It goes without saying that TH-cam is a massive, swampy landscape over-saturated with far too many videos about gaming made by people with no ability to present a video or undertake basic research.
I hope you realise how much your videos are appreciated because of this. It's nice that someone takes the time to create professional, straight-forward videos about the history of the industry without weighing it down with ham-fisted humour, grating personalities or the constant desperate begging for subscriptions and comments. Please never stop making videos.

yeah but what about Sakurai, he has been through a lot with Melee, he worked CONTINUESLY, no breaks, he worked NON-STOP and thats why Melee is one of the fan favorites of the franchise. All Nintendo fan boys (like me) should feel bad for Sakurai :( and IF SOMEONE UNDER ESTIMATES MELEE SLAP OR PUNCH EM DIRECTLY IN THE FACE ;).

I'm convinced that Super Smash Bros. is one of the best products Nintendo has ever put out. It's basically a commercial for all their first-party franchises and some of their third party games. That's the power of branding right there.

I have never heard of Smash Bros til the gamecube. I was in the store with my dad, we were originally getting a PS2. Then I saw a screen with Smash Bros in it. I said to my dad, I wanted the gamecube instead. And I never regretted it. We still bought a PS2, a year later tho.

Gamecube's Melee reminds the gold standard in how to properly do a sequel. It captured the spirit of the original and improved upon it in every way. It's a wonderful, wonderful game.

Norman I dont know if ure gonna read this or not, but im sayin this anyway. Your channel is one of the most underrated gaming channels ive ever seen. The dumb masses rather watch a guy screaming and making zero sense than a straight person bringing actual brain food in form of game related entertainment. You diserve a medal for making learning be so fun by using video games. I was always under the impression that u would follow a career on history, but i say get ur stuff out there cuz this channel should be 5 times more popular than it is. Probably the only ive never seen apeal to a single bad word instead by smart and creative. The point is your material is gold and u should try more things to make ur channel noticed. All in all keep up the videos. No pressure of course u do em for as long as u want but do consider that what u do, isnt being done by anyone else. Congrats norman and good luck

The day after I finish a Smash retrospective, you start one!
I loved the story of how it started as a side project, and you really can tell it with 64. It slightly has the feeling of an underground fight club, owing to Nintendo's hesitancy to let the heroic Mario uppercut Pikachu in his adorable little jaw..

My friends and I had our own house rules for a variation on Home Run Mode. Use Yoshi and beat the bag up as much as possible before launching it, but rather than using the bat or any other standard attack, have Yoshi eat the bag and then poop it out as far as possible! Obviously it's not going to go nearly as far, but it's still a fun challenge as far as timing is concerned!

I saw that commercial the exact same way when I was around that age. I was like, "WHAAAAA, Mario, Kirby, Pikachu, Fox and Link in the same game?!"
Also, how are you able to get that depth of field effect with your camera, making the background blurry and getting yourself more in focus. I've been trying to get that effect with my camera but I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly.

    • @GotCamel
      @GotCamel 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

To get the bokeh with your camera, you open the aperture as wide as possible (i.e. f2.8, f1.4 etc) have someone sit close to the camera and set the focus point to their eyes. The camera will focus on the person but because the aperture is so wide it will make everything else blurry. Just make sure you don't move towards or away from the camera too much or else you'll go out of focus. Adjust your lighting, ISO and have fun! I hope this helps!

Pretty much everything you said is spot on with what I've witnessed from when this franchise was pretty much an indie game to one of biggest names in games today. I still remember seeing that Smash Bros commercial as a kid and was blown away that such a game existed and had to have it. I still remember myself in the backseat of the car with the box in my hand just ogling at it.
I couldn't tell you how many weeks I've spent playing the absolute shit out of Melee. Personally, I think Melee is the better out of the four in terms of content, ambition, and 'love' put into the game, probably nostalgia is factored in as well. Each one is different in what they wanted to do with it, and I respect that and thoroughly enjoy each one as they are. However, Melee just has a special place in heart.
I look forward to part 2!

I LOOOVED the competitive nature of fighting games within the lost cities of Atlantis known as : Arcades! I still remember being 11 yrs old and putting my quarter on the bottom of the screen in the corner of the challenger. Meaning, a player on a win streak was allowed to keep his spot, taking on all comers, until losing. As a challenger, you placed your quarter in line, wait for your turn to fight, so on & so forth. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Capcom vs Marvel... The list goes on.
    I miss the 90's!

It’s appropriate that you used SNK fighting games cause Terry would eventually be a DLC fighter for Smash Ultimate

Im thinking on playing all smash games on emulators before i can afford to play ultimate, i never got to play a smash game for not having console but the fan game super smash flash was a big part of my childhood, and watching this video really hypes me to try and play from the very first one

I first saw Smash Bros in a magazine. It was a small image of the game but at the time it wasn't scheduled for release in the states. I just hoped it would come over here. 4 player was a blast.

Hope you’ll do a “History of Super Smash Bros. part 3” video with not only “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate”, but everything that happened between “Smash 4” and “Ultimate”. Both the good (the DLCs and announcement trailers) and the bad (the passing of Satoru Iwata (R.I.P. Iwata-San)).

Norm (can I call you Norm?), Your Channel is probably my favorite channel on TH-cam. NO I am not saying that as JUST a fan of Retro Gaming, but as a fan of Gaming History. (Between us, I've been trying to get a video camera so I can do a Gaming channel on ALL Things Gaming, modern and Retro), and I was gonna just tell gameplay and opinions, but then I saw your channel and thought "why didn't I think to throw in gaming history?" I'm not going to try and steal your idea (and your subscribers and views), but I am a fan. Thx for your show, and happy gaming!

You are so lucky to have been able to just see a comercial and be able to get it. Also to be able to keep your consoles and old games, i had to sell mine to buy a new one, and it would have to be in like my bday or christmas

I remember very vividly seeing a picture in Electronic Gaming Monthly of DK doing his taunt on the super Mario bros. castle stage and immediately making a mental note of Super Smash Bros. I never owned my own copy of the original though until I got it on the wii vc. A couple of my frneds had it though, and I have owned all of the newer ones except Sm4sh on Wii U.
