I have been getting so many questions lately about what exactly I do during my shift as a newborn nurse and how it compares to L&D, postpartum, and NICU nursing. In this video, I sit down with you and talk about what a typical day might look like during work. My job feels more like a clinic job versus a bedside position because I get to work with healthy babies for short periods at a time. I give meds, footprints, assist in feedings, and do a full head-to-toe assessment. Don’t worry.. I will be doing a full separate video on what a full newborn assessment looks like later on. 3 12 hour shifts then off 4 days have always sounded so amazing compared to 5-6 12 hr shifts and only 1-2 days off, that I use to do at my old job at a shelter for minor unaccompanied children.
I always say maybe I could go back to school and finish who knows 🙏
I'm a midwife in Australia and we don't even have a job description like this. Sadly. You as the primary midwife have to do the birth (unless the doctors need to intervene for fetal distress/lack of progress etc). Then when the baby is crowning you get the mother's support person to press the call bell and then a second midwife will come in to receive the baby. They do the apgars and stimulate the baby. If you're lucky they'll also do the first set of obs and help the support person cut the cord. Then they leave and all of the other things that you described have to then be done by the primary midwife while looking after the mum as well. Such as attaching for breastfeeding and baby's sugars, weight, injections and all of that. All within 2-3 hours before both mum and baby are moved to the postnatal ward. It would be so good to have someone to look after the baby while you get all of the stuff done that you need to get done because it's a lot. Just interesting to compare the two countries, loved the informative video

Question! What is the difference between a mother baby unit like you described, vs. a hospital with a nursery? I’m interested in switching over to nursery, and when I interviewed they told me the ratio was 1:6. I’m just curious as to what the difference was as far as responsibilities and whether those nurses go to births too

What courses to study this job
Hi, does the hospital train you for all of this because as new grad nurse you learn so many things coming out of school and do not get to practice it. Also how long did it take you to feel comfortable with what you are doing?
Honestly this is a HIGHLY COVETED position, so getting this job right out of school is EXTREMELY unlikely. You would need to work in labor and delivery, postpartum, or a NICU/SCN setting to eventually graduate to this job when one opens, and getting into those areas as a new grad is pretty tough, I am not saying it can't be done, but it isn't easy. It took me 13 years in my area to get into maternal child health., I do work in a saturated area, but still....

How long did it take you to become a newborn nurse?
Wow 😯 how do you get all of these really important things for 3-5 babies… do u have like another nurse helping you finish all of your tasks. I would love to get into the NICU once i bridge over for my BSN. I just think i would get a better feeling at the end of my shift as opposed to med surg where Iam currently working now.
Usually there is a nursing assistant that helps with smaller task to help the nurse on the unit.. like there bottles etc.
