Thanks so much for your support everyone! This was a video a bunch of folks asked about and I promised I would do and it was a BIG one to edit with all the little click effects and arrows and fast forwarding etc. Was fun to edit but most of all, I hope it helps you figure out how to dive in to the ActiveCaptain app and how to update your Echomap via WIFI with your phone! For those of you that do use ActiveCaptain, what do you think of the app? Don't forget to smash the like and subscribe! Thanks ya'll! ✌
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens th-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Keep in mind everyone that the last Garmin update was so large that they removed the simulator files in your unit. If you like the simulator will need to reinstall the files later after you update your software. I uploaded the simulator files on my iPad then transferred to a card and then took the card out of my reader and into the unit and loaded it back in. Thanks Dan for the great video on this.
Wow, been struggling with our Garmin unit. I think the Garmin documentation is terrible, this is really helpful. We are pretty dialed in using the operational modes to target fish but feel like we aren't using all the capabilities.
Great timing on your video Dan. I have the same ECHOMAP and my ActiveCaptain is telling me that version 13.30 is ready to download. I’ve saved your video which will certainly help when I’m ready to download it.
Hi Dan, I love the videos as they are very informative and entertaining. I have 2 9” garmin echo map units, one on console and one on bow connected by a data cable My question is when I update as you did in this video will it update both units at one time due to data cable connection or will I need to put std card into each unit separately to update. Thanks for all your help.
Hi Shawn, I am going to assume you are talking about Plus or UHD models and they are connected via the network cable. Assuming you have at least software version 12.00, then you can update it through the ActiveCaptain app by connecting to just one unit. You simply need to decide which unit is your WIFI unit and then on the other unit, shut off WIFI. In the WIFI unit, make sure you have your AC SD Card in there and then connect. Both units should appear in the AC App and from there you can update both. If you use the old school method using an SD Card to do your updates, you will need to do each unit one by one. Hope that helps! :)
Just subscribed after just seeing 1 video.. you rock man and have info no one else shares. What kind of batter do you have to run your unit in the house like that to use the unit indoors?
Wow thank you so much for subscribing, I really appreciate it! I've actually taken a break the last couple of months but I'm back at it this week with more content coming soon. For the office battery I actually use a 3.5 amp hour 12 volt alarm system backup battery, you can get them on Amazon for like 25 bucks :) Hope that helps!
@@DanRichardFishing It does thanks! What cable do you use to connect it from the battery to the unit? I saw it was just 1. Can you get that off of Amazon as well? New to this part. If you have a recommendation or a link it would be appreciated.
Thank you for the info, very informative, my only question is, can I use the same cards that came with my units for updates, or should I buy new cards, I have 2 units
great video , i just bought a GPSMAP 1243XSV my vessel is out of the water for a while I want to register this new system to my Garmin express & active captain ,so what battery are u using to fire up the garmin in your work station, is it a 12v marine battery or a 18V lithium battery ,also the power cord to the system & red power & black groun wires to the battery correct ? THANKS Brad
Hi Brad, congrats on your new Garmin unit and thank you for watching my video! In pretty much all of my videos where I power the units in my office, I am using a 5AH AGM 12v battery I bought from Amazon typically used for the backup on an alarm system, and you can find all kinds of these on Amazon for $25. For the power, you are correct - I connect the black wire to the negative and the red wire to positive. You can ignore the brown and blue wires on the power cord, those are the old school networking wires for 1st and 2nd gen echomaps (assuming your power cord has those wires on it). Hope that helps, enjoy your new unit!
this is the most informative video on Garmin Echomap that I have found thank you so much. I would like to have more accuracy whit my UHD 95sv and I get no information I have found a steady cast but not sure if it will really help? I was planning on getting one more unit but also not too sure on the networking !?
