This is my first season (2020-21) to ski and I've gone from not being able to stand up on a bunny slope to skiing black diamonds (moguls and steeps) in 3 months. I credit this channel for my progress. I only wish I could go meet Darren Turner and give him a hug - and maybe take a private lesson.

I cannot begin to explain how helpful these videos have been in my development as a skier. Thank you so much for helping me go from a mediocre intermediate to a pretty goof advanced skier. As an adult learner, I will never be the best skier on the mountain, but with my improved skills, I can continue to enjoy steeper terrain despite my declining courage and strength.

Yesterday, I did my first carve turns and I realized that for the most part, with carving, you just need to commit to it and not worry about falling over

Yah. Something else happened to me. I was at Alyeska and I took the wrong turn. I ended up in a giant blue square hill. No fun for me that day. I’m a bad skier.

@@elevatorman5468 Spend the time on the skis, and when discouraged, push through. I was having about my 7th rough day learning when it clicked. Places I was trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to dump speed on one day, by the end if the next I was tucking trying to go faster. It all started with carved turns for me, once I could feel the skis edges it was a wrap. I do disagree with people saying carved turns start at the ankles, then knees, for me, carved turns start at my toes. For a lefty turn, start with pressure at the ball behind your big toe in your right foot. Good luck and once you get it, it's the funnest thing ever.

And this is the problem I'm having. Last season I started parallel skiing and it was amazing. But when I tried to carve, I felt like I was going to fall really badly so I stopped. How did you overcome that?

    • @rawr6306
      @rawr6306 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@davidn.2555 I’ll possibly be having the same issues soon as I just bought new skis etc. having not been skiing in 25+ years 😬 I’m at an age where I’m just going to go for whatever I feel like doing though. Anyways the skis I got have a good size shovel & tail with a decently narrow waist so 🤞🏻 Since I ice skate and know how to use my edges there I’m hoping this may help me. If you don’t trust/commit to your edges skating you’re hitting the ice which isn’t fun so 🤷🏻‍♂️

Last week I went skiing. I had only tried skiing once before, when I was 14. That was back when Ronald Reagan was president of America, and I spent most of my time on my backside. Nowadays I live in Japan, and last week we went to Hokkaido, where the slopes were basically empty, despite the perfect conditions. I spent 3 hours with a teacher who didn't speak English, but managed to teach me the basics very well. It was a little terrifying when we moved to the real slopes, but I found I could handle it (more or less). She went over much of what was covered in the video, and I found that I could handle the slopes much better than I thought. I ended up having a lot of fun, and am looking forward to getting in another ski holiday this winter. You don't have to be young to get started skiing, or to be able to enjoy it.

Find a very flat slope start by pointing both skis straight down the hill and very gently start to roll both skis on to their edges. Let both ages progressively build up through the turn, stop and try the same thing in the other direction.Have a look at the tracks you leave it will let you know whether you are edging equal amounts on both skis. hope this helps

Good video. ONE VERY IMPORTANT NUANCE... At 1:42 you mention "roll those knees and ankles in toward the slope". While it might seem unimportant, it is critical to understand the ANKLES BEGIN TO ROLL FIRST and lead the knees! The ankle roll into the boot is that which creates leverage inside the boot and consequently the solid connection to the ski (that's what you're seeing with "powerful" skiers). Another important thing to note is how high in the turn Darren is beginning the carve. A really good carved turn carves the top of the turn as well as the middle and the bottom.

@@iamagummywurm7120 To me, carved turns start with my toes. I initiate a turn with pressure on the balls of my feet, then ankles, then knees. I learned the progression this way, I went from unconfidently skiing all green runs and in a days time I was skiing black diamonds.

@@BigKeithDog Wow... This video is long in the tooth. But someone "hearted" it yesterday (11-21-2022). Seeing your reply I thought that it might be appropriate to expand what you've said a bit that I think was a critical "aha" moment in my skiing. What I alluded to in my commment was LEVERAGE BUT I wasn't specific regarding where the leverage actually starts. I had cited the ankles while you cited the toes. It is actually more specific than these two elements/approaches. There is a "PIVOT POINT" on the foot that is right behind the ball of the foot and toward the center of the foot. THAT IS ACTUALY YOUR ***BALANCE POINT***. Not the arch or the toes or the ankles. If you support that centered area with a SUBTLE "metatarsal pad" (just enough support to feel it) you can actually roll off of it left, right, fore, aft while articulating your ankle. So the leverage starts at the bottom of the foot, a bit forward and inside of center. It will generate the most amount of leverage and the most fine control with very little actual physical movement. I often tell my students that I start my turns by TWITCHING MY FEET, which is pretty much what I do. Once you get the leverage started in the direction you like, the ski's edge begins to take over and the articulation of the joints are mostly following/guiding from there on unless you need more leverage or angulation. But because of the efficiency you are in a position to add more with very little motion because everything is aligned and working at maximum efficiency. This is a prime example of "less is more". FWIW I only discorered the phenomonon of the "pivot point" when I discovered insoles that came with metatarsal pads that didn't support at the edges of my feet, but in the center. Once someone gets it, it is mind blowing.

If you get two coins one bigger than the other and draw half a circle around them the smaller coin will have a tighter radius it's a similar idea. In this video I'm skiing on a 170 skis I am about the same height. Fatter skis with sidecut will still carve but are harder to rolled from edge to edge. Hope this clears a few things up, Darren

One thing I found that carving turn brings a lot more pressure to the legs then skid turn but at the same time is less "tiring" then the skid one. And its quick :) for a while I will stay on blue slopes as even on those you can go quite fast while carving. Thanks again!

While carving a snowboard and ski has the same concept [up on edge, causes the board/ski to conform to the slope, causing a turn], there are additional things a snowboarder can do to initiate an aggressive carve line, i.e.: twist the snowboard [like if you were to twist a business card/playing card]

All the time, there were two sentences of Darren Turner in my mind: "No skidding" and "Be patient". Although I knew what to do, I didn't achieve that... There was skidding, I didn't bend my knees and ankles enough. I am dissapointed, and I think that I will hire a teacher next year again. For an expert skier or a racer heart packed icy snow is ideal for carving but you need two things very good edges and to be placed and balanced perfectly on your skis, but for most recreational skiers fairly grippy snow will be much better to start to feel the sensations of a carved turn.

@MrHoody1988 It's great to get positive feedback from other instructors, glad you like it. If you or any of your colleagues use an iphone you could use the video analysis feature to compare your students with a demonstration of mine or film your own demos. Thanks again have a good New Year.

That's great to hear, you probably need to introduce a small amount of skid into your turn there is nothing wrong with skidding, accept for the very best skiers you have to have a small amount of skid as the gradient increases.

Darren is my favorite ski instructor on youtube. I can carve cleanly but when the slope gets a bit steeper, i find myself going faster and faster and there's not a lot of space around me to do a bigger "S" carve. how do i overcome that speed ?

Finish your turns pointing slightly uphill. Remember the mantra: Don't turn to slow down; slow down to turn.

You will have to introduce a small amount of skidding and rotation into your skiing, turn your feet slightly more at the beginning of the turn to help you control the speed, thanks and I'm pleased you enjoyed the films.

@COUGA10FH It is a great progression to understand how the shape of the ski works and feel the edge build up gradually. Very useful. Glad you liked it. Have you tried the comparison and analysis functionality in our Ski School Apps? We think instructors will find it very useful to use with their clients.
