I don't think i can ever gain rockets trust, his first owner broke his beak when he was baby and hes very very scared of hands,hes fine when hes sitting on my shoulder but hed rather be alone in his cage, it breaks my heart

I once had a cockatiel, she was a lutino. To get her trust I often times sit near her and play the keyboard, then after a week I began to start putting my hand in the cage for about a minute, not moving my hand. Once she was comfortable with my hand in the cage, I would give her less food and feed her by hand feeding at night. Then I put one of my hands in a step-up position and the other holding millet outside her cage. After that I just let her "step-up" my finger and she cooperated willingly, I then moved her carefully outside her cage while she was on my finger. At first, she flew away from me. But when I wen't near her holding millet she grabbed my hand like she was comfortable with me and then "step-upped". I could tell she trusted me then and there as she let's me hold her and pet her without showing signs of fear. Whenever i walk near her cage she would call on to me to get my attention. I would let her out her cage and she would fly on my head or shoulder. After a few months, I decided to teach her indoor recall for a few weeks. I was confident that she knew indoor recall that we then practiced outdoor recall. This was a stupid move from me as she was scared of this, I was confident in her but she was not confident in herself. When she tried to fly to me she missed me and panicked she kept on flying allover the place and then flew higher. And after that I never saw her again. :(

Does that mean you should never take your bird outside. How much time she should bond so that she wont leave you?
She won't exactly leave you once you gain its trust. If you plan to take it outside, attach a harness or put it in one of those pet carrier bags so accidents like what happened to me won't happen to you. She was scared and got overwhelmed by being outside.

I got my cockatiel for about one year now and he is hand tamed. He still bites me and is mean...
*UNTIL*
Just now, I took him out of his cage and I took him for a walk, without his cage but I brought his food and water. I needed to shit so I had no where to put him and he is not clipped so I had to place him on the sink in the toilet stall. He was so quiet and whenever I call him, he chirps back. When I was done and was walking towards him, he was chirping so much and kinda looked like he was smiling (I know birds can’t smile but he looked happy). His little fur on his head was up and he was chirping A LOT. I think he trusts me more now and is starting to get comfortable around me. If you have read it this far, thank you and have a nice day.💕

☺️ Actually cockatiels do smile, in a sense....depending on how you define smile...
Although, because they don't have mouths like we do, they use their eyes. 😊 They will wince their eyes in a certain way, since the muscles on their beaks contract and lift, especially while they sing or babble joyfully. When my tiels look at me lovingly or with happiness, they'll also appear to smile a little. They tend to tip their heads to the side, and will wince and sometimes bat their eyes.

My friend gained her birds trust by singing to her, whistling, and getting her used to eating from her hand. Her bird seems alot more calm when listening to her whistle. Everytime her bird freaks out when another person other than her picks her up. She just whistles to her. The bird itself doesn't whistle much but she seems to love her owners voice. The bond my friend has with her bird is so beautiful honestly. Her birds name is Adele Lol. Guess she thought the bird would be more of a singer when she named her.

Bought mine from a breeder since young, trained him to feed from my mouth. Honestly if he hears me open a bag of pretzels or any food, he flies straight onto my shoulder, starts chirping like a chick & goes straight to my mouth. Pretty funny & cute

My bird is scared of millets
You dont have to use millet as treats. It can be any sort if food they love and dont get a lot. For example seed, or fruit

So was mine, at first. How old is your bird? Try leaving the millet inbetween the cage bars. Eventually he'll become curious and give it a peck and realise how yummy it is!
Once he has scoffed it, start feeding it to him by hand. Open the cage door, hold the millet in the cage, be as still as you can (it hurts!) and let him eat. Eventually he'll be less and less intimidated by the millet and by you, since you're the one giving him that scrumptious snack that was previously hanging in his cage.
I'm no bird expert by any means but this was my method and worked wonderfully.

This video made me feel like I'm on the right track. I hand feed millet already and whistle to her. She doesn't like to step up all the time, but she let's me take her from cage to cage now willingly. Progress!

I need some help I have had my bird for over a mouth I have strained him to step up he strusts me quiet a lot and he will stay on my finger if I put by face up to him but if I take home out of the cadge that all goes away all I can do is feed him with my hand and get Hogmanay sto step up on a stick if I try use my finger he flys away should I clip his wings? I don’t know what to do

So I tried letting my bird out of the cage but he flew around CRAZY in my room and now I caannt get him back in.. And he keeps biting me Hard when I try... How do I get him back in?
Try to take youre hand in front of the bird and the other one at the back!
If the little guy isn't used to hands or to you, you can use gardening gloves (or clean thick ones...make sure that the winter or gardening gloves are non-toxic for them to bite on.) to catch him/her or for when you decide to train him/her, until the little guy gets used to you (and for you to get use to grabbing them, if and when you have to...) Is he/she a new bird? My Sebastion and Winnie send their squeaks!! 😊🎶🐦💞
use a stick or another type of perch and slowly move it towards it feet and let him get on it themselfs

Same here. Somehow mine got out of his cage and flying and screaming around my room for the past few days. I just talked to him, played my music playlist, and put food and water on the floor, last night he waddled up to me on my bed and perched on my hand and then proceeded to call a friend of mine on my phone. Its trusting me and its adorable!
Keep talking to yours and it'll trust you. It took awhile for me and I got frustrated sometimes but its worth it. :)
My family got our little Donovan recently and we love him, but I think we've got a lot to learn to get him to trust us. I can tell after watching this video I'm definitely doing some things wrong because he HATES when my hand is in the cage, even though he was being better about it before. He is super aggitated and terrified of my hand, and I worry I'll not be able to get him to trust me enough to let him spend some time outside his cage. Hopefully I can use some of this advice and he'll warm up to us!

