1968 Chrysler 300 Rear Springs Modification - Leaf Addition

  • After 48 years of wear the rear leaf springs the 1968 Chrysler 300 has acquired a fair bit of sag and loss of tension. While driving around this wasn’t a big problem, but once I began to load cargo, and people in the back it became apparent that I would be bottoming out soon and a significant loss of suspension travel. Now, appearance-wise, I do like the low stance the 300 had, but this is not how the car should be, and was not practical nor did it help with handling (and these big C-bodies don’t need any more reason to handle like a yacht)
What we did to fix this is pull the original rear spring packs out from under the car and add two additional leafs from an old 1970’s Dodge pickup Joe had kicking around. This would stiffen the pack and bring back the spring tension that was originally there, if not a little more. You have the option of having the spring re-bent, but from casual conversations about this, it doesn’t really seem to be an effective long-term solution. Joe has done this same process with his 1967 Newport and is quite pleased with the results. So we thought it would be a good solution to my sagging spring problem also.

I spent $750.00 on a set of heavy duty/performance TNT for my '68 new Yorker 4 door hardtop from DETROIT SPRINGS OEM Detroit Michigan.
My '73 dodge charger 318 hardtop I did the same, non-magnum.
Sticks to the California freeway blacktop like no other manufacturers...
Your video's and Chryslers are fucking awesome

air shocks did the trick on my '68 newport. And the level was adjustable with added weight.

great vid! btw, don't forget the torsion bars can raise or lower the front w/an impact gun..just keep accurate track of the turns.

I still have to put in front shocks, and we might adjust them when we do. Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoy the vids!

Glad to see this fine '68 300 has been re-activated for the summer, and is in such good hands. Replacing (or just adding extra leafs if needed) those rear springs makes a HUGE difference in handling. Really sends them from barge to speedboat. Over time, they all sag, and these C-bodies don't handle like they should, despite the appealing "low-rider" look. It's even worse on Imperials' especially from '67-68 with their lo-o-ong rear overhangs. New springs on mine made it feel like it had lost 1000 lbs. Interesting that truck springs also fit the C-body, but it kinda makes sense as well..... ..... Stiffer shocks also help .......good luck with your suspension upgrade........ THANKS for posting this.....

Glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for the comment, it is spot on, I can attest to everything you said! It definitely tightened up the body roll.

.. Your "after" photo shows that now that car is "down-in-the-nose".... which mandates that you turn the front torsion bars up a little. Otherwise, it looks goofy, IMO. ... A Chrysler is too heavy to be a performance car: that belongs to Plymouths and Dodges.

To be honest I didn't like the amount of rake the 300 had after installing the extra leaves either. This was solved later when we installed new front shocks and put a turn or two back into the torsion bars.
Anything can be a performance car if the blower is big enough....
