Love the fact the Renault 5 has "future" tech built in V2L, V2G and V2H. Those three topics were a big focus of the All Thing Electric show in Farnborough last weekend, as were American and Chinese Sodium battery tech. The car becomes an integral mobile energy store for home and grid. The Dutch, Norwegians and Chinese really seemed to have embraced this stuff big time. Love it's looks although it is a little tight in the back, but not as bad as the EX30 ( It also doesn't cost North of £35K) Top spec in the UK will cost under £30K so it's fairly competitive. With cheaper battery tech, (LFP, LMFP or even Sodium) this could be the package that finally makes EVs affordable for us ordinary folk.
I think the best argument for the 5 is putting its price in relation to ICE cars. The 5's range was projected to start at the mid range of the Clio. And I don't think anyone is going to claim that the Clio is a pricey car.
Genius! Infinitely more desirable than any generic Chinese box. This has soul and it will stir emotions in a good many people. Wouldn’t surprise me if other brands go down the same path…
It should be an extra big kick in the backside for Ford who axed their smaller cars and should have been making a Fiesta EV instead of focussing on SUVs.
I love this thing. It's small, and it's fun, all round. It's been what seems like an age since we could say that about a normal car. Can't wait to see these out and about.

Looks fantastic. Considering all the hideous looking stuff being made by BMW and Hyundai to name just two, this is brilliant. The original R5 was also available with that same green, as was the 12
Thanks Nobby! Good review! I just can't be doing with electric cars though, for numerous reasons. Sorry EV lovers! But I can't even have one, I'm in a semi detached house, that I own, but I have a looped mains supply to my neighbour, which means.. I cannot have an EV charger installed, and home charging is THE only way that an EV makes any sense for non fleet buyers. I'll stick with my M340i touring, it's quick, and very practical, thanks!
Some company is going to work out how to reprogram these things to make them more of a hot hatch. But they need to rethink the room under the front seat for people in he back. I grew up around the Turbo and Turbo 2. 😂 Brilliant Renault.
Very odd decision to remove all exit handles ..maybe a pre production model? Hope they fix that park issue....again..hopefully on retail versions all fixed ..disappointed with the range quoted on other reviews ..not a car i would have personally but i do like the styling.
"Desperately crave" - hmmm, I don't think so - from my observation, the Chinese brands strength seems to be ultra modern, higher tech models that are not compromised by ICE culture. In terms of the Renault 5, just call it what it is - the European point of difference ( their ability to mine their back catalogue). The French do it well - Ford, not so much.
I couldn’t make the trip but colleagues who have said the power was a little hard to get down. Even with this car, I felt the car struggled a little with the torque through the front wheels in the wet. I’m sure the looks and the interior is a nicer place to look/sit but 10k is a lot. You could buy a Boxster with the money for sunny days ☺️
@@NobbyOnCars Thanks. There's lots to like about the A290. For me, the wider track and how evenly the wheel arches fit round the tyres is a big draw, but my head is struggling with the more powerful motor and tweaked suspension justifying the price tag. Some may suggest the exclusivity is worth the cash but I'm not a badge snob. I would much rather have a top spec Skoda than a low spec Audi.
@@NobbyOnCars £28k seems a lot for an hatchback, but relative to other EV prices, especially the Mini, I think Renault are pricing the R5 competitively. Maybe that's why the A290 seems expensive to me. If the R5 was £32k, the jump to the A290 GTS wouldn't be as unenticing.
hopefully it gets 300hp motor for a true go-kart feel , like OG mini but as everything nowadays 25k starting for a basic tiny city car it's just too much
Make it in Real Car Version, and you sell sell sell... as Electric, shame to loose market share, really nice design, imagine this as GT. Renault 5 has too much heritage, to end up like this.
That's a cool car. It'll be under €30k. Best of luck getting a dino engine car to match that for the same price, and don't forget, you'll charge that 5 at home on EV boost tarriff for next to nothing.
Mark. Yes an absolute WINNER! Yes an EV that makes perfect sense and looks FANTASTIC! Renault must be the brand at the forefront of EV vehicles. And technology. Yep cannot leave a comment without a pop at the cult Tesla c**p!. Hope all the Tesla cult circus are proud supporting Musk and Trump... Back to design.... this Renault 5 again illustrates just how god awful the designs and indeed the cars are not only from Tesla but Kia and Hyundai. Renault are on it! 💪👍👌
You have to hand it to Renault...their design team are on fire at the moment ! Such clever design..love all the nods to the original 5...very cool.
100% agree. It all started with the new Megane. That car was the beginning of this fantastic design era!

All French car makers have dramatically increased the level since 2014, but Renault and Peugeot ... wow... formidable evolution of those two brands.
agree fully

Renault and Peugeot yes. Citroën though... I like they are going for comfort and practicality, but the designs just aren't there.
Rarely see a car these days that just looks spot on. Apart from the range, theres really nothing to dislike about this car.
Like a lot of people, I had an original R5 when I was a student. Amazing fun to drive. Love seeing it reborn like this, looks fantastic.
So cute! Sad we don't get many options for tiny cars in the US any longer.
About time they started to add the cool nonsense stuff. They 5 battery indicator for example.
What a beauty. And the car! Manufacturers, more cars like this please.
Think the green colour and wheels look much better myself ..good wee car for someone who does not do a lot of mileage.

Nobby 👍. It brings back memories, I like the look of it.
don’t need park. Just turn it off and get out. I’ve rarely used P on my Mégane etech. It always goes in to park and puts the brake on.
A matter of getting used to but still counter intuitive I feel
I'm sold! Until I find out it's going to be €35000 in Ireland 😂
I bet you it’s going to be €40k in Malta😢
Ah the 80s , 😂 that a cheeky 😜 fun looking 5
This is what Chinese brands desperately crave - heritage.

Have you had opportunity to drive the Alpine A290? Curious to know how it compares and whether it's worth the £10k premium over the R5?

Have you driven it on the motorway Nobby?
I've seen other reviews saying the road noise is unreal at high speed.
One review said that. About 10 it was fine.
Can this car be left in the garage for long periods, or do you have to drive it a certain amount to keep the battery alive?
You'd want to be charging and draining it every so often like any lithium battery I guess but every few weeks would be ok.

For the highest spec one, it could be late 30s for sure. Not a very big car for that. Smaller battery, nicer trim perhaps is the way to go
