If you guys have a busted unit and were able to fix it, please leave a comment and let me know how you fixed it!! And hey, don't forget to tickle the like and sub buttons ;)
@felixgodin3244 look and see if the prong is bent and the female is pushed in a little on the lower right of cradle. That's what happened to mine. Only that one pin was slight bent off
Hi guys. I have a problem with echomap uhd 93sv. The echo sounder stops and freezes, and the transducer does the same-even turning off completely. Aby solutions?
I just got off the phone with Garmin after seeing this video and they are sending me a cradle to try. I bought an echomap ultra 126sv October of 21. Went out this weekend and it would not power on. I did the troubleshooting steps and found power all the way to the cradle, even on the cradle itself. Saw this video and immediately called Garmin. They are sending me one next day air for free. The easiest transaction for service/warranty I have ever made. The support representative even sent me an email to contact him directly if the cradle does not work so we can take the next action of sending head in. Thanks Dan Richard Fishing for the video and I hope its just the cradle.
Thanks! Helped me to find my issue with 74dv. Would not power on but, I had power at the cable. (Test light). After watching your video, I grabbed my fluke meter. Turns out, I had low power from the cable. Saved me hundreds of bucks!
Great video man! I am new to garmin's as I just bought a boat that has an echomap Ultra. Me and the guy I bought it from spent 2 hours trying to figure out why it didn't want to come on but we didn't have any tools or anything. Now that I am home with the boat though I have somewhere to start thank you very much
Unfortunately not, it seems like other pins have to be correctly connected for the unit to turn on. This is evidence from several people that had defective cradles and the unit would not turn on despite having good 12v connection on the 2 power pins. You're welcome to test it though! haha
@@DanRichardFishing Correctly so, i gave it a shot yesterday and it was a no go. So the only way to really test it is with a new cradle? Edit: I pinched the female sockets of positive and negative on the cradle side and my echomap works fine now. Was about to give up till i watched you video thanks
First of all GREAT video you do a great job explaining!! I not getting power to my Garmin Echomap 74. I will follow your instructions today and see what happens. QUESTION…. I use this on a jetski so for “extra” protection I use dielectric grease on the cradle connection and the pins on the unit. This thing went bad after I made a new application of grease. Would the grease cause damage??? Any help would be much appreciated!!!!
I just got a 551VD Echo unit working again after You mentioned the base's being a Problem sometimes, I cleaned up the far left connector the red one of three with two pins in it has room for 4, Also the pin tension was too low not allowing a good connection so I pushed them together tighter so better contact was now made, This unit also powered in now after a year of not, So Thanks 🇺🇸👍
Super helpful. My Garmin 73sv quit booting up and after pulling it out of the cradle and putting it back in, it works now. I did the battery checks and everything so it’s the cradle. Thanks!!
Thank you so much for the voltage explanation! I thought mine was bricked and it turned out that 12.2 at the connector wasn't enough... I ran some new wiring, replaced my aging battery, and now my unit powers on just like last year!
Garmin has an issue with these cradles for sure. They are a quality company and after I posted this I spoke to them and they sent me out a replacement cradle. Garmin has the best customer service for sure. My first unit had a cradle failure but garmin replaced it for free. I think they wanted a shipping fee but I dont recall now. My Newer( 2 years old) 93sv UHD just had its cradle fail, the unit would start going off intermittently and would be difficult to get back on. After cleaning all the connectors it was still flakey and I noticed that reported power to the unit would waver to lower indicated voltages. Cleaning and testing and monitoring voltage inside vs the plug one minute it was perfect and the next 8 or 9 volts. I wiggled and cleaned everything I could but finally I decided to see what was inside the cradle and between the cable connectors and the multi pin strip that the finder unit snaps into. | I Drilled out the little torqs screws and viola, Between the rear and the front there is actually a multi layer printed circuit board which connects all those pins on the inside to the plugs on the outside. As with most PC boards, It is sealed and not serviceable at all. (technically), I bought a new cradle and the unit is instantly perfect again. I am going to call this a manufacturers defect with the cradles since I do not remove my unit as many people do so they just went bad internally. Two times is too many times. Garmin needs to fix these even out of warranty since it is an obvious design issue. After spending thousands on garmin livescope and fishfinders I am loyal customer but I am going to call and ask for a replacement for this second failure anyway.
