  • OHMYGOD HEY!
    Since the release of the new movie adaptation of THE PROM on Netflix last Friday, theatre fans worldwide have been buzzing about the film, with conversation quickly turning to James Corden's casting and his controversial performance as a gay character, Barry.
    In today's video I find myself unusually coming to Corden's defence as I believe his performance in this film is not a personal failure of his but rather a symptom of a bigger hollywood problem - watch all the way to the end to find out just what I mean!

    As a disowned-as-a-teen gay, James's whole thing disappointed me most. Him not having the lived experience, as you said, was off-putting. The character also missed the mark for me because the movie played the "they kicked him out!" card and walked it back with "well, technically he left before they could." That made it a lot easier to forgive his mother in a 3 minute hallway conversation, I guess. It also continued the trope that gay comic reliefs don't get relationships in these types of things. I wish he had a husband back in NYC that he made cute phone calls to a couple times in the movie or something. That could have helped to round him out as a character and humanize him. I'm glad that Pellman and DeBose are queer at least, but their characters' relationship felt sidelined for the big name actors which goes against the whole "moral of the story." Bah. I love a good campy queer movie, but this just really missed the mark for me. Sad about it. You know what didn't though? You! Great find, insta-subscribe! :D

    It's just bad acting. 'Cam' in Modern Family has a similar character in terms of behaviour and manerisms and he does a great job, in my opinion.

  • @tylerlubinus3758

    My theory--the issue is that James Corden is more known as a public figure. He's more known for being himself on his talk show than he is for the characters he plays, but we don't know Eric Stonestreet the actor, we know Cam. So when we see James Corden on screen, we think, hey James, why are you saying you're gay, you're not gay. I had the same issue in Cats. He's not a cat, I know this because of his talk show.

    I think a huge part of the JC unbelivability was the age gap between him and Meyrl Streep - he simply isn't old enough to play "Broadway has been" he is closer in age to Emma so his casting seems wrong.

    I just wanted to add one other issue with James' performance and casting. His age. The role is for a man in his late 40's, early 50's. There is no way an actor in his 30's could ever play FDR opposite Meryl Streep character's age.

    Honestly, I have a bigger problem with Kidman’s casting. Though she rose to the challenge and gave a fantastic performance (as I feel Corden did), I feel it would have been better to cast someone like Patina Miller, an extremely skilled dancer who’s especially skilled in Fosse style jazz/zazz, who isn’t too big of a name.

They didn't cast the original mt Emma...but Jo Ellen Pellman didn't look younger which had to be because frankly as great as Ariana Debose ist - she looked too old for the part. Andrew Rannells whilst fantastic felt a little young to me as did James Corden (esp paired with Streep).

      I would absolutely champion this ordinarily, and I loved that this movie launched some careers by casting Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana Debose in their roles.
      Like I said in the video, I understand why they wanted a name for Barry because it subverts the actor's own celebrity in order to play a celebrity character, it also wasn't a widely known musical beforehand.

  • @ANightworkerslife

    Loved Prom and I am a James defender. And I am gay. And I am middle aged. The ONLY problem for me was the age. Dee Dee and Barry are supposed to be about the same age and their carreers has gone hand in hand for a long time. no matter how you do it, Meryl and James.. are not..
    James is not a bad actor, James is not a bad singer. I would like there to be a gay actor protraying the more difficult scenes but James did a great job in them. There has been a long time of online James-hating and I dont understand why.
    James has done a lot of gay-flirting through the years and is very much known for his love of musicals so for him stepping into to this character isn't farfetched. I would actually go as far as to argue who among the middleaged, straight highprofile men would DARE to? And, as you say, trying to find a middleaged gay open man in Hollywood.. that isnt easy, still.. but that says more of Hollywood than of James playing the character..
    Yes, we can argue that Ryan wanted high profile names to get the movie going but I guess ha actually could have kept Brooks from the original cast in order to flirt with the Broadway audience.
    And-- add to that , isnt Trent supposed to be about the same age as Dee Dee and Barry, and in that case, wasnt Andrew to young too? And Nicole.. did a great job but BeBe could have done it? Right? Very much known for Cheers and for Fosse.
    Some claim that the over the top, flamboyant gay man is a stereotype.. he is not. But i think we are more tired of that stereotype always showing up in movies and on stage.. but that is not the actors fault, it is the writers and producers.... bad imagination. And writing that part like that from the beginning was also lazy writing to get some cheap laughs. That was not Cordens choice for the character.
    You hit a note with one comment which, in all fairness, needs a platform and a discussion.. The over middle aged gay open men in Hollywood.. not only has been frowned upon for so many years but they arent there because of aids in the 80's.. and this made me really sad. How many of them do we miss today that could have played these parts, and brilliantly...

