If your cpu is a Pentium or a Celeron, then you’re stuck with those options. If your cpu is at least an i3, then you can swap for an i5 or an i7. There is a security “feature” in Intel ME that shuts down the computer every 30 minutes if you upgrade from a Pentium/Celeron to a Core i processor.
Funny to be randomly landing on your channle again after like 4 years? Thanks boi for the intel on that motherboard, was kinda worried they might have soldered the CPU onto the motherboard socket.
Thanks Howdy! Very informative. I have the same model and have upgraded to 8gig and an ssd but it still bottoms out (/tops out depending on your perspective) on some apps/multi-tasking - as they say your only as fast as your slowest component, so thought I'd search to see if a CPU swap out is easy and your video is the first one I found and subsequently watched. and thanks to you I will go for it. Now it's 3 years since you posted this vid, would you recommend the pentium 2030m?
Thank you for commenting! I haven’t used my laptop in quite some time, but I let a family member use it for some PowerPoint presentations and video playback (very light workloads) and they haven’t had any complaints. As far as the 2030m goes, if you’re doing light work, and if you can afford it for $35 (cheapest current eBay price) I’d say it’s probably worth it. I personally find it very satisfying to work on electronics, and this swap is pretty easy and cheap, so the fun-factor helps justify the price for me. At this point, if you can spare 2-300 dollars I would look into the secondary market, either eBay or Facebook Marketplace for a better deal. If you need to do anything more than word, PowerPoint, or TH-cam playback the pentium is going to struggle. I remember it taking minutes to open certain programs I used for school. Whatever route you take, I hope it all works out for you! And thanks for watching! I know it was probably painful to sit through LOL

The installation would be the same. However, on my model the bios has a lockout coded in that will shut the system off after 30 minutes. I tried both an i5 and an i3 and they were both locked out. You just have to do some careful research about your particular bios and find the most powerful chip that is still comparable. For me that was unfortunately only a pentium.

As for if your bios will allow a specific cpu, you would just have to do a little googling.