Since I've watched your videos I have been spending time with them every day(literally sacrificing my high school homework/studying) and I have seen improvements. One of my Cockatiels is now starting to step up but the other one is still afraid of my hand(btw he only trusts me over my entire family, yes he still bites but usually the bites are "gentle" compared to the ones he gives to other people) do you have any tips to stop the biting and to stop running away from my hand? would you suggest to just try hand feeding or simply spending more time?
Hi there! My Cockatiel only feels comfortable at the edge of the opening when I open the door and also once wanted to jump on my shoulder which he did, but then he started immediately to fly.... And he flew against the window etc. Thank God all went well and he wasn't hurt, but he wanted to get into the cage as quick as possible. So how do I prevent him from flying so he first can get used to my shoulder and just sit on my finger, couch? Because as soon he's going to fly, he will end up behind wardrobes, windows etc. He does eat out of my hand and takes the seeds from my mouth, but she doesn't like fingers, only the mouth. Because he had bad experiences with grabbing her when he broke loose from picking him up to get to the cage again.
Does anybody have any suggestions for me? I have had opal my cockatiel for a while now and if I put my hand near her she’ll step on, she will eat seed out my hand and pinched fingers. She loves climbing in my head but I try to pet her and she hates it and tries to bite me. I don’t to it up from tail I just try stroking her crest and head and try giving her head scritches and she tries to bite and usually flies off. Any ideas what to do? I’m not trimming her wings because I think it’s kinda wrong for me to take what makes her feel safe.
We got a cockatiel almost a year ago. At first because I seriously wasn’t expecting this gift I hadn’t done any research so I did the dumb thing and went straight in to try and get him on my finger, obviously that was stupid. So now 3 months ago I decided I would only do is food and water until he stops hissing and attempting to bite me. I try to talk to him as much as possible but because my parents are divorced and I’m moving house every 3 days it’s hard for me to get to know him well and talk to him a lot. Even tho he has a rlly big cage and I leave it open for him to fly around he still hisses. Also when he flys out of the cage he allows me to get him on my hand and take him near his cage, then he will fly too his cage. I still would love some help gaining his trust, anything you can do to help me?

Keep in mind cockatiels need time to get used to humans. It usually takes weeks or even months to establish a relationship with cockatiels. I would recommend doing some research to help:)

Noticed that your comment was written 5 months ago....How is your little guy doing now? If he still bites, (esp most or all of the time) and if you need to grab him for some reason or decide to train him, you can wear clean and non toxic thick gloves or clean gardening gloves to handle the little fellar.

I have a pair of cockatiel. Male and Female. its more than two months in my house. the male make just some whistles, that too when it is inside the cage, female never make a sound. and the male do the step up in my finger the female never. it was brought from stores, they said they were ten months old when they sell that.
they are not eating anything apart from the bird food. i tried banana, apple , tomato ... they are not interested in anything. what to do. is it ok to leave with the bird food ?
My problem exactly, it's the age, they are too cautious, some experts gave recommended that we tape their wings which we sadly listened too and that gave them quite a scare and caused us a couple of hard bites and a consciousness torn up with guilt hehe.. Now i am being too shuttle and talk too nicely to both but im sticking religiously to the treat reward system (normally I'd give them a treat jusy because they're cute) i spray them every morning with water to refresh them, i talk to them and whistle to them, i change toys every week or two, and it's actually working, the nale even slep in my hand while i was caressing his feathers... I gues what I'm trying to say is that it does need a lot of patience and interaction and most importantly tenderness, they are really like babys only dumber hehe
Someone tell me if these are good or bad things
-My bird only goes on my hand when i offer him food and im scared he wont ever get on my hand without food
- Chirps very loudly at me I don't know if he is trying to commutive or is just very scared
- When he goes on my hand he trys to get the skin off my thumb (he just began doing that he started yesterday)
-Sometimes he seems scared when he is on my hand so i try and put him back in his cage but he doesnt want to go in

I just got my cockatiels about a week ago
They are not hand tamed
But one thing I don't understand is why they prefer my wrist than finger when I am trying to tame them
And if they do get angry they just nimble at my fingers gently.
They do hiss some times but don't really bite hard.

My name is Lyn. I have a male cockatiel that I've had for about 4 1/2 years. He used to trust me, but I went in the hospital and when I got back he didn't anymore. I am blind. I'm never sure where he is in the cage that I'm kind of afraid to do anything with him. Can you help me?
do you recommend clipping the cockateils wings when wanting to train them?
I hope you are not serious about this question and did not do it. Cutting the wings takes away his mobility and it's like cutting your legs. So you force your bird to do it, even if it doesn't want to, so it can't escape. They are flight animals.