    I found your channel thanks to the coverage of ALW's Cinderella/Bad Cinderella. And I've loved making my way through your catalogue of videos.
    You give such thought insights into the plays you cover, and I just find it so enjoyable. I find in your videos that you're still a gracious critic, even if you may be talking about someone who is I'm going to politely say "not great". You have always been very supportive of crew and staff, and that is just wonderful. When I was studying journalism (in the U.S. nearly 20 years ago--yikes!), that wasn't really seen much among my peers in my classes. So, it's kind of refreshing.
    Now, I'm not fond of James Corden as an actor, so to hear there were objections or issues with his performance or casting in the part, well, I'm... The cynic in me is not surprised. But it was great to hear about WHY this casting is problematic within the LGTB community other than just "Corden is bad".

  • @ArrowOdenn
    @ArrowOdenn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I have a question. I think that lgtb+ roles should be performed by lgtb+ actors, but doesn't that open up a can of worms of people stating that heterosexual actors should play heterosexual roles? No one seemed to mind that openly gay actor Luke Evans played the hyper-straight Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, but it just feels wrong that a straight actor is cast in a queer role. Is it because when straight actors play queer roles they tend to lean towards stereotypes that can often be offensive, which queer actors don't do when playing straight roles?

    • @Athena963
      @Athena963 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For me, it is really a case that when a character is queer, it's such a big thing. Every single queer character in mainstream art is such a momentous occasion, whereas almost all characters are straight. It isn't that I don't think straight people should play queer roles, it's that queer actors are so often forced out of the mainstream, that to then say that straight actors should play them is a bit of a slap in the face.

    I started my knowledge of The Prom when I first saw the movie. The first time I just couldn't get passed James Corden's accent. But the music stuck with me and I've watched the movie at least 5 or 6 times. It wasn't until this summer when I saw a live production seeing how much of a difference it made having an actual gay character play Barry. I felt if they had just thrown this particular actor I saw into the movie is near perfect. A totally different experience for sure. Everyone in the show is great! Kerri Washington was so perfectly cast to me that the mom played by anyone just didn't have the same affect on me. The one age gap I don't get is Meryl Streep and Keegan Michael Key. As cute as they were as a couple, the age difference made it tricky to really get into the love story.
    I LOVE that you brought up Nina West. She just finished Hairspray on Broadway! However, Dee Dee has some powerhouse songs and I don't personally think that vocally Nina could do it. I lobe her so much though.

    Fairytale in New York is like... the only time the f slur doesnt bother me. My brain just kinda skims over it. I wouldnt be bothered if it were traded out for another line or word, but I wouldnt get up in arms hearing it played.
    Though, I will say, just because you're gay doesnt mean you have a lived experience for that role to have the authenticity you're talking about. The only media that has ever been similar to my experience is "Love, Simon" and a big part of that is not having a huge issue with homophobia and being rejected for my sexuality. That said, I grew up in a very abusive household, so I have experiences with familial rejection for other shallow, ignorant reasons that while not an exact copy, i feel would be similar enough to tap into those emotions and feelings to do a role like that with depth. What i'm saying, is that I think it's a problem that we label certain experiences as "gay experiences" that nobody could ever understand. I know for the longest time I felt a good deal of imposter syndrome for not suffering for my sexuality.... even though it was literally the one aspect of my life I didnt suffer in some way for. Someone may not have ever told me that I should just not be gay, or tell me they disown me for being gay, or tell me to kill myself for being gay... but I was definitely asked, "Why cant you just not be like you are? Be better like your brother. Your brother isnt some lazy, fat ass." I was definitely told, "Get the hell out of my house your worthless bitch and dont let me see you here again." Along with several looming threats of being dumped on the streets on a nightly basis for fourteen years. And this all came from my grandfather who, yes, did tell me that he hoped I killed myself. But he didnt know I was gay, and I didnt have the ability to figure myself out to realize it either. When I "came out" aka just started dating my girlfriend and let people figure it out for themselves, I was in a safer environment with people who didnt care who I was dating. Even when someone did use the f word, I was always pretty firm about not liking it and they always stopped. The time a guy implied I just needed therapy and a guy who could "satisfy" I went off about corrective rape and he sincerely apologized the next day. So, while my experience may not be the common or sensational one, it still exists. Having a gay person play a role like that doesnt guarantee they have experienced the same or similar experience their character has. We dont ask for straight actors to have had some sort of lived experience when playing their roles. I do think more gay people should be given the shot to play gay roles before it's just handed off to a straight person, I just dont think the lived experience argument is a good one when it relies on a stereotype.