Hi Pascal, thank you so much, I am glad you've found the videos to be helpful! Using your electronics is a constant learning process and the more you use them, the more you will understand what they do. It gets easier with time, I promise! So Steadycast is a heading sensor that makes sure your units always know which way your boat is pointed via the sensor, rather than your GPS direction. Unfortunately you need to setup a whole NMEA network for this to work and I decided myself not to bother. I wish Garmin would just make a heading sensor that connects to the NMEA 2000 port and it's done! So when you say you want to have more accuracy, what exactly do you mean? What accuracy are you looking to improve? Networking is super easy, you just have to get a network cable and connect the units and it all pretty much automatically detects the other unit. I found it very simple. The only pain in the butt is if you want to add Panoptix Livescope, you will have to get the GMS10 Network Hub because the Panoptix GLS10 black box requires a network plug on your unit to connect. So if you have both units connected, you don't have an available plug for the black box. That's one of the reasons I went with the Ultra units, they have 2 network plugs on each unit, so no need for the network hub. Hope that helps, all the best and feel free to ask more questions!
Thank you for this video. I am a new subscriber and have just purchased a new Echomap UHD74sv with the GT56UHD-TM transducer. So I'm not only new to your channel, but I'm new to Garmin marine electronics as well. My unit will arrive in 4 days, and I'm wondering how to provide power to the Garmin unit inside my house (vs. on my boat). I'm just trying to get ahead of the learning curve. Thanks again!
Hi Mike, thank you so much for subscribing to my channel and welcome to the world of Garmin! I power mine by keeping a small 12v alarm system backup battery in my office and an extra Garmin power cord. When I want to use the unit in my office, I pull the cradle section off the RAM mount in my boat and just plug it in my office.
@@DanRichardFishing thank you for your reply. I'm going to create a way to seamlessly do this and your response puts me well down that road. Here's to tomorrow!
Mike: Same question - I'm on the same learning curve as you, couple months behind you. I found a 12V DC 2A wall wart in my basement "used equipment department", cut the DC plug off and wired that to the EchoMap 93SV power cord. Works well powering the unit for the past week... Wal wart model # HK-AX-120A200-US. Dan - thanks for the high quality content!
Good video. I want to make a note on a correction though. You are correct on the must have an Echomap product, BUT this works with non touch screen as well. You stated that it only works with touch screen and that is incorrect. I run both 1022 and 1222 and it works just fine, plus I do updates for people with the non touch screens. Great video, just that information was incorrect.
I'm not sure what you mean exactly, Wi-Fi is only available in Echomap touch screen models, not in the older first gen models that have non-touch screens. What is an Echomap 1022 and 1222? I think you might be referring to GPSmaps not Echomaps.
@@DanRichardFishing Thanks for the reply. First in no way am I arguing with you, so please do not take it that way. The way you said it and now that you explained it above it sounded like you were saying that ONLY echomap touch screens have Wi-Fi and not other models like GPS map have it. I am using both GPSmap 1022 and 1222 and they have Wi-Fi. Sorry for the confusion. I also watched this in the middle of the night when I could not sleep so probably misunderstood your comment. Thanks for the reply and great content!
Ahhh OK I got you! Yeah sorry if it was confusing, this video was focusing on Echomaps only as I only work with Echomaps and I don't know anything about GPSMaps. I was about to go dig out my older CHIRP unit to see if it had Wifi, I thought I was losing my mind haha! All good, thanks for replying and clarifying what you meant :) And thank you for the kind words on the content, I really appreciate it. Tight lines!!
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to make videos like this. These videos helped me out a lot. I have a question. In activecaptain, on the upper right side (on your Garmin). Where it say owner and have a name. Where did the name come from. I did not name it, but a name popped up there. How do I change that name.
Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm really glad these videos are helpful! OK so this is a little complicated because I'm not sure how it grabs it or how to edit it, but I know where it comes from! In order to register your units and get updates etc, you need a Garmin account. So you first have to create a Garmin account. After that you use Garmin Express to down map updates, register a unit, activate your unit etc. In my case, it seems to have grabbed my email associated to my Garmin account and that is what it displays next to OWNER on the Echomap at the top left in Active Captain. I looked ALL OVER the place and I do not see anywhere that lets me edit that. Now, if you bought a used Garmin echomap and it's someone else's name showing up there, the old owner needs to remove it from their list of devices OR you may be able to reset it by doing a factory reset. I hope that helps, I apologize if that doesn't answer your question as well as you wanted.
Hi! Perfect video :). Is it recommended that my garmin bluechart card become active captain card? So, in this case I can use BC card for updates? Thanks
So this has come up a couple of times, I may make a video of this. If you bought a physical Garmin branded map card, then you should not be using that for updates or as your AC card. (It will format the card and erase everything on it) So you will definitely want to use a separate card for doing your updates data exports or for Active Captain connectivity. If you are downloading the maps with Garmin Express and creating your own map card, you can use that for AC, just create the AC card first then add the maps.
