I’m sorry but you shouldn’t have a all seed diet! You should include 80% pallets 10% seeds and 10% fruit and vegetables for your birds to be healthy!
Veggie's shouldn't be grouped with fruit, budgies need mostly a veggie, lettuce, and sprouts diet. Pellets are only ok if they don't have added dyes (food coloring), preservatives, and other chemical or synthetic ingredients(such ingredients can do internal damage long term). But agreed, seeds should be a minimal part of the diet. For a good seed brand though, for birds that are difficult to switch to a healthier diet, the seeds shown(Higgins Vita Seed) looks really good, since they don't have added preservatives and are more natural. :)

A little advice to you, don’t feed your bird mainly seed. They need mainly veggies and grain for a good diet. Seeds and fruits should be treats. About 75% of their diet should be veggies. The about 25% should be seed. Many people mistake this, but it is actually important. This goes for cockatiels, by the way.

Exactly. I’d feed pellets. Rhoudy bush is a great food. fruits and veggies obviously. And seeds as a treat. Just a seed diet is horrible for birds. I rescued a 5 year old cockatiel today and she was on a seed diet and she has liver disease.
I’m going to start converting her when she starts getting comfortable at where she’s at.
It’s good to make chop and freeze it and use what is necessary. And feed it as an everyday food.
You can put anything you want in there, fruits, veggies, eggs, I’d also add oatmeal in there though so it can soak up all the water.
But never just seed. I know they love it but there are so many consequences

I hesitated watching the video when I saw nothing but bags of seed posted on the video photo. Most advice given was ok, although her nutrition advice was poor at best, with the exception that Lafeber's NutraBerries were mentioned.
Cockatiels are supposed to get a little more seed that many other hookbills, although a cockatiel diet which consists of mostly seed is dangerously unhealthy. My feathered kid's DVM has suggested a 30-40% serving of seeds per day, with the rest of their diet (60-70%) to contain pellets and a large variety of fresh food!
*The trick is to not put seeds into their main dish! And forget Sunflower Seed, for the most part!*
My little ones have dishes special for seed mixes (preferably Lafeber's AviCakes or NutraBerries) and/or fresh food on the side, such as fresh eggs (which can be cooked with millet and veggies), organic veggies and fruit, organic flaxseed bread or organic oat bread, organic Cheerios or org Fruitloops (made with real fruit juice), and/or etc. *With a well balanced diet, most healthy Tiels DO NOT need a vitamin supplement, especially if the sweeties are fed pellets and the recommended amount of produce.*
⚠️ *Also, sunflower seed should only be fed sparingly or rarely to a domesticated parrot, because of it's high fat count and it's potential to deplete their diet of much needed nutrients, such as vitamin A. In fact, Tiels who are obese or who have issues with their liver should never be fed Sunflower Seeds.* 😕