Awesome job on the troubleshooting. I can just imagine how many units are sent in to get repaired and sold as refurbished and all that was done was to re-seat the power adapter...
Just thought i'd fill you in on one of my experiences of checking an inline fuse with a vom. I can't remember the device i was checking but the fuse checked good but in fact it was open on one end of the filament. I was actually checking the fuse with the vom leads lying on the fuse but should have been putting the vom leads against the end caps and pulling away when i was measuring instead of just laying the leads on the glass fuse. Cost me two days of anguish. Hope this helps someone. Btw i love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Larry, you bring up a great point! When you check your fuse, make sure you check it with a continuity tester to make sure it's good! Sometimes eyeballing it doesn't back a break hidden by the contacts. Sorry that cost you so much time and frustration! Thanks for mentioning it and for following my vids, I really appreciate it!
I have 2 of the Echomap Ultra 106sv's - had an issue with one (recovery loader ready error), thought it was bad power or software. Simple cradle swap, as you showed, solved the issue. Bad cradle, missing a pin. Don't under estimate the basics. Thanks bubbs!
My fish finder was seeing 11 volts from the battery but the fuse was still blown so replacing that did the trick. Would not have thought to have done that. Thanks so much!
Awesome glad you found the issue! Yeah you have to be careful with fuses, they don't always look obviously blown so it's good to check them with a continuity tester or change it anyway just in case. Thanks so much for your comments!
Thanks a lot. Waa connecting up my older, but barely used 43DV Chirp and it would not power up. Ended up opening it and gently cleaning the keypad contact points with an alcoholed q-tip. Reassembled and she fired up. Note to other small units: the ribbon connectors in these are extremely delicate. Thanks.
Thank you for the video's!! My Garmin UHD94sv started something strange today. When you turn it on, the screen flickers, but never goes to the normal screens......just flickers. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Brand new UHD 73sv unit will sporadically lose power or not power on. I have done the steps to trace the power back through the cradle and power is good. Wondering if I have a bad cradle. Ughh... thanks for the video!
Definitely sounds like it could be the cradle. At least yours is under warranty so Garmin will definitely help you out at no charge! Good luck and let me know if it was the cradle.
@@v2skeeder Unfortunately, after having Garmin ship me out a new cradle, try some other things, I ended up having to RMA the unit for a new one. The issue existed somewhere in the faulty unit. It’s been working good now.
Your video helped me fix my problem! I checked the voltage on the power supply cord and it did not match the voltage at the battery. Voltage at the battery was 13 and at the power supply it was 10. I found a corroded spot on the cord. Thanks!
good info, I got 3 1st gen here in Florida Harris: not yet convinced i need a live scope yet, most water I fish is under 8 ft. and under vegetation, so till I do I'll stick with my 94sv,93sv, and 74sv ,so your report was good to know knowledge to know. Thanks
Always good to see a fellow first gen owner! Yeah I don't imagine Livescope doing you much good in thick salad. I would love one but I fish a ton of heavy current so the trolling motor is constantly moving around so I wouldn't be able to keep it pointed at all. I have my eye on the HB Mega360 to be honest...
@@DanRichardFishing yeah just got the sale catalog from bass pro shops, seems come march 11th the live scope is on sale for $1299.99 with the $200.00 rebate, so if your gonna, its time" and yes I too am waiting to see hummingbird's answer to live sonar, maybe live 360?
@@mickeybaker7877 I am seriously looking at completely moving to HB and can't wait to see the Live product. HB however has horrible supply chain issues.
Thanks phil, it was the dang cradle that threw me off! it was Garmin tech support that said even though the voltage was correct the cradle could still be defective, so good call on that one lol!
Hi Dan, I have had problems with my EchoMap Plus 73cv that I can fix by just clicking the microSD memory card in its slot, click it out and back in again and reboot the chart memory card, this worked !
Dan - great video - I have the same gen 1 echomap sv which first time it has not powered on (6yrs). I tried everything you showed but still nothing - any other suggestions? Thanks
Oh no, sorry to hear the original that started it all is not working! Was there anything that seemed to trigger it to not work or did it just stop working one day to the next? And I know on these it's that really small power cord that plugs in to the unit about the size of an eraser on the back of a pencil. Did you check that for voltage?