    I know a lot will disagree but I personally did not see a problem with the movie or James's performance. I mean I'll admit, he wouldn't have been the first choice for me but I still enjoyed it. Also like you said, it's hard to think of other plus sized male celebs who can sing and act. I keep having John Goodman in my head but I don't think he'd be a good choice especially with his weight loss and might be too old and might not have the right vocal range. Oooh! Just thought of someone. There's a drag queen named Darcy Drollinger who has a youtube channel called SF Oasis and he's done quite a bit of plays. I think he could be fun to watch play Barry. I believe he sings from time to time. He's not that well known but I think he deserves more attention. I also keep thinking Harvey Fierstein but unless he can hide his raspy voice, he might not be able to pull it off. Anyways, maybe I need to watch the movie again but I personally didn't really see any big problems with James's performance. Maybe not perfect but nothing I really saw as a big problem.

      I'm all for representation, and I fully believe that trans characters should only be played by trans actors. However, when it comes to sexuality, making that restriction will destroy careers, not build them. If we're going to say that only gay actors can play gay characters then we also have to say only straight actors can play straight characters, and so on. Your sexuality must match your character's sexuality. Then what happens? Gay actors only have a handful of roles to play. Bi actors have even fewer. Ace? Sorry, no parts for you.
      We have a massive canon of works with primarily straight characters. In order to balance the scales, writers would have to stop writing straight characters altogether for hundreds of years.
      Restricting actors to playing their own sexuality only will only mean fewer roles for LGBTQ people, and that's not a solution to anything.

    Why does authenticity here matter, when acting is pretty much all about empathizing and portraying someone you're not? We've seen compelling performances of PTSD, mental illness, parents who've lost a child, couples who've gone through divorce... from actors who have not experienced these things. So I don't quite understand why in today's public discourse the "gay experience" is considered something that must be authentic, and cannot be "acted" by someone who is not gay. Are we suggesting that the gay experience is something more special compared to all the other experiences in human life that can be portrayed onscreen by anyone else? And if that is the argument... doesn't this idea of homosexuality's exclusiveness contradict the commonly agreed objective to normalize gay people and see them as people no different from any other members of humanity? Genuinely asking a question here.
    And just to address the topic of discussion, I'm normally not a big fan of James Corden's acting and TV personality (a bit loud and obnoxious not in a fun way) but I was surprised to find that I quite enjoy his performance in The Prom. I don't see how it's, as people put it, offensively stereotypical, considering a) the role is written to be flamboyant and b) let's be honest, The Prom is not a show/movie that considers nuance its priority. Also I've seen way more stereotypical, two-dimensional, over the top portrayals of gay characters out there (yup, speaking as an Asian, we have a lot of those in mainstream media). So I am feeling a little bit sorry for all the hate he's receiving for this movie that is less about his performance and much more about who he is (or rather, is not).

      To me, the entire part was way too much, and i actually had to skip forward onto the movie as i noticed my LGBTQ+ student association breaking (in a bad way) while the scene happened with his mother.

      The main issue here is the lack of realism but like is this the show for realism in a sense. Do feel good movies have to hav a sense of realism in them to make you feel things? Ryan Murphy expanded on that character to make him more grounded and more related to the main star after the Broadway foursome. I think majority of people know that it may take years to mend that wound. Maybe Murphy shouldn’t of even introduced it but I understand why he did.
      Plus I have no issue with Corden playing that character, he’s written specifically to be incredibly flamboyant and I honestly believe he put up a good fight when he starred with such big names in the business. Isn’t Streep’s character meant to overshadow the rest of the cast, she seems to me like the most narcissist one that it of them all.
      I mean I’d consider the supposed “enemy” incredibly one dimensional. We learn nothing from that side just how bad and homophobic they are. I have a feeling it falls into a us vs them kinda film and not necessarily pleased with that. That was my main issue with the film and to be honest I have the feeling the theatre production is the same.

