off the "Gabba" in Brisbane where he grew up to.
A weird aside, the background music running through the episode sounds like a variant of Oh Lord by Pele which were a moderately successful 90's English band, with the emphasis on moderate.
What the US version of this episode doesn’t get is that Rusty’s dad is deployed in an unnamed Middle East or similar location as a member of the Australian Army. Other episodes where Rusty is picked up from school by his dad show his dad to wear a rifle green beret, denoting that he is a member of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, an infantry Battalion stationed in Brisbane. The nickname of 6RAR is Bluedog as their mascot is an Australian Blue Cattle Dog or Blue Heeler. What makes this poignant is that Rusty gets these letters while his dad is in a war zone. Absent, but still present. As a veteran with kids, this resonates hard. More trivia, Anthony the blue Wiggle was also in the Australian Army.

As I am watching this, my son runs through the house and throws random objects emulating the cricket throw... asking me to buy a willow. We live in Vienna - Austria (no kangaroos)
I never knew there was so much to bluey. I never bothered to watch it with my kids. Just that my 16 months daughter dances to the intro music. Guess need to give it a try. 😅
Definitely. It's easily the top tier choice for a kids show you can watch along your kids, since they designed it around that. There are so many episodes that focus on the parents and so many topics are brought up from this show that make you realize that it's not a show aimed to be for just kids like all the other modern day made crap parents have to chore through. Also random other side tip. Don't let kids watch Cocomelon. It's terrible for them lol.
As an outsider, the response to this episode seems to have the same impact for cricket in Australia, as the manga and anime "Hikaru no Go" had for Go (sort of like a version of chess) in japan.
@RatzaChewy It is unclear, but it seems more likely that the gold team at the end are the Kangaroos, playing the Kiwis in league. The whole episode is on league and Mackenzie's dad says "go the Kiwis" rather than "go the All Blacks"
@@dmwebby Look again at the pitch markings, commentator is Gordon Bray too. All Blacks and Wallabies are trademarks, so either it was a gaff or they couldn't use them on the cheap.
What would’ve have made this episode better was having moms like chilli and co, having a crack at Rusty. I think inclusion in cricket has improved a lot, but this episode could’ve taken it further to showcase it to the non-cricketing world! Minor gripe on an otherwise a lovely episode and series.
It's an interesting thought, cricket depictions in the media generally are scant. Compare that to say baseball/gridiron in the states. Just about every sitcom has a baseball/softball episode. How many films have been made about baseball or gridiron teams/players overcoming the odds etc. I don't even play baseball but I love Sandlot or League of their Own or Field of Dreams. Cricket needs some "ripping yarns" treatment. Get Joe public aware of how good/dramatic the game can be. Not just standing in a field for 5 days and still ending in a draw.
Now a whole generation of kids are gonna be playing test cricket because of talking dogs. And I’m all for it and the growth of our game.

That bouncer analogy was so good, it even got me thinking, there are as many solution to life's problems as there are ways to play a bouncer, rohit will pull, dravid will duck, tendulkar will cut, you just gotta pick what works for you
Different strokes for different blokes.
This is amazing. One of the best things I've ever seen on TH-cam. My boy loves Bluey and tomorrow we'll be tracking down this episode.
Yep, it's every bit as good as he says it is. Whoever wrote this episode and directed the animation knew *exactly* what they were doing.
Billions of Bluey minutes watched it crazy considering an episode is 7mins.
Loved this episode already and your narration of it was top notch. ❤
Omg tears was flowing at the end so good this show is. Not too sure if having kids has made me nore emotional or its the episode 😅
Saw it mentioned on Twitter and had to watch it. My first episode of Bluey.
60 yo Aussie MAN here, mate I enjoyed that video, yes I remember the start of WSC under lights & Tony Greig explaining fielding positions using EA Sports vid games, Kerry Packer created a great product with that, oh, don't forget "Strop" (John Cornell) actually went to Kerry with the Idea
Ive been waiting for this episode to come onto UK Tv. My daughter loves bluey so will be getting this on soon. Fireman Sam in early 90s had Sam playing cricket not sure of the impact on Welsh cricket though
Absolutely loved your show ! My Indian-American son loves bluey and I am not going to show him the cricket episode and hopefully get him interested in the game
My 8 year old girl is hooked on cricket now, thanks to Bluey. I've got her a bat and wicket, and have taught myself how to bowl googly. Nice that there's 10 stores around Toronto where I can buy all things cricket
My brother showed me this episode when I was visiting my nephews. Saw him cry! Truly is a great piece of media
As a brit have to acknowledge an Aussie namechecking a saffa with due respect "cut shot like a prime graeme pollock" .
Everything Aussie cricket but the underarm controversy represented 😉😮. Nice work Bluey. 😊
❤ From access the ditch. Sweet as video. Brilliantly explained. 🏏🏏🏏🇳🇿🇦🇺
Yep, you guys will NEVER let us forget that one & honestly it mared Greg & Trevor's reputations even to this day.
