  • After what felt like months, our car has finally arrived from Australia! With the car being buried under a pile of other containers, we had to push the guys at the port along a bit to get it out that day. It was such a relief opening the doors and seeing our car/home there in one piece!
    We made a last minute decision before we left Australia to get some fly screens made up for the rear doors, as the ones that Jolie had attempted to make were absolute rubbish. They arrived in the post the day after we flew out, so a courier dropped them to the shipping agent to get them in the container with the car. The morning after we get the car back Mark installs them, taking only 20 minutes. So far they seem like a really well made product, so we’ll test them out over the next week or so and give you a run down on how they go! If you’re looking for fly screens for your car, Doug from “Top Gear 2 Go” is your man. He was quick to get them made up and posted out to us and makes products for lots of different cars.
    Check our his website www.topgear2go.com.au
    With the new fly screen installed, we couldn’t get out of Dili fast enough. First stop is Mt Ramelau, Timor-Leste’s highest peak at 2986m. The 85km drive to Hato Builico, the town where you begin the climb, took us a good 2 1/2 hours as the roads are in terrible shape. The reasonably dramatic climb out of Dili not only offers some pretty special views it also gives a welcome relief to the very humid coastal weather. When we reached Hatu Builico, we continued driving up a steel and loose rock 4wd track up to the campground a bit further up the mountain.
    We set our alarms to 3am and made the hike up to the summit to watch the sunrise. We couldn’t of picked a more perfect morning to come up here as it was so clear. At the summit it was absolutely freezing. The temperature was only about 5 degrees, though the wind went straight to your bones! For the rest of the day Jolie had a bright red face from wind burn. Nevertheless, being here for sunrise is an amazing experience as the views are magical.
    Hope you enjoyed the video! Next week we’re doing a lap of the south coast of Timor-Leste then driving north again to Baucau where we’ll pick up our friend that we met on Atauro Island, then drive to the most eastern point of the island, Tutuala Beach, which has a lovely coral garden and some of the clearest water I’ve seen.

      We've actually been talking the last few days about how much we miss the diving in Timor-Leste! We were truly spoilt while we were there. So I'd definitely recommend going back for a visit! Which part of Timor-Leste were you posted at?

      The Way Overland I deployed with 3RAR and battalion HQ was at Dili heliport being a fitter and turner we were there but often pushed out on patrols to the various FOB’s between there and glenno up in the mountains so beautiful, when we got some downtime we would head over christo rei for a good climb up followed by a swim down the bottom! The water was beautiful I hope tourism continues to improve, I remember back then seeing the beaches and thinking it’s just like Bali but better haha

      @TheWayOverland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's good to hear you were able to enjoy the rest of the country and not just be stuck in Dili!
      Yeah it'd be good if tourism improves, though hopefully it always stays "untouched" in a sense and doesn't become like Bali!

    So glad to see Timor hasn’t changed since I lived there in 2008. The troopy really is a great car for that country. Also glad it fit in the container so well.

    • @TheWayOverland
      @TheWayOverland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think most of the roads have had any maintenance there since they were laid so we were quite happy to have the troopy there haha
      Cheers! 👍

      The Way Overland fantastic. I lived on Gili Air for 8 months last year and my parents live in Bali so I’m following along closely. The drone shots really add to overall production value. Interested to see the next steps :D hope you are heading to the temples in Jogjakarta too!

      Oh cool where are you living now?
      We’re in Bali now and have had a bit of a hold up but hopefully we’ll be on our way to Java by the end of next week where Jogjakarta is on the list 😬 I’m really looking forward to visiting there as I’ve heard really good things!
      We’ll be heading through Myanmar in a few months still but will get in touch. Did you want to maybe send an email so I can put down your details?
      Thanks! 🙂

    You guys were making me nervous when you kept calling your vehicle the “car”. Very happy to see a 4WD/ troopy. You would not get very far out of Dili in a standard car🙂.

    Congrats on the successful shipment. Did you have to clean the troopy super well like you do when you ship it to Australia?

    • @TheWayOverland
      @TheWayOverland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Traveling Together Journal thanks! Other than the shipping delays it was a smooth process.
      And funny you ask that! We asked our shipping agent in Darwin and he had a bit of a giggle and said no, don't bother. When we picked it up there was no quarantine inspection, and the customs officer just watched the container being opened and didn't even look inside the car.
      Although a long way off, we're not looking forward to cleaning the car to take it back into Australia! It'll be a huge job to get it that spotless! When do you plan on taking your car to Aus?

    • @TheTravelingTogetherJournal
      @TheTravelingTogetherJournal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is such encouraging news!
      We just finished a trip through Central America and will need to work for a couple years before we can set out on our next big journey that will hopefully include Australia, south east Asia, Africa, and South America.
      I'll be watching your route and shipping with interest. If you make it to California in the next couple years we'd be happy to show you around:)
