In high school, our track and field coach was well-known for his garlic oil he made at home. When I joined the team, he made it clear that we would have bi-weekly foot checks to prevent the spread of athlete's foot. A friend if mine developed a bit of athlete's foot and to my surprise, he grabbed a bottle of garlic oil and rubbed it all over her feet (especially her toes), wrapped her feet in gauze, and gave her a fresh pair of socks and these stretchy rubbery shoes. He gave her the rest of the bottle of oil and gave her instrictions about it amd cleared her to take 3 days off practice. I never knew what that was all about... until now.
1. Prunes for constipation 2. Oatmeal for dryskin 3. Ginger for morning sickness 4. Garlic for athletes foot 5. Soy for hot flashes 6. Lemongrass for cold sores
Prunes are also one of the most antioxidant fruits you can eat. MY GRAM ate prunes everyday and she lived to be 101, well shy a month. She died earlier than she would have due to heart break over her 70 yr old son passing away suddenly.
Unfortunately the ginger didn’t help me at all with morning sickness which shocked me because it usually works pretty well. I accidentally found out that mango slices (after I couldn’t eat anything all day and fruit sounded decent that night) worked great at getting rid of the nausea and stomach cramps I had that day/week. I googled it after I discovered this and apparently it works for other people as well!
Ginger is indeed good for combatting nausea - and also dizziness, and poor circulation. 🙂👍 Ginger and lemon tea is a good diuretic. But the best thing against dizziness is in my experience, the herbal supplement Gingko biloba. It's all about blood flow; and the latter opens up small capillaries. Marijuana is also supposed to be good against nausea, and promotes appetite. 🙂
Medical doctor from Brazil here. One I would add, very effective for skin ulcers, is sugar(the same you use on coffee) applied on the skin under the bandages, even for diabetics (the ammount that is absorbed is neglegible compared to the rise in glicemic levels because of the cortisol released due to the body fighting the bacteria on the ulcer). Great show, approved, I prescribe some of them to my low income patients. Edit: it acts like sault, but without the damage sault would make
Med student from France here. How does it help the healing process ? Sugar can't feed the skin cells but it will feed the bacterias. Doesn't it lead to more infection ?
@LagiNaLangAko23 it does indeed make wound area drier through its hygroscopic action, making g it too dry for bacteria to survive, let alone proliferate. Actually, honey is eve better because it contains moderate amounts of glutonic acid and peroxide, which are disinfectants
I finally couldn't stand my "all the time sickness" when I was pregnant, so I called a nurseline to see what I could do, not wanting to take medication. She suggested peppermint tea. Ever since then, whenever my stomach's upset, I just use something with peppermint and it works. Maybe it's partly psychological, but ever since including peppermint in my diet while pregnant, I've loved it. Only had the "sickness" for the first trimester, thank goodness.
There is morning sickness that can be coped with to varying degrees at home but some mothers cannot even keep down water and without hospitalisation and iv fluids can die from dehydration. I have nursed women on this state. So if your vomiting is bad e.g. all day get medical advice.
@@LostRoswellian ginger and chocolate and fizzy drinks are also good for travel sickness. Great excuse to buy some crystallised ginger in dark dark chocolate. Also chocolate and say a fizzy drink are the last things most parents would think suitable for a nauseous child in the car but turns out we can be wrong.
Sadly my friend died in November from complications from constipation. He was constipated enough to warrant emergency surgery. However, he got an infection post surgery (very common with intestinal surgeries) and passed away a few days later. I'm still heartbroken over his death. So please, if you're constipated see a dr sooner rather than later. It might save your life to do so.
Wow, I'm sorry for your loss! And yes, if your bowels aren't working correctly, either direction, it's not good. And infection from abdominal surgery is pretty common, especially if there's fecal matter involved.
More than 3 days without going to the bathroom is very dangerous, please seek immediate medical help, most likely an enema, uncomfortable but it will probably save your life
My parents used oatmeal baths (we purchased the Aveno packets-not sure if they are still a thing) to help me when I had chicken pox. It was the thing that helped the itchiness more than anything else we did.
Take the NyQuil challenge: try to finish the bottle before passing out. If you finish the bottle, you are a winner! If you wake and still have some left, you are a winner! Some tooth pain simply cannot be touched but going to sleep and not feeling it, well that counts in my book.
Can confirm : "morning sickness" is absolutely not confined to mornings! My worst nausea was during the evening especially if I was tired. And candied ginger or ginger tea were my best solution to reduce it.
I didn't try it specifically for a cold sore but I accidentally got a drop of lemongrass oil on my lip once. That s**t burns!! Like with most oils, they need to be used with a carrier oil or they can be really intense on the skin. Just thought I'd mention that since lips are pretty sensitive.
In the last few years, my stomach has decided to hate me and routinely hits me with bouts of nausea and vomiting. Doctors don’t know why and can’t give a diagnosis. Ginger has been a lifesaver though. During the worst bouts, I survive on ginger tea (just steeped fresh ginger root) and rice pablum.
I had a similar issue. It turned out to be celiac disease but in the mean time I found peppermint oil capsules very helpful. Hope you feel better soon.
Have the doctors looked into mold exposure or a severe inner ear issue? A friend of mine has been going through a similar issue for the last 3 years. If you sort yours out I’d love to pass on who and how, it might help her a lot.
Yikes, that's really irritating. I had nausea problems for some years and couldn't be diagnosed 'til I went to the Mayo Clinic after 2 years of no answers. It turns out my colon doesn't work for beans (literally) and I still live with the nausea but at least I'm not slowly starving to death like I was. I recommend seeing if you can seek second opinions if your current doctors aren't cutting the mustard. Good doctors can think outside of the box but also can admit that they don't know everything and may need to refer you to someone else if they can't help you anymore. That was my biggest issue before my diagnosis, they were sure I just needed a psychiatrist and that I wasn't actually sick. Turns out, I was, they were just too arrogant to admit it. B) Don't be afraid to look for help from other clinics, even if you have to drive a little bit to get to them. I certainly hope they can diagnose and treat you soon!
@@jennifergaulden1913 stop selling lies. There's no magical way to turn a person HIV negative once they have HIV. There ARE meds that keep the viral load low enough to not spread the disease to your loved one(s), but there. Is. No. Cure.
I just wanted to say how much I deeply appreciate the nongendered language for anatomy in this video and almost any video you do Hank Green! Thank you!
