The 1962 Packers almost had a perfect season. The Pack beat Detroit 9-7 in a key game at New City Stadium, but on Thanksgiving Day the Lions handed Green Bay a 26-14 loss at Tiger Stadium. Bart Starr was sacked 12 times for 110 yards in losses.
I think I read about that Lions game that Alex Karras let QB Plum have it after the game because Plum threw the late interception which set up the Packers winning field goal.
The Lions felt that the Pack got lucky in the first game (they did) and were really pointing toward that rematch. They killed GB on Thanksgiving, for sure.
According to both Steve and Ed Sabol of NFL films, this and the 1975 Oakland v. Pittsburgh AFC Championship game were the most violent, brutal and physical games he ever witnessed. The battle between Sam Huff and Jim Taylor in this game was unreal.

You're correct about all the points you make. The negative flip side of this era of NFL was the blatant spearing, piling on, late hits and head shots to the QBs that went on.
The highlights here proved to me at least that Elijah Pitts was a better runner than Hornung. Pitts was quicker and definitely a 1000 yard rusher by talent alone. Hornung was a great team player, blocking, receiving, rushing in the red zone, besides the threat to pass, he was versatile, probably our best comparison in the modern game is Taysom Hill, but Pitts appears to have been a talent who was largely untapped. I wonder what could have been had Hornung been a successful quarterback or if he played Tight End where he probably was more suited.

Vincent T Lombardi was a victim of racism throughout his career. When he finally got his chance? He did EVERYTHING he could to erase racism in the NFL. Vincent T Lombardi is by far the greatest coach the NFL has ever experienced. And he was a PACKER. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE GREEN BAY PACKERS BECAUSE WE ARE A LITTLE CITY KICKING ASS. AND? I don't doubt that the NFL champion at this time would defeat the AFL champion, but to declare the NFL champion the world champion without an actual game between the respective champions is arrogant.
I read that the Packers could have easily beat the Bears worse in the first contest but Lombardi made it a point to not put a 50 spot on George Halas, out of mutual respect.
Divided team? No. There were a few players, like Jimmy Taylor, who were not overly popular on the team. But they became like family. Lombardi united them, which is different than “kept them together”
Why does every U.S. sporting comp call their winners World Champions? Obviously the NFL champs are the best, particularly as nobody else plays the friggin sport. But no other teams in the comp. Americans might reflect on how this sounds arrogant, dumb and insular to everyone else.
Because they are World Champions. There was no other football team better. Just the same as , for example, champions of the big Go tournamemts in China and Korea are called World Champion.

The offensive lines were much better during this period. Because they played together much longer then as opposed to today's players.

As I recall, back then the Packers played one home game every season in Milwaukee.

Anybody know the name of the narrator of the game footage? I know the intro was by Chris Schenkel.
His name was Jim Leaming. He did these before NFL FILMS. Worked out of Philadelphia from 1954-71. Passed away around 1991.
