The staircase scene was shot 127 times and Shelley Duvall was traumatized for life from this movie. Kubrick kept her isolated and sleep deprived to get the most terrified reactions out of her. He also didnt tell her when Jack was going to chop through the final door with the axe.
I was looking for this comment. Yea he really tortured her pretty much. And I read that her reaction on the stairs was mostly real.
I love the sound design in this classic, particularly when Danny was riding around the halls on his tricycle...😊

Danny [the boy actor was also called Danny in real life] was asked to show all kinds of emotions, the 'being-scared' takes being just part of them. He never knew how scary the scenes were he was in. He came up himself with the 'finger talking' during the audition. Danny only saw the movie when he was grown up. Went into local politics and did not pursue a movie career.
The ugly dog costume scene is a reference to the early 1940's affair between one of the Overlook Hotels owners, Harry Derwent, and someone simply known as Roger. That dog suit made it's first appearance on August 29, 1945 at a costume party given by Derwent attended by many Hollywood elite one whom said that Roger went around barking and begging trying to get Derwent's attention because he was jealous. Roger was never seen again after that night. Pretty creepy.

You absolutely MUST watch the sequel to the Shining, Doctor Sleep!! (directors cut). They managed to find actors who play the characters in the Shining that are extremely close to the originals for flashbacks.
Kubrick was an absolute ogre towards Shelley. The scene on the stairs took 120+ takes and the poor woman was EXHAUSTED.
Yeah, he was horrible to her, yelling at her in front of other members of the crew and cast, and even telling people to IGNORE HER NEEDS when she became really sick from the stress. Artists get too much of a pass for engaging in downright abusive and unethical practices in order to get the results they want. Even Shelley Duvall convinced herself that if he didn't do what he did, the movie wouldn't have been as iconic as it turned out to be. I disagree. I think she could've done a fantastic job with proper sleep, good nutrition, and, ya know, humane treatment.
Also, I think the conversation between Scatman Crothers and Danny took something like 160+ takes. Kubrick was also pretty nasty to him.
The next book, Dr. Sleep begins with Danny’s memory of the old lady in the bathtub of #237.
Idk why I find Shelly duvall so adorable but I just do, especially this character she played.
And as a person some people (like you said) can find her facial structure odd but i find it very beautiful and fairy like. Just like anya taylor joy, their faces have a different beauty than most normal and boring looking beautiful girls

The Overlook Hotel is its own, evil entity that feeds on negative energy and misery. The ghosts in there are kind of echoes from the past, sometimes gruesome events that happened at the hotel. For example, in that room 237 where Jack found that well-aged lady, was in fact the room where that woman killed herself in the bath tub. Kubrick made some very loose adaptations, that differ greatly from the book. The supernatural parts are somewhat downplayed, but in the books the ghosts are very real. Danny and his power are in the middle all of this, because his power is exceptionally strong, and this allowes the immaterial ghosts become almost physical and interact with the physical world. Danny is like a generator for the evil that resides in the hotel, fueling its power. That why the evil entity wants to trap Danny in the hotel forever, and is trying to do it by his father who is easily manipulated and corrupted by the hotel due to already existing problems with mental health and alcoholism.

This is a common reaction, when Grady unlocks the door of the food storage, thinking it was a first. But actions by 'ghosts' have happened already:
1) Ball rolls to Donny, and the door of 237 has been opened.
2) Crazy woman in 237 strangled Danny.
Also Jack drinks liquor, served by Loyd, and interacts with Grady at the ball and in the restrooms. But of course that could be all in his mind.
If so, if Jack imagines all that, could it not be that Danny's interactions with the ghosts were imaginary too?
I love how Danny is seen first talking to his “friend”. I believe that due to the violent nature of his father abusing him, his psyche began to splinter, allowing not only “Tony” to be revealed, but the secret power of shining to be used, as a means to communicate when Danny goes silent(the shaking and drooling scene). Great conversation at the end, it made me think of things I’ve never thought of. If you want something creepy, there’s a great Tv ad on TH-cam for The Shining that uses an alternate take of Jack looking thru the axed door which is TERRIFYING. I mean, really fucking scary. Look for it, you won’t regret it.
Danny's middle name is Anthony (Tony) too
Tony is not a demon - he's Danny's alter-ego who unlocked the pantry door & tricked Jack into the maze after watching endless hours of Road Runner vs Coyote. Danny's full name is Daniel Anthony Torrence - "Tony" is his inner self. Danny's way of managing his Shining.
Tony is actually Danny’s future self.
If y'all haven't seen Jack Nicholson in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest', that would be a great reaction film. That and The Shining are my 2 favorite Jack films.