@@DanRichardFishing Dan thanks for getting back to me. Previous to this winter, I had the unit rigged up as a portable unit on a board since I only had a small aluminum boat. I would take the entire unit and store inside through the winter. However last year I finally got a boat where I installed the unit on the console. This past winter, I left the cradle on the boat, stored in a boat house and took the unit home to store inside. No issues last fall and the first day that I snapped it in place this spring it would not power on - nothing. First time the cradle was stored apart. I checked all points along the power cables, including at the cradle port - no issues - fully charged battery reading no lower than 10V. I did speak to Garmin - nothing they can do, unit is too old now where they no longer offer refurbished units. They also no not have any service shops up here (Ontario). So I am pooched! I will try cleaning the unit prongs and plug port with some alcohol this weekend just to make sure they are clean and have good contact. Other than that, I am at a loss!
Dan - follow up to my issue - I dealt with Garmin service on line where they ended up sending me a new power cable. They had noted that in similar situations where you can test power is getting to the power plug, for some reason it does not get to the unit. The new cable arrived and worked immediately. Garmin service was great, they stuck with me until it was solved. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks again for your help.
Curious if you have came across my issue. I’ve traced power all the way to the cradle (12.7v). My unit will power up but the startup logo stays dimmer than usual and after so many seconds “transfer failed” pops up and then stays on that screen until you press the power button for it to go back off. Any ideas?
Where did you find the required voltage for the unit? I'm having problems with my livescope freezing up. The livescope is on its own lifepo4 battery but the 93sv is on the cranking battery, which shows, according to the 93sv a voltage range of 12.3 down to 11.8 by the end of the day, so I'm hoping that's the problem. thanks
You can actually find the voltage requirements right on the echomap product page on garmin's website, just Google your echomac model and it'll come up under the specs. If I remember correctly the minimum voltage required for a echomap is actually 9 volts.
Dan, I just got to this video. Very much appreciated. I don't know how much you might know about the Garmin Echomap 50s but, it just started malfunctioning in that, it will not display any charts/maps/previously recorded tracks. It functions otherwise normally. It sees fish, it shows depth, it displays different *combination* screens and more. It just won't display any charting. I have no idea where we are on our lake Havasu. I mean, I know where I am but, it's not showing me. Might you have any ideas on where to start trouble shooting? This unit is mounted into the dash of our boat and Garmin doesn't make a replacement that's the same size. So, I'd like to keep this one if I can get it repaired. Scott
Wow that's really weird! So you don't see the depth on any sonar screen at all or a map screen? Does it show a zero or does it not even say depth anywhere?
I have the same issue. Garmin has sent me two transducers and neither made a difference. They wouldn't allow me to send head unit for them to check and after my warranty expired they were done with me. My 94sv has been collecting dust for a couple years now.....go Humminbird!
@@Bidenmadeamess Crappy Customer Service was my experience too. I felt like they felt BOTHERED and PESTERED by me inquiring on a troubleshooting issue even though my unit was only a few months old. Their answer to almost every question I asked was to buy another unit because they couldn't care one iota to help me get it fixed. Now it's well out of warranty so I will be troubleshooting soon. I will be going with a Lawrance or other brand unit next time. Garmin can go sit on a cactus and rotate as far as I'm concerned. Worst $750 I've ever spent. Might as well have thrown that money in the nearest trash can!
@@theINQBS since the garmin 94sv, I have a humminbird helix and a lowrance hook reveal ts. I like both very much and haven't had the first issue and both are easy enough to use that they are pretty much plug and play . I would give the lowrance a slight edge but am very happy with both.
Extremely helpful video and thank you for sharing, however I shouldn’t have to be doing this for a unit that’s only 2 years old when I have a 10 year old Lowrance in my boat that has never had the slightest issue with it. Don’t think I’m going to be buying Garmin moving forward I’ll switch everything back over to Hummingbird or Lowrance. This is insane to think that vibration can cause the power supply cables to shift off of the contact. Hello, you’re in a freaking boat going over waves what the heck do they think is going to happen. Here’s an idea “MAKE THE UNIT BETTER” like Lowrance and Hummingbird. I changed out all but one of my Lowrance units to Garmin spend over $5K for a Livescope setup with the black box and 2 grafts and it’s lasted just over 2 years and it’s broken. The 10 year old Lowrance is running like it’s brand new and it’s the one that is fixed to the boat out in the elements. My Garmin goes on the front for Livescope and into a padded backpack when I get off the water and stored in my house. Expected much more out of Garmin especially from their customer support. I spoke to a complete useless customer support representative who had no clue what he was talking about when he was speaking to my master mechanic after being on hold for over an hour. I’m Ripping everything made by Garmin off my boat. This is the worst experience I’ve ever had purchasing a product for $5K and it lasted almost 3 years.
