This is a demo. The studio version is a bit different. The live version with Byrne playing acoustic and accompanied by a ghetto blaster is fantastic. I highly recommend Crosseyed and Painless Live at Rome 1980. One of the greatest liver performances ever.
The ghetto blaster is a prop. The actual drum track is played on a Roland 808 triggered by the sound guy. It's the opening number of Stop Making Sense, which is one of the best concert movies ever.

Brilliant in its Stage Design and Execution. As far as Concert Videos go, this production has no equal. While viewing this Concert may spoil you for 1st Reaction pieces, you will get a Musical Education in less than 2 hours, and give you an idea of just how empty your life had become before you discovered

There is a better (IMHO) version of this song. Offhand, I can't remember what album it's on. These guys grew up at CBGB's with The Ramones/Blondie/Sex Pistols. In that era.
Talking Heads 77 has the original. Also, a good version on Stop Making Sense.
Talking Heads 'Stop Making Sense' is probably the best live show ever commited to film.
It works best as a whole. So if you want to watch some songs from it (Life During Wartime and Burning Down The House were recommended on another comment), watch, say, the first 4 or 5 songs first to get a feel of what's going on.

The videos are masterpieces and clearly show David Byrne at his weirdest, which is a good thing and the main reason I got into them back in the early 80s. Talking Heads definitely used the booming popularity of MTV and videos in general to it's full potential. The band flourished during that time period.

You've never heard of The Talking Heads??? Oh, my heart hurts. I saw David Byrne in concert last year at the urging of a friend who saw the concert in Mexico City. He messaged me the next day and said, "GO! You won't regret it." I went and was really really really glad I did. David Byrne is a genius.

Talking Heads were a unique, almost unclassifiable band. They were one of the original NYC 1976 punk bands from CBGB (The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Dead Boys, etc.) The singer/main songwriter is David Byrne. Other Heads song you must hear: "Once In A Lifetime," "Burning Down The House."

I saw this band in a tiny club right after this song came out. They were friends of someone we knew in our college town (Davis, California) so I only paid $2 to see them. I remember thinking that they were going to go far. Over the years they became, and have remained, one of my favorite bands. LOVE David Byrne.
“The name of this band is Talking Heads” has some great live recordings from early in their career. It’s worth the listen. I love the rhythmic interplay between the two guitar players during their early days.
LOVE Talking Heads! They are definitely their own thing though. Not really rock, not really punk, more of alternative mix of several genres. Check out “Once in a Lifetime “ and “Burning Down the House” for sure. David Byrne is absolutely a savant... and yes... missing a few marbles.

Once in a lifetime is a song that means a lot the older you get. Burning down the house is another great track.
It's hard to define Talking Heads music because it tended to bend genres. They are referred to most often as New Wave, but Talking Heads was deeply influenced by Punk. They were the opening act for The Ramones before they landed a recording contract. Psycho Killer is the song that put them on the map, I think it was released in 1977. The lead singer, David Byrne, is an odd duck. I think he's referred to himself as being borderline Aspberger's. Among my favorite Talking Heads songs are: Take Me to the River, Road to Nowhere, And She Was, and Once in a Lifetime. Great reaction guys!
it was released in 75 originally, reminds me more of the likes of mid seventies bowie and roxy music, also the voice sounds just like jonathan richman (another NY artist) from the time
Hey guys. Loved the video. Talking Heads were part of the punk new wave movement of the late 70s in New York City as you probably have read in other comments. Their music was an expression of the anxiety and paranoia of that time. They have a unique style which draws influences from the German krautrock band Can, African rhythms and spoken word poetry. I would love to see you react to the song “The Great Curve” from the Remain in the Light album. It’s a great song and blends all these styles together. Thanks.

Yeah! Talking Heads! As a college kid in the late ‘70s every club would play this song, & everyone would sing along! (drinking age was 18 back then). I saw someone else mentioned The Cars. YES!!! They performed at Live Aid in Philadelphia. Unique. Drive, Moving in Stereo, I don’t mind you coming here, My best friend’s girl, & so many others!
talking heads at its best is the most creative band ive heard. love them. especially their album fear of music is my fav. also their music is less formulaic so don't expect guitar solos necessarily. this is something completely different.
Their album "Remain in Light" released in 1980 was a huge step forward for the band, produced by Brian Eno, it's a stone cold classic. It's dense at times, lots of layers and includes African rhythms and electronica. 'Once in a Lifetime' was the big hit single but there isn't a bad track here.