You seem to know a lot about birds...please consider making videos...I would gladly join your channel...I have a cockatiel...he is weird lol...he refuses to "Step up" when he is in his home (cage) he doesn't like to come out of his home...I use a perch to take him out...then he will step up...lol...he is store bought...it took me 3weeks to get him to come to me...I'm still working with him...I know I need to be patient....what other tricks should I teach him??? What is your Tiel's name?
If you didn't get him very long ago, then it's going to take a little while before he feels fully adjusted, even if he's hand raised. Although, being hand-raised can make a big difference. Was he hand raised? In other words, was he hand-fed and handled by a human when he was just a hatchling? If he was not, then his fear of large creepy hands will be more intense.
I believe that it is particularly scary for them at first, because of our size and our hands are very strange to them, especially since they don't have any themselves. Hands can seem alien and frightening to a new bird, who probably sees the world a lot like a small human child. I can imagine that to a smaller bird, they probably look like tentacles from a hungry and otherworldly monster....lol...🧟
Anyhow's, it does sound like you're doing everything good, so far. Does the little fella bite?
If he doesn't bite, then you're still going to want to take it slow with him anyways.
Offer him treats by hand, so that he can get used to your hands. If he bites, you can wear gardening gloves...until he gets used to your hands, more so.
You can try teaching him tricks, but it might be good not to force too much on him, just yet. Let him get used to your scary hands and tentacle fingers first.
I would wait and see before you get a companion for him. If you're going to want him to get used to you, you're going to want his focus to be on getting attention from you, at least for the most part. Also, keep in mind, that another bird will be another individual that you will have to also train and adjust your life around to, on top of continuing to care for and train the one you have now.
If you eventually get him a female, keep in mind that female parrots can be trickier to take care of. A parrot's diet is crucial and females require a specific type of diet. Unfortunately, a lot of parrots, especially cockatiels, are malnourished in pet shops. Most pet shops and a lot of shelters don't feed them the right thing.
I always ask a pet shop or shelter what they feed their birds, if I'm looking to get a bird from them. As of now, pet shops specifically always wind up saying that the food that they feed their birds are some sort of awful seed mix and a couple of veggies or fruits here and there (not every day).
Wynnie, my female Tiel was especially malnourished and unfortunately, I had to do a lot to change the way she was used to eating, because what she got at the pet shop had made her completely hormonally imbalanced.
I did take her to a vet a few days after I got her and her doctor and I both agreed that her diet at the store was not sufficient, even though her overall health seemed healthy. However, after about 3 months of me adopting her, she started to lay eggs and kept laying eggs for way too long. She was my first female, so after a few weeks I became a little worried, especially after when she laid about 10 and kept going to over a dozen and so on.... They're only supposed to lay 4 to 6 at a time, every other day...
Nevertheless, even though I had begun to feed her a more well-balanced diet when I first adopted her, I add to adjust her diet, again.
After more than two dozen eggs, I finally got her to stop, but only temporarily. I messed up a little bit at that point by getting lazy and feeding her some junk food, namely a little bit of millet spray everyday (Ifigured that a little bit won't hurt her and would just be a part of her daily seed intake...) She then proceeded to lay more than a dozen again.
I had to go out and buy more fresh vegetables, organic whole grain cereal (and organic oat bread), a couple of specific brands of Lafeber's nutri berries and forced myself to prepare and even cook Wynnie and Sebastion meals just like as if they were human kids. I have decided to stop giving them both a little chunk of fresh millet spray, on a daily basis and now only feed it to them very infrequently. Every morning they get a breakfast, with some Nutri berry seeds in a separate dish from their daily pellets.
With a heck of a lot of patience, vigilance over what Wynnie ate, and hard work, she finally stopped laying a several months ago. (I adopted the little girl last year...)
I did not put Wynnie with Sebastion in the same cage for around three months after adopting her.
At the moment, they still have their own cages, but they are more willing to hang out together now, especially since they're out almost every single day. Since Sebastion's cage is a little bigger then Wynnie's, she tends to prefer to hang out on and in there, with him. Sebastion is a social animal by nature, but is an introvert as an individual, so as soon as I noticed that Sebastion gets irritated and wants his space back to himself, I know that it's time to put Wynnie back to her own cage area, especially for when it's sleepy times.

Covid19 lockdown thing has helped me to stay home and pay better attention to my little ones...🙃 I have considered submitting some videos toward my humble channel, which only has 2 subscribers at the moment..lol..but then again, like mostly everyone else, I only started my channel up so that that I could make comments and stuff.

they like a lot of different perches so i only got them 2 they also really like lots of toys so i got them two very small one they also will need a varied diet so i only give seed mix

They should have more than two cages with varied sizes, wood perches not plastic, and a cement perch. They should have 3/4 or more toys in their cage. This will keep them healthy. Just suggesting though
First, you have seeds! in the cage! 2, you have a dowel! 3 you have clear cups witch collect bacteria!
I'm trying my hardest to prove to my mom that I can be responsible with a bird! I know how well to keep the diets and feeding, spacing out with perches, cages, toys and foods and water. Stuff like that, thank you!

You should take out the mirrors! Your bird can either get very aggressive or get really attached with it and they can try to mate with it!

I really love this video! So much information! The only criticism I can have happens to be the music, while it is very enjoyable on its own, it irritates my sensory issues by confusing my auditory senses... this makes it super hard for me to get information out of the video because I can’t focus on it ._. Try lowering the volume on the music or even getting a softer, or slower music track :)

You should probably do checkups, not seeing a vet and having an old bird isn't necessarily something to boast about.
A well taken care of cockatiel can live to 32 years old.... I don't think boasting about your poor choices is that great.