@FLix2Us Doctor Sleep isn't on the level of The Shining imo, but it doesn't try to be and does its own thing. It even somehow reconciles the differences between the original Shining novel and the movie Stephen King hates while showing mad love and respect to both. Good money says you'll like it 😉

Right before the bartender (and the fully stocked bar) appear, Jack says he would give his soul for a drink. The bartender in a red devil jacket appears and serves him, but takes his soul in payment.
Jack DID NOT look like he wanted to kill his family from the word go. He was smiling and saying his wife would love the backstory about the place. He gradually, and obviously descended into his madness as time went by. Jack looked fine at the beginning. He was smiling and polite in the interview, and during the "tour" of the place. He was even "checking out" the two young women in the hallway during the tour. He finally began looking completely different in that creepy close-up of him as he became deranged. But that's not how he looked at the beginning.

Dr. Sleep is the sequel. With Danny as an adult. Very good movie.
Enjoyable reaction as always! I've been Estes Park, Colorado where they filmed the movie's hotel scenes in a beautiful old hotel. They give ghost tours but I wasn't brave enough. Thanks for the fun!
Love your guys reactions. The Shining is probably my second favorite movie of all time (second behind Halloween 1978). It is a perfect masterpiece of a film. Kubrick is also my favorite director ever and I love his adaptation of the novel. The King novel is great but there are parts in it that I feel would be silly on film and I love what Kubrick did. The Shining came out in 1980 and its timeless to me. I recommend you two watch Dr. Sleep, the sequel to this film. It is an amazing sequel. I read Dr. Sleep when it was released and told my wife and myself they should make a movie of it, a few years later they did! My wife and I saw Dr Sleep at the theatre and were amazed! I hope you guys react to it. Great reaction to this classic masterpiece. You two are awesome.
You definitely need to follow this up by watching the sequel, Doctor Sleep. A very underrated horror movie, but it is so good.
I’ve always thought this movie was really about the horrors of domestic violence. With the hotel actually being the savior for making Wendy and Danny see their father for what he really is. A lying, abusive, and deceitful coward that cares more about the bars than he does about his family.
King also didn't like that they made Wendy weaker in the film, since in the book she takes some brutal hits but keeps on living for her son. I enjoy the movie but love the book.
The book is a classic and the ending is much different and better.
The opening scenes were filmed at Mt Hood, Oregon.
That was funny, the child catcher from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is the first film character I ever remember scaring me, too.

I'm pretty sure Jack saying Wendy is a horror film addict is an outright lie. He feels like he really needs this job, so anything he can say to offset the murder story he's just been told, he's going to.
Jack's typewriter is an Adler Universal 39. It appears to change color halfway through the film. When Jack is having writers block it's white. When he tells Wendy to get the F outta here, it's dark gray.

I think people don’t fully realize how things they say, no matter how little, can actually be a spoiler for the movie. For example here, you told your mom that Ewan MacGregor played an adult Danny, so now she knows Danny will live. Please do your best to say nothing ahead of a reaction as even little points can actually give away a lot, especially if someone is clever like your mom and can pick up on it.

LOVE your reaction to this but I would also be very curious to see your thoughts on the miniseries (sanctioned by King, with a screenplay by King, directed by his friend, horror director Mick Garris)- it's very different in tone and it really plays out as a drama about a family plagued by the specter of a man's addiction, exacerbated by the evil hotel. I believe some of the location filming for it was done at the actual Stanley Hotel, which was King's inspiration for the Overlook, and the sets are more in line with what the Stanley looks like inside. The acting by Stephen Weber as Jack and Rebecca DeMornay as Wendy is top-notch. Both are really likeable and Wendy has much more agency there- and Jack is portrayed as a much more sympathetic figure, a man who truly loves his family but is haunted by alcoholism and bad decisions. There are setpieces in the miniseries that either Kubrick didn't want or the technology hadn't made possible yet that are VERY memorable (you will never trust a topiary animal again). Tony is much, much different- and even though Courtland Mead, who plays Danny, is a bit too cutesy, he carries the miniseries on his back. You really get a sense of how alone Danny feels, seeing the things he sees in the hotel, receiving all kinds of warnings he doesn't know how to interpret (there is a subplot about his desperation to learn to read- like his life depends on it, because he fears it might), and not being able to express himself because he feels a responsibility to help maintain his parents harmony. I would highly, highly recommend watching it at some point, especially if you've read the book. Being a miniseries, it's able to expand on so many concepts that didn't make it into Kubrick's movie. It's available on dvd and occasionally will be found on different streaming services.

Since you two haven’t seen Dr. Sleep, the recent sequel yet, I would highly recommend it. It takes carefully from both Stanley Kubrick’s take on The Shining while staying true to Steven King’s original story so you get a full picture of it. King is a fan of the sequel.
As a big fan of Kubrick films, I’m familiar with how he takes a story and changes it to his own. He’s big on subtle placement throughout his films to make people look for clues he’s piecing together. Two of the underlined stories are the use both Native American symbolism and German/Jewish products in the film while Jack is the white character (even using the line “white man’s burden”) and eventually trying to slaughter his family with an ax. The second being symbols of of Danny always around teddy bears, showing him bent over when something horrible is about to be shown to him in his mind and Jack reading a magazine with on an article about incest so when you see the man dressed up as a bear from the party in the past, it’s hinting at what Jack has been doing to Danny for some time.