Great, informative video... 1 question though. Can you use the SD card that has the Active Captain loaded to it or do you use a separate SD card to load maps from Garmin Express. I have a 73sv and a 54cv and to save on Data charges from phone I'd like to use the Express for map and updates... Thanks
Awesome video. As a new boater and Garmin user, this was extremely helpful. My question has nothing to do with anything talked about in this video. I wanna know what the setup is that you have to run your Garmin inside lol. You have a battery and extra Garmin wire or something?
Great video! I don't know much about my echo map 73sv. I normally just turn it on and go with the auto settings. But I'm interested in learning more about how to use it. Can I look up to see if the lake is preloaded Without being at the lake? Thanks William
Dan do i just change the extension on the file or do i have to run the file thru a piece of software like GPS visualizer?? Thank your your videos are great keep them coming.
Hi Dennis, thanks so much for the nice comments and I definitely will do my best to keep the videos coming! So you need to actually load the .GPX file into the computer software called Humminbird PC. From there you can save it as the Humminbird file format. Then you can import that onto your units via an SD card. Hope that helps!
Great video. Quick question I bought a boat and the owner through in the Garmin UHD 74cv. I have tried registering the unit to my garmin account but it say registered to someone else. It's been a while since I bought it, looks like the previous owner switched phones. Any recommendations?
The unit would be registered via his email so he should be able to log in with his email and password and if he forgot his password he should be able to do a forget password retrieval with his email then he can log in and delete the unit from his account and then you should be able to add it to yours. Hope that helps!! 😊
@@DanRichardFishing Bad news is his wife is the one who set it up and can't remember log in info. Could be that, or they don't want to take the time to do it.
Hello Can you help me choose a fish finder? Is GARMIN ECHOMAP ULTRA 102sv + GT56UHD-TM TRANSDUCER or LOWRANCE Elite FS9 better? I use side sonar and traditional downscan Which one shows better in your opinion? Which one is better to buy? Can you advise me? I have been using Lowrance Elite 5 HDI for 10 years and now I want something newer and better
How often does Garmin update these maps? I just updated my unit for the first time today. Also Min size SD Card is now 8GB per Garmin website. Thanks for the video!
Hi Werner, thank you so much for the kind words and for the question! Unfortunately at this time, the Active Captain app doesn't support Helm functions with Echomap products, which is what is needed to display and record your sonar right on your phone or other mobile device. This only works with certain GPSMap models. Take care!
@@DanRichardFishing Do i have to buy the charts so that i can see it on my garmin plus 7sv? when i got it out of the box there were no maps and i having trouble so appreciate if you respond
Thanks Dan! Very useful content - one question, I haven't updated my Garmin Echomap Plus 73cv since purchasing it a couple of years ago. While watching the update process, is it normal to see the Software Update process go through many iterations of "Transferring..." to "Validating..." and back again? It looks like it's just transferring the same file over and over again and it's stuck in some infinite loop... Thank you!
Yes, it's definitely done that for me before especially if I'm way overdue for an update. Did it finally update or did it just keep doing it over and over again?
This is a great question! When you see all these different Echomaps with the same first number like 92SV, 93SV, 95SV etc they are the same units but with different pre-loaded maps. So a 92SV has the worldwide base maps, 93SV has the US inland lake maps and the 95sv has the Canadian lake maps. Hope that helps! :)
Liked channel. I bought a 2024 uhd sv93. It comes with US maps but I’m in Canada so I need to buy an SDcard with Canadian maps. Does this mean I can’t use active captain since my SD slot will be taken up with the maps card? Thanks
Thanks for the tip Trevor, yes you need to make sure any Garmin NMEA devices are also turned on if you want them to update. Honestly I've never had any NMEA goodies connected so I have no experience with it. I was thinking of installing it and hooking it up to the motor but it was so complicated and expensive for something I would probably barely use 😂
I'd go with an 8 gig card minimum, the updates can be about 1 gig and updated maps range and size the biggest one I've seen personally is about 2 GB but some are twice that size. The 32 gig cards are so cheap you might as well just get the maximum size if you can.