Tried everything you mentioned in the video. Really in depth and helpful. However, my Garmin EchoMap Chirp 74sv still does not turn on. I bought the cradle for nothing. Yikes. I was hoping that was the issue. In your opinion, should I move on and get a new one or continue to try and fix it??? Mahalos for your help.
The manual on my brand new Garmin Echomap UHD 93SV says input voltage can be from 9-18 volts dc. I have the 9" model but the manual says the same for the 6 and 7" models as well.
That's a really good point and I did check and you're absolutely right. Garmin tech support have told me several times that the voltage needs to be 12 volts or higher for the unit to turn on so I'm going to have to give them a call and get clarification on that. Either way your battery voltage on your boat should be 12.6 to 12.8 when fully charged or your battery is on the way out. I'll post an update when I get more information :) Thanks so much for bringing this up!
OK I spoke to Garmin and got some clarification on the 12.0 volt rule with Garmin vs the voltage range in the manual. So in a bench environment or standalone environment such as an ice fishing combo, then the voltage in the manual will work and power it on, so I was mistaken about not turning on at 12.0 volts. The importance of 12 volts is when you're on a boat because when you turn over your engine, your voltage actually drops (just like in a car). When you're reading under 12 volts, especially as you get close to 11 volts, the drop in voltage when you start up will dip under 9 and shut off your units. As mentioned in the video as well, any dip under the 12.2 mark will start setting off the voltage warnings on your echomap, however you can adjust that threshold. I'll make a follow-up video about this corrected information and link it to this video, thanks so much for bringing it up!
Hi Alex, I'm afraid not. :( What you can do is go on fishing or boat forums such as www.bbcboards.net/ or www.thehulltruth.com/ and ask on there if anyone has a defective 54CV laying around that they could sell you for parts. Hope that helps!
This is absolutely awesome! Just had to go all the way to reconnecting the ribbon inside, but it saved all my waypoints and, even better, the cost of a new unit! Thank you for this awesome tutorial.
That's fantastic, so glad it helped! You must have felt so relieved when you saw that loose cable and knew it was that and your unit was saved! Thanks so much for letting me know you were able to fix it! Tight lines :)
Hi Dan - like your channel - looking forward to learning a bit and sharing too :-) SO. I have an Echomap that's built in to my Seadoo 2019 Fishpro. Last year, out on Bob's Lake in NE Ontario, I hit an underwater log (BANG!). After that, the sonar stopped working. Everything else, GPS, Nav is working. It's a puck-style - on the inside of the hull. So, it seems like I might need to replace the Transducer? Any ideas? Thanks!
Hi Gary, thanks for the kudos on the channel! As for your Echomap sonar issue, it could be a couple of things... First thing is to check and see if you have sonar options from the main menu on your Echomap.... if you have no options to view your sonar like the downview or traditional sonar, then your Echomap is not even detecting the transducer anymore and it will need to be replaced. If you DO have sonar options but the feed is dead, then I strongly suspect that the impact may have cracked the epoxy seal on your transducer puck on the inside bottom of your hull or has completely broken off. When you get any air between the puck and the hull, you get a dead reading because the ping signals are just bouncing off the hull instead of going through it. So check and make sure the puck isn't broken off or moves when you pull on it. If it's securely attached with no movement, then you will need to replace it. If it's broken off, then you will need to clean off the old epoxy and re-glue it. Make sure you use a slow curing 2 part epoxy for gluing transducers such as Hawkeye epoxy or Lowrance epoxy. Regular 2 part epoxy cures fairly quickly and the resulting chemical reaction produces air bubbles within the epoxy as it cures. The result is a glued on puck with air bubbles in the glue, and as mentioned, air = BAD! A slow curing epoxy won't get the bubbles. Hope that helps, let me know how it turns out!

