Lol the air conditioning for one day in this store would offset any environmental benefits of keeping all this junk out of the landfill but keep dreaming
The one here is called surplus city and there was an even cooler store in Los Alamos called the blackhole where the guy bought mostly surplus from los alamos labs which if you know anything about los alamos …! Ya!
What a cool shop! I can completely understand why you love it so much Gabe. The product signs were fantastic, I don’t think this is the kind of place you can just ‘pop’ into, you’d need to set aside some time to appreciate it. Thank you for sharing this and thank you also to owner and staff. Best wishes from England
It's like having a Radio Shack, Sears, and a thrift store under one roof. I constantly need parts, and I am tired of waiting for Ebay sellers to ship stuff. This store would be great to have.
I first visited AxMan about 1975 and it blew my 14 year old nerd mind. The descriptions are stuff of legend. And all the Vegas Circus-Circus hats are there and they even had gyroscopic guidance system for the X-15!My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message and I tell everyone about the coolest store in the world!
Some guy once came into the Oklahoma City subreddit asking where all the electronics surplus stores were and we were like "what the heck are you talking about?" He found out that day that the place he was coming from had kind of a unique thing. I wish we had one here too, buddy.
I'm 57 and my parents were surplus junkies. Some of my earliest memories are of picking through this store. That torpedo has been there that long. We used to do the circuit of Axman, Crazy Louies on lake street and then Banks in Mpls. My wife doesn't get it and thinks we were crazy.
YES! My favorite store in the Cities! Nothing quite like them. I learned how to solder years back by buying random green boards and various electronic components from Ax-Man. I know several teachers who love this store for obvious reasons. They have some wacky stuff but the giant bobblehead J.C. and the iron lung take the cake. I really love the signs the employees make for these items - some pretty clever and funny people work there. I try to stop here several times a year when I'm over Midway-way. :)
I really need to go back there. One of my greatest regrets in life is not buying the $10 dummy grenade. “I’ll never need it” said the fool, unaware of how much he truly did...
My old man was an amateur radio operator and he built his own radios... And I used to go with him all the time to get parts. The store is wonderful. Thanks for the lovely reminder of a place I need to visit soon! Great video!
I've been a customer since 1980! Love it! It's been awhile since I've been there but I see they still have the iron lung! LoL! The sign at 4:45 of a guy "riding the white horse" that is hanging on a bin full of vials is hilarious! That's half the fun of going there, reading all the kewl/funny signs!
Fantastic advocacy for my favorite local store! Thanks for sharing this gem with your community. Always great to see new opportunities for locally-owned businesses. 🎉
Slow down while scanning ( panning ) just in case we out here are interested in more than a colorful blur. But we love everything you do. ( south Florida )
I have lived in or around Saint Paul my entire life and love this store. I remember they used to have a radio station you could tune in when you are nearby not sure if they still do though.
I didn't know about the radio station! Not sure if that's still a thing. I remember Cloquet used to have a techno pirate station, which was the only thing that made the drive to Duluth tolerable 😂
I first shopped at axman in 1970 and went there at least once a week. Always something great there. I no longer live in the Twin Cities and am glad to hear that they are alive and well. A must see if you are in town.
My grandfather was a mortician and when I was younger we'd frequently go to the twin cities for supplies. One of our fun stops while we were there was Ax Man and of course White Castle. I'm very happy to see it's alive and well!! Can't wait to get back down there some time again.
Remember to stop by White Castle while your in town. There are a few to select from, or stop at all of them, if you have a week or two to spend in town.
I lived just 5 blocks away from this store in 1970 ! I would shovel people's sidewalks so I had money to go shopping at Axman's ! What a delight just to walk through that place.
Everything did indeed look like it had the potential to be VERY interesting! Sadly the entire shop sans when you stopped and showed the sign tags, and the single moment you stayed still on the old studio camera, was a complete (and very frustrating ) blur. A few static shots would tell a much more intricate story. This suggestion is given in the spirit of wanting to see more of what you are witnessing, because it truly does seem very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
I moved away from MN two years ago, and this place is the thing I miss the most by far. If I could've packed one of these up and brought it with me, I would have!!!
The original St. Paul location, I most recently have been to the St Louis Park store. I didn’t know there are three stores and I live here. I can testify Ax Man is a Twin Cities gem.
