    This whole album tells a story of a love triangle/murder mystery/reincarnation having to do with two brothers and the older brother's wife. You'll appreciate this song on a higher level when you can hear it in context with the entire rock opera storyline. This album is called Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory. Metropolis Part 1 is a 10 minute song from the Images and Words album. Great reaction!!!

      Thanks for subbing! Welcome to the Grannimaniac family. 😁 Thank you so much for the info and for the song suggestions. I'm super stoked to hear more from Dream Theater and I'm considering doing the whole album from start to finish. I'm thinking that I'll record the whole thing in one sitting but break it up into individual songs on YT because it's tough to get folks to watch that long. I'm so glad you enjoyed the show. 🤘Thanks for watching!🤘 Kelly

      @@GrannyMetalheadTV Thanks for responding! Keep in mind that you're going down quite the rabbit hole with Dream Theater. They've been making music for over 30 years which includes side projects and tons of great covers. Anything by Dream Theater is just beyond epic. After this album, I suggest checking out Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train Of Thought. These albums are truly a spiritual experience and compositional masterpieces.

    Dream Theater is simply "in the zone" translated into music. They are clearly in the zone on this one.

    13:48 I believe thats a sitar sound played on the keyboards. the keyboards have their great distinct sound at the solos starting 9:27 which later turns into the guitar solo.

    • @GrannyMetalheadTV
      @GrannyMetalheadTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AH, that makes sense. I wondered later after I listened to it again if that might not be from a keyboard because they can do so many different sounds on those things. There was a song by Zeppelin or Pink Floyd (I can't remember for sure) that I thought for years had violins playing and it was all done on keyboard so I've been fooled before LOL 🤘Thanks for watching!🤘 Kelly

      @@GrannyMetalheadTV yes most symphony sounds done in a 5 man prog band team. Are usually done on keyboards. I know there are exceptions where for special shows they play with a live orchestra. But other than that its all keyboards.

    Hey, just found your channel! Glad you enjoyed this one. I'm a huge Dream Theater fan and would be glad to help you explore the band's great music. One reason you may not have loved prog when you were younger is prog didn't truly meet metal in the mainstream until the 90s. Although Dream Theater is certainly influenced by classic prog like Pink Floyd, Yes, and Genesis, it also has metal influences, like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Metallica.
    Dream Theater has had such a long career (back to the 80s) with over 150 songs, most of them sounding quite different from each other, so if you ask 20 Dream Theater fans what their top 10 Dream Theater songs are, you'd get 20 different answers. But if you like metal and guitar, here's my stab at recommendations:
    1. The Shattered Fortress (live version from Boston Opera House - Breaking the Fourth Wall) - Hearing the band is great but seeing them play is a visual spectacle in itself. Killer keyboard solo with heavy guitar riffs and a nice guitar solo. This song is part of the 12-Step Suite, with lyrics by the band's former drummer Mike Portnoy about his struggle with alcohol addiction.
    2. Voices (studio version) - This is an older song (from their brilliant 1994 album Awake) but has a nice mix of heaviness and vocal harmonies, with a great guitar solo at the end.
    3. In the Name of God (live at Budokan version) - Also fun to see the keyboard and guitar duel in this one, with a nice guitar outro solo. James Labrie's vocals have been hit-or-miss since his food poisoning incident in 1994 and this is at the end of a long show, so he's not perfect, but it doesn't detract too much from the otherwise great song. This song is the closer of their 2003 album Train of Thought, one of their most metal-oriented albums to date.
    4. As I Am (studio version) - This song is the opener to their album Train of Thought, and is about as straightforward as the band gets (4/4 time signatures, under 10 minutes). But it's a great unleash of anger that screams metal. Heavy riffs and a killer guitar solo at the end.
    5. Constant Motion (studio version) - This is a bit like As I Am, but a bit more cerebral and less angry. This is from what I consider to be Train of Thought's (lesser, but equally metal-oriented) 2007 sister album Systematic Chaos. But the song is still on the shorter side and has a cool guitar solo.
    6. The Glass Prison (studio version) - This may be the proggiest song so far, with several time signature changes and an extended length. But it's a popular TH-cam reaction song and vintage Dream Theater (from 2002's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence) for a reason.
    7. Panic Attack (studio version) - This is a heavy, bass- and drum-driven song from 2004's great album Octavarium. Choppy yet driving, with a heavy energy.
    8. At Wit's End (studio version hits harder, Live in London version has a better ending) - This is, in my opinion, the best song from Dream Theater's second-newest album, 2019's Distance Over Time. The song effectively has 2 parts - the first is heavy, fast, and metal, the second a ballad. Both have great guitar riffs and solos.
    9. Breaking All Illusions (can't go wrong with either studio version or Live at the Boston Opera House - Breaking the Fourth Wall version) - One of the band's best-known songs in recent years, this song has some prog elements (time signature changes, odd instrument voicings) but has a great extended guitar solo in the middle.
    10. To Live Forever (live in Japan) - Not a very metal song but an absolute masterclass by guitarist John Petrucci.
    Honorable mentions - About 120 of the band's 140 other songs deserve mention but to keep it short, I'd say Octavarium (probably the band's best song but quite proggy), Illumination Theory (fantastic song but not super metal and a bit long), A Change of Seasons (one of the band's best songs but also pretty proggy), Take the Time ( Metropolis Pt 1 (classic Dream Theater prog), 6:00 (heavy meets groove), Hell's Kitchen (instrumental) - often paired with Lines in the Sand (great guitar solo), The Enemy Inside (straightforward hard stuff - a lesser version of As I Am), Answering the Call (good song from their consistently good-but-not-great 2021 album A View from the Top of the World), A Fortune in Lies (Live at Luna Park version is good; originally from the band's 1989 album When Dream and Day Unite).
    Good luck!

