    Coopworth project by FMD Architect allows an architect to design a house on a remote island. Designing and building a remote house comfortably nestled on 120 hectares of arable land on Bruny Island, Tasmania, Coopworth interacts harmoniously with the site’s climate and resident sheep. In building and designing a remote house, FMD Architect has taken great care to deliver architecture and interior design that welcomes congregation and connection, despite the home’s secluded location.
    Designing and building a remote house to celebrate the land’s history involves a nod to the faded red iron shacks dotted across the island. Coopworth by FMD Architect juts from the soil in garnet corrugated cladding - an innovative reimagining of the traditional Australian farmhouse. Reverence to the home’s setting is felt when observing the panorama of green pastures afforded by vast bay windows, boldly framing the vista while acting as passive heat and light sources.
    Designing and building a remote house presented a unique opportunity to the architect to embrace the use of a local, sustainably sourced material - resident sheep’s wool, cleverly used as insulation. Fluffy fleece peeps through clear corrugated polycarbonate over the dining area to remind houseguests of the intimate connection to arable land and agriculture.
    Further emphasising connection is the deft insertion of beds tucked cosily in private nooks and bordering the home’s expansive windows. Inviting familial bonding for the client’s extended family was FMD Architect’s focus when building a remote house. The home feels humble at first glance, yet roomily sleeps 20 - the experience reminiscent of the classic “sleep out”.
    Orientated ideally to display a breathtaking vantage at every turn, a house tour reveals the sparkling bay and mountain ranges that envelop Coopworth in its rugged, natural setting.

    Such a thoughtful design with unique features. Love the sleeping beds by the windows. I can imagine that the sunrise and sunset views must be quite captivating. Love the use of passive solar to ensure warmth. Love the lack of cutters and the care in designing a house which is low maintenance and will not easily deteriorate or won't deteriorate at all. There is a beautiful simplicity to the design and a richness in the design.

    Kudos for using the “Terrain” colour of the colourblind corrugated cladding outside. A most unusual colour and a welcome departure from the usual narrative of modern architecture these days. Also the asymmetry of the home adds interest visually and those red bricks compliment the corrugated iron very well indeed.

    The sites that all of these homes are built on are simply amazing. Beautiful home. Modern, but cozy. The woodwork (never would have thought that was plywood; obviously a high grade plywood) and the brick work is exquisite, I'd like to have had a mention on that cool firebox, that can probably. heat the entire house! LOL Looking forward to the next reveal.

    This house is pretty awesome. Everything is so simple yet enough. I mean what the hell they are doing in "modern" houses sanding the walls the painting then sanding probably again 😂 No unnecessary labour, that's what we need. I guess It's the same problem as everywhere else. People come in real estate development not to create amazing environments for people but to make some bucks. So sad. But It's getting better I think, people begin to realise what is going on

    • @kevinwualmanzar3191
      @kevinwualmanzar3191 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmmm... I am not sure of the specifics of this project, but I'd say look for double or triple-glazed windows (they probs used double). The views won't really be affected as glass is pretty transparent these days! If I was working on this project, I'd probably do triple-glazed (air filled is OK), since they have so much window area! It will help the house from feeling cold. The frame doesn't matter as much, but I imagine they used metal frames since the designer said they wanted durable materials. Usually all these are condensed into a thermal performance value (U-value or R). Higher U is worse, but higher R is good, so you can compare when shopping for windows.

    • @kevinwualmanzar3191
      @kevinwualmanzar3191 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess also for reference: most skyscrapers have double-glazed with metal frames, but recently in some cities have been bumping up to triple-glazed because TBH double-glazed is inadequate when you have that much glass. Also applies to houses with a lot of glass like this one. :)

    I feel like they needed to explain and justify that "no gutters" decision. Looks to me like with all that corrugated roofing they'll be encased in pounding sheets of water during a downpour. All that water force being repeatedly directed at the exact same place on the ground will quickly erode a canal around the perimeter of the house. This can actually cause real problems over time. Especially without pronounced eves, they're directing a lot of forced water along the foundation.

      I think it's a cabin, so they don't need PV panels and their own rain water reserves ? Just a guess and the same question goes for all houses on the island, but looking at a map there are roads, hotels, regular ferry services to the next mainland city 3 kilometers away, 30 km from Hobart, so delivery services should be easy to organize.

    Taste is subjective, I know, but I dislike the colour of the house, inside and out, as it feels gaudy. Given the amount of light in the home, internal vines or pot plants may assist with this. It does not feel as well integrated into it's surroundings as it could.
    I understand the desire for low maintenance but I would certainly consider trees, for shade, wind protection, to assist in preventing soil erosion and encouraging birdlife. Not enough or any genus/species to ruin the view though. Obviously leaves in roof guttering are not an issue here. I''d love to hear a drainage engineer's perspective on this.

    Am I the only one that utterly hates it?
    Hideous colour, horrible, soulless interior. I appreciate the skill and design but honestly, I think it’s possibly the ugliest house I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a visceral dislike for a modern build before. Plywood interiors are such a ridiculous fad. The red brick sections are completely unforgivable. I do not think this property will age well at all.

  • @purpurina5663
    @purpurina5663 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Huh, I didn't expect to like it this much from the thumbnail. It may not be an obvious "dream house" but the respect for the place and the materials, and the need to be maintenance free, have been articulated perfectly, and I appreciate that. I also think it will age well, which isn't always the case in more bare spaces.
    The only thing I would correct is the lighting -unfiltered from the sides, or directly from above, creates unpleasant shadows for the dwellers and spoils the warmth.
