Behringer is the only synth company that's giving us synth heads what we actually want. Roland is constantly dropping the ball, giving us a 4 voice digital Juno in toy size, Yamaha is basically doing the same. I'm glad that Behringer is bringing these affordable remakes though, more power to them!

@@wackenthaljef Hi Jeff. The original 909 and 808 are quite different, too (e.g. 808 fully analog vs 909 partially PCM; feeling and workflow of the knobs is different, kickdrum and other sounds 808 vs 909 ...).
Behringer creates here 2 'new versions' (I'd like to call them rather than clones) of 2 different instruments and they DO sound different (at least at SB2019).

  • @jacksonshelton8055

If Behringer did the unthinkable, they would make an instrument housing a hardware clone of the C64 SID chip.
Because so far, their hardware synth clones are amazing.

That clap reverb as you described it, isn't a knob on the original as is the Bassdrum tune..There both new controls.. Actually now looking at it, the hh filter isn't on the original either..!!

@@foljs5858 the new Roland drum machines are toys. They sound like garbage. Add all the "features" you want, but if the core instrument is sh!t, what use are they? You are obviously new to the game of electronic music. Old school producers prefer the old "analog magic" because the old machines sound amazing. Their simplicity is their greatest strength. They do one thing and they do it perfectly, as opposed to Roland's new boxes that are like jack of all trades master of none type devices.

The closest to the real thing of all the emulations that have ever existed in my opinion. My first electronic instrument was a TR-808 ( *given* to me by a friend who wasn't using it anymore after getting a new Boss DR-550!), so I know the sound well. The hardest thing to get right always seems to be the toms and congas which Behringer seem to have done a good job recreating. It's not 100%, but fuck it- it's close enough for the price vs $4000.

I think they have modeled the RD-8 at Behringer with a TR-808 model that they own. Especially the clap on RD-8 that has to wake up the first few hits, that just has something. I have heard an OG 808 in the past that sounded just bad maybe there was a defect but the claps and hihats didn't sound like anything. I myself have the RD-8 too and the TR-08 they sound good to my hearing! But they sound different enough to have them both. I'm looking forward to the RD-9 because I'm more of a 909 purist.

The only issue I have with it is I have much more capable equipment and for the same price you can get a Korg Electribe Sampler which can do everything this can and a whole lot more. Is this unit reliable so far? I think Behringer has been trying to improve their stuff but I have seen Behringer products that are built well, sound great, and have a lot of features but use crap quality capacitors and other low end components that reduce reliability. I wonder what the build quality is on the INSIDE. I don't expect a Behringer to last for 20+ years but I would like to have it for at least a little while. Some of their stuff is good and some isn't. • @StarskyCarr

Yes... me! I tried using an external keyboard when looking to see if it was velocity sensitive. It sounds like there’s quite a few hits and the volume goes through the roof. Oddly using MIDI patchbay on the Mac and selecting ‘use only midi channel’ but not selecting any sorted it out! Think this is one for a firmware update.

I’ve said this numerous times. Roland does not make analog gear anymore. They’d need to partner with a company like Studio Electronics like they did with the SE-02. They don’t have the infrastructure anymore for those kinds of builds. I’m sure the SE-02 prove to them that it wasn’t lucrative enough for that venture.

In my opinion, its very flawed argument to say 'it doesnt matter in the mix'.. golden rule of recording: crap goes in, crap comes out.
Maybe a little different with synths than vocals, guitar etc. But still.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Very minor differences probably won’t make a difference from a synth perspective as it’s usually slight changes that could be eq’d out or very minor differences in envelopes etc. Unless it’s a major part of the sound - so some things are really difficulty to reproduce. Take Yazoo Only You arpeggiator. It’s an iconic sound and I’ve not been able to create the same tone with anything other than the vintage original Pro-One. So normally in the mix it’s not an issue... but that’s the start of the track - out on its own it’s got a unique sound - like a vocal in that respect.
It’s really not the same as crap goes in crap comes out from eg vocals where the crap is maybe an out of tune note, bad performance, odd compression or mic positioning or acoustics that are really difficult to fix.

While I love what behringer is doing, you really do get what you pay for with these things. Im not surprised they gave zero shits about a manual. And lets see what happens when the thing starts breaking down. Cheap products are much more annoying to repair than quality stuff. We'll see 10 years down the line how all this gear has held up to touring and repairs. Granted you can just keep throwing them in the garbage and buy new ones for how cheap they all are.

    • @soulixier6939

I really do understand your comment, but feel compelled to add that there was a time when Roland knocked out cheap plastic synths, tb303,mc202,sh101, slated at the time for build quality, but there are quite a few still changing hands today. Same thing could happen for Behringer over the same span of time. As ever time will tell.

..the ship has sailed and Roland has missed the boat once again.. Roland is going get their panties in a bunch when sales start skyrocketing on this RD-8 and crash on their TR-08 which serves them right.. Roland stopped making quality hardware in the 90's and instead mass produced crap for extreme prices.. trust me I used to work for Mar's music until Mar's closed and Guitar Center first opened.. I would offer Yamaha over Roland even to my worst enemy.. who in their right mind wants a digitally tame TR-08 or TR-09 unless it is to be used while slipping a $6 coffee latte in the morning after an gourmet wine hangover.. to be fair Behringer did mass produce defective mixers in the beginning but it appears like they finally got their act together just in time to steal a top slot in the pro audio gear market.. well done Behringer you took your past revenue and put it to good use.. lets see what happens next while Korg and Behringer battle it out to be the next king.. meanwhile Yamaha and especially Roland slide down the slippery stripper pole of the music meat market..