I have a echo model 70dv which has a brand new power harness and that still does not get it to power up about a month ago it tried to power up when I tried it on the boat without the new harness at home on a battery I’m getting a 12.37 reading not on the boat any ideas please
Hi Dan. My Garmin 95sv stopped working. I followed your video and it took me all of 10 minutes to get it working again. It was just the ribbon connection as per your video Legend
Great video! I just installed a Echomap UHD 73sv on my kayak that I purchased in March. I tested it, as I was installing it, and it turned on just fine. I turned it off by the power button and then removed the monitor so I could finish cleaning up. Then when I put the monitor back on the cradle, it wouldn't turn back on. I saw your video and headed straight to purchase a volt meter. My cradle is getting 12.4 - I have a small battery for my kayak that other kayakers are using for their Garmin units. I was hoping there was some kind of reset button or something? ;) . Any ideas?
You can do a master reset by holding home and power buttons down at the same time and you should see "Delete all user settings" appear. Release the buttons and select yes for the reset. If that doesn't work, I would contact Garmin and file a warranty claim or ask for a new cradle. You still have a warranty if you got it in March so Garmin will cover you :) Good luck!
@@DanRichardFishing You are so right! Even though my cradle was showing that it is getting power at 12.4, it was the problem. Garmin sent me a new cradle and now it works perfectly. Crazy. Garmin does not know about this problem though. They wanted to send me a new head unit. I had to talk them into sending me a cradle instead. Thanks so much!
I have a striker 4 unit. Unfortunately only has the gold directly connected ribbon cable. I confirmed power to the inside terminals (on the inside of the case where the power terminals connect to the board). Any other suggestions?
Hi Tony, unfortunately I am not familiar with Striker units so I can't tell you for sure what to look for. Can you tell me when or how it stopped working? Did something happen all of a sudden like a fall or a heavy rainfall or just one day to the next it stopped working?
Dan Richard Fishing it has been rained on a couple times. But never really drenched or submerged. One day it worked. Next day it wouldn’t even turn on and beep. I was hoping it was a loose connection but no connections. Not sure how to probe around either.
Dan Richard Fishing 12.8. Fresh battery. Measured at cable. Also measured inside case at the internal connector. So power is ok, wire ok, fuse ok, and case terminals ok. Maybe power button connection issue to board or some circuit component issue. But don’t have circuit diagram to know where to prove for where an open circuit might be.
Nice! Very education. Well done. My 94sv has a different issue. Waiting on an email from Garmin. Mine has rainbow vertical and horizontal scrambled pin strips.
Thanks so much and sorry to ear about your issues with your unit! Garmin support is really good from my experience so I'm sure they'll get you straightened out. Let me know what happens if you get a chance :)
Hi mate. I try to install a cracked map on Echomap plus 7.2 and now is turning on but is loading the soft....forever. How can I bring it back to the original factory soft ??
Hi Dumitru, sorry to hear you're having issues. Yeah installing those cracked maps is super risky, I wouldn't recommend every using them. So when you take the SD Card out, the unit just tries starting up forever? You can reset it by doing this: 1. Start with the device powered off. 2. Press and hold the Home and Power buttons. 3. Continue to hold both buttons until "Delete all user settings?" appears. 4. Release the buttons. 5. Select Yes. Hope that helps!
Having issues with my echomap 95SV. Screen is dim, almost dark. Just enough to barely read the screen. Dimmer is set to max. What might the issue be? It’s a freshly charger battery (13V). Tried two different batteries just to be sure.
Hey Dan, Hope you can help me. My one unit the fuse blew on me so I changed the fuse and I still can’t get the device to turn on. I checked batteries I’m getting well over 12 volts for both of them. I checked the power cable and noted that I’m getting 8.5 volts from It which is the issue. What I’m not sure though is whether I need a new power cable or if the new fuse I put in is restricting some flow, any insight on this issue?
To clarify, everything was working fine until the fuse blew. Once I changed the fuse, the second fuse I put It also blew and now the I have a third fuse in and I’m only getting 8.5 v
OK something is definitely off, are you sure your cable is not damaged somewhere along the run? I'd pull the full cable out and inspect that it's not cracked or been been severely pinched someplace. Once you confirm the cable is physically OK, check the voltage just before the fuse. Remove the fuse from the fuse housing and then touch the positive of your multimeter to the fuse contact coming from the battery and touch negative wire to the negative pin of the cable. If that's good, put the fuse in but don't close the housing. Now do the same test but touch the fuse section that is sticking out from the holder to the positive and see if you get the 12v. If you do, then you know its something damaged past the fuse towards the unit connection. If you have 12v throughout all this, I would then cut the cable maybe 2 feet from the red connector that plugs in to the unit and re-check the wires. If that's STILL good, but you still only have 8.5v at the connector pins, something in the connector was damaged. For me the key is that you blew the fuse twice, so something is shorting out in your wire causing it to pop. Give that a try and let me know what you find!
