    Your channel is really the perfect mix between showing projects that are somewhat sophisticated, but on the other hand still focussing on what makes sense. Always something to learn when watching your videos. And by the way: My set of smart home projects looks very similar. The only thing I haven't done yet is individually addressable LED light strips. I think this will be one of my next projects...

    Top of my list has to be a strong secure WiFi. Without that nothing else works!

    Then security, door locks, door sensors, bells & video
    Finally automated widows & lights

    • @AlGoYoSu

      Went from a manual to motorized couch. It is a danger if you have small children or animals that could get underneath. We don't recline when the baby is in the room to avoid this. Ended up popping a large ball that rolled underneath the legs when they were up. The ball popped right away when the legs came down. One big difference between manual and electric is how long it takes to get out your seat from reclined. With a manual recliner you are out within a second, an electric one will take several. Also may be worth plugging into a battery backup if you're in an area with frequent power outages. Don't want to get caught stuck reclined when the power is out for an extended period of time.
      I have the Malmaison-Ash, it's comfortable, affordable, and the seats are plenty large.

    This was a really solid video. Lots of great ideas (and great warnings).
    I, too, find indoor RGB to be tacky for grownup spaces. But I've found one use that I like: circadian lighting in the darker corners of the house. I put an RGB bulb into an accent lamp and let Home Assistant keep it running 24x7 via the Circadian Lighting integration (via HACS). It's a great way to keep a little flavor of natural lighting in a room that normally wouldn't get it. At night you can have it shut off, or it dims down to an effective night light.
    On security cameras, the added pain of running ethernet cabling for PoE cameras is very worth it, I think, over the apparent ease of installation offered by battery-powered cameras.
    I'm pretty excited to get into the Home Assistant Companion for macOS. It offers up some sensors that will let me automate things like turning on my LED soft box and an "on the air" light outside my office when my webcam is on.

  • @TheDanielsherer
    @TheDanielsherer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think your comments about the blinds are insightful. We have more than a few places where we just leave the blinds/shutters closed all the time because it's not worth the hassle to go around to all of them twice a day to open/close. But if we had them automated...

    I was mostly agreeing until you go to indoor RGB’s. I’ve loved colored lights since I was kid and it still brings me a ton of joy to have them now as an adult. Not really worried about whether or not they’re tacky. Color is life, especially in my home studio. :-)

    Awesome video! Thank you for taking the time to evaluate and post. I've been playing with home automation for 20 plus years, having started back in the days of X-10, but haven't embraced it on the scale you have, I see several ideas/suggestions you made immediately, I'd like to borrow for my home.
    Something I'd like suggest you might find useful around your house are the outdoor light motion sensors with Z-wave built in. I picked one up from Homeseer to try and liked it so much I replaced the remaining 6. For starters I noticed they don't false nearly as much as the cheap ones you get at the big box stores, and secondly, since they are tied in with our Smart things controller, I have them set if one trips, it turns on ALL the lights around the house. Additionally, each one triggers a Philips Color Hue light bulb in a simple decorative desktop can light (one in the den, and one on the headboard of our bed) to come on a specific color (at 1% brightness so as not to wake my wife) to indicate which one tripped, and also the Echo on my side of the bed announces to me which zone was violated. Since I have cameras around my house as well, I have found if they come on, there is pretty much something there like an opossum, raccoon, or the neighbors cat.
    On a sidebar towards using an old time tested security system, the dog, I have one that runs outside at the drop of a hat when I say "squirrel", and even set Alexa up to announce "squirrel, squirrel, squirrel" when the outdoor motion detectors sense something to see if he would go out and look, but apparently the lack of excitement in her voice does nothing for him and that ended as a failed experiment. Since he sometimes sleeps in the bed between me and my wife, maybe that isn't a bad thing either as you can probably imagine.

    • @Mr.Meme01
      @Mr.Meme01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude you're an absolute genius and implemented ideas that I would only dream of executing. That motion lighting + light indicators for which sensor in your room is amazing from a home security perspective.
      Also, setting up the Alexa to say 'squirrel' to get your dog to bark is hilarious. I would suggest setting it up to play a door bell sound instead. Anytime I play a door bell sound on my phone, or one on TV matches, my dog starts barking and patrolling the house.

