You asked me a lot of times, so here we are! This time I trained Bubu and took some video of the process :)
This is not an " how to train cockatiels for free flight " video, because it's just what I do, and what works for me at my conditions may not work for other people.. this is just to answere your questions :)
Of course the recall training is vital and the first step.. but getting used to the outside and learn the area is the most difficul part.
So take this for what it is and enjoy! Feel free to comment and subscribe for more!

Our cocktail was accidentally let outside by a petsitter while we were visiting family. She got startled and flew off and got disoriented because she had never been outside. Three days later she was found in a park eight miles from our house when she flew up to a family having a picnic and landed on someones shoulder. Now she is scared of the back door that she flew out of. I think she thinks that it's some kind of chaos portal lol. I wish she could have been trained to free fly, but there are a bunch of bigger birds that might eat her in our area (and a lot of cats). She did survive in the wild for three days though!

Every cockatiel around him: GO CRAZY SFDBASOFIBSFOBASF

  • @mollyjane2547
    @mollyjane2547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +463

Those of you commenting about the whistle- a cockatiel's ears are not nearly as sensitive as a human's in terms of what will cause hearing damage. To put it in perspective, the average police whistle is 80dB at its loudest and the average cockatiel scream/whistle is also around 80dB. They can get louder than 80dB though. If this whistle would cause hearing loss then so would their own screams and whistles.
The whistle has to be loud or if the birds fly far away they will not hear it. Birds take also volume of a cue into account when learning to do something on command. If you teach them to listen for a quiet whistle and then they get lost and you blow it full volume they will not recognize the full volume whistle as their cue to recall. For instance, I taught my bird to do "big eagle" in a whisper (because I was trying not to disturb someone at the time) and he will now only perform the trick if I whisper the cue (I am fading the whisper into a normal volume now to correct this issue). If he doesn't blow the whistle at full volume (and varying volumes) the birds may not associate the full volume whistle with the idea that they need to recall. Birds are very specific when it comes to what they understand to be their cue.
Cockatiel ears are designed to withstand very high volumes and very high pitched sounds. If you've ever heard an alarm call or "flock reunion" call from a cockatiel you'd notice that it's much louder and much more piercing than most whistles (police whistles included). Professional animal trainers use police whistles (which I assume is what is being used here- sounds the same and seems to be the same volume) to train all sorts of animals, including birds like small parrots and dives/pigeons. They would not do that if the volume was going to cause hearing damage. Particularly trainers at zoos- zoos are extremely strict about what their animals can have in their environments and in their diets. If the whistle would even potentially cause hearing damage the zoo would have the trainers use something else. The trainers generally blow the whistle full volume to prevent the animal from getting confused by fluctuation in volume from trainer to trainer.
Our goffin's cockatoo screams significantly louder than a dog, that whistle, or a cockatiel and our cockatiels aren't bothered in the least by our cockatoo screaming. They don't even flinch. I think if it were causing their ears damage they would at least be startled by the whistle or afraid of it.

    (Sorry for my bad english)
2 months passed away the moment i bought my calopsite, his name is valor.
I lost him on sunday 2/06/19 in the afternoon, i tried to go out and teach him to free fly because i trained him everyday inside the house and it's always come when i call him but when i go outside he saw a cat and he got scared and fly ouy and i was really sad because it's always by my side everyday. I decided to search for him in the morning of the next day and i have the luck to get him back because i trained him everyday to come back to me after a whistle or when i call his name. He was really scared and chased by other big birds in the forest and he screamed very loud at 5.00/6.00 AM to know where he is. He's very smart calopsite and really intelligent. I cried a lot when he come back to me. This kind of birds are really lovely you just need to gain their trust and attention.