So that depends on what you want to do. If you bought a physical Garmin branded map card, then you should not be using that for updates or as your AC card. So you will definitely want to use a separate card for doing your updates data exports or for Active Captain connectivity. If you are downloading the maps with Garmin Express and creating your own map card, you can use that for AC.
Hi Rodney, the units do not have to be on if you want to update your ActiveCaptain app, but they do need to be on if you're updating the units via the app. Either way when they're networked when you power one on the other one powers on automatically.
Hi Michael, I simply have an extra power cable for the Garmin in my office with an inexpensive 12v alarm battery. I bring the unit and crdle in my office and just connect it to the cable and good to go! If your unit cradle is screwed in to your boat, you would also need to get yourself a spare cradle.
How did you hook up your fish finder to a battery at home I have my boat in the storage I did install my active captain at the storage but when am home I can’t do anything on ActiveCaptain
I have an extra power cord in my office with a small 12v alarm system battery I bought on Amazon for $25. I have my units mounted on Ram Mounts so they are easy to pull off the boat and just bring in to my office and plug it in :)
Hey great video! I noticed as I was watching the video that your phone said discontinued above your Echomap Plus 95sv , what's that mean because I have the same thing on my Echomap plus 94sv and on the plotter by the smart notifications I don't get the green check mark. So been trying to figure what this means. thanks for your help!!!
@@DanRichardFishing are they still doing updates for and thanks for answering question. I love your channel it really helps that you use some of the equipment that I do Thanks
If I have 2 of the ultra 106sv units networked I and i download the update will it automatically update both units and the lvs34 transducer at the same time? Or will you have to do each unit separately?
Having everything on the network makes it much easier, you only need one SD card in one of the units to install Active Captain and that will act as the master for your entire network. Once the app connects to the main unit it will see everything on your network and update everything at the same time! I'll be making a new video exactly on how to do that very soon, I'm almost done all of my spring renovating and will be back to doing videos :)
How do attach the battery to the garmin echo map chart plotter to use at home what kind of cables. I know I need a 12 v battery but I am unsure of what to buy so I can use it in my computer room at home by my computer thank you.
I detach the cradle from the ram mount and I have a small battery and extra power cable in the house :) You can see it in action here: th-cam.com/video/sWmyc8OtO4M/w-d-xo.html and there's links to the cable and stuff used in the description. Any small 12v battery will work :)
I don't have one specifically but I do get the question a lot! Basically I use a 12v alarm battery that cost me $25 from Amazon and I have an extra power cable. When I want to use it in the office, I just remove the cradle from the boat and bring it upstairs :)
That's a great question, I honestly don't know because I only have 1 unit installed on my boat with Wifi. However I will be adding more soon so I'll find out and do a video on it for sure! I would however assume that each unit requires it's own IP address, just like any other wifi device in your house.
Question: is there a way to merge the auto charting I’ve done on my two units? I have separate memory cards for each unit. They both have done recording at different times and was hoping that I could load the mapping I’ve done off each memory card to make one map. Is there any way that’s possible? Thanks for the informative videos, for me, they have been very helping in understanding and upgrading my units. Cheers
Hi Colt! I just want to clarify, are you referring to the QuickDraw maps that you create yourself? Unfortunately Garmin does not support merging separate QD files together :( The only suggestion I've seen is to upload your QuickDraw file to the community cloud and then download them to your card and it will add them, but then you've shared your maps with the entire world. Sorry I don't have a better solution on that one! I'm super happy to hear you like the videos and find them useful, I've got more one the way! Tight lines :)
@@DanRichardFishing hello. Another question; any idea why my SD card would save my contour files as a “bin” file and not the “svy” format? My sad is should be Formatted properly. It’s formatted to be a MS-DOT (Fat 32) file. I went to upload my QuickDraw contours and when doing so I was unable to upload my maps because the countour file is saved as a “bin” I thought I did it properly. Apparently not. I’m using a Mac book. Thank you
Hi there, I have definitely heard of this happening, are you trying create the Active Captain card? Make sure your card is no bigger than 32GB and that it's formatted using FAT32.