There was a store in Crystal, which is only about 3 miles from where I'm at now, but they closed that location the better part of a decade ago. If I'm not mistaken, the three locations now are the original St. Paul location, St. Louis Park, and a store in Fridley. Any one of them may work out as the best place to go for fresh ideas and to lose all the change in your pockets. Personally I suggest leaving the credit and debit cards at home, or you may just come home with a much tighter monthly budget for a while. They do accept most major credit cards, or did when I was last there, but not so much on checks.
Great tour, reminds me of stores back in the days or places like a harbour. I have a small surplus store that sells electronics, radio parts, antenna's fishing gear, camping and boating. Cool places to go in for one small part and come out with three new projects.

I go to Ax Man all the time. I've bought tons of stuff there that you can't find anywhere anymore. There used to be Crazy Louies down the street near Lexington, but they closed decades ago. There are not many places like this left around the USA anymore. There used to be an amazing electronics surplus store in Colorado Springs that I went to a lot, but they shut their doors a couple years ago.
I just went to Ax-Man for the first time last summer! I got really excited seeing this thumbnail as that store and you as a person seem like a match made in heaven!
Saw those inert bombs when you passed by them and thought "man that's the first thing I'd pick up if I were there". I could definitely use those on my plane as auxiliary ferry tanks.
I wish you all could have experienced Ax-Man in the 70's. It was a time when the Twin Cities had numerous electronic manufacturers and excess seemed to flow to the Ax-Man. I recall Honeywell, Remington-Rand, Burroughs and Control Data for a few. What was Control Data, you ask? More than electronics it seemed the Twin Cities was home to many other manufacturers too as I recall some of those items I purchased over the years. Some oddities for sure. It was a time of more military excess as well. Even people that aren't 'into' this kind of shopping can lose track of an hour in Ax-man poking around finding things they just must have. Thanks for the memories!
Wow!! It reminds us of the American Science & Surplus location near us, even down to the creativity of the signs and stuff! This place seems way more densely stocked though, I'm suuuuper jealous now, wow.
There used to be more surplus stores around the area. Minneapolis had Acme electronics. St. Paul had Crazy Louies ( near Ax-man ) - I think they took him away in a straight jacket they had in the store.🤣
Every time I lose a part I’ve been stashing, ax-man gains another product 😂 I would love to see more of these stores around the country! Can’t wait to visit!
Great vid! Looked like a normal thrift shop for like 10 seconds and then started getting awesome! Been loving the channel. Before I even saw a video here I knew I'd love the channel just by the name.
Wonderful video. St. Louis used to have Friedman's Railroad Salvage, which would be a sort of companion store to this. It specialized in stuff from railfreight (yes, it did fall or got dented on a train) and was more of a furniture, bedding and bulk grocery store with great deals on unlikely stuff. If you could have put this and Friedman's together, it would have been the ultimate closeout store.
There was a place in downtown Dayton, Ohio called Mendelson’s Liquidation Outlet. It was a multistory 100 year old warehouse. The 3rd floor was identical to this store. You could spend an entire week in there and not see 30% of everything.
It finally closed in early 2021. I say “finally” cause the threat of the store being sold was being made for years. Sadly Sandy Mendelson died a couple of months after the doors closed. Health issues. I do miss the store quite a bit.
Love the place, we go there often. It's a tinkerers paradise. My son used to go there with his boys, he would give them each five bucks and let them loose. They had a blast.
I have enjoyed cooking for years. Long ago I bought a mortar and pestle from another Ax Man location and is gets used often to grind herbs and spices. I never would have bought one if I hadn't found it snooping around the Ax Man in Fridley.
Wow, I think I'm in paradise at Ax-Man, what an amazing selection of great stuff! You're sure to find what you need for any DIY project. Thank you for taking us along, Ax-Man is exactly the kind of store I've always dreamed of. Seeing this, Ax-Man is doing something for the environment too. The items can be reused instead of being thrown away, which reduces waste and avoids the need for new production, saving CO2. It's actually a very intelligent system. 🥰🤗👍
I love that store. only been there a handful of times. when I was younger. But time's I'll never forget. My father has a saying, " If we don't have it , Ax-man does." I remember the dude on the wall with the parachute. I'm a military surplus nerd. Cheers from Faribault. You should do a sub meeting in the parking lot. I'll bring cold beverages and a grill and hot dogs. 😉🤣👍
You could prolly get a good video out of that bosch elect motor part sign at 6:10 along with the Ax-Man sign! Ax-Man art would prolly make great T-Shirts too. Thanks for the video!