      Oh my goodness!! Thank you very much for the suggestions and a bit about each one. I've added them to the list and I'm really looking forward to checking all of them out. Your reaction of nearly bursting out laughing during Jordan Rudess' key solo in the latter half of the song was great! He brings a unique, virtuosic, zany, and often hilarious flavor to the band that's rare even for a genre as niche as progressive metal.

    Welcome back Kelly. Dream Theater is what I consider the epitome of prog. If it's over 7:00 min and has keyboards, it's probably prog. John Petrucci is a great guitarist. Under a Glass Moon is what I'd do next. Nice to see you back Kelly. Hope to see Yngwie soon - Far Beyond the Sun with Unlucky Morpheus violin cover.

      Hey Mark! Good point about how to identify prog. I hadn't ever thought about it but you're right; they all have that in common. I'm thankful for the suggestion because this is a band I'd like to hear more of especially the guitarist. That really just made the song for me.
      I've hit a snag with the Yngwie/Unlucky Morpheus show. My computer is trying to die on me which is part of the reason why I took a break was to try and get it sorted out and I kinda did insofar as I can edit short shows again but every time I try to edit the Yngwie/Unlucky Morpheus show, it crashes. I've got a new one coming but it wont be here until the 18th of Aug or at least that's what Dell says. I have my doubts because of the trouble they're having at the ports with stuff being backed up because of California's stupid trucking laws. I've got a desktop that Eric is setting up for me and I'm gonna try and see if I can edit the show on it when I go on days off so keep your fingers crossed! It's great to be back and see ya again!! 🤘Take care and thanks for watching!🤘 Kelly

      @@GrannyMetalheadTV Just so you know the 7:00 min length is just a rough guideline, there are prog songs shorter. Keyboard, guitar, bass and percussion are the usual instruments used in prog music. There are tons of prog bands out there.

    • @GrannyMetalheadTV
      @GrannyMetalheadTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think I'll do that. Probably a better idea anyway because a double song show would be awfully long...too long for most YT views.

    You got to see them do this or any song live. The live version has a second extended guitar solo. They have an extensive catalogue of Live songs on youtube. They have been around since 1988 and release and album every 2-3 years. so lots to choose from. I like Symphony X but most of their songs have a sameness to them. Dream Theater is way more diverse. And their lyrics are much deeper.

    Hey Kelly,
    Welcome Back. Hope everything has calmed down for you.
    Guitar, keyboards ,bass, and drums are the only instruments credited on this album.
    From their 1999 5th album, Metropolis Pt.2 :Scenes From a Memory, the first with current keyboardist Jordan Rudess. It's a concept album.
    Metropolis Pt 1 is a song on their 2nd album, Images and Words, which is my favorite album of theirs. Pull Me Under and Under a Glass Moon , along with Metropolis Pt 1 from that album, I would recommend to put on your 'to do' list.
