What a tremendous State if Mind! Matt needs his own show! And to you, God's has work for you.. even as Sonny, you are an example to those who suffer with mental illness. They can overcome, just like you, even though you have setbacks. 👏👏👏👏

Yes you have to have faith. I'm a 3 time cancer survivor. Colon and liver twice. But I had faith the Lord will cure me and he did and I've been cancer free going on 17 years. I trusted the Lord to keep me cancer free and he did❤️🙏

Hi Maurice/Sonny; My heart aches for you b/c of the recent loss of two friends in your Life. 😢❤ You know what, I truly believe your friend’s Lives in this Life Journey was impacted by you. B/c I have alot of respect and admiration of you. Even though I never met you, I feel as if I know you through your Podcast. My Hats off to you and your beautiful wife, Paula. Hey I have something in common with your wife, my names Paula too!! I’m 62, conquered Breast CA, am fighting every day with Multiple Sclerosis, loss of friends due to my illness; family members not understanding my disease and everything that goes along with it. My mental health also gets affected but I ALWAYS rely upon GOD. My Faith has gotten me through many challenges and even now.

Sometimes a person can have people who DO love them and ARE there for them and STILL lose them to suicide. It's such an internal struggle. The hardest part to understand is that you can do everything in your power to help someone who's struggling. But at the end of that, only the person struggling can find their way out of that dark place. Because sometimes when you're there, you push people away, especially those you love and who love you. Because you don't want your pain to touch them. It's so hard and so complicated. There are no easy answers.

    • @Karina-uf3bl
      @Karina-uf3bl 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

I think your point is a really important one. We can love the suffering person more than anything and they can know we would do anything for them to help them heal. But the decision is ultimately up to them. I think it is a grave disservice to the families and friends of those who have committed suicide to paint it all with the same brush by saying that person was "all alone" and had no one.

@@Karina-uf3blthank you for saying that. I lost an older brother and almost lost my younger one both to suicide. Both deeply loved and supported by my family. The younger one is now in therapy, thank God. He lives in Florida and I'm in California which makes it hard because of the distance. But we talk on the phone when he's in the headspace to talk. I don't push but I do make it very clear that I love him, I have his back and support him fully in his recovery. But ultimately, he understands that his recovery is up to him to work on every single day.

Exactly true because I too have experienced this with an individual. So basically it comes down to the will of a person. They have to really want a different way of life.

When Matt Cohen and you said that there is chaos everywhere, this is so true. When he mentioned Billy Miller and Tyler Christopher it brought tears to my eyes. Over 34 years ago I tried to take my life. Now that I’m 67 I try to be more positive and with the help of my children and State of Mind and my faith in God l try to look at certain situations differently. We can definitely learn from each other and try not to judge one another because at the end of the day we do not know what someone is going through. Much love to you Maurice and your family and guests. 🥰🇨🇦🇮🇹🤗

After listening to this conversation, and speaking about Tyler and Billy, they may not have known how to accept help or how to receive love from friends and family. Something you may not know as well, there are not enough people in the healthcare field. I work in the Medicare field for 18 states, and there is not enough people in the mental health field. Also insurance is another problem. No one can afford it. I struggle every single day. I’m bi-polar adhd severe anxiety and depression and nervous ticks. And I’m 44 yrs old. It’s not easy , but I have to keep going for my family. I wish you all the best. Keep going.

I’m so sorry for your loss Maurice. I’m 60 as well. I haven’t had that kind of loss but I know at our age, more and more loss is inevitable. Just being born in 63 like I was helps me in listening to you. I’ve recently gone on anxiety meds and it’s made such a difference in my life. Thank you for being here for those of us who struggle with mental health and for being a role model for those born in 1963.

This is SUCH AN IMPORTANT DISCUSSION!! I suffer from Chronic Depression, Severe Anxiety, and lately a lot of ANGER. MY Sister is Bipolar, and I know it runs in families!
I have a friend who does Podcasts here in Utah, and She is Amazing. Her Sister died by Suicide many years ago I STRONGLY BELIEVE, that if you have Faith and a Higher Power, or whatever, YOU NEED TO HOLD ON TO THAT!
My friend, I mentioned, speaks around the Country. She says “please stay in your body! You are NEEDED!”
Oh, and I’m on Antidepressants. And it’s OKAY! There is NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS!!
    So I’m here to say,
“PLEASE STAY IN YOUR BODY!” You are NEEDED!
I can’t say I haven’t thought I DIDN’T want to be here, at times, but C’mon! We need to BE HERE WE HAVE WORTH! ❤

Never cared for the "Griffin Monroe" character on GH as I felt he was weak, sympathetic, and condescending. Just proves that Matt is a true actor for making us believe he is anything but. :) Thanks for having yet another "Hero" on your program Mo. This episode ROCKED.