There were some seemingly odd scenes because in trying to recreate the book, editing the movie difficult. The entire movie inside shots and some outside shots were shot on Soundstage in England
..not on location at all.

"Does the hotel absorb the souls of all the people it corrupts?" - well, pretty much. Also pretty much, King stole the idea from an earlier novel called "Burnt Offerings", which featured a decrepit house that grows younger when people expire in it. A movie was made in the mid-70s, from which, amusingly enough, Kubrick borrowed some compositional shot ideas. "The Shining" was better though, both film and book. Still, not the most original idea ever.
I agree with other comment in that I think you both should watch Doctor Sleep. I feel like you’d enjoy it and enjoy the references to this film.

Thanks! What you're looking for is a capture card. Amazon should have any kind you'll need. You simply plug an HDMI cord into the card from the source device (I record everything from my PS4) and another cord to connect it to a computer where you use some sort of recording software.

When Jack said his wife was a ghost story enthusiast at the interview you mistook it as a fact. When in fact, it was a character saying whatever he felt he had to, to get the job.

Kubrick actually got pissed off jack axed those doors too fast they had to do multiple takes anyways so he was worn out to the point it took the time Kubrick wanted from the doors being axed. I think you can find that part in a behind the scenes video on TH-cam that Kubrick's wife was filming, not sure if its still up but I seen it on here about 8 to 10 years ago
The set was so Amazing all the interiors were Built The Gold room was also Built I love this film the one that Steven Weber played in was just not as scary the fact of staying in a secluded place like this for 5 months would be really hard no matter what. I dont agree with Stephen King this film is a classic and rules.

This isn't a 70s movie. It came out in 1980
After this one a, classic The Shining, excellent. Next in order, for atmospheric creepy and macabre weirdnesses, The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Original, Tobe Hooper, and last but not least. 1982 Amityville 2 the Possession, 💯🍿🎥🎃 all including, the Shining, pure Horror.

Kubrick tormented Shelly Duvall while filming the movie because he wanted her to be highly emotional at all times, he even told the crew to never console her when she was upset and she said in a more recent interview that she had days where she cried for 24 hours straight. People believe that making this movie is what triggered her mental health issues and eventually caused her to walk away from her successful movie career and she now lives in poverty in Texas.
Kubrick was known for filming scenes over and over like the stair scene that was apparently filmed 125 times, Scatman Crothers who played Dick almost didn’t take the role because he had heard about Kubrick filming scenes over and over and he didn’t think he could physically handle it because he was an old man and he was really worried about his death scene so Jack Nicholson spoke to Kubrick and got him to limit the scene to ten takes.
The kid who played Danny didn’t know they were making a scary movie because he was shielded from all the scary stuff and he only found out at the movie premiere.
Conspiracy theorists believe that Kubrick left a lot of clues in the movie that prove the theory that he helped the U.S government fake the moon landing by directing it for them, they point out things like Danny’s Apollo 11 sweater and some other things and there is a documentary here on TH-cam that goes through the movie and they point out all the supposed clues.
She hasn't acted in 20 years but has started production on a new movie. I just read about it this morning!

I also don't like this much version. There was a tv mini series that was closer to the book which i liked. I find this movie too much in your face madness as apposed to the slow descent into madness from the book. The wife in this movie version is way off from the book as well.
However, if i just ignore the book and see the movie as unrelated to the book, it works. I suppose it just kinda irks me that people think that this movie is closer to the book.
Anyway, just my two cents
I agree with you. I always felt this was more like 2 hours of watching Jack Nicholson acting crazy. And Shelly Duvall will always be Olive Oyl in my mind.

This movie had a lot of production problems:
Shelly Duvall lost most of her hair due to the stressful reshoots she had to film, 127 takes, to get the scene where she is swinging the bat at Jack Nicholson.
Kubrick and Duvall would be seen arguing about how her scenes should be filmed.
Nicholson slept on the set between scenes.
Scatman Crothers, whom played Dick Halloran, broke down crying after his scenes in the kitchen were filmed 88 times and asked "What do you want from me, Mr Kubrick!?"
A fire broke out near the set, where they were filming The Empire Strikes Back.
The hedge maze scene was the most brutal and most difficult scene to film as most of the crew would get stuck inside the maze for an hour.
Stephen King hated the final cut of the movie and claimed that Kubrick butchered the film by removing several important subplots. He vowed never to have Kubrick make any more films based on his books.
Dick being murdered at the end of this movie is one of Kubrick's changes that irritates the crap out of me. He rescues Danny and Wendy at the end of the book. Kubrick's excuse for the change was that he felt it was too commonplace. Sure, we see older black men portrayed in movies as heroes all the time, right? 😐
His actions did save Danny and Wendy though
@@eon14873 It was a Kubrick choice. He basically wrote out the hero of the story. Hallorann is able to get them out while Jack is fighting to maintain the boiler. Then boom, no more hotel, no more Jack. King hated the Kubrick ending. Doctor Sleep pays homage to both the book and the classic film.
