  • Two head end rides from the films of Red Moser. First, a trip from Philadelphia to Newark on the Crusader service in July 1975, then a Sunday trip to Philadelphia and return to Reading on the Sunday before passenger service ended for good on June 30, 1981.

    I grew up in North Philly in the 70's and I remember watching the RDC's run past East Falls housing projects at speed headed towards the Reading Terminal, When I was 14 a relative of mine arraigned a ride along in the cab of a 3 unit RDC run from the East Falls station into downtown and into the Terminal , A as kid from the hood this was the treat of a lifetime !!!!!

      I grew up in Logan North Philly, in the 70s and early 80s, and I loved watching the RDC and Reading freight trains go past Logan Station, and at Newtown junction. Now only memoirs remain.

    Awesome footage! I grew up in Belle Mead and would often see the Budds drop off passengers in the evening. I've never found any video of that station online, but hope to someday.

      My grandparents lived on 2nd Ave near the Hill To Hill bridge (Bethlehem). Every summer I'd ride the Budd cars into Philly and back. I was just a kid and those RDC rides were a real treat for me!! Now I hear ppl say they wish there was commuter service between Beth and Philly again!

    That Crusader had one or more terribly square wheels. I guess maintenance was limited at best. Same sound on the RDC's. Maybe just lousy track?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First, the Crusader was an RDC at the time of filming. Second, the film was silent, the sounds are from my videos of BCRAIL Budds. Flat spots were not uncommon on RDCs as they had a primitive anti lock brake system (Rolokron) that often malfunctioned. Lack of maintenance of either equipment or track few was not a factor.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Reading & Northern has the 9166 and 9168. Reading RR Museum has the 9152, the last RDC built. RR Museum of PA has the LV 40 which was RDG 9163. BC Rail and MBTA got some of the others but I'm not sure of their current status.

    • @daveboydell2896
      @daveboydell2896 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      9156 went to BC rail to become BC 21. It is preserved in operational condition at the West Coast Railway museum in Squamish BC Canada.

    • @daveboydell2896
      @daveboydell2896 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A second Reading RDC is also at the WCRA Squamish Museum. However it is not operational and I believe is only kept as a parts source. Not sure what it's original RDG number was.

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fmnut The original Reading order being 9151-9162, that would make 9162 the last RDC ever built, unless they were built out of sequence. As for 9163 into the 9170's, those were all purchased secondhand by the Reading and PADOT.
      In the case of the ones that went to BC Rail and MBTA, most likely most of them are in deadlines somewhere, if not already scrapped, with the exception of the above-mentioned 9156.