@@DanRichardFishing hey Dan, thanks for the advice, I figured It was something with the socket in my boat. However I’m having a very similar issue with my other Garmin unit in the back. The Fuse keeps blowing, I used the multimeter and I was getting around 13.5-14 volts from the power cable signaling It was working. But It blows as soon as I turn the unit on. I tried switching to another battery that was putting out 12.5 volts thinking maybe the 14 was causing the fuse to burst and the fuse still burst! I then used my multi meter to check the connection/wires before the fuse (a few inches away from the yellow fuse holder) and it’s reading 12.5-13 volts as well yet fuse still blowing when turning on my unit .Not sure what to do now 😅
ECHOMAP plus 65cv was working fine. Then knocked off the transducer off. Replaced the unit on the transom. Came on and seemed to work fine. The the screen got extremely hot then quit. Any suggestions?
Wow that is a tough one! It seems awfully coincidental that the failure happened right after damaging your transducer, but I don't see what one would have to do with the other. If the unit is totally bricked up (doesn't power on at all) and you've done all the checks in the video, your unit may be toast. Have you opened it up and checked for any areas that seem damaged by heat?
Hi Joseph, sorry to hear about your 50DV not working! So that's definitely an older unit and no, it doesn't need the cradle as the power cable connects directly to the unit. Can you confirmed that you have power going to the pins on the plug that connect to the unit?
Hi Alan, yes you absolutely need to fuse any electronics connected to your battery otherwise you risk severely damaging your unit or even cause a fire if there is a short.
Hi Jon, I'll admit that's a new one! So holding the power button down doesn't shut off the unit, but works to turn it on? Maybe the easiest way to get around that would be to install an on/off switch. You might always want to do a reset and make sure you're running the latest firmware as well if you haven't already.
My Echomap UHD cradle on boat number 2 isn't working. I bought it from directly from Garmin less than a year ago. I called them today and they told me there is no warranty on the cradles. Is that right?
For me it was odd. A battery at 12.7 volts did not work but one at 13.3 did. I will have to check my cradle and see if it is dropping volts. Thanks for the video!
My Garmin Echomap 73sv screen doesn't show anything but it turns on. The screen will sometimes be white with vertical lines and other times it looks like the white fuzzy screen is covering the actual screen. Any ideas?
your great mAn! one problem tho.... you basically make all these how to videos and I imagine your costing yourself a little business... imma try and fix mine with the hope that your still willing to tinker with her after me if I were to make a little mess! thanks
Hahaha thanks Rick! To be honest, I am so busy with my day to day job and stuff around the house, I barely have time to make videos, let alone start another business lol! But it is an interesting thought... 🤔
Just had a garmin striker 4 turn off on my dad while he was casually cruising the boat for the first time. I tried messing with it this morning but got sidetracked, just 5 mins ago I unplugged the power and plugged it back in and it came right on. Now I’m just here to see if there was a reason to why it randomly cut off. Either way just gonna watch
I have a Garmin echo 551dv and it just stopped too came up low battery to start with , when I put it to a battery you can see the screen comes on completely black then when power off goes a grey colour , Garmin said they couldn't do anything as it's old unit , does anyone know what the problem can be please
Help please. My Garmin won’t power on. Battery is 3 yrs old but has 12.8v But the end of power cord only reads 12v I see no problem with connectors to circuit board 🤷♂️
I have full power on my ECHOMAP Plus 64cv but the down scan is all pixelized and drops off the picture in square blocks! It's been used MAYBE a dozen times and then this. NOTHING has changed, my unit has never fallen and it just did this out of the blue. It's the older model with the 3 plugs in the rear as well I will be trouble shooting it soon. I'm thinking it ay be the little ports not he plug that remain on the boat are slightly oxidized so I will take a carb cleaning pin and slide it on in them to clean out any potential oxidation. I live in South Florida so it's quite possible a couple drops of salt water got on the pins and caused oxidation is what I'm thinking. Worst case scenario I'll have to buy a new transducer to replace my existing new one. I called up Garmin while I was under warranty and sadly they were terrible in the way of helping me in any capacity which ticked me off and I will never buy another Garmin product as a result, but I'm going to prep my boat to sell, so I'll just fix this one and move on from there.