I have some questions and a bit of advice for you.. do they always make that much noise? Now some that I know the answer to.. Should they rlly have a mirror, they trigger hormonal behaviour? Should they have a seed diet? The answer is no. Now, one more thing.. you should replace your plastic feeders with metal ones, it's more sanitary. I was hoping for an educational video but this only shows what NOT to do. I recommend you check out the channel live laugh birds she has alot of very useful info. Another extremely useful channel is bird tricks.
Birds can be quite noisy! Thanks for sharing information about bird care. There are definitely several different approaches to things, and having a different approach doesn't necessarily mean that it's wrong. I definitely enjoy both of the channels that you mentioned.
@@TheCockatielCorner ok but my point is still valid, seeds are very high in fat and have no nutritional value of any kind and a ' different approach' does not necessarily mean it's good especially when you are pretty much giving that bird a death sentence with so much fat and I didn't see ant veggies in the cage (I'm not trying to be rude or anything and you may have given them veggies earlier in the day but I still think that some of these tips (in my opinion, and many others opinions) are very unhealthy for your precious birds) I'm sorry if you find this offensive or anything I don't mean it in that way
@@randomperson7107 with all due respect, there is nutritional value in seeds, and if you think about it, birds in the wild have a diet that is high in seeds. The diet comes approved by my vet, and the birds do get fresh foods to supplement the seeds as well. I could definitely do a better job of including that in videos, because it would be good for new parrot owners to understand that it's an integral part of a bird diet.

I'm going to get a large "flight" cage for my cockatiel but only for when I can't monitor it i.e. asleep, out of the house, sewing, or whatever, esp because of my chi puppy and my mum's mouser cat... As Marlene Mc'cohen says "ENGAGED, NOT CAGED.'. I truly agree with her on that....
Cockatiels are perfect for me I am a cockatiel actually I’m curious loves snuggles active and gives a lot of attention to my four dogs and they love birds they are so calm with birds because when we got our first bird we introduced it to any of our other pets and let them talk a bit then play with the bird then showed it all the rooms and then let our hearts melt

hi again... im just wondering... should my routine go.. uncover cage, take cockatiel out, change lining, refill water/food, play, and so on and so forth? or is there anything else? (and clean the cage every month, give them different berries they can have and or like.. every week, wash dishes toys and perches every week?)

I know this video is old, but i want to ask. Does the age of a cockatiel for taming matter? Because a week ago i have bought a reallu young cockatiel, honestly its a baby, week pasted and i have started to interact with it daily, but he continues to run away and hiss at the hand, i have let him out few times for to see what would he do and to see would my older cockatiel interact with him, which thankfully they seem to be get along fine. tho idk if this indicates its young or not, but the new one appears not to know how to fly properly yet. (I did bought him from the store). So i was like thinking, perhaps he needs to get older to gain trust of me and allows me to approach him with hand? The older one allowed me to approch him with hand in like 4-5 days, which people told me its very surprising, i guess it was a lucky pick.
Well me and my cockatiel had an amazing realationship, but something happend. Everytime i try to tame him, he either bites or susses me or just runs away. What should i do with him.

Yes, when avian experts say to do 1 thing, and an un educated bird owner says to do another. Let us all listen to the person who is going with what is cheap and easy. **Eyeroll** She has much larger cages available for these birds, but chooses not to use them, cause they are and I quote her own words " I still have it, but it was a monster to clean, so I went back to Prevue Hendryx cages which are easier to take care of!" She would rather go with a confined space, with mixed birds. Budgies are known for being very aggressive to other birds during mating season. I feel bad for that cockatiel There is a reason vets suggest a pellet diet for parrots now days. It is called Fatty Liver Disease, when your parrot is on an all seed diet.
Like I said, there are way better TH-cam channels when it comes to parrot information. You can also really see how much they care for their parrots over this lady. Check out Live Laugh Birds, and BirdTricks TH-cam channels sometime. Then come back here and tell me this lady knows anything about cockatiels, and should be giving anyone advice about them......
I have some big trees in my backyard, if I wash the fallen branches could I put them in the cage for my bird? ( if I get one) One of my great aunts did this for her cockatiel, which just flew to her on day.

I use teil pettlets....and fruits and veggies ..my one teil is fussy was from 8 week s old, i have 2 teils ..Meikco and Pikachu .. And i also use mixed teil seeds ..