    James Corden just seems to play everything as a joke and sometimes at the expense of his character- like Cam from modern family is often ridiculously camp but it's endearing and I might giggle at how dRaMaHHHtic or his sly jabs and side eye he is but he's also sincere and kind at other times- Corden's characters always feel slightly like a parody to me where every line is played for laughs- rather than a whole rounded person with aspects that are hilarious and that we might recognise as exagerations of people we know but more to them than surface level laughs.

    • @chad1986scmsc
      @chad1986scmsc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Why?, the very purpose of actors is to play a part(pretend to be someone else). No one seems to have an issue with actors portraying sports stars, serial killers, pilots, doctors, and lawyers, but by your logic they should be outraged because their not actually any of those things either. What your actually saying though, a long with a lot of other uninformed members of society, is it's okay to be anyone as long as it doesn't effect the gay community(granted hollywood went with stereo types(which exist for a reason) but it's hollywood we're talking about here, that's kind of par for the coarse). The hypocrisy these days is almost palpable, so it's okay to put certain people or orientations on a pedestal but not others, wow ignorance really must be bliss with that kind of logic.

    • @satinstudies3292
      @satinstudies3292 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      With that same logic then gay men or women can’t play straight people. Why confine someone’s career to their sexuality? Isn’t that exactly what we’re trying to escape from?

    I totally see where you're coming from with the authenticity explanation. However, in my personal opinion from seeing the film and the staged show - Barry isnt an authentic person himself in any way. Barry is literally every cliche gay man combined into one person. He is campy, flamboyant, stereotypical and very much a narcissist. I personally feel any actor (gay or straight) would have portrayed him exactly the way James did. Even his sentimental scenes I feel he did quite a good job. I think people are just way too picky and opinionated these days.
    Great video though! :)

    • @Phelie315
      @Phelie315 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think there's also a certain amount of bias when as an audience member you know the actor isn't really gay, then its harder to get into the illusion no matter how well they might play him. I don't think this would have been as much of an issue with an unknown straight actor either.

    • @carr0760
      @carr0760 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. The character is literally written that way. That's not the actor's fault.
      Personally, I hated the movie (hate the show too). I wasn't invested in a single character with the exception of one scene. And it was James Cordon. He had that emotional scene in the hotel room with Meryl Streep, and he totally got me. It was the single beat scene in the entire movie, and I remember commenting to my boyfriend that Cordon actually managed to out perform Meryl in that moment.
      That was the only redeeming moment in the entire movie for me.

      It's equally valid for other people not to have enjoyed it, the reasons I gave are also legitimate and to suggest anyone did so deliberately is a tad obnoxious.

    • @Phelie315
      @Phelie315 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I understand why people have this stance but if you implement this then you get dangerously close to asking everyone to disclose their sexuality for any casting, which I find questionable at best. This would be illegal for literally any other job (at least in my country), and for good reason, so it would be absolutely bonkers to implement this for actors. This is really only an issue for famous people because under normal circumstances watching a movie or play you as an audience member shouldn't be able to tell if the actor is really gay or not. If you can, then they're doing a bad job.

      Gay actor here and they do not ask for your orientation on audition forms, nor should they. Some people aren’t ready to come out and it’s not right to expect that of them. Also some of us don’t want to wind up pigeonholed. The amount of comments that I saw about Elliot Page saying his character on Umbrella Academy had to be gay because he was (this was pre transition) drove me crazy. He is an incredible actor and the fact that people couldn’t stop focusing solely on his sexuality was horrible.

    Okay, so I am like only one who truly likes James as Barry. I don’t find his portrait as offensive one or bad, quite the reverse. He shows so many emotions and struggles. And yes, I am gay myself. I find so much of me in his character.

  • @th3entrepreneur701
    @th3entrepreneur701 ปีที่แล้ว

    Separate the characters from the actors, simple. I understand his performance wasn’t great but if you linger on the background of an actor you find yourself trying to attach it to the character for no reason at all and you’ll find no value in anything you watch. Listen to the words, tone and story of the CHARACTER, not the ACTOR behind it. Easy.