I purchased a navionics vision + sd card for $250. to install in my new uhd 74cv garmin. I'm in the Hawaiian islands. I had a super hard time getting it to work. I was thinking all I had to do was activate the vision+ card on active capt. It was not the case. Then downloading just my county of three islands killed my battery on my phone that is pretty new. So I finally down loaded on my computer it took four hours using garmin express. I've been seeing a lot of complaints about this issue. I'm guessing that even when you pay for a card that is supposed to be loaded with data of your choice it's blank. The older units you could just plug in the card and it worked perfectly. I have an old 1040 series garmin with the g3vision on a boat I skipper for work and its great. Kinda bummed on new garmin stuff. They should of made the unit connect direct to your wifi instead of the middle man device. Thanks for great information.
Dan, I have a EM uhd 93sv. I followed your video when I purchased it last November to get the most current update at that time 18.0 and everything went well. There has been 2 software versions since then and I'm now trying to update to the 20.0 version. When I open the Active Captain app it shows the head unit with the ID # and the current software version as 18.0. for some reason it will not recognize needing the update to 20.0 software. Any advise?
Hi Greg, I have not run in to this issue *yet* but I've definitely seen some people on the forums complaining about this exact issue. The only way they fixed it was by simply upgrading the old fashioned way with the SD Card :/ Maybe give Garmin a call and see if they have a better suggestion, they have great service - just don't call on a Monday, wait times are mental lol!
Hey Dan, can you do a Garmin video on "Rocks"? The chartplotter depth #s and rocks asterisks look almost the same. Is there a way to accentuate rocks or even eliminate depth #s?
I actually show it in a couple of videos, you can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/sWmyc8OtO4M/w-d-xo.html basically I have a small 12v AGM battery in my office for testing, and then I have a Garmin power cable with the alligator clips that I connect to the power cable and that just connects to the cradle. My cradle is on a RAM mount so it just pops off. Hope that helps :)
I saw your link for the SD card and i noticed they have a new generation sd card , which one do you get , the new generation sd card or the old generation one
How can you restore software back to factory and reinstall the update? Got a 93sv uhd and the sonar simulators are not working with the new update 19.10 . only the panoptix simulators work. Pop up message says missing simulator content! Or did they take it away? Or an issue with my update?
Wow you're the second person to mention this to me today! It looks like a lot of people are experiencing issues with this new update, I highly recommend you give Garmin customer service a call (they're really good) and let them know ASAP! Please let me know what they say if you can. By the way yes there is a way to downgrade the firmware on an Echomap, I need to try and find the instructions on how to do it. It's very risky though, you could brick the unit and then that unit is toast. You also void your warranty if it breaks from doing this. I've done it once and it worked fine. EDIT - Found it... support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=MtVQGKuPkXAjRpH9FhJ1u8
OK I see what's going on... you need to download the simulator and manual update for your unit to get the simulator working again: www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=7717
Hi Dennis, it should be fairly easy. You can export your waypoints as a GPX file and then open that file in Humminbird PC. From there you can export the waypoints as a .HWR file on an SD Card and when you put that in your HB unit, it should pull the waypoint file and import them. Hope that helps!
Hi Dan, New Sub here. I just got the echomap 126sv and have been trying to do the lake level offset. Is that not available on the 126sv and if it is could you consider doing a video on that. If you have already done a video on that could you refer it to me as I would love to check it out.
Hi Grey, thanks so much for the sub! For the Lake level adjust it definitely should be available BUT you must be on a lake for it to be enabled. So once you're on a body of water and the unit is on and has a GPS connection the often becomes available. So when you're on a map click on Menu > Layers > Water > Lake Level and you can adjust. I haven't done a video on it yet but that's how it works :) good idea though maybe I will add that to my list of topics, thanks! PS. Congrats on that beautiful unit!! 😍
@@DanRichardFishing Thanks sir! That explains it as I was under the roof of the boat dock where we are staying. You’re a genius sir. And thanks! I also picked up the Livescope and a second 126sv for the bow. Loving the Garmins. My only frustration is the Garmin Force. Though it is sooo much quieter and stronger than my Minn-Kota it tends to move me way back when I hit anchor lock, much more so then my minn-Kota. Luckily the Bass Tank showed me a way to by pass that so it is a bit better now. Thanks again and I like the way you tie the Alberto knot with your hand placement. Another great video and thanks as I use the Alberto for the same reasons but I feed the loops with my hands reversed from the way you do it. Your way is much better I think. Thanks again!!!
