The best theoretical position for a string silencer is between the 5th and 6th harmonic nodes which places it 18.3% of the way in from where the string no longer touches the bow 1. String your bow and measure the length of the string from where it’s not longer touching the bow limbs. 2. Multiply that length by .183 3. Put the middle of your silencers that distance from where the string is no longer touching the bow 4. If they are fur silencers be sure to wrap it the same direction as the string is rotating so that if you have to tighten the string later on it tightens the silencer instead of loosening
Im wondering if you could do a video on arrow spine consistency and how true they are to charts from brand to brand for example easton vs gold tip vs victory vs skylon etc etc.
This is a tough one to answer. It really depends on the bow. I had a longbow that was dead quiet with just cat whiskers, but I was also shooting wood arrows too. They would wear out over time though. In recent years the wool ones are what I like the best. They go through the string, so stay in place, and "look" the best to me. Which, looks are what you make of them, but they get the job done well, so just part of it for me. The fur offer more string coverage, so I believe they would offer the best in performance standards though. They look good, but I trim mine a bit shorter in length so not as "heavy" on the string.
You twisted the fur silencer opposite to the direction of the twist in the string. You should match the twist so that as you twist the string, the fur puff gets tighter and forms a cleaner ball. Same applies to my favourite, the ew bateman campuff
im curious about the padded strips that go on the bow tips under the string. Are those useful or necessary? Do they do the same thing as the styles Shown here? TIA
Those work as limb dampeners and will help with noise as well. They also provide some cushion if you hang your bow by the string on a peg vertically. Some are bulkier and help prevent brush from getting caught between the bow string and limb (they are called brush buttons). So they are not necessary, but they do provide a bit. For noise reduction, a string mounted silencer does more.
For me, I'd recommend 50# or higher for elk. Can it be done with less, I'm sure, but for my peace of mind I'd go at least 50# at draw with an appox 500 grains arrow.
I broke a string strand fumbling around before "clamping" the bow and rubber banding the 'working end. If I had a third arm and hand it would be unnecessary to clamp the bow to the working surface.
