As a kid, if I'd worked hard at school and received good grades, I could hire out a John Wilson video on a Saturday evening. And then go fishing with mates on Sunday. Absolute bliss! Thank you, John.
Been over a year since I have been able to watch John Wilson as my father passed away and we used to watch these together. Two men who have been such a great part of my life, both now at rest. I miss you both and dad thanks for taking me fishing with you and enjoying the countryside and wildlife as well as the fishing, just as John appreciated it. Wish you were still here but I can now watch theses again with good memories, not just the loss of you both. Will always appreciate everything in life. Thanks and god bless
45 years ago I arrived in Norwich and stumbled upon his small tackle shop. He was essentially unknown to the general public at that time. I walked in and he was reading at the counter. I introduced myself and asked for some advice as to where to fish and so on. He never looked up, but pointed to a section of the counter and simply said "buy my book". 'Miserable sod' I thought to myself, but I did, it was invaluable, and although withing a few years i moved away, I still have it.
John used to say "That's a super fish, let's put it in the net!". My fishing partner and I used to fish the Thames in Windsor after work in the late 80s (when this aired) and every time we caught a Chub, Barbel or good Roach, we'd say the same thing. LOL. Good times...
Back in the 80's I used to hear the name 'Dick Walker' a lot. Never really meant a lot to me... but John Wilson... that was a different matter. I remember the press said JW captiviated the country with his infectious enthusiasm. Even my non-angling colleagues at that time used to watch the programme. He probably deserved an MBE for his contribution to angling at that time. Nobody has come close to capturing the enthusiasm for fishing and wildlife. I wished his nephew would be able to continue in John's footsteps but unfortunately Martin doesn't have the same charisma. Consequently, John is the legend that lives on. If you know, you know....
Grew up watching this LEGEND when I was a nipper and I’ve caught some great fish using his tactics!! GOD BLESS THERES ONLY ONE JOHNNY WILSON GOD BLESS RIP
R.I.P John I have very fond memories, watching you on 'Gone Fishing' as a child. You taught me so much and i was so excited to sit down and watch the series on tele.My passion for fishing is still so very strong and ive been sussesfull over the years.Thankyou for bringing this enjoyment to me. RIP you LEGEND.
Great footage, the location is the river Tiffey at Kimberly hall near Wymondham in Norfolk. I've fished the river for years and the fish in the river always have black spot, but seem healthy enough.
I remember going to the fishing show at the nec with my mate. We saw jw on his stand we shouted steady on wilson hello were in feels like a better fish. He came out his stand smiled shook our hands and laughed what a bloody nice bloke I'll never forget that day. R.i.p mr fishing 💔💔
He used to do my mum's hair in the late 70's.He was a ladies hairdresser-had a shop with his brother in Church Street ,Edmonton. We used to chat to him over the River Lee/Lea.Always had time for us kids.
Kevin Clark Dave Wilson was my barber in Waltham Abbey in the late 70’s, early 80’s. I was a kid but Dave used to give me a photo album of his and Johns big fish to keep my quiet!
@@Backs4more That's great.I used to play darts in Waltham Abbey for the White Lion, near the police station. We used to fish in the Lea,from Lea rd,next to The Old English Gentleman.Small world.
Kevin Clark grew up fishing the Lea. Dunlop’s bend was a favourite as well as up at Hooks Marsh. Used to buy maggots from P & B Hall in Waltham Abbey or Arnold’s Rods in Walthamcross :)
John got me interested in fishing from his programmes he was my mentor,my teacher,my ultimate hero, your so missed my friend, let’s hope there is a stretch of river ,a small pond,a lake, and a gravel pit up there in heaven,I met John at Diss lake I was speechless all I could say was thank you,he smiled and said and thank you for watching my fishing escapades he called them,he gave me his autograph, and took a selfie with me and my wife ,a great man, sadly missed RIP my Wilson
Can you imagine Graeme from TA Fishing doing this? Stomping about plonking his chair down, no landing net, clowning around, talking incessantly to the camera while playing a fish. This is how to fish properly Graeme, watch and learn!
If youre going to target anyone to try and get thumbsups , you asshole, Graeme Pullen is a very bad choice, he has done a lot for people getting into fishing in recent years, just as this guy did in his time, pre internet. like many people new to fishing in the last few years, I have found Graeme and Mike Pullen on youtube have been a fantastic source of knowledge and inspiration to improve, and learn, to young and new fishermen. get a grip you fucking tosser !!
@@wonkylommiter6364 Haha, someone got triggered on poor old Graeme's behalf didn't they? Calm down sunshine! I don't give a fuck about likes and that's not why I made that comment. It was because I've seen several TA Fishing videos where Graeme behaves very irresponsibly and is setting a bad example to youngsters and novices alike. Now wind your neck in and fuck off! ( btw, what are " thumbsups " lmao )
@alanrtment porter Evidence??? Watch some of his TA ( Totally Amateurish ) videos if you want evidence! Chav?? You think everyone who swears is a chav?? Well the person who replied to me swore, so maybe you think he's a chav too? Get a grip mate!
R.i.p John you are surely missed by all of us who watched you religiously as kids I learned so much from you so did my dad I hope you up there fishing the golden rivers for big roach god bless John Wilson always a Legend ❤️🙏🏻🎣
Lovely video from a man who seems to have earned much respect. Can someone help me out here ? Why did he say that if you make vibrations approaching the edge that the days fish are gone when he can dip the net multiple times in the stream to net a splashing fish and everything is still ok ?
When he's catching them, he is constantly feeding the swim, or keeping bait going into the stream. This keeps the fish interested and he will attempt to remove fish quickly with minimum disturbance. Hes saying that if he disturbs the swim before hes even fishing hes got no chance all day.
Still have this on VHS, it was these earlier JW productions that got me hooked as a kid. I find modern fishing productions totally inferior. Lots of TH-camrs putting out fishing content they make and that they think is great, but its actually really naff compared.

A born presenter....I could listen to him for hours and I've only been fishing 3 times in 46 years. What an intelligent and wonderful person.
when fish were fish took years to get two 2lb plus not like to day . this was the best angling series on tv

Sheer, unadulterated, simple pleasure. Wonderful.

Proper fishing. Today’s complicated rigs/baits/setups are ridiculous
Totally agree. Keep it simple so much more fun. The fish dont give a damn if you are using a 30 pound rod and reel or a 1000 pound plus.
JW's approach was based on understanding the fish and knowing about their habitat. No need for gimmicks. This is proper fishing.
I can remember seeing this series when it first aired, it a very “inclusive” programme as John’s commentary always seemed to be very personal
trout jump at 3.20 don't think John noticed ....
It's because of John Wilson that I creep up on small streams!
RIP John 😢
Wonderful....
Catapult for 4 foot throw!!! Come on John !!!
Classic
Im a traditional fisherman so much more fun
love the video but to much talking