Love if you could look into following home treatments. 1. Turmeric powder for small cuts & bruises. Stops bleeding and promotes healing as a topical application. 2. Crushed ginger in honey for sore throats & coughs. 3. Raw Garlic for excessive flatulence & even acidity. 4. Plain flour for domestic burns.
That shot at the US healthcare system tho. I'd say call the burn ward, but it can't even cover itself for burning from that roast. Edit: (How the f*** did I get this many likes!?!)
Eh, it'd burn if it were true but you can look at data that proves it's not, also Canada has huge lines at clinics and hospitals, if our system is so bad why don't we have stupid long lines at ours? Short answer, it isn't.
US: High cost and/or no insurance means shorter lines. Canada: Free or low cost mean longer lines. So it's a trade off and a question of social ethics which system you prefer. Canadians and Americans just place different values on how they care for their fellow citizens.
There aren't lines at clinics and hospitals in Canada. The lines are for specialists that can take up to 4 weeks to be seen. Specialists in the US can take up to 11 weeks to be seen though. If comparing apples to apples, we see that the US has wait times that are almost 3 times longer than Canada's.
crystallized (candied) ginger has a nice bonus. it's _really_ tasty! just be sure to consume in moderation -- it also bears a curious heat sensation that can get overwhelming if one has too much of the stuff. this is one super cool video, y'all. things like this are why I am very happy to be a subscriber to the SciShow channels! please, keep up the great work!
I like candied ginger when I have a rare sweet tooth! Due to the heat factor, I don't have to worry about eating too much as I might w/ candy or cookies!
For Burns on the Skin I have used Lavender Oil. It takes away the Pain within minutes and you are able to touch the damaged area with out pain shortly after, too. I tried Aloe but it wasn’t as effective as the Lavender for me.
My top natural home remedy ingredients: 1. Apple Cidar Vinegar. If you can stand the smell, it’s one of the best disinfectants especially on your body. Compares nothing to garlic with athletes foot- soak your feet in it for 20minutes once, and it’s gone- and will kill some of most stubborn foot issues (take it from someone who was on swim teams for years and has her fair share of locker room foot issues). Also put a cup or two in a bath and it will kill off a moderate UTI or yeast infection while moisturizing the skin). It also great as a gentle cleaner (you don’t need to worry about a pet or whatever). I’m sure there are other uses but these are the ones I know of. There have been times when a doctor has prescribed me something and ACV worked better. But then again it depends. Also for oral hygiene (like fights ulcers and thrush) but if you’re like me and can’t stomach that there’s other options which brings me to my next ingredient. 2. Coconut oil I first started using it when I kept getting thrush due to my bad immune system. Whenever I feel it coming on, I take one or two pills of coconut oil- and it works. It doesn’t always fight it off alone, but it definitely always helps being taken internal. It also helps as a mouth wash- but I prefer the pills. Coconut oil as mouth wash will as a bonus really whiten your teeth (better than any whitening toothpaste I have used). It has the similar disinfectant properties as ACV but not as intense. It is also rumored to help with skin cancer- whether that’s true or not, it is a great moisturizer full of vitamin E. I use it as make remover (best one even for waterproof make up- never buying make up remover again), eye lash conditioner (when I take my make up, I’m helping my lashes at the same time), chapstick (although it is best paired with something that makes it thicker because it basically becomes a liquid once it melts to your body heat- like aloe Vera or your choice of chapstick/cream). It is known to help with hair especially high porosity hair (typically curly/hair that requires lots of moisture), but it can easily build up with the wrong hair type and get stuck in the cuticle- it’s not great for protein sensitive hair (typically straight snappy hair). So I take caution using it but since it doesn’t exactly hurt my hair type, I don’t flinch at it in my ingredients list (but argon oil is superior when it comes to hair). I also use it as shaving cream. I have really sensitive skin- and the only thing I have not tried is using yogurt. Coconut oil is the only thing that really significantly has helped me not get razor burn ever time I shave. (That and buying Gillette razors instead of Venus razors that have a numbing agents to make you think you can closer to the skin- I couldn’t feel where I giving myself razor burn especially since I like a close shave but not cut my skin close Venus!). 3. Baking soda: Honestly I know there are thousands upon thousands of ways to use this stuff. And it’s sort of sad since I only use it for a few things- I need to learn more ways. Basically anything you need odor control in, baking soda can help. Cat litter, washing dishes, etc. It’s great, it absorbs the smell and doesn’t mask it. That’s why I will put a packet of it in the back of my dresser drawers- you know how folded up clothes left alone long enough can have that weird smell? Baking soda paired with a sent of your choosing (I find lavender and mint to be the strongest) can help reduce that. Basically bacteria still builds up over time with folded clean clothes causing that smell - so honestly tho- if they really smell funky- just wash them. Another thing I have found helps prevent this smell is going on strike from fabric softeners. It also really helps reduce skin irritation (I seriously didn’t know that it made me slightly itchy until I stopped using it for a good few months and then my mom did my laundry for me once and used it). But fabric softener helps clothes smell good...and do you know what is an amazing replacement? Baking soda. It can damage the inner piping of your washer over years of use, so instead of putting where the fabric soften would go, I have learned to know when my laundry goes into the rinse cycle set a timer, and I just pause it, open it, and sprinkle 1/4-1/2 a cup of baking soda on the clothes. Gets rid of the smell of once dirty clothes just like fabric softener- your clothes will last longer too because fabric softener can degrade them more over time. Plus moisture wicking clothes aren’t supposed to have fabric softener on them, so you don’t have to worry about that. It also makes your towels last longer (“rougher”= more wet absorbing). This is because fabric softener is basically like putting conditioner on your clothes- it costs the fibers, but then it never washes off and builds up over time- hence athletic wear doesn’t like it since it ruins their breathability over time. This build up is also why fabric softener helps that sitting smell come on faster in clothes- because you’re sort of trapping whatever the wash didn’t get- and it won’t get everything every time- into your clothes- ew. I add lavender essential oil in. I don’t necessarily believe in essential oils and all their hype, but boy are their smells strong- gets the job done with just a 2-6 drops out in either the fabric softener section, when you dump the baking soda, or