The cradle would have to be replaced unless you know how to repair circuit boards, which I do not. Garmin replaced mine outside the warranty period so give them a call if you suspect your cradle is dead and see what they say!
Contact cleaner and dielectric grease is your friend. If you don't have contact cleaner take some white vinegar sparingly and put it on a toothbrush and scrub and then use rubbing alcohol to polish the pins
I've been reading that there is a design defect in the Plus cradle that allows water to get inside the connector housing and completely corrode the inside circuit board. The connectors on the cradle and on the unit look brand new. I'm going to take my defective one apart to see if that's true. I use dielectric on connectors exposed directly to water but you're not supposed to on cradle connections. Dielectric grease is not supposed to applied directly to metal connectors, but to the casing to seal it. Directly on Garmins site: support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=bbJlJMpt3u14FLzFXZSC37#:~:text=While%20the%20power%20cables%20for,metal%20contacts%20of%20a%20connector. I highly recommend NOT using it on batteries, it makes a disgusting gummy mess. Use a terminal battery spray like Permatex. Good tip for cleaning the connectors, I use that same trick or sometimes alcohol.
@@DanRichardFishing I have one of the pins on the back of a 73sv plus that corroded completely, breaking off inside the cradle. I have taken the back cover off and nothing corroded inside thankfully. How to fix though... It appears the pin is staked to the cover (male on both sides of the cover)..... I am not sending in for $$$ repairs... can a guy just purchase the cover from Garmin?
Welp, it didn't work for me. I bought a new cradle on Amazon for my Echomap 94sv Plus based on this movie, AND I talked to Garmin and they are sending me a new cradle (I'm supposed to take people shrimping in two days so covered my bases). The Amazon Garmin cradle arrived and I plugged my unit into it and....nothing. 12.7 volts at the cradle. Thankfully I can get a refund for the Amazon one. I'm on the phone now with Garmin. The guy says that my unit is discontinued so they can't offer me a replacement. I think I'm out of luck. It was a four year old unit. The Garmin guy said I might as well try to take it apart and see if something was loose. I'm going to try taking it apart. Update: there was a little 3/16" cable that didn't have a connector that didn't seem to be connected to anything. I couldn't figure out where or how to attach it. I'm off to the store to find another unit that will fit the hole I cut in the dash of my boat. Not a happy ending for this guy.
Its aggravating to be asked to hit thumbs up and subscribe at the beginning of a video. That's like being asked to tip a waiter before you know what their service is like. I gave a thumbs up AFTER I watched the presentation. It looks like I need a "test" cradle to go any further. I didn't realize the cradle was a likely failure mode.
If you guys have a busted unit and were able to fix it, please leave a comment and let me know how you fixed it!! And hey, don't forget to tickle the like and sub buttons ;)
Hi, I have some questions for you. Ive tried everything and it still dont work
@felixgodin3244 look and see if the prong is bent and the female is pushed in a little on the lower right of cradle. That's what happened to mine. Only that one pin was slight bent off
Hi guys. I have a problem with echomap uhd 93sv. The echo sounder stops and freezes, and the transducer does the same-even turning off completely. Aby solutions?
THANK YOU!!! Took the device apart, the cable was completely out of the socket! Powered right on. You are the MAN!

I really appreciate it you just saved me a whole bunch of time and frustration. Just opened it up and pushed in the ribbon. Much appreciated
Fixed a EchoMap 73SV that would not power up by reseating the ribbon cable which was halfway out of the connector. Thanks for doing a video on this!!

Now that I am home with the boat though I have somewhere to start thank you very much
Great info, are you able to plug negative and positive directly to the unit without a cradle via female pins
|
Thank you! Thought my 43dv that I use on my float tube was bricked, your video saved me. Thank you again!
That's awesome! What step saved your unit?
Awesome job on the troubleshooting.
I can just imagine how many units are sent in to get repaired and sold as refurbished and all that was done was to re-seat the power adapter...
Yeah that's a good point. But I'm sure most people aren't comfortable cracking up the units to look themselves. That is until they see me do it haha

Thanks I have the older one. You gave me few things to try
Awesome, please let me know if you're able to fix it!
