  • Today Uncle Stonnie is demonstrating how we teach Labrador Retriever puppies to fetch and explaining why we like to use the Inductive retrieve method to build strong foundations.
    The inductive retrieve is an awesome way for novice trainers to learn to express their expectations and motivate puppies to meet those expectations!
    00:00 - Introduction with Field Bred Labrador Retriever
    05:57 - Winston (Chocolate English Labrador Retriever Puppy)
    11:45 - Toby Keith (Chocolate English Labrador Retriever Puppy 18)

    Stonnie is the BEST! We traveled from Florida to take Toby Keith for in kennel training. We researched trainers for months and after watching hours of videos we knew Stonnie was the only trainer for Toby!

    I had a Pembroke Welsh corgi who would fetch until his stubby little legs nearly gave out. He loved fetch and would do it for as long as we let him. I grew up with Golden retrievers, and he put some of those dogs to shame. He came by it completely naturally, which both baffled and tickled me. I sure miss my little boy.😢❤ Love your videos, Stonnie. Thank you for sharing your love of dogs with us. You are a treasure.😊

      My best friends have a Golden & their son has Golden & Corgi. When we play fetch in the house with all three, the Corgi rules. The Retrievers don't stand a chance.

    I didn't need a tutorial for this tbh. I just really wanted to see cute lab puppies fetch.
    Side note: the grass is very healthy looking 👍

    Sawat Diiiiii (Hello) from Phuket Thailand…
    In late 2020 I found myself being retired from the cockpit of my helicopter over in Abu Dhabi. My young copilots were asking what I was going to do during my retirement..?
    I told all of them that I was going to get another (My 3rd) Golden Retriever and teach her how to swim.
    They didn’t get it….
    In March ‘21, 8 week old “Sandy” took up residence at my home here on the island of Phuket in SW Thailand (8N098E)
    Your videos over the past 3 years have been instrumental in both Sandy’s….. and my “Recurrent Training”.
    Watching you work is almost like climbing into the Flight Simulator every 6 months and running through “How to”procedures.
    You nailed it when you said…..”Have Fun”…. Just like we tried to do in the cockpit….
    With that said, I have decided to get Sandy, who is now 3yrs 5mo old…… a roommate.
    Another female Golden Retriever will be joining our pack next week. Like Sandy, “Tylor” comes from good American stock/blood-line.
    Raising another Golden Retriever puppy starting at 65yrs of age….. is going to be challenging. But, the work that you are doing over there on that side of the planet, is helping make my work over here, much easier.
    Many thanks…..

  • @TomsWhip

    I would just like to add that you can teach pretty much any dog to retrieve, especially if you start them out as puppies. It doesn't have to be natural born retrievers, for those watching who don't have one of those.
    The key is to start them out in a narrow passageway you've made in your yard, or a hallway, with an item you've made exciting. Throw it down the end, and now there is no where else for them to go but back through you. And once they come back near you, you simply offer them their favorite treat in exchange for the retrieving item. (Or another exciting toy you swap with, etc)
    Alot of dogs would naturally want to possess the item, or engage in a game of tag, and generally find it harder to understand the concept of retrieving in an open space like on stonnies big field there, therefore narrowing that field down to there only being back and forth -no sideways, simplifies the excercise alot, especially for the none natural born retrievers

    • @TomsWhip
      @TomsWhip หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I should quickly add that by teaching any dog to retrieve i mean the basic concept of retrieving something. Your random dog is obviously unlikely to ever achieve a rock solid soft mouth retrieve politely to hand. But i think what most people want is just being able to play fetch etc

    Annie is soooo adorable! My puppy and I love fetch, and I taught him with your instructions. Its good that you taught us that perfection isn't as important as having fun. He can play fetch with little kids now, and they are thrilled. Heis a one year old golden retriever field bred. No other dog I have raised does as well,at everything , not just fetching! I owe our success to your teaching and philosophy. You are the greatest!

  • @rockinpranch8173

    I really enjoyed your approach! Seems like a more positive reward based “forced fetch.” Do you ever have that don’t respond well enough, and require a “more traditional” negative reinforcement follow up, such as ear pinch?

    • @StonnieDennis
      @StonnieDennis  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      No, I don’t teach retrieving for money so I don’t feel the need to make a dog who doesn’t want to retrieve.
      Personally, if I needed a good retriever and the one I had didn’t fit the bill, I would just buy another dog.

    • @rockinpranch8173

      @@StonnieDennisgotcha, and makes total sense. I personally don’t have any interest in a field trial dog, but do enjoying hunting. I like your approach better, and feel like proper genetics would be sufficient for that.