even in the dryer. I haven’t let go of dryer sheets tho- taking it one step at times until I reach my limit of functional vs natural. It is also meh for dry shampoo if you are that desperate with no dry shampoo especially if you’re blonde. But honestly the hassle is just as much if you’d just quickly take a 20 min shower. Especially if you have brown or darker hair and it shows (no Cocoa powder DOES NOT WORK- it will make you so itchy). Just buy good dry shampoo or wash your hair. 4. Aloe Vera: I say this because it’s an obvious one and I honestly use it just the way my mom has taught me, and have yet to really start diving into ways for things it can replace in my life that I want it to. Basically it’s great for skin- duh. For sunburns, nothing beats it other than solarcaine (which literally has it as one of its main ingredients along with numbing agents). Just like solarcaine it can also help with very slight burns- doesn’t have to be from the sun. It also can help prevent and sort of dull some scars. It’s a succulent that holds water in the desert so of course it’s great as a moisturizer (why are almost all my list moisturizers? Lol). It’s great for curly hair as a leave in conditioner or anti frizz ingredient. It’s great for chapped lips just like coconut oil which is what I often pair it with. It also helps prevent scabs from getting really dry- it has some wound healing properties - and at the very least soothes wounds a bit but for really bad wounds- refer to medical help/medical grade products- duh. It’s been known to increase collagen levels. 5. Peppermint oil: if you want to trade the carcinogenic Deet for something more natural, peppermint is it. It repels spiders and bugs- but of course deet and other products are more efficient at it until...the worst of all bugs I swear. Sand fleas/no-see-ums arrive. If you’re at a beach with these bugs from hell- they are too small to see but you can feel them. They get get through most bug meshes unless you get best uniquely designed for them. So if you’re camping on a beach with them- they come out at night- there’s not escape. And deet? Ahaha. Most bug sprays ATTRACT them. Why. Why. They lay eggs in your skin, and their bites form the itchiest red pimple spots- biting with no hold back. I camp yearly at a beach that has them (I don’t know why tbh the bugs make it hell but if you ignore that it’s the best time of my year). So I became determined to avoid them. There were only 3 ways I saw people avoid them. 1. They never got bitten by bugs in the first place- they’re just a certain blood type that they don’t like (I am the type they love)- even then they got a few bites but not much compare to everyone else covered in red welts everyone on their body. 2. They had been taking garlic pills or some medication that messed with their body’s natural scent. Who knew garlic repelled all blood suckers? I guess that’s where the superstition is from. This worked the best they almost had no bites at all. 3. Peppermint. Someone brought a home made concoction their mom made and it worked like a charm. They said peppermint was the main ingredient. Someone thankfully also had peppermint essential oil with them. And it also worked. Case solved. When camping in the woods though, nothing beats deet. I’ll take a slight increase in my chances of cancer over an assurance that I won’t get like disease or rockey mountain fever and all the nasty disease you could get from a tick bite. Not thanks. Functional over natural for this one. But for the beach? Break out that peppermint oil- consider eating lots of garlic, and get that tan. That’s it for now on the top of my head. I’m always on the hunt for other home remedy ingredient useful to me.
My parents used everything mentioned, except the soy, when we were kids. I still use prunes and ginger. Two others work very well. A small amount of dry cocoa (start with 1/16-1/8 teaspoon) will help combat diarrhea (be careful, too much and you'll be reaching for the prunes). Ask me how I know. ;-) Oregano oil really does kill nail fungus (3x per day until a month after the nail has completely grown out). I tried the oregano oil in desperation when OTC and 2 courses of prescriptions from a podiatrist did not work for me. Some folks are sensitive to the oil, though, so read up and patch test first.
I keep a small bottle, which used to contain vanilla extract, full of lemon balm leaves chopped up in witch hazel. At that tingling in the lip which is the first sign of a cold sore, I dab the mixture on with a Q-tip, and it stops the cold sore dead in it's tracks. The blister never develops. Also, a few years ago I got canker sores on my gums, for the first time in my life. My South Asian dentist said to put yoghurt on them. So I got some plain yoghurt, dipped a cotton ball in it, then laid it against the lesions, and left it, between my cheek and my gum. I did this a couple of times a day, and by the second day, I was cured.
I have an inner ear problem which increases the likelihood of me getting motion sickness. Ginger works great as a preventative to take before getting into the car with someone else driving. But taking it after I am already feeling sick only results in ginger flavored vomit. (For me, at least)
I know you said acyclovir is expensive but maybe that’s only in the US. In the UK you can buy acyclovir tablets for as little as £12.99 and you can buy topical acyclovir creams for as little as £2. Super affordable
Having suffered with cold sores for 50 some years, here's the best thing I've found. The second you feel that tell-tell tingle, put a little table salt in the palm of your hand. Lick the end of your index finger and dip it into the salt. Take your salt-coated finder and PRESS, don't rub, it into the tingle. Most of the time the cold sore will not develop. If it does, the blister has tiny holes so it doesn't swell.
@@jeanniegray2183 Toothpaste and perfume as I was also told never done anything for my cold sores alot of times Toothpaste made the sore wet and took a longer time to dry and leave the lip.. just my opinion)I will 100% try lemongrass next
Wow, the early 2021 freeze in Southeast Texas that had not happened since 1989 somehow made feral fennel plants go insane. Seriously, when I walk on the trail in the flood reserve zone it sometimes smells like rye bread in the hot sun. I never heard fennel was medicine, but when I told a couple of South Asian friends there was wild fennel growing nearby They seemed really interested.
Nah, most food is stored by the body or used to build parts of the body and then eventually is turned into CO2 and H20, which you then exhale (or pee in the case of H20). When you lose weight, pretty much all that weight was actually breathed out of your body. Poop is just the stuff your body can't absorb like fibers and other odd compounds.
Coconut oil is great for helping prevent irritation from essential oils in my experience. But also make sure to test a small diluted amount on your arm and wait a while to see if you have a bad reaction BEFORE it ever comes near your face
Lemon Thyme works on cold sores, inside mouth sores, and tooth pain. Use it like you would chew. It's easy to grow; it smells amazing, too! I'm guessing since both of those have lemon scents, maybe lemon itself would also work?
I've been sailing around on boats for a lot of my life, and we always have candied ginger, ginger chews, or ginger tea available for those who get seasick.