That's why it's imperfect. :) I understood only 1/2 of the French lyrics, so is anyone fluent & can translate fully, I think 3rd verse? I think of this group as in between Iggy Pop & Bowie. As for history, these guys were in the early days (mid 70s) of the NYC punk scene with the Ramones, Blondie, Stooges, Dictators, later the Misfits and a bunch of other bands. It didn’t matter if you weren’t an Eddie Van Halen on the guitar. You just got up there and sung your heart out. RIP CBGBs!!
Great song by a great, influential group. The Talking Heads were big in the late Seventies and throughout the Eighties, with their biggest hits coming in the Eighties. "Burning Down the House" is one of their biggest hits, along with "Once in a Lifetime" "Life During Wartime" "Girlfriend is Better" and "Love-->Building on Fire". All of which and more are great songs to react to. But, to get the full experience, you should watch the award-winning concert film, Stop Making Sense, just for personal enjoyment. It's fun to watch, and the lead singer, David Byrne, is crazy AF, but awesome.
It's so fun hanging out with you enjoying music I grew up with. In JrHi and HS we would open a new album after school, rip a bong, and listen to it over and over, sometimes then focus on one song and play it 10 times. Here under quarantine it's like doing it again.

Yeah I don't know the version they played. The second verse was completely changed. It sounded like a demo, maybe it was from before the album 77?
This was the version before Brian Eno got his mitts on them and gave the band "the Talking Heads sound". He funkified them up and cowrote four of their albums.
(Eno also produced & cowrote three of David Bowie's best albums: the Berlin Trilogy. Eno also produced the two only masterpiece albums from U2. Eno matters to Rock.)
Even the album version is pre-Eno. The version everyone knows is from Talking Heads 77 which was produced by Tony Bongiovi.
Some good Talking Heads songs: Pulled Up, No Compassion, Warning Sign, And She Was (about taking acid), Stay Up Late, Crosseyed & Painless, Road to Nowhere, (nothing but) Flowers. ...(that should keep you busy!)
I always felt like Win's voice from Arcade Fire is very David Byrne. Also, the 'Stop Making Sense' movie is a MUST SEE requirement for any fan of music. It's beautiful
"Life During Wartime" I think would be a great one. It captures the same intense paranoid emotion in this song, but probably even better. Musically, "Burning Down the House" is great for a later song where the band started to get into some interesting textures and rhythms.
I love the Talking Heads. I don't know what version of Psycho Killer this is (not the original album cut), but it's good.
This song is from their first album, Talking Heads '77, and it sounds simple, rough and direct, but with hidden layers. They came out of New York art-school punk in the 70s, but also acquired influences from funk, from African rhythms and from electronic music (in collaboration with Brian Eno). True to their punk roots you won't find much grandstanding guitar maestro stuff with them. But they are very musical, their songs often complex and layered, different from the usual, verse/chorus standard way.
I believe lead singer and songwriter David Byrne recently received a late-life diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome, which does sort of fit with a lot of his songs. His lyrics are often a strange, alienating mix of quirky and troubling. But he has written the occasional sweet love song as well. _The Book I Read_ and _This Must Be the Place_ come to mind.
I think Talking Heads is a band to really work through. All their stuff is good. But I can really recommend _Burning Down the House, Life During Wartime, I Zimbra_ (Dada poetry set to music!) and _Once In a Lifetime,_ an absolute classic. _Warning Signs_ is a particular favourite of mine, a strange, creepy song, but musically very good.
And I want to add my voice to those telling you that their concert movie _Stop Making Sense_ (directed by Jonathan Demme) is one of the very best music films ever made.
Also, it is true that though David Byrne's vocal style has improved through his career he would never win prizes for singing. But his unique way of expressing himself vocally is a major part of the power of his songs.

The studio/album (Talking Heads 77) of this song is what drew me into the Heads in the first place. I was a junior in high school. We as a people had NEVER heard anything like this before. It was ground-breakingly detatched! One of my very favorite concert moments of my life was on the Stop Making Sense tour. I walked into the Long Beach Arena late and the whole place was JUMPING in unison to "Burning Down the House." Fun, fun times! 1984 Do also check out some of the Heads' happier tunes like "Love goes to a Building on Fire" (dig the horns) or even "Artists Only." I love the line and delivery of "I don't have to prove that I am creative!"

He has received Academy, Grammy, and Golden Globe Awards, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[1]😁💗💗 I hope you do some more. As previously mentioned... the movie STOP MAKING SENSE literally did make a life changing impact on my life at the time. ( for me....it helped me see percussion in a whole new light.) Excellent live performance movie!
If you enjoy Talking Heads you should do a full album review of their album Remain In Light, an 80's masterpiece.
To refer to a pop album as revolutionary may sound like hyperbole, but Remain in Light actually lives up to it. A stunning masterpiece.
We used to listen to Talking Heads before going out on patrol, when I was stationed in the middle east during the early 80's. Nothing like seeing a bunch of guys in camo dancing, playing air guitar with our rifles, and singing along to Psycho Killer. The locals thought we were demons, or at least possessed with one when they saw that. They tended to give us a lot of space after seeing us dance around to Talking Heads songs.