I’m 50 odd with no kids in my life and I sought out this episode and had tears more than once 😅. Loved the episode and your analysis of it!
I have a 9 year old daughter and she absolutely loves Bluey and won’t lie I sneak in an episode or two with her coz I like it too.. haven’t seen this episode yet though, will check out
I genuinely think this is one of the best bit of children's TV ever made.
Fantastic video… great analysis. Never been to this channel before… saw it randomly on my feed. Subscribed.
Terrific content as usual! I sometimes watch Bluey with my kids. It is a light hearted show and people can relate to it. Have not watched this episode yet, but am going to do now. 😊
Report back when you're done!
Not sure I'd call the episodes dealing with miscarriage, infertility, divorce, child abandonment, various psych conditions, difficulties of parenting, etc... 'light hearted' per se.. heh
Saffa here...I discovered Bluey thru my kids and I enjoy it thoroughly, I need to find this cricket episode ! PS nice Pollock tip of the hat...
Excellent analysis. I couldn’t help but think about the impact this might have on cricket worldwide too. Cricket, tbh - doesn’t feature in my top 10 list of sports I enjoy watching, but I have a new found appreciation for it, as a result of the Bluey cricket episode!
Cricket has a pretty big global footprint, it's the second biggest sport in the world.
This show has led to a growth in lots of bits of Australian culture and even slang world wide. Going for the cultural victory.
Isn’t Bluey’s sister out hit wicket (rather than bowled)? 2:13
As an Aussie I’m confused at why the red dog isn’t called bluey
This is why the Ozzies haven't effing well sold the rights to the third season to the UK yet. It's all about the Ashes 2040s
We should have some kind of Ted Lasso for Cricket where each episode has story but also one key concept of cricket is explained during the episode for a first timer.
As a parent I refuse to admit how many times Bluey has made me cry.
This is an amazing piece!
I absolutely love the cricket episode.
Now all they need to do is a footy episode.
The Decider is a start to exploring footy culture at least
@@ShaylaShaylala it’s about rugby though.
Made in Brissy. Not gonna happen, sadly.
@@greybirdo never say never. Brisbane Lions are up and about. They’ve done cricket and the rugby codes.
Played baseball since I was 4 years old and I relate to this episode tremendously.
Id argue jomboy is one of the biggest promoters for cricket in the US
As a Crickfan I can clearly say,
Never before has cricket been so popular.
this is my favourite bluey episode
Best Bluey episode ever!
Bro I barely played cricket as a kid, and bluey aint exactly my cup of tea, but god dammit this had me ready to break, 6:22 then his brother putting the pads on queued the waterworks
I am 30 😂
What the fuck
7:37 alright proper crying now
Fucking bluey man, the most wholesome/gut wrenching show ivr ever seen😭
This is brilliant, love the content as always 🔥 as a man in his mid 20s I might have to start watching Bluey 😂
- James
@LanternRougeCycling and Jarrod Kimber are you related?
Pax Australiana, 10,000 hours of my and brothers childhood, summed up in a cartoon, thanks Dad. Thanks Bluey
My 2 year old is obsessed with Bluey. And I am obsessed with cricket. Now I am really curious which episode this was. Can someone please share the link? Thanks!
@AmdSid season 3 episode 47 it's the final one released to date
Thank you! I just saw the reply!
Episodes about divorce, miscarriage, difficulties of parenting... and a few others. If anything, it can give ideas on games to play :)
Most popular Dads cartoon episode for kids ever!
As a dad, I don't mind the kids watching bluey as there are few episodes I don't enjoy watching myself. This one is my favourite.
As an outsider, the response to this episode seems to have the same impact for cricket in Australia, as the manga and anime "Hikaru no Go" had for Go (sort of like a version of chess) in japan.
Bluey featured both codes of Rugby in The Decider - the Gold team at the end are the Wallabies (and yes, I'm clutching at straws).
Nah that's definitely Kangaroos vs NZ Kiwis. I don't get the impression Bluey's family care for an elitist sport like rugby union tbh.
@@Lockieez The Kangaroos don't play in gold (the Jillaroos do) and neither team has Vs. I love both codes, don't take this away from me!
@@LockieezThat's projection mate. Lot's of people enjoy both codes with no issue.
What would’ve have made this episode better was having moms like chilli and co, having a crack at Rusty. I think inclusion in cricket has improved a lot, but this episode could’ve taken it further to showcase it to the non-cricketing world! Minor gripe on an otherwise a lovely episode and series.
Excellent observations
The only episode of Bluey that made me cry.
So you haven’t seen Sleepytime?
I watched the episode, but I didn't expect this analysis.
My son is 6 months old and i cant wait for him to be old enough to watch TV so i can have an excuse to watch Bluey.