one of the best parts of SCIshow is that the spokespeople actually pronounce the words right. Something that most You Tube shows have mechanical voices or people who have no idea what they are saying and they mispronounce so many of the words

I use peppermint oil in 91% alcohol. The alcohol breaks it down small enough to use a standard spray bottle, like a travel size, to apply where it's wanted or needed. Tried CBD oil for joint pain, but lucky me, it didn't work. Happily, the seller took it back for a full refund. I'd done research on oils years ago to mix up a roach repellent I could handle, as most insect repellents make it hard for me to breathe even hours later when they use "safe" ones. Peppermint oil has a lot of positive properties, including easing pain, being an antiseptic, antibiotic, and repelling many insects. After CBD failed me, I tried pure peppermint oil on my knee. Couldn't hurt. Slipped and fell on metal grid flooring (decades ago), and my knee 3 years back hurt so bad, a slight jarring of my leg sent daggers of pain shooting through my knee. The mint oil works for me. And it's far cheaper than CBD oil. I can now kick a wall hard with my bad leg, and as long as I'm wearing good shoes, it doesn't hurt at all. Took a few weeks of full strength peppermint oil application, less than a month, before I noticed it taking effect. Jarring my knee or leg no longer causes me pain. I still apply the spray daily, but as a preventative to ward off the pain that would return if I stopped. (shrugs) A few drops of cinnamon oil adds strength to this, but too much will make your skin rashy or burn you. Doesn't bother my knee, but my achy wrist turns red. I, too, would love a part 2 on this topic! I don't use it on burns.
The ancient Egyptians regularly used garlic and/or honey to treat infections. In fact, the first known worker's strike was because tomb builders weren't getting their daily ration of garlic and their beer ration was being watered down. Some things don't change.

