    Glad you actually showed exactly what the wrong positions are, there are so many videos out there telling you about all the wrong positions and all but not many showing exactly what not to do and this made it much easier to identify the problems!

    • @skng
      @skng  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes cl191 we thought it was important to visually show the most common problems that we see in skiing. We're also adding it to our Ski School Apps so that you can use the built in split-screen analysis to easily compare yourself directly to the films and potentially find the issues that are stopping your skiing from progressing. Find the problem, fix the problem.

    Hey Darren, I am an instructor who is always trying to learn more and I love your videos. These are all very common issues I see daily on the hill. Another common one that isn't mentioned as much is the correct boot/ski combo for the skier. I cannot tell you how many times I see beginner or intermediate skier out on big fat Soul 7's or other big powder skis just having a hell of a time getting them to turn or do anything. Sometimes a simple gear change can improve someone's skiing immensely.

    I'm just checking by, as I'm trying to help a few friends get better this season and enjoyed the video. One tip that I personally have, which I learned from my mentor, is to practice making turns on one ski only, in all possible edge combinations. Obviously, if turning left off of your left outside edge is too difficult, skip it, but I've found that it really helps you lock in how the turn should feel, as well as force better upper body stability.
    Great video, definitely will come back in January.

      Totally agree!!! Making turns by the lower mountain ski only really helps a lot to avoid standing on the inner side ski. If you stand on the inner ski, you will feel impossible to lift up the inner ski. I helped my friend with this problem by letting her lift up inner ski while doing turns and succeeded in only several runs.

    So glad to see some new videos! Also it's great to see you demonstrate the techniques so many others use on the slopes and let us know what's wrong with them - the big one for me is the legs tied together technique, it seems so bizarre! At the end of the day novices watch what other more experienced skiers do and picking up strange habits isn't that difficult.

    Great video! I used to have some of these probe but have already corrected most of them. It is common that you tend to stand on your inner ski while turning at first, so many people have this problem. You will find it really difficult to control if you do so on really steep piste. Making one ski turns by the lower mountain ski only really helps a lot to avoid standing on the inner side ski. If you stand on the inner ski, you will feel impossible to lift up the inner ski. I helped my friend with this problem by letting her lift up inner ski while doing turns and succeeded in only several runs.

    Great vid as usual and very useful tips. I'm doing one of those mistakes all the time, I'm turning the upper body before I'm actually start to turn and some times it can lead to quite "strange" body positions during and after the turn :) I have to remember that the turn starts with the skies and NOT with the upper body rotation. Thanks again.

    The narrow stance thing is sometimes just a holdover from the previous generation of skiers. It's how I was taught back in the 80's and I still do it now on easy to moderate incline piste just because it's more comfortable. See Harold Harb's old videos for the type of stance I mean. I have, however, learned to widen it up some for more stability on steeper technical terrain.

    Excellent series of videos, clear explanation of technique and great quality video, which helps. Had a problem recently with changing snow conditions. Ice and then wet sticky snow which was getting pushed up into crud. How is the best way to takle these conditions. I understanding for wet snow it is best to keep skis closer together and use long turns not short turns. Tips on these conditions would be helpful. Keep them coming Darren. Thank you.

  • @deweypug
    @deweypug 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Hello from New Hampshire! As a lifelong skier, I made the transition from straight skis to parabolic skis - In addition to watching this channel, take a few lessons every two or three years just to keep bad habits from getting worse. Question for you: One thing that a instructor said a few years ago that really helped me from high speed carving to skiing steeps was to be 'vertically dynamic', that is, to compress into turns and to release or 'stand-up' slightly out of turns. I see and hear many professionals argue that this is not a proper technique - they say to 'flex' and stay over the skis to maintain contact with the snow. I think that technique makes one look like they are 'hunched over' constantly and its looks 'anti-dynamic' if you will. Please comment if you could!

    • @wishbone569
      @wishbone569 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know exactly what you are describing. Flex in the ankles, centred over the skis and a slight bend at the waist can make you feel hunched. Compressing progressively into the turn helps me.

    • @noeliu
      @noeliu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is an inheritance from the older techniques wich made us flex and stand. Nowadays the tecnique has developed into a flow of turns in which you dont really change your flex level so much. You have to push the skis harder to get the reaction and start the next turn, but you dont change your stance, just flow from one turn to another. Take care mate!

    • @hartzland7658
      @hartzland7658 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wishbone569 Yep me too, i think of it as weighting & unweighting the skis from one turn to the next.

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My take is that the body still extends and shortens, but the action is not so much vertical, but instead it's more sideways. This is because when carving, the skis take a wider path as they turn down the hill than the upper body does. So the body lengthens to push the skis away as the turn begins, then starts to progressively shorten once the skis reach the fall line and come back under the skier.
      The purpose of lengthening is no longer to "unweight", but to press the outside ski firmly into the snow. The avoidance of unweighting is because an advanced skier wants to have plenty of weight on the new outside ski very early in the turn. But there is a very helpful nuanced form of unweighting at this level of skiing, which is to slightly lift the front of the feet by powerfully flexing the ankles WITHOUT moving the knees forward, at the instant the edges change, in order to momentarily lighten the ski tips only.

