Diablo Immortal has finally released in the majority of the gaming world and surprisingly being a mobile game is filled with microtransactions. However it seems some of these transactions don't appear to be as micro as you would think. Thanks for watching!

Yeah whenever I considered dropping some cash on the gachas I play I would look at the pack prices and be immediately dissuaded. It's not that I can't afford it (which is one of the frequent responses from dumb whales, "haha you poor"), it's just that I compare how many HUNDREDS, perhaps THOUSANDS of hours I could get for spending that same money on a Steam sale rather than buy a bit of premium currency that may or may not get me ONE character in ONE game that will probably be out of meta by next update anyway (or that was never meta to begin with). That's ACTUAL VALUE being put against a CHANCE to momentarily boost your ego, and that's something no one in their right mind would even compare (and yes, I know there are compulsive spenders, I'm not talking about them - I wish for them to get all the psychological help they require).

Also, look at the predatory pricing when you buy orbs, for example: to buy 2 legendary crests, you'll need 320 orbs. Notice how you can buy 300 orbs and get "15 extra"? It's _juuuust_ not enough to buy 2 crests, forcing you to either go for a more expensive option or get an additional 60 orb pack, leaving you with the 55 orbs wasted. The same happens when you want to get 4 crests and need 640 orbs - one purchase for $14 is only worth 630. Only when spending at least $35, you get a little bit more than a multiple of 160.

Blizzard knew that this would tank their reputation with their fans even more. This was intended to expand their audience to chinese mobile gamers, aka the highest population of whales in the world. And it is incredibly well done. The base game is good, and the microtransactions are very effectively predatory and the heights of what can be spent on the game are astronomical. This will be Blizzard's most profitable game ever.

    • @tjenadonn6158
      @tjenadonn6158 2 ปีที่แล้ว +330

That's the worst part: as far as Blizzard is concerned this will be a massive success. Good games are bad for business, and if you want to make as much money as possible as efficiently as possible this is the way to do it. People forget that the third prong of the Activision-Blizzard fork is King Games, the mobile games studio behind economic powerhouses like Candy Crush Saga. In many ways King is the cash cow that carries the entire company, and their products have achieved a level of market saturation typically reserved for brands like Coca Cola or McDonalds. Inevitably the decision makers at Blizzard would see what they're doing, making billions of dollars and claiming massive marketshare for minimal effort, and want on to that infinite money train regardless of how many sacred cows would have to be sent to the abbatoir in order to pay for the ticket. If you approach games from the perspective of an accountant or an investor rather than a gamer or game developer, purely as a product to be used for generating profit no different from grain or gravel, it would be stupid not to.
Remember kids: corporations are never your friends, they're never on your side, and they will never care about you. If you love something the artists on their payroll produce that's fine, but don't fall in love with the publishers that exploit said artists, and don't mistake the former for the latter.

Think about this for a second: if just 10 people play the game and pay the full amount to fully spec their character, assuming that the numbers are correct, $110K from just 10 people, that's already over a million dollars in Activision Blizzard's pockets. But that is just 10 players. Now imagine hundreds of players. A hundred thousand players. A million players. Half a billion players even. That means ActiBlizz has already won and while a small minority of players will basically ignore the game and not pay a cent for anything in it, there are others that wont care. We've already lost before we began.

The real secret is that Bliz have been worse than EA for a decade.
Diablo 3 releasing with massively reduced drop rates to force people into the RWT marketplace, claiming that it is impossible to raise drop rates to make the game fun.
Upon removal of the market they raised the drop rates and suddenly the game was actually fun.
Overwatch is the game that brought lootboxes from a mobile/TF2 only idea and made it a mainstream feature of many AAA games since
WoW has been chucking in ridiculous additional paid content that angers the fans for over 15 years
Hearthstone is a cut down, gutted version of the WoW TCG but with MUCH lower drop rates than the real card game, making Hearthstone somehow significantly more expensive than collecting physical cards
Blizzard have been a deep evil in this industry for a long, long time. Especially since they became Activision Blizzard. Never forget that Activision were the most evil force in the gaming industry over the 2000's, far worse than EA could ever hope to be.
And this is before we talk about how they treat their staff. EA are terrible to the consumer but mostly good to their employees.
Bliz hates the consumers and their own employees.
I hate EA as much as the next guy but I have been vehemently against Blizzard for a decade. The proof that they would do something like this has been in everyone's face for years.

When a 5/5 star gem awakens, it gains an additional five slots around it, which allows an additional five legendary gems to be slotted into it, which have to be individually upgraded again to rank 10. If you’re to be lucky and average around $15,000 per 5/5 star gem, for 36 gems, that alone would tally up to $540,000.”

While it is easy to think it's pay to win, every unlockable character, weapon, and several colours and cosmetics are unlockable through gameplay. So you could also farm the platinum required to buy the items you can't or simply don't want to grind for.

Also the pity system doesn't give you a 5/5 Star gem. It gives you any */5 Star gem. So again, even the pity system wont help you much because 99% of the time, the pity system will give you a 2/5 Star gem. Quin spent over 8,000 USD and his highest is a 3/5. He's not even close to maxing out. He doesn't even have a single 5/5 Star gem yet.

That's very bad even for a gacha game.
But they'll probably fix the pity it down the line when people complain about it enough. But by then they already raked in millions from whales and krakens full of FOMO trying to outfit themselves in full 5 start gear. Then they'll release better gear that outclasses the current set of 5 star gear and the cycle continues.
PS: A key rule for any new gacha game is don't go hard in the beginning. Reroll on something decent and stick with it until the game is better understood and metas start to set in. That's because beginner gear or units get outclassed very fast by new banners and it's better to save the tons of free stuff you get on the better things.

There's even another micro transaction that doesn't show up till you hit paragon, it's for when you get your legendary gems to lvl 10 you can unlock more power from it, but getting it to 5 already takes like 45 gems to sacrifice, so to get one gem to 10 and them do the unlock on it you're probably looking at 150-250 legendary gems to get a single gem to lvl 10

The bad thing is in this kind of case it is worse because it grow from the other side of the fence, slowly pushing the limits and disfiguring the extent of legality and intent, and take 100% use in the fact it is actually legal from the bottom going upward.

This is evil even by the standards of mobile games. One I'm playing now is $3 a draw if you use real-world money, with three hundred draws being what it takes to get the featured character by pity. It takes four copies to max out a character's level, which means that in the _absolute_ worst case scenario, you spend $3600 - and to get to $100k _in a year_ , you'd have to insist on drawing every featured gacha until you get the feature _and_ have have the worst luck in human history( _and_ be a spendthrift in the premium item shop).

There's a surprising amount of decent mobile games where the monetization is fair or even absent, for those who can find them. Diablo Immortal is not one of them.
As a rule of thumb, if the app/play store suggests it, it's 99% trash. Almost everything worth checking is buried under bazillions of trash apps. Why? Neither Apple nor Google are your friend. If you get a good fun game for a buck or even free, you'll be too entertained to care about the ad-riddled MTX games they want you to play.

The funniest thing about winning at a casino is cashing out. There was always a pretty young girl sitting behind bulletproof glass reading a book. She always looked a little surprised that someone walked up. I never saw another person. There was never a line. I never walked past a player walking out. It's the loneliest place in the casino.
