  • OHMYGOD HEY! 👋
The biggest news in theatreland this week is that Ryan Murpy's film adaptation of THE PROM has finally been released on Netflix.
In previous videos I have talked about my opinions on the controversy surrounding James Corden's performance and have also candidly reacted to the film's soundtrack for the first time, BUT in today's new video I am finally bringing you my FULL review of the movie musical talking about the cast, the choreography, the cinematography, the LGBTQ+ representation and more!
Check it out and see if you agree!

Directed by Murphy, The Prom (out December 11 on Netflix) features Meryl Streep as Dee Dee Allen, Nicole Kidman as Angie Dickinson, Ariana DeBose as Alyssa Greene, Kerry Washington as Mrs. Greene, newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman as Emma, James Corden as Barry Glickman, Andrew Rannells as Trent Oliver, Keegan-Michael Key as Mr. Hawkins, and Kevin Chamberlin as Sheldon Saperstein.
Featuring a book by Beguelin and Bob Martin and a score by Beguelin and Sklar, the musical tells the story of an Indiana high schooler barred from bringing her girlfriend to the prom-and the group of eccentric Broadway folk who infiltrate the town in an earnest, misguided attempt to fight the injustice.

I hope you've enjoyed this video, if you'd like to see more of the Stagey content I'm making including exclusive musical previews, West End interviews and general theatrical madness, subscribe to my channel! ⬇️

really perfect recap/review - I also couldn't figure out why Jo Ellen Pellman insisted on smiling throughout the entire movie - that being said, I LOVED her vocals - thank goodness for the two As (Andrew and Ariana) giving the movie much needed Broadway love - I was also dizzy and WAY too much yellow - thx MJ

Honestly, I loved it. Unruly Heart was possibly the greatest piece of musical staging I have even seen, with Barry’s Going To Prom coming in close. I have never seen a director convey so perfectly the feelings of listening to a powerful song.

So seeing the movie on Netflix was my first time seeing or hearing The Prom at all, so I loved it! Then I watched what maaaaay have been a bootleg of the bway production, and I can see how the movie would have been somewhat of a disappointment had I seen the stage version first. I do think Jo Ellen had a lot of heart, but I do wish she had shown more vulnerability and less “putting on a good face” so we could have seen her grow into a happier and more confident woman. You are spot on about how the show is about the way the world SHOULD be. The whole thing is so easy for everyone. It is a lovely escape from the real world, but if there had been a bit more struggle and balance the happy ending would be better earned. But honestly, despite their inherent flaws, the movie and stage show are a joy from beginning to end! And I really appreciate that they’re telling this kind of story, sugar-coated though it may be. And maybe that sugar coating will help bring this story to a wider audience and maybe change some hearts and minds!

I had really similar feelings, I'm very glad I went into the movie blind. And personally, I found the escapist unreality really nice. If I'm honest I really don't want gritty realistic movie musicals (looking at you, Les Mis). I love it when musicals are allowed to take us to another level of reality of heightened emotion and occasionally questionable logic. But yeah, the smiling did bother me a bit. Also, I hated James Cordon every time he was on screen. But overall I loved the movie and will almost definitely watch it again!

I like that is not so realistic and that Emma is an optimistic person. There is enough drama and death in lgbt stories. We deserve a teen cute feelgood movie too lol

Completely agree with you about the cinematography. Camera movement can do a lot to enhance the energy of a number (Chicago is a great movie musical example), but I feel like a lot of bad movie musicals just add constant movement out of fear the audience will get bored, and as a result, the impact and meaning of the lyrics are lessened. Just Breathe and Alyssa Greene especially felt like they would've been stronger with longer shots focusing just on the character and what they're expressing rather than constantly feeling the need to switch settings.

I loved seeing the musical in the theater!! Was a bit disappointed by the movie though... I too did not understand why Emma smiled for almost the entire movie, it made her a little unrelatable in my opinion. In the stageproduction Emma was a kind and optimistic teen, but also struggled at times.
Also, I was kind of annoyed at some shots in the movie. How is it, that sometimes the person delivering a line (mostly in song) isn't even in the shot? The result of this is that you can't see the expression paired with the comment and it somehow becomes irrelevant.
I didn't hate the movie, but I do think that they messed up. The stageproduction was great and I really believe that the movie could've been just as good or maybe even better at telling the story.

I really like your review, though I am surprised to see all the comments being more positive towards the movie than you were. I personally agree with you and your opinion that it could have had more serious emotional beats. I think sure, lgbt stories don't always have to be dramatic and painful, we do deserve positive content as well but nuance and positivity are not mutually exclusive. I am also not sure if Ryan Murphy and the team behind this movie have pure intentions, seeing as the main cast are all straight and to me it does feel like Murphy frequently uses gayness as an aesthetic of sorts in the movies and shows he is involved in. But I'm not sure, I don't mean to make assumptions.
I was surprised to see that you are such a small channel and will definetely come back to watch more of your videos :)

YES I AGREE ABOUT THE SMILING! It drove me nuts.

