  • “Jerulita Travel” welcomes you at the entrance to Siauliai (Shavel in Yiddish) the 4th large city of Lithuania. The name derives from the word Šaulys (Shaulys) that means an archer. In 1236 there was a famous battle between the archers of pagan Lithuanian tribe Zemaiciai (Samogitians) and the knights of the Livonian Order of Brothers of Sword. The Lithuanians have defeated this German Order. Another version comes from the name of village Saule near it the battle took place.
A significant Jewish community lived in Shavel until World War II. The peak of the Jewish population was at the beginning of the XX c - about 10,000 Jews, representing 58% of the population. Siauliai was an important center of trade and industry, including the Jewish business. A vivid example of the commercial success was the leather factory owned by Chaim Frenkel, the biggest in its time in the Russian Empire.
Daniel Gurevich, the guide of “Jerulita Travel” walks the streets of Siauliai, shows interesting sites, and talks about the Jewish and the general history of the city. At the end you will visit a unique place of the Catholic pilgrimage “The Hill of Crosses”, where you will find even some surprise.