Sorry, but you shouldn’t really be giving any bird a mirror due to them getting aggressive and hormonal around you and the mirror
that only mainly happens if they are alone. Mirrors are still safe. you just cant keep them in there all the time.
From my understanding, parakeets shouldn't be housed with cockatiels because they can become aggressive towards them. Also you should use either glass or metal containers for food and water, it's safe and east to clean.
i bought an untamed cockatiel from a pet store and its been a month after i got him, today i let him out of his cage but now he refuses to get back in and also refuses me to come near him he goes into like attack mode and hisses at me and bites me ... he is very angry what should i do??
Thank you for the video! Ignore all the hating comments because your videos are the best! Just a recommendation: please don’t always feed your bird seeds because it is very unhealthy. Try to give them some vegetables and fruits. Again, thanks for the video, it really helped a lot!
You really think this video was the best? I highly suggest you watch parrot videos from Live Laugh Birds, and BirdTricks channels. Then come back here and tell me this lady knows what she is talking about. All she has done is ignore all the comments that are trying to help her give her birds a longer, happier, healthier life. If she took the time to read over the comments and redo this video full of bad advice, keep the good advice she did give, and re posted it, it would really show she cares about her birds. Instead this is still here, giving the internet yet more incorrect parrot information. You really think that tiny cage she has those 3 birds in is healthy? You do know budgies get aggressive to other birds during mating season right? I can only imagine what that poor cockatiel looks like after most of its feathers are plucked at.
Parrots also need a way different diet than this lady is telling you to do. I do enjoy her feeble attempted to splice in the oh yea also vegetables and fruits comment. Did you know a cockatiel should be on 60-70% of their diet as a healthy organic pellet? That free feeding sunflower seeds all day to a cockatiel will result in them dying at a much younger age? She didn't seem to point that out at all did she? But yes, ignore all the "hating comments" There is a reason people are trying to post correct info into these un educated videos. Adding supplements to a parrots diet can poison them. Then again her diet is so crappy it is needed by her. A parrot on a proper diet will be poisoned by supplements added to their diet.
Feel free to do your own research on a cockatiels proper diet, care, cage size, daily requirements. From avian vet sites. For some reason it wont match her info...

I would hesitate to say that this is okay, since birds that young need a lot of very specialized individual care. Unless you're a very experienced bird keeper, I would wait for that bird to get older and fully weaned.

winter raids if its your first time owning a bird get a cockatiel, Parrots like African greys can be difficult to handle they require a lot of attention. Start easy and work your way up, after gaining experience.

I recently bought a cockatiel from a family they had never worked with it and didn't know it's age, but it's quite scared and tries attacking if you get clise. So basically I was wondering how long it would take to train him and if it would be possible and if it's not to late.
DabN Chez it’s never too late, you just have to take it very slow. Start by simply sitting next to his cage and softly talking to him, don’t try to invade his space. Then you can start dropping a treat in his bowl after a week of two so that he knows that good things come from you. The key is gradual interaction increase.

It's good to introduce them slowly. For instance, you can start by having the birds in the same room together and then once both types of birds are relaxed around each other you can let them out together so that they are not forced to interact closely just yet. If one or both birds aren't used to being let out of a cage, you may have to place them closer together so that they get used to being in close proximity. Again, once they are relaxed, you can put them in the cage together and supervise initially. It's important that they have a large enough cage and plenty of food and water so they don't have to fight over resources :).
diana And you should get two cockatils or more. They need other cockatils. It's cruel to let them alone (other birds aren't an alternative).
You can have one cockateil as long as you have plenty of toys and spend alot of time with him/her.
Emma Taylor Yes, but it isn't the same like a real cockatil partner. You are a human, and you can have a deep friendship with your cockatil. But it isn't still the same like the friendship and love to an other cockatil. You can't see insite your cockatil. In my opinion needs every bird a partner of his species. They have theire individual language and theire typical behavior to speak and show feelings. And only a bird partner can give this back. Please buy ever two cockatils. It doesn't cost more and the effort is the same. And you can be sure that your cockatil doesn't feel alone. I live in Germany, and if you would have in Germany only one cockatil, you would be called an animal tormentor. I'm not so strict with this topic, but it's just safer to buy two cockatils.
Lady Wolf Yes, I agree. But it is more money for 2 cockatiels. Some may not be able to afford 2. If you can that’s great, but if you can’t you can purchase mirrors. Mirrors may not be suitable for some cockatiels because it may put them under stress. If you do decide to purchase a mirror for your cockatiel, then supervise them regularly. If you can’t afford 2 cockatiels, then be sure to spend time with them and provide them with lots to do such as scavenging toys. It stimulates the mind and body and can keep them entertained for hours! Thanks for the help🙂

Don’t pay attention to her diet diet for her cockatiel , She should not have a seed-based diet for any bird, that can kill your bird. I suggest a 60% fruit and veggie diet and 20% seed.

Even if your Cockatiel and your Budgies get along with eachother doesn't mean they should me housed together. Mirrors are also horrible for your birds as they can cause agression. Seeds are not a main diet, you should at least feed your birds a high quality pelet and/or with a veggie and fruit mix containing of 80% veggies, 20% fruit. Your parrots also don't need extra vitamins and can overdose on them. Your parrots also have a lack of enrichment, you should get all different types of toys for your parrots to decrease stress.

Yes, a cockatiel could survive in the tropical country, but I would recommend some temperature regulation if there are climatic extremes.
Freeflight is trainable. It helps to start working with a bird when it is young, so that you can start to desensitize it. Free-flight is very risky though if you are doing it outside. Escape and predatory attacks are potential hazards.