Something like that happened to me so I had my bird outside *in her cage* and some other birds manage to open her cage and she flew around my neighborhood (I live in a very busy town) and we found her in a very tall tree in a neighbor's backyard she was hurt badly by the other birds and was scared shitless, she finally started crawling down but the birds attacked her and she flew away again this time a bit further on a rough tree, my mum had to crawl up the tree to get her (she cut her feet) eventually we started walking home with my hands around her protecting her from the other birds, when we got home I gave her a wash but she was very scared. Now we never put her outside unless we are there with her im very sorry about your bird and I was very lucky this happen during the day R.I.P your bird

I feel the need to point out that in some countries crows are the dominant species and kill off any new species of bird so for example Ireland and Poland, my grandmother had a budgie that flew out the window and was immediately attacked by crows. You can use a modified nerf gun, just remove the air resistor inside and shoot the crows. I guarantee you, the crows will shit their pants even if you miss. In fact it gets even easier as time goes on, soon enough the crows will start to associate you and your bird with fear and avoid you. Just make sure to conceal the blaster.

Wow that is really cool. That's awesome that you train them to free flight outside! The only concern I have is that you are letting your dog lick your little feather friend and I learned that human saliva as well as dog salivas are deadly to birds and you shouldn't allow him to do that. I currently just got a GCC a month ago because I miss my birds so much, I had to rehome 2 birds two years ago when I moved across states and took a leisure road trip and couldn't take my birds with me. When I had them, my dog could go near the bird but was not allowed to lick them. Those birds were free flighted around the entire house only. Not outside. It was cute to see the Birds feed the dog of veggies they didn't want, dropping it from the playgym. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for giving your bird this freedom and sharing the process with us. I also practiced free flight with my cockatiel. We unfortunately didn't get too far because he died of psittacosis when he was only 10 months old. But I think all parrot owners should attempt to learn this if they live somewhere where it is fairly safe. My philosophy behind it is that if something happens to the bird, it is still better to have lived a life where he was able to experience free flight, than a long life without this experience. I find it unfortunate that humans rob birds of one of the most beautiful and majestic spectacles of nature - watching a living being spread its wings and flying freely.

I have two cockatiels and they stay always free at home, I know it isn't the same thing at all, but I try to give them some freedom as I can't let them simply go away (they would die as they have always been raised by humans). Actually, one of them run away twice and he came back only five hours later as I was looking for him everywhere and calling him. I knew he trusted me when both times he flew right towards me even if he was scaried about high. Yes, this is my little story. Thanks for sharing with us your beautiful content!

I absolutely LOVED watching your training sessions with Bubu! Thank you very much for sharing it! it is very inspiring. We have had a cockatiel called Billy since he was 8 weeks old. He is now almost 22. He is free in the house but insists on the security of his cage to sleep in at night. He is getting very slow now, avoids flying but still walks to us and when we stretch our arms out, he will walk across from one of us to the other. he does not like flying down from the top of his cage, so we wait till he is ready and tells us that he wants to come down. He is forever teaching us new tricks, like dragging his plate to us, then going back behind the sofa while we throw it near him, and then he brings it back again. I think he was a retriever in his past life. Billy loves cuddles and his head scratched/massaged. We have lost birds a few birds in the past when people have left windows open in the house and it is heartbreaking to see them circling higher and higher in the air and apparently unable to come down.... Billy is very cautious and is slow to go near anything that he does not recognize, including open windows. We think we trained him but actually, it is more like he trained us to figure out what he means us to do. It is great fun though¬

I lost a cockatiel 9 months ago to a seagull. Me and spike had been free flying for 11 years, with no predators around. Perhaps the seagull had just moved to where we lived i’m not sure, it was the first time i’d ever seen one around there. I no longer let my smaller birds free fly anymore, but my two macaws and african grey are very happy to fly around.

This a actually isn't a good way to teach them to free flight. He is really just teaching the bird to fly away from him for hours and when he comes back he gets treats. Free flight is letting your bird go on a few simple laps and come back. The birds landing in trees and on the ground which isn't good. Predators can get it easily.
