Cannot agree more, my personal favorite timing to visit is early September and left before Oktoberfest. (too many people, too expensive and too many tourists), for me, attend Oktoberfest once in my lifetime is enough... Sorry about this.

As a local: Don't go to Hofbräuhaus, but any other Bavarian restaurant.
It's a tourist trap, loud, expensive and the food quality is not really high.
You won't encounter any locals there and will be surrounded by tourists.
