The music and visuals are stunning. Gary Oldman killed it in this movie. I was 19 when this came out. Seen it at least 5 times in theater!! Great reaction

I saw this on a weekend with a group of friends at the theater. We all went to see both Jurassic Park and this film the same day and I was the only one who made sure to get the ticket for Bram Stoker’s Dracula since I was fascinated by vampires at the time and wanted to keep my ticket from the movie. It’s still my favorite Dracula film adaptation, even if Keanu’s accent is awful.

The blue flame circle at the gate is an old romanian folklore tale.
It appeared on certain nights marking the site of buried treasure or cursed items.
Draculas hairy palms were also from romanian folklore, it marked someone as a werewolf or shapeshifter.

As someone who has been interested in German Romanticism broadly speaking since adolescence, this movie made a major impact on me when I saw it fresh in the cinema at age 19. This rendition of Dracula really brought out for me parallels with The Flying Dutchman by Wagner (whose Ride of the Valkyries appears most iconically in another Coppola movie), mainly the "redemption through love" of a man doomed to a restless life for all eternity. Plus Bram Stoker apparently attended a performance of Dutchman at the Wagner Festspielhaus at Bayreuth several years after the publication of Dracula. The operatic aspects of this Dracula (including the incredible set designs, special effects, costumes [some of which make nods to Klimt], etc., etc.) render Coppola's film a manifestation of Wagner's Gesamtkunstwerk, and in my opinion would be difficult for anyone to top.
The recent movie with Coppola's nephew as Dracula, focusing on a not entirely subservient Renfield, is enjoyable as well, but in a different way...

I'm so glad Coppola included the novel's colorful cast of supporting characters, especially Quincy Morris who almost always gets left out of film adaptations from Nosferatu on down. I was always proud of Quincy, a piece of America- the frontier forever conjoined to the Old World legend of Count Dracula. Quincy with his vampire King dispatching Jim Bowie (Alamo vet) knife and Cygany dispatching lever action 30ought6 rifle. How cool is that?Guess the Harkers agreed it was cool they named their firstborn after him.

Adore this film. Gloriously theatrical and beautifully made. Shot entirely on soundstages in Hollywood using old school in-camera effects and opticals. And that amazing score. So good.

It was Gary Oldman's idea in large part for the bat transformation in the big confrontation between Dracula and Van Helsing & company. He felt they didn't fear him in his human form, so the suit was added to make him truly frightening. Glad you noticed, Mom.

Coppola's version of Dracula was the closest thing to the Bram stoker's novel that I have viewed. And believe me I'm a big Dracula fan LOL so I think I've seen every one that has been released. And by the way there were a few things missed in editing: the couch scene with the suitors and a smashed hat; the wrong side of the neck was grabbed after the psychiatrist was bitten; and the placement of Mina's hat was different in the scenes at the movie tent. Run it through again and they're actually quite obvious LOL.

Gary Oldman is the best Dracula ever. I love Keanu but he wasn't right for this role. His accent is unconvincing haha. My favorite role he plays is as Donny Barksdale the unlikeable southern redneck in "the gift" with Cate Blanchett. I live in rural Texas & he plays the role perfectly. Wonderful movie also starring Giovani Ribisi, Greg Kinnear & Katie Holmes.

Francis Ford Coppola "borrowed" from the original "Nosferatu" silent film as well as using operatic themes as well. Ryder was also the one that suggested that Coppola make his own film adaptation of this literary classic.

Dracula can also be seen as a defenseless character. Dracula is the only character in the story (really is the story) yet is not allowed to utter a single word about the events everyone else so freely discusses.

_Bram Stoker's Dracula_ boasts gorgeous visuals, lavish production design and a sumptuous score. It's a tantalising aesthetic experience, but it suffers from the wooden acting of the supporting cast and a screenplay that is poorly adapted from the source material. Oldman's performance as the titular antagonist is unique and very memorable, but it's not enough to carry the entire picture, which is tonally inconsistent almost from the beginning, jumping from scene to scene with no respect for continuity. Seemingly random lines of dialogue are recited and never addressed, and the transitions between each act occur in such a disjointed manner that the audience can't help but wonder if the editor was drunk. I have no idea whether these inconsistencies are the result of intentional creative choices or bad screenwriting.
Hopkins gives the first lacklustre performance of his career. It feels like he was tacked on at the last minute and didn't bother reading the script. Coppola seems to have yielded to the marketing department with the casting of Reeves and Ryder, who have been included to help sell the film to Generation X. Sadie Frost gives the impression that she doesn't really want to be here, while her three suitors seem like little more than extras, despite being played by reputable actors. Tom Waits turns in a performance so bizarre that not even his character being a raving lunatic can account for it. Despite its failings, the film has a great deal of charm, with its reliance on old school practical effects, optical illusions, and all manner of camera trickery.

Gary Oldman's accent is perfect and it reminds me of my Grandmothers accent.
When she spoke in her broken English is sounded just like that.
She was from that area of Europe and did believe in vampires to an extent. She came to America in the late 18 hundreds.
The Order of the Dragon is a real thing.
That was an excellent movie except for Johnathon's horrible English accent.

As much as Mr. Coppola changed the presentation of the story, it is still arguably the most accurate rendition of Mr. Stoker's book as a movie.
