Adam Savage Explores a Military Surplus Store

  • Will and Norm meet up with Adam during one of the Behind the Myths tour stops, and the three visit a local military surplus store in Bakersfield, CA. Adam browses for finds that are best bought in person, and we all marvel at the store's collection of vintage vehicles.
    (In case you're wondering, our camera could only support two wireless mics, so Norm wasn't plugged in during this shoot! And yes, we got inside the tank! Adam wrote about it here: www.tested.com/...)

    Why do we get a 3:25 minute video of this when it's exactly the reason Tested is so great? I want to see Adam walk around a huge store full of weird things and hearing him talk about his fascination with them and maybe tell a story or two. I could easily watch 45 minutes of this, with just Adam and Norm.

    in America it is legal to own and drive a tank (as long as the tracks are rubber and the gun is deactivated) but other than that you could drive to the theater

      Normally they cut holes in the armor, not sure if that can be bypassed with a license or not. Also the legality of driving them on the road (in America) would probably be very dependent on the width, tonnage, and speed of the tank as well as the type of roads.

      thatgiant they're also that kind of store. for the most part. most of the tac gesr is overpriced as usual, but they carry more than just condor. always bought my boots from them, great knife selection that wasn't a rip off, flaslights, the whole shebang. not to mention surplus that was cheap as hell. got myself a ww2 arctic mask that would absolutely scare the shit out of anyone, and it was warm as hell and I could fit my sunglass on with it.

    depending on the tank. tanks can be street legal. But these tanks need to be build for civilan roads and they also you need of course some fancy paper work. but in the US you can buy ANYTHING with the right paper work.

      any tank is allowed to move on roads with rubberized pads (the one they are standing on has them) so if this tank has all the lights working they could drive it away. Limitations in this case would be to the driving license i would think (obviously you can't drive this thing with drivers license for a family sedan... at least it should be that way, but hey, it's America... everything is possible there...).

    Magazines. The things that go in guns that contain the rounds are called magazines, not clips.

    • @animalmother556x45
      @animalmother556x45 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not all guns. If the gun has an internal magazine (m1 Garand, Carcano, and most bolt action guns) it is fed with a clip

    • @Doc-Holliday1851
      @Doc-Holliday1851 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      animalmother556x45 But the clip does not go into the gun, which was my point. The clip is only there for storage and quick loading. There are zero guns that incorporate clips that have the clips go inside the gun.

    • @animalmother556x45
      @animalmother556x45 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      +Christian's Channel .....I just listed two of them....the M1 Garand and Carcano....the clip goes into the magazine and stays there until all ammo is fire. the M1 kicks it out the top, and Carcano drops it out the bottom.

      Haseeebo M1 garand( enbloc clip), Mosin nagant, enfield, Springfield, mauser and even the Egyptian hakim use charger clips. No they didn't use them interchangeably because clips were just speed loaders holding more than one round of ammunition and they were used to load the magazine of the weapon. It's like them saying pass me a speed loader so I can load my speed loader.

    The story on the sub from U571: It is from a Hollywood auction and was listed as being used in the movie. The owner bought it because the way it was listed, it was made to sound like it actually worked. It was described as a "two man sub", but when the guy got it delivered, it was a towable model for close-up shots, which had space inside for two scuba divers.

    The razzledazzle camo was also used against the optics for lining up shots. Not just torpedos. You would move two lenses to get an accurate shot. It was hard to do so with the camo. Like staring at an optical illusion and seeing it move.

    Only in America could you find a STORE that has tanks outside!
    Back in the 70's there was a big brouhaha in Toronto Canada about a scrap yard that supposedly had an operational Sherman Tank in their yard. There were numerous stories about the authorities getting search warrants to go in and try and find it...they never did.
    Then (I believe) the owner passed away and when they cleaned it out, lo and behold, there WAS a fully operational Sherman tank in there.....

      What else will blow your mind is when you learn that pretty much every single town in America has at least 1 ww2 era tank on display in one of its parks. Some places have artillery pieces even, all as war memorials

      Boredout454 The funny thing is, back in the 80's in Toronto there was one parked outside an armory that was supposed to be decommissioned....but a couple of guys filled it full of gas and took it for a spin lol.....

      Boredout454 it's not just a legend, I lived right by the armory and it was located at the Dufferin street ramp to the 401 highway. We saw the tread marks on the lawn where it was parked and marks on the sidewalk and pavement......

AND THE LACES ARE STILL UNDAMAGED!!!! though, I can't say the same for certain parts of the boots.

      Hmm, I feel like they're stuck on interviewer mode.
      It's pretty amazing that they've got Adam and Jamie on board. But in the episodes where Adam is on it, it really doesn't seem like they have anything to offer, and it feels more like an interview. That's why it always feels awkward possibly? It just feels like there's an experience and skill difference between Norm, Will, and Adam. I don't know how they could possibly resolve such an issue. Other than to get experience, and be as interesting as Adam is.

    2:27 That's a GSH-6 Helmet! Used by Russian pilots in the late 1960's.
    If you don't like the plastic details, such as the big plastic clamp and the light blue ring around the glass, look for a GSh-6M, which is almost identical, but the details are steel instead of plastic, and the hose is on the other side.
    Awesome helmet!

    mags not clips

  • @iansadowski636
    @iansadowski636 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s magazine, not clip. A clip is a strip of steel with ammunition rounds attached to it from the back, and the clip can be inserted into a magazine instead of having to load individual rounds hence taking longer. Clips were also used to just insert straight into a gun(older semiautomatic guns that didn’t use magazines).