  • @Elspth88
    @Elspth88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I can see we’re you’re coming from with a lot of this, but one piece I disagree with is the smiling. I felt like that was actually pretty authentic to the Midwestern experience. In my experience, we smile through it all. It’s about being polite, “nice”. It doesn’t mean you’re happy, it’s about being “presentable;” not rocking the boat. Especially since everyone is mad at her, that seems like what she might fall back on.
So I guess I found her pasting in a smile while singing sad songs to be very authentic to my experience. I can see how that could be confusing, because it seems to be a mismatch, or she’s okay with what’s happening (even though she’s not), but I think it was an intentional choice, especially since Ryan Murphy is a gay man who is original from the Midwest, (specifically, Indiana).

I was excited to watch the prom as soon as I saw the cast to be honest, big Meryl fan and overall, big fan of this movie! My favourite songs/performances are Love Thy Neighbor and It's Not About Me

When I first saw the movie on Netflix, I had never heard of it before, and I fell in love with it instantly. I thought it was perfectly done and have watched it many, many times.
I recently saw it live, and my mind was blown. It’s such a different experience, and a truly magical one at that. But I can’t say I liked one more than the other.
The general consensus about the movie is that the character of Barry should’ve actually been played by a gay man, not James Corden. And that’s fair. Having seen the play, I can see what a difference it makes. Love them both equally ❤

I know this video is old but I just recently finally watched the full film, and while I loved the additional development for Barry and Deedee, I dislike that it came at the expense of Emma and Alyssa's screen time, as well as other numbers being cut down. I even did the math and found if all the trimmed down songs (Dance with You, Acceptance Song, You Happened, Unruly Heart, It's Time to Dance) had been kept in full it would only have added about 5 minutes to the overall film.

And while I get the sentiment in your comments about the realism of scenes like Barry and his mom, the kids who bullied Emma, or Alyssa's mother, on the other hand, as a musical it's already left the realm of realism. This show in particular I think does have heavy emotional scenes but also has a sort of heartfelt whimsy to it. And even the last song expresses how this is the way things should be normally concerning inclusion and acceptance ("Build it now/Make people see/How the world/Could one day be")

I thought the film was OK with ' Unruly Heart' the standout moment. I've also seen it on Stage in Vancouver and the stage version was a cut above the film.
Unruly heart is just such a good song.

I had seen the play on here prior to seeing the film and honestly while I want to say I enjoyed the film, it lacked the heart of the original cast. Part of me had wished they had the original cast reprising their roles like what they did with Rent, albeit only two didn't reprise, still...not enough films reunite the casts from the shows in which they originated said roles. It is interesting though how James Corden is a straight male playing a gay role and Andrew Rennels is shown portraying a straight male even though he is gay. I've read things that Andrew would have been better as the other role. Given who originated the role one can understand that and you are right in mentioning Corden just wasn't right for said role. I wish they could do another version of this film and give it back that heart but sometimes we are stuck with the version made. And yes I know the current debate over sexuality and who should play what role, and, in the end it doesn't matter much to me cause a lot of straight actors have done service to playing lgbtq characters, still, there are some roles that would do better if done by someone who understands that life. Anyway sorry for this lengthy bit but your video was spot on.

I believe Emma's smiling is intentional. Her life sucks, everyone is mad at her, her parents disowned her and everything that could go wrong in her world, has. So all she can do is smile through it and try to be positive.
The over the top of flashiness and choreography was to make it fun and wait for it... unrealistic. Because musical films arent suppose to be realistic. I do agree with the cinematography comment though. Definitely wanted more wide shots of the finale number
Ryan stated that he wanted this film to be a fun distraction from the crazy real world we are living in today, so making it super flashy, colorful and over the top was the perfect way to do that. I do think some of your opinions have valid points to them I just personally dont agree with all of them. But to each their own, there's no such thing as a wrong opinion. :)

Well I saw The Prom in Atlanta two years before it landed on Broadway with most of the original leads. And then I saw it 3 times in New York including the closing performance, and I was severely disappointed with the movie adaptation!! I agree that the smiling Emma was cringe worthy, and the cinematography lost all the fun and exuberance of the choreography. And I absolutely hated some of the scene locations. This is supposed to be a small Indiana town with only one hotel. I grew up in a small Illinois town with no stoplights and only one hotel. So I know small town. And the stage version depicted it correctly. But the high school in the movie was NO small town high school, and Love Thy Neighbor was filmed at a multi level shopping mall. No small town with has that! I was stunned that that was supposed to be in small town America.

To me, it IS joyful to engage intellectually with things I love! I think MickeyJo was more than fair in his review and offered nuanced critiques, and balanced those with things he liked. I would not say he “shit on” the show at all! From what I’ve seen, his videos are all a delightful blend of humor, heart, and an incredible knowledge of musical theatre. Even the things he critiques he does his best to present both sides of the story, as well as finding things to like about almost everything. I hope you’ll give him another chance, but either way, I hope you have a nice holiday season ❤️