A book that won the Booker Prize, “Sacred Hunger,” opens with a vivid scene of sea sickness as symbolic of how desperately people can suffer. Ginger didn’t help him at all. But then, the only time I felt physically and emotionally perfect was when I was pregnant.
LOL ikr. That's the sad truth of America. They all think they're the greatest but when it comes right down to it. The American healthcare system is a sad, silly joke. The entire developed "western" world shows it up on virtually every level. Most important affordability and availability.
I also don't understand this view healthcare might be expensive but it's their to pay doctors pay patients the workers that make the medicine and its goes in to research for cheaper and better medicine its not like all the time spent looking for cancer cures has been payed buy kind souls or tax money and probably don't want the government to control who gets life saving care when most people that can't afford it also don't pay taxes

I’ve had Miso soup stop cold sores dead. It shocked me, but it keeps working and it’s saved me more than once when I did not have access to my Valtrex. I just wanted to share that information in case it helps anyone or inspires future scientific research.
Vegemite is pretty good on cold sores: It has B group vitamins and is very saline and tastes better than cold sore cream if you lick your lips accidentally.
I find it interesting that 4/6 of the home remedies presented here are commonly used in Southeast Asian cuisine, an area of the world that happens to be the origin of many “alternative” or homeopathic medicines.
As for ginger, I take powdered ginger root capsules for carsickness and general nausea or indigestion. It also helps my motion sickness while gaming, a common problem I have. It's absolutely wonderful and works without any side effects. I strangely found out about it from a podcast years ago, when the host was recalling her experience eating bad seafood on a trip with her now-husband.