    Glad I discovered your channel because I've just started into turning my home into a smart home. Glad to see you have the Ecobee, which I got recently after we had a new furnace & AC installed. Also recently got the Rachio smart watering system. So far it's good but there's tuning I need to do with the sprinkler system & advance features in the Rachio I haven't utilized yet. I do have a Harmony One that has made controlling the media center easier for my partner. I've been wanting to get some smart lighting but not wanting to rewire anything or buy a hub. Considering I have a Harmony One & an Ecobee I've been trying to find reasonably priced wifi bulbs that'll work with one of them. Also automating the blinds would be awesome though not wanting to replace all our blinds. That would get expensive. Looking forward to watching your videos & learning more to make my home truly smart. Thanks!

    I use a Brultech GreenEyeMonitor to monitor my electricity usage by circuit (with individual CTs per circuit). It has been VERY useful in lowering my electricity bill, and keeping tabs on my many systems - especially when I'm out of town. It has 32 channels for monitoring, plus provisions for pulse counts (which I use for a water meter) and OneWire temp sensors (which I use for monitoring the HVAC in/out temp)

  • @SeniorWindsurfer
    @SeniorWindsurfer ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the detailed comparison of the water metering devices. These comments are based on an actual installation.
    The Flume CURRENTLY has additional advantages. (1) If you're a Los Angeles Dept of Water & Power customer, the device only costs ~$25 after installation rebates. (2) The is no charge for the detailed water use monitoring reports. I was also thankful that the Flume actually worked (as claimed) when there is a long distance between the flow sensor and the WiFi connecting relay link; at my house that is 115 feet. My only problem with the flume was installation; it took lots of digging to remove the dirt around my 60 year old water meter. 😊

    I agree that the robotic vacuums are worth the price. I found 3 at a thrift store and paid $10 each for them. Had to replace the batteries and do a board replacement on one of them. I have my own setup too. I agree with your list, but it is about what works for an individual.
    I have motion sensors that turn lights on when I come home and off after a few minutes as I like to keep my place dark.
    Those lights have smart bulbs so I can do the sunrise wakeup and for fun. It's a fun party favor to change light colors in the room.
    I had a robot vacuum, which works great, but I had several keep getting stuck under couches. I'll get one again once I get a new couch with my new place. They're awesome.
    I have a Sonos sound system, which is wireless and has good sound quality. You can build your own system for less, but then it's wired.
    I have Ring, Arlo, and a few other random cameras. In the future, I'm sticking with HomeKit devices. You can buildout your own system for cheaper and have more features, but the integration with my TV/projector beats having a bit more control.

I'm hoping you do a review of the available wired external cameras like you did for internal ones... and rank them on data privacy and usability. really disappointed with the direction of waze and I want to build up a system that is entirely locally controlled and stored!

    I have a motorised couch, love it. My only problem was, which it is't; early on, sitting fully reclined one day, the house phone rang and previously, "slam your legs down, get up and answer" now were were sat there and it took a real long moment to find the control and then wait for it to, oh so, slowly grind down so we could get up to answer the phone. First World Problems eh!!

    We leave all the curtains open since living on the 4th floor with each unit being 2 stories means privacy isn’t an issue. Considered making the windows auto open and tying that with the ecobee as a ventilator accessory to allow for climate control by drawing in outside air. We already have a fan at each window that kicks on when the temp is low outside to remind someone to manually open the window.

    I'd never think of having anything automated. The only "smart" thing I have in the entire house is the heating (or thermostat), i just can't imagine myself using my phone or voice, for something that i just stand up and do. Even though i don't think i will ever change my mind, unless i am incapable of moving, it is interesting to see how many things can be done. Thank you for the video.