GUYS I NEED YOUR HELP!
I’ve had a cockatiel for a few years now, but I was really inexperienced when I first got her, and didn’t really bond with her. (I know, I’m a terrible person) She steps up on my finger and sits on my shoulder, but she bites my finger a lot when stepping up (I’ve researched and apparently the way she’s biting it’s a sign of aggression) I also would like to cut her nails as they are wayyy too long, but she is scared of nail clippers, and even me touching her nails! I’ve tried holding her, but she screeches and I’m afraid I might hurt her. On a good note she sometimes let’s me scratch her neck/head. Is there any way to pet her in other ways too? I know this is a lot, sorry, but I really need some answers. Thanks in advance!
Grace Lee i can help with the nail clipping: your best bet would be to go to the vet/a place where they clip nails to get them clipped. if done improperly, cockatiels can bleed to death if you cut the nail too short because their blood doesn’t clot the way ours does.

If you are un able to spend enough quality time with your parrot it is highly advised you get a second one as a friend. If you are able to spend a lot of quality time with the parrot then just having 1 is fine. Just make sure they also have a lot of enrichment in their cage for the times you are unable to spend with them. Foraging and shredding toys are a great start! Avoid dangerous toys like Snuggle huts, and mirrors though.
Research is your best friend, talking to an avian vet is your best friend, this lady's advice is spotty at best.

Health and wellness checks are always a good idea. Also if you want a good guide on parrot nutrition please visit BirdTricks and Live Laugh Birds channels. They have this awesome food PDF as well on what fruits and vegetables are great for your parrot's body. Just remember though a daily requirement of fruits and vegetables is a thing for humans, not cockatiels. A cockatiel should be getting 60-70% of their daily diet in a high quality pellet. With veggies also added daily, fruits are every other day, Sunflower seeds, and millet should only be used as a training treat. Sunflowers being rarely.

It's good to either go through rescue or a breeder. I am not sure who is in your area, but you should be able to look it up online. You can also see if there are local bird clubs or exotic pet clubs which can give you a breeder list.

just some constructive criticism, a cockatiel or in fact any bird shouldn't have a seed based diet about 25% is seeds in a cockatiels diet and the rest is vegetables fruits ext:. also most birds have a cuttlefish if you trim your birds beak in other ways that is totally fine but as this a beginners guide I recommend you should speak about cuttlefish..

PLEASE DO NOT FEED AN ALL OR MOSTLY SEED DIET!!! they need only 10% seeds, 80% pellets, and 10% veggies. Also, PLEASE DONT KEEP THAT MANY BIRDS IN THAT SIZE CAGE! Another thing, birds need TONS of toys. Not just those mirrors. If you want to Learn real things about cockatiels, check out saeshell.

A seed diet is really bad for your birds! 60% is the amount of veggies parrots should eat! And I think you have to many birds in one cage!! I would suggest getting one for the budgies on there own.
This is extremely bad care advise please if you are getting a cockatiel or any parrot for that matter I would suggest watching Birdtricks !!!

@@enakojic Yes LOL, This lady's advice is awesome if you want a bird that only lives for less than half of its normal lifespan! I came to this video, cause it shows up when you Google what to get for a cockatiel. I was hoping to learn something new, or at least normal good advice on birds in general. Instead I found another uneducated person spouting her own methodology. It is the same thing as when I went to pet stores, or talked to most people on parrot related reddit sites. It amazed me on just how many people watch a few youtube videos, and then go out and get a bird. Then rush off to the internet afterwards to learn that, turns out they need A LOT MORE than what they were prepared for with both time and money they need to actually invest in said birds.
Be nice if a more up to date video showed up when you use the google algorithms, but no you get this dribble.

I would give your bird at least a few days to acclimate. Then you can start working on getting your tiel to step up on your finger, working from inside the cage if it's not yet comfortable to come out! I do have a video on this channel on how to teach your bird to step up!

Sounds like you are making good progress! You don't necessarily have to clip wings to get your bird out. Syd is fully flighted!

mischa ohanlon In a day I would say about 3-6 hours a day. They are very social animals so you need to play with them in all your space time. Don’t just leave them in a cage all day.

Hello. This isn't to come off as rude, but your cage needs way more toys, foraging toys and perches for your birds. Also, mirrors are terrible for them and will cause psychological issues.

Why don’t you use pellets I thought they were good for the birds I use pellets for my cockatiel should I not
Syd was having problems with his stool when he was on pellets, so his vet took him off. Overall, they are still a good food to give, but not all birds do well on them.
