Setting Up an "O-Rig" on a MRS System - Bartlett Climbing Techniques

  • The "O-Rig" is a wonderful mechanical advantage system for use in MRS climbing systems, and it can be set up three different ways! The best part about mechanical advantage? It saves your arms from all the strain of ascending yourself.
    Which of these three styles will work best for you? Setting it up with a roll-lock, a prussic cord, or with a thimble loop?

    Perfect. Was thinking how to get a long truly self tending pull out of the hitch climber. Boom!

    Great entertainment value! ‘Floating Prusik’ is what Hitch Climber’s guide to the Canopy calls it, p19. I like it as a work-around if/when your rope lacks an eye splice - the termination knot can go below the pulley instead of above hitch. Another plus - length can be adjusted under load. Paracord makes it compact.

    Good demonstration. I have always referred to this as the "Floating Prusik System" as per the Climber's Guide to the Canopy. That is because the prusik "floats" up and down the rope depending on the length of your arms. I do it with a small prusik loop made from 3 or 4 mm cord that is long enough so that the prusik knot sits above the climber's friction hitch. That way the prusik knot cannot accidentally push down on the top of the climber's friction hitch.

    Hey man, been following you guys for sometime, with this system can you also add in any other mechanical components like your foot and hand ascenders? to further assist with making your climb smooth?

    • @BartlettArboristSupply

      Thanks for the follow!
      Adding a foot and knee ascender into the mix will assist. We don't recommend throwing a hand ascender into the O-Rig due the extended length of the system.

    I like this system though I got tired of setting it up so I just made my bridge adjustable so I can accend this way

    Say my zigzag or any other mechanical friction brake isnt really feeding a particular type of rope thru quite as I want it and I need to tend slack. Can any of you find a reason why this type of set up wouldnt work on any other type of brake? Didnt find anything about it in the zigzag manual.

    This is great! Can this be done with a Notch Rope Runner Pro? I am trying to envision how that would work?

    • @BartlettArboristSupply
      @BartlettArboristSupply  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It should work with a Rope Runner Pro. However, be cautious with the tending prussic and the mini carabiner as it could potentially interfere with the bird. Setting it up and staying low to the ground would be best when experimenting this (as with any new technique or piece of gear).

      @@BartlettArboristSupply Thanks! I think I may try the Roll-lock. This just looks so much easier. I have been spiking and tending with a lifeline rope and it gets sore on the shoulders and elbow after a few hours.

  • @joehenington6666
    @joehenington6666 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Could you continue to use the rollnlock while limb walking? After setting your canopy anchor and tie offs.

    • @BartlettArboristSupply
      @BartlettArboristSupply  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are you reconfiguring to an SRS system?
      However, you should still be able to incorporate the Roll n Lock for a mechanical advantage pull. You will require a bit more gear though.

      @@BartlettArboristSupply Oh sorry forgot to mention climbing method. No it would be for DRT. I am pretty green only been working ropes for about a month. Using a blakes hitch or the vt. I think I would enjoy srs but more is needed. Plus I am not sure of the added friction with rope wrench

    • @BartlettArboristSupply
      @BartlettArboristSupply  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In this case, you can still leave the Roll N Lock in the O-Rig configuration for limb walking. Just remember to leave the hitch in arms reach for emergencies.

    incredible slow and you don't use your feet at all. how is this supposed to save energy? this looks more like playing around with gear.

    • @BartlettArboristSupply
      @BartlettArboristSupply  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sounds like you may climb SRS, which is great but not everyone wishes to incorporate ascenders into their climbing style. So, this technique is geared more towards those that do not wish to, and eliminates the need to stop and slack tend every few feet climbed.