      I was in the same boat a few years ago. I ended up finding a SmartThings hub on sale at a Sears that was closing for a price I couldn't refuse. Fast forward some time and most of my light switches and fans are all "Smart". I have contact sensors on most doors and windows, and have smart smoke detectors.
      Here are some examples I use automation for to make my life easier / better:
      In my kitchen I have 4 individual light switches to control different banks of lights. With the smart switches I can double tap up to turn all 4 on at once or double tap down for all 4 to turn off. This is a great time saver when I want all the lights on or off. There's also times were my hands are full and I cant turn the light off in passing, being able to ask Google to do it is really helpful. I also have lights on timers based on the sunset / sunrise so I don't have to turn them on and off every night.
      I have flood sensors all over my home. If one triggers I have a smart water valve turner that will shut off the water main to my home. This actually saved me from flooding my basement once when we had a backed up washtub in the basement. Without that and the notification of the leak the basement would have easily been flooded and almost everything ruined from water damage.
      For entryway lights if a door opens and its a certain time after sunset and a certain time before sunrise the lights will turn on allowing for easily entering the home late at night.
      If I have windows open and the HVAC is on for over 5 minutes, I have an alert generated saying that windows are open and to either close them or turn the HVAC off.
      Home Automation isn't for everyone but there are a lot of useful things you can do with it if you want without removing yourself from the equation

    Awesome review, thank you! If you were running new cabling in a home today, any big recommendations either high or low voltage besides CAT 6 for cameras? There's now a lot of wireless stuff that makes it unnecessary for smart home automation, so I'm torn on what I should hard wire other than that.

I've been wanting to do that but haven't been able to find how to do it. Is it a Tasmota command or setting that you can control with MQTT without turning on the light? Thanks in advance!

    Always awesome to see other peoples' setups! However, one thing I noticed you don't have is motion sensors. I found motion to be a huge improvement over switches/voice. You walk in the room, lights turn on - and of course to varying brightness depending on time of day. Turn off after a while when there's no motion detected. With some logic, you can also make it so when you turn the lights off manually (via voice, etc) the home automation system knows to pause the motion activation. Motion is also useful for other things, like security or just checking for occupancy for various other automations. Still, thank you for the overview of your home and experiences with different systems.

      I feel like having motion sensors for lighting in a hallway, basement, fridge etc makes sense, since you don't stay there for as long as the timer you could set for those lights. But I think you are not considering how challenging it might be to reliably determine if my office, bedroom etc is occupied.

      @@haltsmaul. I use motion sensors (Xiaomi aqara linked to HA via z2m) in my home office and various bedrooms and they work very well as long as they are pointed in the right direction (i.e in a way that includes my desk chair or bed). Where I do have trouble sometimes is in my bathroom. Having a shower can be an issue as the motion sensor is not able to see into the shower and the lights will turn off after some time unless I turn on "shower mode" in my HA instance, which I often forget to do.

      @@atvking535 maybe use a moisture sensor, with the probes in the bottom corner of the shower

      @@atvking535 I installed Aqara door sensors and increased the timeout for motion to 5 mins when the bathroom door is shut. The motion sensor reports every 10s, timeout handling is done in node-red. I also installed a flow meter to track shower usage which has the benefit that the light will not turn off (even w/o motion) if water is running. Kitchen and hallway are also motion controlled and work without problems. Just being able to walk around and not having to toggle switches is at the very top of my smart home convenience list. github.com/vogler/smart-home/

    I really like your content. I'm about to start finishing work (but I will modify some electrical stuff) on a new apartment (new apartment complex) and Home Automation seems like something I would love to do. I'm from Bulgaria, so Shelly is the product for me, as from what I see they are located here.
    But due to budget limitation Home automation will be rolled out in portions and in later stages. So I'm trying to think up what I need where in order to automate.
    Could make a video like "preparing your home for home automation"? Tips, like Thermostats need only power, Cameras can use only PoE, Your TV intermediate would benefit X number of UTP cables, how big your switch boxes need to be to put a Shelly inside, what kind of cabling do smart window blinds or curtain motors need.
    In Bulgaria it's mostly solid brick or concrete walls. Some put drywall, but in my apartment all walls will be solid, so I need to plan now or I'll have a bad time adding wires later.
    I was really interested how you wired and setup your door sensors. As I wish to setup something that lights up some night corridor lights when you get up at night.
    I'm slowly going through your back-catalog of videos about home automation, so probably most of the answers I seek are somewhere there, but it would be nice to have one place for this specific purpose.