I bought packets of that oatmeal near all the bubble bath supplies and it was my favorite thing to put in the bath along with epsom salt. I also extracted cannabinoids into cooking oil and put that on my skin before getting in the bath. It will basically take away all the pain of sore muscles if you've done a really intense workout.
I'd love that, and the ways in which people misuse them (not diluting, poisoning kids and pets, etc). They have gotten a really bad rep due to all those MLMs
My mom's an herbalist so I've been using these for years. I actually have flu A right now and a combination of garlic and ginger has really been helping.
Going to an actual doctor?! No way, I live in Iowa, I would have to sell everything I own to see one, have you seen healthcare cost here? Big nope, I'll just go chug blended corn and eggs.
You can just do what the illegals and poor people do. Go to the ER, get treated, then ignore the collection calls. No one is going to sue to collect on medical debt, and hospitals can't refuse to treat. The hilarity comes in here at this point, hospitals have to bill insurance companies more to make up the difference for the folks that don't pay. Then insurance companies have to raise rates to cover the cost of claims. People drop insurance, and go to step one. And the cycle continues.
@@DefensorMilitas It's a vicious cycle. People cannot afford care so they only go to the ER for emergency conditiond when it's the absolute last resort, which means their hospital bills are going to be much much higher. This leads to inability to pay, and bills going unpaid due to the extreme cost. Which leads to even higher prices and ALL people not being able to pay due to higher costs. It isn't about being poor or rich, as emergency care can literally bankrupt you if insurance decides not to cover your conditions, or if you require care that is conviniently not covered (guess what, dipshit, Insurance LOVES to screw people over due to the absolute oligopoly they've gained in America.) Then you have misinformed little shits like you going online and saying "IT'S THE ILLEGALS AND POOR PEOPLE WHO DID IT". Hopefully you never get a stroke, cancer, gall stones, ruptured spleen, bowel obstruction, or any other host of spontaneous conditions that lead to extreme expenses at any possible time. I'm sure your insurance would never screw YOU over by not covering your complete care.
@A P Yeah nah. That's what actually happens. Hospitals can't actually turn away some one that needs treatment. Prejudice doesn't have anything to do with it either. People of all skin colors do it. Seems like you should go work an ER and see how many people don't have insurance.
Hi! Does anyone know if the "soy for menopausal hot flashes" trick would be safe for someone whose estrogen has a nasty habit of becoming cancerous? My mom had a double mastectomy last year after they found (thankfully VERY early stage) breast cancer, this particular type having grown through her estrogen-so she CANNOT have hormonal therapy, and they even have her on medications that are quick-starting menopause to protect her from this specific type of cancer further. (Is my understanding, anyway!) But she does suffer from the hot flashes a lot, and since she can't receive hormonal therapy to treat it, I was wondering if the soy trick might be safe for her to try? The video mentions it 'imitating estrogen', so I'm not sure if that would increase the risk of her cancer returning just like actual estrogen would. Any answers or resources to learn more would be SO amazingly appreciated!!! Thank you so much for the video, SciShow, I love all the random fun facts I get to blurt out at family dinners. :D
Hello again! I asked this and then went straight to Google, hoping that, if I could not effectively Google-Fu (I am notoriously bad at getting relevant search results), someone might see this. But I'm happy to report a small amount of research has netted me multiple relevant results, of which I've gleaned a general consensus from. I'll link the sources at the end of this post for anyone else interested to check out (and also in case anyone notices one or more of these sources aren't reliable-another Google thing I struggle with.) DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DOCTOR NOR DO I HAVE ANY FORMAL MEDICAL TRAINING. THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. I am summarizing my findings for the benefit of others with the same question, or an interest in said question, which is: "Can soy foods reduce menopausal hot flashes in people who have had estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer?" and some related questions I developed as I was researching the initial question, such as: "Are phytoestrogens safe for people who have had estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer?", "Do different forms of soy (ex. whole soy foods, soy protein supplements, soy condiments) affect how phytoestrogens may benefit people who have had estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer"? and "Do phytoestrogens behave too much like estrogen and may increase the likelihood of estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer occurring or returning?". My hope is to provide more information for others to launch themselves from in the pursuit of the best answer for their specific body and lifestyle. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CONCLUSION AS MEDICAL OR SCIENTIFIC FACT, but instead as one piece of information to supplement further/additional research! Thank you! SOY/PHYTOESTROGENS & ESTROGEN-RECEPTOR POSITIVE BREAST CANCER: The main question, "Can soy foods reduce menopausal hot flashes in people with/who have had estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer?", gave me multiple answers that line up with SciShow's video quite well in terms of what's known and what isn't. While it was hard to find search results that also included answers about menopausal hot flashes, I suspect if soy is safe in regards to cancer, that means it's safe to use as a treatment for hot flashes. Research suggests that not only, in appropriate portions, is soy safe for people who have or have had estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer, but that studies have shown correct usage of soy may even reduce the risk of such breast cancers occurring or returning. More research needs to be done in the specifics of estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer and soy/phytoestrogens, but from what little research exists across multiple studies, medical professionals appear to be hopeful of a substantial correlation. A common misconception appears to be that because phytoestrogens RESEMBLE estrogen in structure, that means estrogen-receptor positive breast cancers can use