    “Star Trek: The Next Generation” brought up the question if the android Data had rights as a sentient being in the episode ‘The Measure of a Man’. Data had to go on trial to prove he had rights and couldn’t be permanently disassembled against his will so copies of him could be made for mass production.

    16:25 - Dr. Nguyen basically says that the Three Laws of Robotics would need to be more detailed to be operative.
    Doctor Asimov never thought otherwise. That's why he wrote so many stories about the Three Laws of Robotics in the first place; virtually each one where a fudge factor might be involved. He understood the limitations of AI vis a vis his laws better than anyone. That's what the original set of stories comprising I, Robot (which the movie is nothing like) were all about.

    My thoughts:
    1) Miniaturization of a sufficient power system, in both maximum output and storage capacity, seems to be one of the key limitations of robots, exoskeletons and other advanced technological systems.
    2) The existence of "uncanny valley" has the terrifying implication that at some point in our evolutionary history, we had to beware of something that was almost, but not quite, human.
    3) If I recall correctly, at some point Asimov pointed out that robots might in fact harm humanity in general without breaking the first law by harming any _individual_ human.

    Im surprised he didn't say anything about in the 1st back to the future the fact Marty and Doc stand in the path of the oncoming car. In an experiment, you would not put yourself in harms way like that just incase the car doesn't actually disappear. Granted its a sci-fi movie so...and they needed them standing there for the awesome special effect of the fire between their legs. But since he is breaking down the movie and talked about Tony Starks experiment testing. Js

      people can't even drive regular cars that good now so I'm not too optimistic about if they could fly

    • @VoltisArt
      @VoltisArt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is where autonomy becomes not just useful, but critical. Driverless cars are learning how to drive. Autopilots let airliners cruise without fatiguing pilots, but don't yet take off or land. Smart cruise is already adding speed control without the car steering itself. Eventually we'll be able to trust a system with flying to the store or office and back. Heck, we won't even have to go to the store ourselves, but just send the "car" with an order.
      I like the idea of altitudes blocked out for particular directions. Low down for launching and orienting, with lots of sensors and networking to avoid collisions. Four layers above that, still using sensors for collision avoidance, all traffic is in a particular cardinal direction, depending on its height. We could go eight to include diagonals, but that might be a lot to ask of sensors, at least early on. This is similar to today's street traffic, but far less restricted. Breaking up the directions into non-intersecting layers helps avoid likely collisions, even with errors in the system. Up above all of this is for high-speed traffic like airlines and cargo, not restricted to direction and still directed by local and regional Air Traffic Control.

    22:58 so no one still know how to turn matter into energy?

    • @VoltisArt
      @VoltisArt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Already covered in the fission and fusion discussion. Changing one element into another, in either direction, releases a lot of energy. We don't, however, turn matter directly into energy. Burning matter also releases a fair bit, as well, but isn't sustainable enough to continue being a primary source of energy if we want to keep living on this planet.
      Your body also turns matter into energy, shortly after you eat.

      So would most of the people Spider-Man saves, (unless it's a plot point like Gwen Stacy or her father,) the cast of every Transformers movie, the whole Fast & Furious crew, all human members of the Avengers, most versions of Batman...
      That's why movies use stunt people and CGI. Actors are expensive when they go splat, and Rule of Cool says the heroes don't go splat when they fly into a wall...unless they're not wearing plot armor that day.