    Loved the supporting video - very descriptive and concise. It might make more sense to put the too much body rotation and too much counter segments in sequence, though, as they're both the extreme ends of the same spectrum of movement. Over rotation is too little upper/lower body separation (plus some), and too much counter is too much upper/lower body separation.

    So pleased I didn't listen to my friends that insist I don't need a lesson and that time will fix things, the 2 major issues I knew I had wrong I have no idea how to fix without a lesson. So happy to see you listed both of them here and I realize I'm doing them, using my upper body to throw into a turn, which I've stopped a lot but need to stop completely and Lifting my leg to turn . Great videos. Is there one on controlling speed or maybe that just happens when you know the CORRECT way to ski ?

  • @bjorn3923
    @bjorn3923 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I seem to catch my inside edge often when carving, now I know there can be multiple variables associated with this such as
    1- Haven’t waxed or tuned skis in 6 months
    2- Mt Hood snow can become concrete like
    3- My form is slacking (I’m still on my 2nd day this season)
    4- I’m breaking in new boots

    • @j-efaw
      @j-efaw 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That happened to me. Try leaning forward more and pressing you shins up against the front of the boot when going for a turn. Also dont be afraid to take some speed at first when going for the turn. This will happen because you skis should be completely flat on the ground. This will build up speed but also allow you to turn more easily.

    Can you describe what you are feeling in your boots as you start to carve a turn. Where do you feel the pressure ? Shins , big toe, ball of the feet ?

    • @RushLaazr
      @RushLaazr 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike G Probably toe and shins

    • @11mousa
      @11mousa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ideal case: both shins, complete inside of the outside ski (stronger), and complete outside of the inside ski (slightly weaker). However, hardly anybody is that perfect, mostly you will have slightly more pressure on the heel or the ball (the ball is the "better" strong position)

    • @blackestjake
      @blackestjake 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike G at the start of the turn three things are happening in the boot.
      1) the weight is transferred to the new ski so you should feel pressure under the new turning ski
      2) there is a steering or turning effort in the new direction with legs and feet. You should feel that pivoting effort with ball of foot and outside heel or ankle creating pressure inside boot
      3) the ski tips over onto the new inside edge which is felt in the ankle and arch of the foot as the hips and knees move inside new turn.

    Dear Darren, thank you for your priceless videos. They accompany me on the slopes on a daily basis. Would you have any advice on the beginning of the turn not just the carving bit? Ie how do we initiate the turn, and relevant leg formation/weight balance.

  • @christianschwalbach7561
    @christianschwalbach7561 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the last point he made can often be a carry over from the days of skiing on old straight metals. Ie early 90s and before. There was a certain flair attached to it, and not to mention the edging method was not conducive to carves. I can see how an outside lean could become ingrained in technique

    Have you thought about series partnered up with the app carv? How do you use the carv app to recognize these types of mistakes in your skiing so you can know when you're having them (other than having a camera man) and how do you work to improve it.

    These are great demos but I do agree that at least 3 sins are not sins under other conditions. As he mentions in the bumps pros use a tight stance and a very flat ski. As you get into high speed carving you also see what could be called an a-frame type position where the outside ski is dominant and extended. On a slower easier pitch, the A-frame he demonstrated-while perhaps not necessary- would be a great foundation for adding speed. Finally, the outward facing carve looks fine.. don't know what "blocked" means? it could help as a cue to a skier throwing their upper body around, or in steeps, where you want to keep your center of mass out over your skis, and down the fall line. So I'd asterisk three of the seven sins as trend driven-they're technically sound, just contrary to the current look and need of groomer skiers-which is the shins parallel wide- tracking, medium-speed medium to long radius turn in moderate groomed terrain.

  • @alexisdecotis8135
    @alexisdecotis8135 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The a-frame thought of skiing on both edges will give you a problem on imperfect surface. Solid with one edge and floating with other edge. Or 100% power on downhill edge and 20% on uphill. You need that for reactionary ability.

    • @okcouper3410
      @okcouper3410 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alexis Decotis Yeah but look at world cup skiers. At high speeds they are 100% on outside ski, inside ski basically an inrigger, not much weight on it at all... and yes you see the so-called a-frame in their stance... so imo a-frame label more of a style points issue for the recreational groomer skier rather than a true problem. in steeps also, a frame everywhere.

    So what about skiing crust that breaks over your ankles? I use the boots together then too; to make only one track through the crust, and to get a stiffer system to work with.

    I have nice turns but only on one side of my body, when I ski to the right I have a nice carve. As to when I ski to the left, it feels very weak and forced with little carving. Any tips?

    • @gogglebro9421
      @gogglebro9421 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The general advice given is to lift the heal of the inside foot just enough to release pressure off the tail of the inside ski before starting to turn with the outside ski. The purpose is to prevent the dominate inside foot from interferring with the weaker outside foot. Harald Harb has videos about phantom edge or tipping explaining how this is done.
