Did anyone else besides me find Claire Forlani to be absolutely captivating in this movie? I don't mean just her looks, but her entire portrayal of the Susan Parrish character. Susan Parrish would have been a heartbreaker.
As a side note, I bet the women feel the same way about Joe Black. 🤣 As another side note; Are the men in Canada all fools? How come a good guy hasn't already taken Dasha off the market? I can only assume that the guys there are overwhelmingly foolish.
eh, she has one facial expression throughout the whole movie..... and to be honest, throughout her whole career... the term "one-note" seems to be a perfectly accurate description of her acting skills... she isn't bad at it, but she certainly is no character actor
Let's be fair here, as I didn't appraise her versatility nor her performance in other movies. In this particular movie, IMO, she played Susan well. Susan comes across as a girl you believe Death could actually fall for. Aside from being beautiful Susan is kind, vulnerable, feminine, and absolutely smitten. All of this comes across very believable. Maybe Forlani was actually taken with Brad Pitt IRL, I don't know, but the way Susan looks at Joe I completely believe she's deeply in love. I think she did a fantastic job as Susan.
I love the way Brad Pitt manages to convey so much in just his eyes and the attitude of his head. Joe Black has a certain childlike innocence about so many things that he has never experienced before, in spite of the fact that he has existed for so long. His compassion towards the old lady is incredibly moving and shows a quality to him that is unexpected, given who he is. The acting (of all the cast) is superb. I think this movie is one of the most incredible movies ever made. One of my favourite films. Acting, script, concept and music is so original. Chemistry between Brad and Claire in the coffee shop is intoxicating.
The music score is just AMAZING, it is my absolute favourite soundtrack!! And the movie itself is in my top 5. Lovely reaction as always Dasha, thanks! ❤️
Meet Joe Black is on my favorite movies list and I was really curious how Dasha would react to this film. She did not disappoint! I loved how she picked up the nuances, gleaning more and more over time as this film is designed to. Well done! Now go have peanut butter and cake!!! 👌
This film is a remake of the 1934 film "Death Takes a Holiday," starring Fredric March, Evelyn Venable, and Guy Standing. Another film with a similar theme is "On Borrowed Time" (1939), starring Lionel Barrymore and Cedric Hardwick.
She fell in love with the guy at the coffee shop and everything else afterwards was kind of the fallout of that, when death revealed himself to her she was terrified but accepted him, like Hopkins character says to death "Susan went for that poor son of a bitch whose body you took. And everything else since has been aftermath"
Well you are a bit wrong... she didn't love death, she loved death's cover, she loved the guy... still and always... so at the end she gets the guy she started to love at the beginning.
While I think the argument could be made either way, I agree with you. I think Susan was already smitten by the man at the coffee shop. When she met Death she still believed it was the same guy. While Death spent more time with her and she fell harder, I still believe that guy in the coffee shop stole her heart.
I didn't think it would be better than Heaven Can Wait which I watched all by myself one summer afternoon in 1979 when I was just 18 on HBO... I was more touched by the friendship between Max Corkle and Joe than anything else...I believe I actually shed a tear when Joe became Tom (completely) "why do you keep calling me Joe?" I confess, Jack Warden took up a place in my heart from that point on... Meet Joe Black out did it and I added the film to my collection and have watched it countless times...the soundtrack floors me. Anthony Hopkins... wow, what an actor... man.
I was gifted the most beautiful time. When each of my parents passed, it was so comforting to watch absolute peace come upon them. Mortal death in this situation of being ready is not depressing. Sad to be sure, but a peaceful ambiance of greater value, I've never found in 60 years. ❤
Beautifully said. Someone once said "how we deal with death is as important as how deal with life." It's not the end, just passing through another door.
I think you have missed the point. She fell for the man she met in the coffee shop, which is why death realises she isn't in love with him, which is why he allows the man from the coffee shop to come back. He, not death, is the one she is destined to be with.
"A girl can't catch a break! The first guy was a jerk, & the second guy was Death!" 😅🤣😂 I love the ending. Bill must be lying dead on the grass a few yards away, but hey, let's get to know the cute guy better & go back to the party. We can take care of Daddy's corpse later! 🤷🏻♂️
No. There was a subtle time shift. She tells him, "I wish you could have known my father." Bill Parrish wasn't lying dead in the grass. Watch it again.

I just LOVED when you were talking about putting this movie off because of the run-time, then fast-forward to you being all giddy throughout almost not wanting it to end, lol. That was beautiful. 1993's Remains of the Day as well as 1987's 84 Charring Cross, both gems to watch for him in case you need more Anthony Hopkins, although MJB is a beautifully high bar to match.
Hey dasha nice reaction just wanted to clarify some thing for you when you thought mr perish was describing love as lighting it was meant to have her daughter to stay open and about death he wasn’t going to take her to hell he guides people to the other world or he wouldn’t have taken the lady in the hospital
Funny bit of trivia = Meet Joe Black had huge opening week box office numbers because it was the first film to show the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace trailer. Many to most just bought a ticket, watched the preview at the beginning, and left.
A stunning film with exceptional performances from Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Claire Forlani and several others. Interesting concept, great script, great locations, that all come together to produce a captivating film. I've introduced quite a few people to this film and every single one has loved it.

Love this movie! Love watching with Dasha! Love watching our Beautiful Dasha's mind work and seeing her figure out the plot twists so quickly! So beautiful and so smart!
You should see Anthony Hopkins in 'The Father' (2020) He won the best actor Oscar for that movie. Also a personal favorite with him is 'Instinct' (1999)
Anthony Hopkins plays a wise older billionaire so well. My favorite is The Edge(1997). It costars Alec Baldwin surviving the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash.
This movie is one of my favourites. Not a liked movie by people and they don't understand it ☹️ If I'm down or have a bad day this movie goes on and cheers me up. I cry 😿 every time. I believe in love at first sight 😁 You never know, lighting may strike 😁😁👍
Dasha... suck it up! It is a long movie but a really good movie. I have seen it many times and never knew it was 3 hours until you mentioned it. so put on your big girl pants and jump in!
I mean, she only gave death a chance because she was falling for cafeteria guy, and she can't sit there and hold in to "love" for Death because he's not coming back, and also, as he father told him, she never really knew him.
@@AllmondISP ... To each their own, ya know? For some, it is a must-see. I thought it was good but not great. Way too long and slow in some scenes. I gave it a B - Minus.
if it was your last day, that could be great; but if you had to go back to being yourself, you would never fully enjoy your life, again. rather than wish you could be someone else, it's best to figure out what makes you special, and live your life with a focus on those things
One of the best parts of this story is how Bill admits that he does have a favorite daughter - SUSAN. It's human nature to favor one child over another, yet people deny it every day. Quite often, a parent will strongly connect with one child but not with another child. Individual personalities, temperaments, and interests are always part of the connection.
They deny it out of love, not self-denial. Just because a feeling may exist, it doesn't mean it needs to be expressed to the world. They likely don't want to hurt their other child/children and so claim to have no favorite.
@@edmunddantes7097 ….Totally agree. Parents would have to be really cruel to admit to one child - a young child - that they favor another child over him or her. Parents try their best to treat their children equally, but sometimes, the favoritism is unintentionally visible.
Societal norms, and even Biblical scripture cautions the practice of favoritism, but it's such a strong phenom (as with Jacob and Joseph) it can cause major rifts in any family -

@GetFitwithDogs, Agreed, a Susan Parrish would have been married before she became a doctor, women like that are taken of the dating scene early! 😢
Yes, I agree. A smart and worthy man wouldn't be so dumb as to let a catch like her go. He'd be a fool to.