Thanks.

If I remember correctly the minimum voltage required for a echomap is actually 9 volts.
what about if the memeory card slot isnt reading the micro SD cards? Is there anything I can do if its maybe corroded?
Dan,
I just got to this video.
Scott
Hello thanks for the video. I have a Garmin that no longer shows the depth. It’s not a week old. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!!!!
Hopefully you can return the cradle! Did you also pop it open and check for the ribbon cables?
Gonna run home and try these thanks for the tips man
Thank you. My gpsmap 1020xs didnt want to turn on. It was the flat cable inside. Working now! :)
Hi are you know where I can buy a echomap 54cv parts like Device Keys? thanks for video

I have 3.5v to my positive bottom two holes on my cable where the FF plugs in…nothing else in any other holes. Do I replace fuse?

Hi do you have data sheet mainboard this model please.
Hey Dan,
Hope you can help me.
Love the info keep it up buddy
Will do, lots more boat vids coming :)
I’m having interference on my Garmin uhd 93 when the mkinnkota mother is on my autopilot 120
And you're running the power for the 93 off a different battery than you're trolling motor?
Seriously, Garmin needs to give you a Call!!! Garmin, give Dan a new Garmin!!!
I've applied to their ambassador program but not a peep. I'm too small potatoes for now I guess ;)
Hello there ik it's been awhile since your last post of this. But I have a Garmin echomap 50dv that isn't turning on anymore. What's the issue?
Does my Garmin echomap 50dv need a cradle that you speak of?
Hi Joseph, sorry to hear about your 50DV not working! So that's definitely an older unit and no, it doesn't need the cradle as the power cable connects directly to the unit. Can you confirmed that you have power going to the pins on the plug that connect to the unit?
You’re a Genius!!!
Equal parts genius and dumbass to be fair lol!
Do you really need the fuse if you only using the Garmin unit and not using anything else
Hi Alan, yes you absolutely need to fuse any electronics connected to your battery otherwise you risk severely damaging your unit or even cause a fire if there is a short.
What if unit won't shut off, any ideas?
Hi Jon, I'll admit that's a new one! So holding the power button down doesn't shut off the unit, but works to turn it on? Maybe the easiest way to get around that would be to install an on/off switch. You might always want to do a reset and make sure you're running the latest firmware as well if you haven't already.
My Echomap UHD cradle on boat number 2 isn't working. I bought it from directly from Garmin less than a year ago. I called them today and they told me there is no warranty on the cradles. Is that right?
My Garmin ecomap 94 sv was wired to 24v system is it ruined
Ex excellent help!!! Thanks Dan
You're very welcome Max!
My trouble is different, the sun har changed my crawler plastikk so i had to use strip. To get contact.
Glad you were able to fix it!
Wow! Well done!
Why thank you kind sir! :)
Great video !!! Congrats
Thank you! :)
Thank you.....Well Done ! !
You're very welcome and thank you!
Great video, thanks!
You're welcome!
Battery is 3 yrs old but has 12.8v
But the end of power cord only reads 12v
I see no problem with connectors to circuit board 🤷♂️
Anyone ever have a Garmin 94 sv Gen1 that says transfer failed already called Garmin had a new cradle and power cord sent
Does anyone have any insight
What happens with the cradle when it fails? Is there no way to fix the broken cradle? Looks like my cradle has broke. =(
The cradle would have to be replaced unless you know how to repair circuit boards, which I do not. Garmin replaced mine outside the warranty period so give them a call if you suspect your cradle is dead and see what they say!
@@DanRichardFishing I'm having a email dialogue with garmin right now, see what they say. Unfortunately the warranty passed out this summer.
I'm no circuit board expert, but it seems like a small problem to fix for those who work with circuit boards.
You da man!
I do what I can, thank you :)
That’s a video to do, “How to use and what to use a Multimeter on” and how to read it.
They're definitely super handy tool to have, I've used mine for working on the house, boat and truck!
Mine turns on but then goes dim to point I can’t see it.
My craddle that the screen sits in,will not let the screen come on why ,this is my second craddle that has went out, what's going on withem
Thanks ,watching your video hejped.low battery.
Why wouldn't you start by checking cradle? If there's power there you know the battery, fuse and wiring are OK with a single test.
Everyone I know that runs garmin are all the same I won't buy any more I'm switching