What a fantastic store. You're very lucky it's there for you. Thanks for letting us know about it and for bringing their website and ebay store to our attention.
The closest thing we have here in Covington Louisiana is a store called HJ Smith and Sons. It's a hardware store and historical landmark with extra knickknacks. I've dropped a few hundred there in the last 6 months alone.
The closest thing we have near me to this is a small "hardware" store called Grandview Supply. In a small town not too far from me. Had everything from wheelbarrows to bumpers from a 60's Chevy.
Reminds me of the Mendelson's store in down town Dayton OH. They had a 6 or 7 story building that covered most of the city block, and then a building across the street too.. I am sad to see they went out of biz after 50 or so years...
I'm an alumnus and 40 year shopper, popped in today for a few things and they told me about this video. I'm a little hurt that none of my signs made it in, but I subscribed anyway ; )
There was a surplus store in Ohio called Glenn's Surplus Sales... my dad used to hit that store up when he had a project. There's also Electronic Surplus Inc. in the north, that is unfortunately mail-order only at this time.
I really really believe that these types of stores will come back at scale as a result of deglobalization, and our collective change to repurpose and recycle stuff. Great video.
Wow!!! So wish we had something like that here in the UK. Thank you for showing us around. Even better with the eBay link and they do ship across the pond.
I wish more stores like this still existed!!! These are good not only for creators, tinkerers, and makers, but really good for the planet too!
Lol the air conditioning for one day in this store would offset any environmental benefits of keeping all this junk out of the landfill but keep dreaming
Luckily, this location does not have air conditioning.
Here in Illinois we have a similar store called American Science and Surplus.

The items can be reused instead of being thrown away, which reduces waste and avoids the need for new production, saving CO2. It's actually a very intelligent system. 🥰🤗👍
Keewenaw brewing! 👌Thanks for the video.
i love stores like this. I knew I'd be a fan when you stepped through the door
Dude! You've gotta get that equipment on the top left of the first electronics shelf you record around 0:55 So many cool things you can do with that!
Awesome tour. Seems like and awesome store!
If anybody is around Chicagoland, American Science & Surplus is our equivalent and highly recommended.
Oh man, this store looks so cool ! Thanks for the video !
I grew up going here. Haven't been there in years. I need to stop in next time I am in St. Paul!
The closest thing we have near me to this is a small "hardware" store called Grandview Supply. In a small town not too far from me. Had everything from wheelbarrows to bumpers from a 60's Chevy.
There is a place like that near Orlando FL. It's called Skycraft Surplus. It's old location had a Flying saucer over the entrance.
Reminds me of the Mendelson's store in down town Dayton OH. They had a 6 or 7 story building that covered most of the city block, and then a building across the street too.. I am sad to see they went out of biz after 50 or so years...
went to the Saint Louis Park location this saturday. Always a great trip for my crafting
It is a darn good thing I don't live close enough to visit this store!! I would be more broke than I am already. Wow..
I'm an alumnus and 40 year shopper, popped in today for a few things and they told me about this video. I'm a little hurt that none of my signs made it in, but I subscribed anyway ; )
Way cool!!

Building 19 in Massachusetts was similar to this store. It was a chain that closed about 15-20 years ago.
This place reminds me of American Science & Surplus back in Milwaukee, Wi. I will def have to check this place out as soon as I can.
4:45,Was that John Delorean riding a white horse? That's funny, that's exactly what those bottles were for.
We had a store like this years ago in Columbia, Mo.
You might as well spend several hours in there at least a few times a year.
the metric units sign at 6:02 is incredible lol. the whole store is incredible. i don't know if we have stores like that. i have to find one
Agreed. Ax-Man is the coolest store In the galaxy! It is maker/tinkerer/hobbyist heaven and we're lucky to have them in the Twin Cities.
Wow!!! So wish we had something like that here in the UK. Thank you for showing us around. Even better with the eBay link and they do ship across the pond.
Good find. Thx for the vid and great commentary.