Matt Cohen, I could listen to you all day! You are an incredible young man. To be honest, I watch ‘State of Mind’ because I have watched GH since the late 60’s and because I can watch all the actors who in some ways feel like friends after all of these years. (Yes…I’m old-ish and life is good, by the way). The bonus for me for watching this show is listening to people like you and Maurice and the list goes on and on. Wow! The content on this show is so good and you are remarkable! By the way, I am a strong proponent of gratitude, and any chance I get, I talk about it and share the benefits of being grateful with as many people as I can. Thank you for being you! And thank you, Maurice, for creating this platform. I get the feeling that having these chats is beneficial to your well-being, which I love! Likewise, I learn something during each podcast and again, thank you!

Loved Matt in Supernatural❤. My sister-in-law committed suicide 15 years ago, she was 29 years old. My brother never remarried and I don’t believe ever recovered because he feels he should have known she was suffering but she was always sweet, fun and playful and was full of life. I feel like he’s punishing himself for not knowing, my heart breaks for him. I’m hoping I can get him to watch your videos, I believe they will help him so thank you for doing these videos.

Maurice and Matt, this topic is so delicate, it happens a lot . I might be wrong i don't know but i think that anyone who's going thru a really tough time should find someone professional to talk too . I know it's expensive and many people cannot afford a theraphy session but it'a very important, i don't have a professional therapist but i do vent out when i'm going thru a hard time with one of my cousins she lives in my hometown brazil ..
Maurice and Matt i'm sorry for your loss ..
P.S i'm bipolar and i have few health issues and i deal with a lot daily and i deal with depression too ..

Thank you for discussing suicide. One of my best friends from high school took her own life at age 25. I was shocked and confused. Felt guilty as I had not talked with her much during that time. If only I’d kept in touch. You think you could have made a difference. Sadness comes over me when I think
about her. Since then I now check in with family and friends to
see how they are doing. I wish I had talked with her about God. Now I pray for others and try to be there for them. Faith in the one true God.

This was a beautiful honest raw talk. Therapy is still taboo. Suicide is complicated and layered. I've heard there is a point where you can't feel the love and affection people have for you anymore. How do we reach out before ending it all seems like the only choice left. Dr. Phil once said depression is a disease of the brain. You and Matt using you're words and experiences means everything and matters so much. Keep telling you're stories. It does give others the strength and courage to do the same or even admit they aren't okay.

Matt's talk reminded me of seeing Jack Canfield on Super Soul Sunday - he wrote Chicken Soup for the Soul - they were talking about Journaling & he said he'd started one entitled
    "Where Could I have been..."
It was to basically ground you, where could I have been more courageous, empathetic or... during the day. I think that speaks to the "community" theme that Matt was getting at because
"United we stand, divided we fall."
I agree about alcohol, I had an uncle who drank and told me (with a stutter, he had when he drank)
    "Niece always remember a drunk ain't 💩!"
    I did/have 😊
Good show Maurice & Paula, I love Matt & his character on GH was refreshing - that storyline of him being a fish outta water in Port Charles - esp its conclusion was awesome, miss him on the show.
    Namaste 🙏🏼

I read Maurice Bernard’s book and now listen to the audiobook. If anyone has not read or listened to this book they should where they have mental illness or not. No wonder it got New York best selling book.❤

OMG I hope your boxing/men/mental health video or podcast or whatever it becomes/is works out soon and well. As a mother of a 21 yr old son who lost his father in September 2023 and who has had to deal with helping caregive for his dad as well as deal with his own issues, I worry about him so much. I would love to see something like this grow and come to the San Joaquin valley and throughout California.
Our mental health system is crap, but it's even worse for men. Especially men of color. I have my own MH issues and have had difficulty getting help, though I know my privilege has helped me out because it's more acceptable for women to be emotionally vulnerable.
This whole show was amazing and I'm really happy to have stumbled upon it. Please keep doing what you're doing. You're making a difference.

Thank you for this episode it was sooooo good! I could have listened to Matt talk all day. What you both talked about is so important and it will help so many people. My heart broke all over again when you were talking about Tyler and Billy. I still cant believe they are both gone. So incredibly tragic. I think Matt should do a mental health or self help podcast. He has so much wisdom just like you do. He could do such great things just like you are doing. Thank you so much ❤❤

Good show! Cohen looks a lot like my uncle Wally, who was a lawyer and a priest. Helping others is what it's all about. What a very nice person he seems to be.

Thank you Maurice for another great healing interview! I love State of Mind and love watching you on GH. I just wanted to let you know whatever mics you're using in the studio are sounding unclear. Especially when someone is speaking in a loud voice. The mics you used in your old set up sounded much clearer to me. Thanks again for you excellent content. 💝

I think it would be cool for both of you to go to high schools and talk to the kids about mental health and pros and cons and to say what you guys been through and tell them to get help, talk to someone or everyone what they're going through ❤