@@greyhunter9287 Wow you have a beautiful setup with some nice gear! For the Force trolling motor, yeah you probably need to tweak how to use it and get used to the new functionality, I personally have yet to play with it. By the way, if you want to mess with the depth adjustment just to see how it works, you can also access it by enabling the simulation mode on the unit and it will give you the option :) Yeah I've been tying the Alberto for many years and I try to find ways to tie knots as easy as possible because I do a lot of cold weather fishing and my fingers freeze very easily lol! Give it a shot and see :) All the best!
Oh by the way, these will not work with ANY included maps on the Echomaps, it only works with ULTRA maps, which are all supplemental. I might do a video on this just to clarify for everyone.
@@DanRichardFishing Thanks Dan and that video would be much appreciated! So it sounds like I am going to have to buy the Ultra Maps to get the lake level. Hopefully they don’t gouge you for those. The ones I bot for my old Humminbirds were pretty expensive.
I keep getting this message even though I have a memory card in there “no activecaptain memory card detected” I taking it and out it back in. Deleted the all and reinstalled again. I don’t know what to do. This is the same memory card I used when I originally updated the first time. I’ve only updated my equipment one time after I bought it. I have Garmin Echomap 93SV UHD and Livescope.
Watched a Garmin webinar on this last night. When you use Active Captain it registers the unit automatically. Also if you have 2 compatible or more Garmins networked together via an ethernet cable the other Garmins will update as well so you don't have to update the other units.
Ooo good to know, thanks for that feedback! Mine were already all set up, although again it will only automatically register UHD/Plus/Ultra. Poor Gen 1s and CHIRP all lonely in the corner with the rest of non WIFI old timers 😂
If you're doing it via the app, then you only need to have an SD Card in the Echomap and you can just leave it in there the entire time. If you are using your PC to update, then you'll need the SD Card.
You can definitely do that, but bear in mind as soon as you use the Active Captain app, you've registered the unit. This was a good trick before the active captain app was around but now it's getting less relevant as people start using the wifi and apps.
Question for you. Does the Active Captain support AIS? I cant see my targets on my ipad or phone once I connect to my Garmin Chartplotter? I see the targets on my Garmin but not my mobile devices. My guess, it does not show the targets on the mobile devices. Odd they wouldn't integrate it into the Echo series.
This is actually my number one complaint about the echomaap series, the active captain integration with mobile devices is horrible. So no this is not supported, and you also cannot do any kind of screen recording or screen mirroring. It really is the biggest weakness of this series of chartplotters.
@@DanRichardFishing sorry my original message should have said “can’t” not can. I just installed active cap. Now when I try going into simulator mode it’s says “simulator content missing, download the latest software” my software is completely up to date. Great timing on your video Dan. I have the same ECHOMAP and my ActiveCaptain is telling me that version 13.30 is ready to download. I’ve saved your video which will certainly help when I’m ready to download it.
Haha awesome! Good luck with your update an thanks so much for the comment! :)
Thank you so much now I understand I can buy the cable from Amazon and Cabelas has the 12v battery.
You're very welcome!
great video dude very helpful! love my garmins!
Awesome, glad to help!! I love them too!
If you have a recommendation or a link
it would be appreciated.

great video , i just bought a GPSMAP 1243XSV my vessel is out of the water for a while I want to register this new system to my Garmin express & active captain ,so what battery are u using to fire up the garmin in your work station, is it a 12v marine battery or a 18V lithium battery ,also the power cord to the system & red power & black groun wires to the battery correct ?
Thanks for the video very helpful
this is the most informative video on Garmin Echomap that I have found thank you so much.
It’s awesome! Just what I was looking for!!
great video helped me a lot, do you have a video explaining how to connect to garmin helm?
Thank you for this video. I am a new subscriber and have just purchased a new Echomap UHD74sv with the GT56UHD-TM transducer. So I'm not only new to your channel, but I'm new to Garmin marine electronics as well. My unit will arrive in 4 days, and I'm wondering how to provide power to the Garmin unit inside my house (vs. on my boat). I'm just trying to get ahead of the learning curve. Thanks again!