phytoestrogens to grow. To my understanding, while phytoestrogens can be used by the body similarly to estrogen, they are not the same as estrogen, and do not become estrogen when consumed/digested. That said, I go into a little more detail under 'different forms of soy' on research that suggests TOO MUCH phytoestrogens can promote cancer growth, which is why I specified 'appropriate portions' and 'correct usages' of soy. (SciShow's point of 'soy/phytoestrogens are not as effective as estrogen-based hormonal therapy' adds up here, as my understanding is phytoestrogens are weaker than estrogen.) DIFFERENT FORMS OF SOY = DIFFERENT EFFECTS: My research did suggest there's differences between whole soy, soy protein supplements, and soy condiments. Generally, about 1-2 servings of whole soy (ex. edamame, tofu, tempeh, miso) a day seems to have a chance of reducing the risk of estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer from occurring or returning, and therefore is considered safe for people who have or have had this type of breast cancer to add/keep in their diets. It may not have a noticeable beneficial effect, but it appears overwhelmingly unlikely to worsen risks. Soy protein supplements, on the other hand, appear to be discouraged. The science is much less understood, but these supplements do contain a higher concentration of phytoestrogens, as well as other things that can reduce general health in people with hormone-sensitive cancers, and one study suggests these supplements may 'switch on' genes that encourage cancer growth. My research appears to recommend that these soy protein supplements (often used in shakes, smoothies and protein bars) not be used as a treatment or preventative for hormone-positive cancers. Soy condiments, such as soy sauce and soybean oil, conversely have a very reduced amount of phytoestrogens. This means they 'do not pose risks in terms of fueling cancer growth' (by, presumably, getting too many phytoestrogens in a serving), though they also don't appear to be very beneficial for preventing hormone-positive cancers, and they contain other things that may negatively affect general health, so my understanding is 'they don't do anything good or bad to cancers, but they're not super great for you in general, so if you already have health conditions (like cancer) it may be safest to skip them'. I also saw a little talk about GMO-containing soy versus organic soy, but the research on how this may impact estrogen-sensitive cancers appears to be inconclusive. My understanding is both are considered safe, but which is more effective for prevention remains to be seen. SOY & CANCER IN GENERAL: My research focused on soy and estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer, but I did see some notes about prostate and gastric cancers as well, the risks of which also appear to be reduced by whole soy in some studies. One study also talked about healthy servings of soy benefiting people with estrogen-receptor NEGATIVE breast cancer, as the study shows that people with more soy in their diets appeared less likely to die of estrogen-receptor negative breast cancer than people with less soy in their diets. CLOSING: ONCE AGAIN, I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. These were my observations from the sources I've listed below, and are subject to my flawed human brain. As well, this is an ongoing subject of interest to me as the child of a mother (and grandmother, and great-grandmother) who survived breast cancer and cannot receive hormonal therapy for her menopause symptoms, so if anyone who sees this has more information, resources, or just notices a flaw in my observations, PLEASE feel free to reply here! I am definitely going to bring these findings to my mom's attention, and if she's interested in looking into it and her doctors approve (because you should ALWAYS CONSULT LICENSED DOCTORS before trying anything for medical purposes!!!), I may come back to this thread in a few months with our personal results, also for the benefit of anyone interested in these questions. :) SOURCES (please let me know if any of these aren't reputable-as I mentioned earlier, it's hard for me to discern reliable sources from unreliable!) - pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11896091/ - www.dana-farber.org/for-patients-and-families/care-and-treatment/support-services-and-amenities/nutrition-services/faqs/soy-and-cancer/ - www.oncologynutrition.org/erfc/healthy-nutrition-now/foods/soy-and-breast-cancer - www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/features/soy-effects-on-breast-cancer - www.breastcancer.org/research-news/soy-may-offer-benefits-for-hr-neg-disease
Last Wednesday at a cross-country meet I got a stress fracture 2-3 inches below the knee on my tibia and a sprained ankle. I went to the doctor Thursday morning at 9:40 and walked out by 11:30 with an X-ray, a leg brace, and crutches, as well as a recommendation for an orthopedist. I don’t know where in America you live but if you need good care just come on over to Virginia.
Hello Mr. Hank Green, Good to see you again. I miss you on PBS-EONS. I also notice that you can move your hands and arms out away from your body, unlike on Eons. Seems much more natural. Stay well and be safe. Virginia
Fresh plums are even better than prunes to treat constipation. Pears also stimulate bowel movements, but they can produce some excess gas as well. An even more potent alternative is yogurt plus fresh sweet fruits like apples, pears or grapes, but this induces vivid fermentation and you can go from constipation to acute diarrhea in a matter of hours.
I remember helping pick a plum tree one year, and having to be careful to not eat more than 7 plums each day, yet trying to finish the box of plums before they went over. NO problem with dropping a load during that time, even though I'd had experience with very painful movements by then. So painful, I was surprised to not see blood in the basin. Love fresh plums, hate prunes.
I accidentally impaled my hand on a knitting needle this morning. But I'm pretty sure the only fix for that is to not leave my knitting needles pointing up from the ground.
When my division in Boot Camp first formed up, the environment was such a shock that none of us had a bowel movement for the first _three days._ That _fourth_ day, though, we made up for it.
When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was given ginger tea by a Chinese acquaintance (we used to go to their shop a lot) and he said in China, they use this. It did work too. But we don't live there anymore. 😞
If you really want a good effect just wash the ginger and dice it very fine. Don't remove the skin. It works even better without peeling it. Let it sit for 15 minutes and enjoy the spicy treat :)

