I always admired how Harryhausen basically got performances out of his puppets as though they were live actors. They each had their own personality and soul.
Harryhausen's creature "acting" is outstanding here. I love the "dafuq" look on the centaur's face starting 0:56, and the posture just adds to it. Such a genuine mix of confusion and fear. He's shocked! He's shook! Add to that the incredibly organic wing-flapping at 1:22. Really sophisticated work.
I remember watching this as a child and be *very* upset that the griffin lost. I'm not even sure I knew what a griffin was at the time, but I knew something half-lion and half-eagle was a lot cooler than the centaur-cyclops.
I felt the same way when the Sabre tooth tiger died in the other sinbad movie. Then when I got older and realized that she was the villain, I felt bad that the Troglodyte died
They just do not make these types of movies anymore. What a legendary classic! The music, creatures and scenary are just beautiful. I like the Sinbad movies. Jason and the Argonauts was brilliantly done. There is no mistaken that classic opening music. It was wonderful growing up and watching these legendary movies. Pure Classic Movies!!! 🎥🎥🎥
Growing up, this was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen on the screen. Harryhausen could truly create wonder. Ohh, and consider me squarely in the Griffin's camp! It broke my heart watching that noble beast die.

I remember being about 10 or 12 years old when I first saw this movie and even with my rudimentary understanding of good and evil and right and wrong and justice and courage I knew that Sinbad had wimped out and ceased to be a good guy when he stood passively by and watched as the malevolent centaur triumphed against the beautiful and noble centaur. Sinbad, clearly, was the counterbalance against the sinister plotting of the treacherous sorcerer but when the sorcerer was attacking the centaur our hero had his best chance to eliminate the evil one and he didn't...I always resented that as a kid.
As annoying as it is that the villain ruined a fair fight, it's ironic that he actually bothers to help his monster ally while Sinbad usually leaves his monster allies to fight and die alone.
I don't know what it is, but the monsters from this, the 7th voyage of Sinbad,the eye of the tiger and Jason and the Argonauts always terrify the hell from me. No matter how many horror film's I watch, nothing terrify a me as much as these do.The sound effects, the animation's are just amazing. Maybe stuck with me because I watched them as a young kid, maybe like 5-6 possibly younger. Tho these movies are what got me into fantasy, history and movie's in general and I'll always love them for that.
Harryhausen films, aside from the legendary stop-motion effects, always went the extra mile in getting beautiful, barely-dressed women in lead roles; this, 1 Million B.C., Clash of the Titans, etc.
Trog from Eye of the Tiger suffered the same unfortunate fate. Sinbad doesn't seem to have that much of a soft spot for helpless mythological creatures.

If you look closely, you'll notice the majority of stop motion monsters rarely get close to or physically interact for long periods of time with the live action actors. Hell, in this scene, Sinbad is dodging the centaurs strikes until the club breaks! Nowadays I think this would be easier with computer editing, but back then the art, while majestic in it's own rights, was kinda limited. In universe, however, do you really want to be in-between two fighting mythical beasts who might unintentionally kill you as a product of their fight?

I used to watch this repeatedly as an early 80s child, the monsters scared me senseless. Watching it back now, the only thing that scares me is the realisation of how much time has since passed. I guess that's life.
When I was younger watching this, I thought the griffin was real pretty with its wings and golden-like sheen. Not sure if it was suppose to be a monster too, but I was quite sad when it was defeated.

Centaur should had serious marks from claws of Griffin and cuts from sharp beag of Griffin. Centaur just has strong arms but not strong enough to defeat the Griffin a monster has deadly weapons. Who ever made this movie it was wants Centaur to win because idea of maker of this movie is Centaur get killed by Sinbad not Griffin other wise we would seen Griffin one the fight not Centaur. You know why I realize now that people seem to largely prefer stop-motion to CGI, even though CGI looks more realistic and smooth? For several reasons. One, it adds an air of otherworldliness and mysticism to the monsters. But the more important reason? It takes way more effort to produce stop motion than CGI. CGI is computer-generated; technology does most of the real work. But with stop motion, every single frame had to be painstakingly posed and animated. There was real heart put into those creations. Real time, real HUMAN effort. CGI makes it appear more real, but at the similarly real cost of losing some of that heart and soul that made stop motion so iconic.
"The forces of good and evil--battling eternally. It is the deeds of weak and mortal men--they tip the scales one way or the other." Good stuff, a real lesson there to ponder.
I know they can work real wonders with CGI and AI these days, but stop-motion animation shows real craftsmanship and creativity. Bravo Rsy Harryhausen 👏🏾❤🌟

I know that the film was made when special effects were only just finding their feet and the budget was low but I just love the fact that when the centaur throws the broken club, it picks up speed after going over the guy's head

I don't know, if a modern CGI remake would exist it wouldn't be scary at all. Same thing happened to the clash of the titans movie, the CGI Medusa sucks while the stop motion one moves and sounds incredibly scary. I don't really understand how people can say something like "lul the centaur is super funny haha", that dude really disturbs me. :D The way he moves and the sounds he makes, god. This scene pissed me so much when I watched this as a child how sinbad just sat there and didn't help. A similar scene happens in sinbad eye of the tiger when the sabertooth is killing the troglodyte. I would clench my fist and clench my fist teary eyed yelling for them to help. As an adult it reminds me of the quote all it takes for evil to prevail in this world is for good men to do nothing. This scene still pisses me off :p

Dude, could you imagine if Laika, the creators of Coraline and Paranorman, made another Stopmotion Sinbad movie? I mean, not only the monsters but the humans too? It would be a dream come true!
It really is a shame. I’m also pretty sure that with today’s technology Stop Motion could be enhanced on so many levels that it could easily rival completely CG Creatures while looking much more realistic.

real late, but although I love stop motion and I still think it has a charm to it, cgi monsters can be just as well done, it just takes effort.

I still find this kind of animation better than most movie nowadays that rely heavily on CG.

This scene pissed me so much when I watched this as a child how sinbad just sat there and didn't help. A similar scene happens in sinbad eye of the tiger when the sabertooth is killing the troglodyte. I would clench my fist and clench my fist teary eyed yelling for them to help. As an adult it reminds me of the quote all it takes for evil to prevail in this world is for good men to do nothing. This scene still pisses me off :p
Same here - it always used to piss me off seeing poor Trog get torn to ribbons while Sinbad & his cronies simply stood back & did nothing... such a tragic, pointless death.

It really is a shame. I’m also pretty sure that with today’s technology Stop Motion could be enhanced on so many levels that it could easily rival completely CG Creatures while looking much more realistic.