You can buy a spare power cord off Amazon.

@@rg2514 I bought an extra power cable fr Garmin sand for a little 12v rechargeable battery from Walmart. About 60 bucks to get up and running.
Well done!!! Great video
Thank you so much!!
Your voice sounds like Tony Roberts...cool videos.
Haha thank you Rico!
Can you get anchor drag and shallow water alarms on your phone through active captain?
@@DanRichardFishing yes that helps. Pointed my in the right direction. I appreciate your reply! Thanks and have a blessed day!
You're very welcome, you as well!
I have the same question lol
Great video! I don't know much about my echo map 73sv. I normally just turn it on and go with the auto settings. But I'm interested in learning more about how to use it. Can I look up to see if the lake is preloaded Without being at the lake?
Thanks William
Very informative
Thank you sir!
How do you hook up to a battery at your house
Dan do i just change the extension on the file or do i have to run the file thru a piece of software like GPS visualizer?? Thank your
your videos are great keep them coming.
Great content 👍🏼
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the help
Great video. Quick question I bought a boat and the owner through in the Garmin UHD 74cv. I have tried registering the unit to my garmin account but it say registered to someone else. It's been a while since I bought it, looks like the previous owner switched phones. Any recommendations?
The unit would be registered via his email so he should be able to log in with his email and password and if he forgot his password he should be able to do a forget password retrieval with his email then he can log in and delete the unit from his account and then you should be able to add it to yours. Hope that helps!! 😊

How often does Garmin update these maps? I just updated my unit for the first time today. Also Min size SD Card is now 8GB per Garmin website. Thanks for the video!
Great videos! What do you do if you have an Androiid 7 phone and it will not load Active Captain?
You'll have to use the manual upgrade method with a microSD card in that case.
Got the year membership for nevionics will it transfer to the garmin?
Jolly good show. 72sv plus can i show sonar on a phone in the boat?
Nice video, do the echomap plus 93sv have new color appearances, like the flood lights, aqua view the rusted .....I've already found that it doesn't
Hi there, do you mean the color palettes for the sonar views like sideview and downview?
I have echo 72sv, how are you powering it? Any adapters, I have to do it on board.
Hi Dan, i want to ask what is different garmin echomap plus 92SV and garmin echomap plus 95SV?
This is a great question! When you see all these different Echomaps with the same first number like 92SV, 93SV, 95SV etc they are the same units but with different pre-loaded maps. So a 92SV has the worldwide base maps, 93SV has the US inland lake maps and the 95sv has the Canadian lake maps. Hope that helps! :)
Liked channel. I bought a 2024 uhd sv93. It comes with US maps but I’m in Canada so I need to buy an SDcard with Canadian maps. Does this mean I can’t use active captain since my SD slot will be taken up with the maps card? Thanks
Dan, don't forget all your NEMA devices need to be turned ON during any upgrade.
Hello What typical card usage is when downloading maps and all fw? does for example 4/8/16 gb will be enough also?
I'd go with an 8 gig card minimum, the updates can be about 1 gig and updated maps range and size the biggest one I've seen personally is about 2 GB but some are twice that size. The 32 gig cards are so cheap you might as well just get the maximum size if you can.
So I just got my garmin machine and I was wondering if I need to add an additional active captain card or will the Florida Coastal card be fine
Thanks
When you're network to your bow and your console do both units have to be on if you're updating the app the captain app
Hi Rodney, the units do not have to be on if you want to update your ActiveCaptain app, but they do need to be on if you're updating the units via the app. Either way when they're networked when you power one on the other one powers on automatically.
How do I power up unit to update what plug or battery do I need to do the update like you did In my house?
Hi Michael, I simply have an extra power cable for the Garmin in my office with an inexpensive 12v alarm battery. I bring the unit and crdle in my office and just connect it to the cable and good to go! If your unit cradle is screwed in to your boat, you would also need to get yourself a spare cradle.
Do you have to do this method for each unit if you have multiple garmib units? I have 2- 126sv's new and ready to register after I install.
I got 4 garmin units going on to 4 different boats was wondering if you had any tips and tricks for connectivity between them
Hey great video!