I used lemon juice for a cold sore because I had to get to school and I had very little time. It burned, but it was gone in less than thirty min. Does lemon grass oil burn?
The oatmeal powder really works. I had chicken pox when I was 32. The itching made me miserable! A friend told me to put whole oats in a laundry bag and move it in a bath then soak. My itching stopped within minutes. The powder you mentioned, works well on your face as you can’t keep it under water. LOL. You can also put the oats in a blender and make a paste from the flour if you can’t get your hands on the powder. You didn’t mention turmeric. I think there is research now for it reducing inflammation throughout the body. I took 4k of it daily which helped to heal my kidneys after years of over uses of motin.
My eczema is referred to as the (my paternal grandmother's maiden name)'s curse. Because every generation gets hit with severe eczema. Anyway, when I was first learning how to coat my body in emollients at the tender age of six, my dad told me, my grandmother had to bath him in oatmeal oil because Aveeno didn't exist as a soap yet.
I never knew what that was all about... until now.

Ginger is the savior of many dancers. I never knew why it worked but we always keep a good stash of it in my studio for when someone spins too much.
Hallelujah!

Strong ginger tea, drunk very hot with honey is very effective when you are first coming down with cold/flu.

Maybe by action via osmosis that hinders germ proliferation through "drying out"
its actually an ancient method that is still used in the US prison system. Probably like people used quicksilver against some other disease lol
hmm not to discredit but its *salt, and tbh sugar does NOT help anything, even if i see scientific study to support, i despise any use of sugar.
I'm glad peppermint tea worked for you! It made my all day sickness worse 🤣 🤦♀️ ginger beer however worked much better for me. Different bodies ha!

That's so awful! Did he have diverticulitis? I'm so sorry.
Sorry to hear that, I should of died from the same thing bowel twisted got postoperative infection that doctors caught, before it caused my death.

If it burns on your lips it must be torture if you get it on the extra sensitive parts of your man or/and lady bits.
I recommend a poo transplant and a course of leeches.

Don't be afraid to look for help from other clinics, even if you have to drive a little bit to get to them. I certainly hope they can diagnose and treat you soon!
AuskaDezjArdamaath, I’ve heard apples with peanut butter also help with nausea and vomiting, try adding some in addition to the ginger

Short lines full of rich people or those willing into get to ruinous debt. Freedom!
Guys, it was a joke.
crystallized (candied) ginger has a nice bonus. it's _really_ tasty! just be sure to consume in moderation -- it also bears a curious heat sensation that can get overwhelming if one has too much of the stuff.
this is one super cool video, y'all. things like this are why I am very happy to be a subscriber to the SciShow channels! please, keep up the great work!
Candied or raw, it's also really good for menstrual cramps, but you can get high on raw ginger.
I like candied ginger when I have a rare sweet tooth! Due to the heat factor, I don't have to worry about eating too much as I might w/ candy or cookies!
I keep a fresh aloe cactus in my kitchen and snap off a chunk whenever I burn myself.
It works so well.
For Burns on the Skin I have used Lavender Oil. It takes away the Pain within minutes and you are able to touch the damaged area with out pain shortly after, too.
I tried Aloe but it wasn’t as effective as the Lavender for me.
My top natural home remedy ingredients:
2. Coconut oil
I first started using it when I kept getting thrush due to my bad immune system.
3. Baking soda:
Honestly I know there are thousands upon thousands of ways to use this stuff.

I'd like it if you guys did more stuff about home remedies. This video was so cool.
I have an inner ear problem which increases the likelihood of me getting motion sickness. Ginger works great as a preventative to take before getting into the car with someone else driving. But taking it after I am already feeling sick only results in ginger flavored vomit. (For me, at least)

It's the AI, trying to figure out what are you going to do next ;)
Nah, most food is stored by the body or used to build parts of the body and then eventually is turned into CO2 and H20, which you then exhale (or pee in the case of H20). When you lose weight, pretty much all that weight was actually breathed out of your body. Poop is just the stuff your body can't absorb like fibers and other odd compounds.
You must have crappy feeding times.

I bought packets of that oatmeal near all the bubble bath supplies and it was my favorite thing to put in the bath along with epsom salt.
It isn't about being poor or rich, as emergency care can literally bankrupt you if insurance decides not to cover your conditions, or if you require care that is conviniently not covered (guess what, dipshit, Insurance LOVES to screw people over due to the absolute oligopoly they've gained in America.)
Then you have misinformed little shits like you going online and saying "IT'S THE ILLEGALS AND POOR PEOPLE WHO DID IT".
(Is my understanding, anyway!)
But she does suffer from the hot flashes a lot, and since she can't receive hormonal therapy to treat it, I was wondering if the soy trick might be safe for her to try?
I'll link the sources at the end of this post for anyone else interested to check out (and also in case anyone notices one or more of these sources aren't reliable-another Google thing I struggle with.)
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DOCTOR NOR DO I HAVE ANY FORMAL MEDICAL TRAINING. Thank you!
SOY/PHYTOESTROGENS & ESTROGEN-RECEPTOR POSITIVE BREAST CANCER:
The main question, "Can soy foods reduce menopausal hot flashes in people with/who have had estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer?", gave me multiple answers that line up with SciShow's video quite well in terms of what's known and what isn't.
(SciShow's point of 'soy/phytoestrogens are not as effective as estrogen-based hormonal therapy' adds up here, as my understanding is phytoestrogens are weaker than estrogen.)
DIFFERENT FORMS OF SOY = DIFFERENT EFFECTS:
My research did suggest there's differences between whole soy, soy protein supplements, and soy condiments.
SOY & CANCER IN GENERAL:
My research focused on soy and estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer, but I did see some notes about prostate and gastric cancers as well, the risks of which also appear to be reduced by whole soy in some studies. One study also talked about healthy servings of soy benefiting people with estrogen-receptor NEGATIVE breast cancer, as the study shows that people with more soy in their diets appeared less likely to die of estrogen-receptor negative breast cancer than people with less soy in their diets.
CLOSING:
ONCE AGAIN, I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL.

The oatmeal powder really works. I had chicken pox when I was 32. The itching made me miserable! A friend told me to put whole oats in a laundry bag and move it in a bath then soak. My itching stopped within minutes. The powder you mentioned, works well on your face as you can’t keep it under water. LOL.