That's a great question Greg, it means those models are discontinued and no longer sold. The current models are the UHD and Ultra models :)
Hi Dan , can you go fishing and use the echomap while it is in the processing of downloading?
Dan, how do you have the GARMIN unit powered, while working on it "inside" your home?
Dan could you show a video of how you hook up the garmin to the battery
Do you mean how I hook it up in my office when working on it?
Yes, I’d like to know also. I’ve been struggling to keep my pontoon powered on in my yard, while trying to learn to use it.
If I have 3 echomap ultra's can i register them at different times so it can be 3 years of updates/upgrades?
You can if you do all your updating etc manually. If you use the Active Captain app, they will all register automatically.
Do you have a video on how you power up your monitor when it’s not on your boat and you have it at home
I don't have one specifically but I do get the question a lot! Basically I use a 12v alarm battery that cost me $25 from Amazon and I have an extra power cable. When I want to use it in the office, I just remove the cradle from the boat and bring it upstairs :)
When you have two unit on the same boat do you use the same WIFI address for both devices or should they e separate addresses
That's a great question, I honestly don't know because I only have 1 unit installed on my boat with Wifi. However I will be adding more soon so I'll find out and do a video on it for sure! I would however assume that each unit requires it's own IP address, just like any other wifi device in your house.
I hooked both up with the same WIFI and it works fine, the only thing is you can only download while one of the two units is off.
Ok. Makes sense. Thanks for the reply.

Dan how do I convert my waypoints from my garmin to use on my hummingbird thank u.

For the Force trolling motor, yeah you probably need to tweak how to use it and get used to the new functionality, I personally have yet to play with it. By the way, if you want to mess with the depth adjustment just to see how it works, you can also access it by enabling the simulation mode on the unit and it will give you the option :)
Yeah I've been tying the Alberto for many years and I try to find ways to tie knots as easy as possible because I do a lot of cold weather fishing and my fingers freeze very easily lol! Give it a shot and see :)
All the best!
What do you do if you are buying the unit used and there is another owner on the unit?
I keep getting this message even though I have a memory card in there “no activecaptain memory card detected” I taking it and out it back in. Deleted the all and reinstalled again. I don’t know what to do. This is the same memory card I used when I originally updated the first time. I’ve only updated my equipment one time after I bought it. I have Garmin Echomap 93SV UHD and Livescope.
If you insert the SD Card in the unit and you tap on the ActiveCaptain menu, does it offer you to format it?
I do have a problem whit the Active Captain on my phone or tablet it will show the detail on the but if I zoom in they dessaper ?!
Hi Pascal, sorry I wasn't sure what you mean. Do you mean if you are looking at the maps on ActiveCaptain?
Watched a Garmin webinar on this last night. When you use Active Captain it registers the unit automatically. Also if you have 2 compatible or more Garmins networked together via an ethernet cable the other Garmins will update as well so you don't have to update the other units.
Ooo good to know, thanks for that feedback! Mine were already all set up, although again it will only automatically register UHD/Plus/Ultra. Poor Gen 1s and CHIRP all lonely in the corner with the rest of non WIFI old timers 😂
Awesome! Glad I read your comment. Going to be updating my 2 new UHD 95SV this afternoon.
I have the new Garmin networking cable also
@@bowdzbeaudoin5770 Nice, you get access to lots of nice perks once you have them networked!
It will work on garmin echomap 70s?
What size sd card is suggested?
My new android didnt come w sd card slot, do i need to do it via computer?
If you're doing it via the app, then you only need to have an SD Card in the Echomap and you can just leave it in there the entire time. If you are using your PC to update, then you'll need the SD Card.
So wait like 2-3 years before you register to get your 1 time free map upgrade?
@@DanRichardFishing thank you so much for answering. Bummer
Any idea why I can use simulator mode after installing active captain?
Hi Chris, sorry do you mean simulator mode and are you asking why you can or can't use it?
@@DanRichardFishing sorry my original message should have said “can’t” not can.
I just installed active cap. Now when I try going into simulator mode it’s says “simulator content missing, download the latest software” my software is completely up to date. If I clear that message and go into my sonar it’s a black screen that says “not available” spent a few hrs trying to figure it out but no luck. Any ideas ?
How to hook up the garming to the work station?
I have an extra powercord in my office and a small 12v alarm system battery that I connect it to.