I saw them do this song at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium while I was high on mescaline and mushrooms, David Byrne in that giant suit freaked me out, lol.
In a similar vein to Talking Heads (but better) you should try some Devo. Especially early stuff like Uncontrollable Urge, Jocko Homo or Mongoloid.

I initially disliked Devo. "Whip It" was good but until many years later when I delved into their catalog I began to enjoy them much more.
I showed a 26 year old kid at work the video for "Joko Homo" one day. He said, "I thought this was a music video and you show me an episode of the "Twilight Zone."
Maybe A&A should start off with "A Beautiful World." It's nice and musical and can ease them into "Uncontrollable Urge." Then they can go deep if they enjoy those.
And check out the movie "Island of Lost Souls." It's a 1930's movie about the "Island of Dr. Moreau" starring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi. Bela has a speech about what the 'animal men' should never do and he ends every Law with the question: Are we not men?

I graduated in 1980 so I’ve listened to Talking Heads for years. I would like to suggest you listen to SWAMP by TALKING HEADS . Not everyone gets this kind of sound but if you went through your teen years listening to it, you got it. I also want to suggest listening to the BUZZCOCKS , EVER FALLEN IN LOVE. Good stuff. I guess it's been around with that many views though. Pretty cool how you guys reacted to a song I've heard thousands of times and played a version "new" to my ears 👍

If you liked this then you should look at the video of their ":Stop Making Sense" tour. That is one of the best concept concerts ever.
Check out TELEVISION-"Marquee Moon", they came out of the same NYC scene as Talking Heads, it's the new wave equivalent of "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner".

Talking Heads were one of the few bands that practically invented new wave. "Once in a Lifetime" is their signature song, and the video is a must watch. It's one of those songs and videos that changed rock music forever. Remain in Light is probably their best album and one of the greatest albums ever made. You may have heard the song "This Must be the Place" though that’s from a different album, I think Speaking in Tongues. “Psycho Killer'" came form the album Talking Heads 77, but this is not the version on that album. It's also one of their most famous songs. Theres also a good live version on The Name of this Band is Talking Heads, also one of their best albums and one of the great live albums by any band. They came up in the mid to late 70s with all the CBGB "punk" bands like the Ramones, Television and Patti Smith. They're one of those incredibly influential bands that got famous about 5 years after they had already done their best stuff. They were a really big band in the 80s right up until they broke up. But their best stuff is the stuff they did from 77 until around 1982 - 1983 -- like so many of the best bands of that era.
Burning Down the House is a good one from them to react to.

You don't compare this song to others you've heard. It just is. Not all songs are bangers at first. So Im betting on your coming to appreciate this masterpiece, AND this band with time. Music is funny like that

Yeah Talking Heads! These guy's were the leading edge of the alternative music of the late 70's and early 80's they have tons of music, lots of great requests but I'll add two road to nowhere, and she was. Don't be thrown buy the simplicity these guy's are great you gotta try a few more of their songs. Totally enjoyed it...♡

Good reaction, you’re right about his imperfect but makes it perfect voice. Yes, he’s lost his marbles but that’s art and doesn’t fit in the box. Talking Heads and Billy Idol were/are my 2 favourite bands/singers.

A theater near me played Stop Making Sense one night. So me and a gf went and saw it...the crowd was wild, cheering like it was a live show. Man...that's how to watch that movie. So good.

Think you should take into account that this was written and recorded in the early punk era when there was a much more 'anything goes/simplistic/raw' approach to music going on. That is why you are getting the raw estetic vibe from the track. I maybe wrong but if I remember correctly, it was also done on an 8 track recorder. They did go on to do some more 'polished' tracks that are worth checking out. 'And she was' 'Once in a lifetime' (check out the video for this if you get the chance. It's pretty crazy) 'Burning down the house' and the live version of 'Slippery people' to name but a few.
Guys, I am pumped that you are discovering Talking Heads. As a teen in the 80s, and a young adult after I was really into their music. You MUST delve deeper into their catalog of songs.
The 80's was the renaissance of alternative rock/punk/new wave. The bands put their hearts and souls into their music. They are genuine, wrote their own songs, and cared about people, made a connection to their fans and basically broke all the rules of what rock was doing up til then. Keep listening - Depeche Mode, Psychedelic Furs, New Order, Devo (WAY before their time), The Clash, Violent Femmes, Tears for Fears - it was a great time to live in. I was in my 20's during those years. Before Grunge seeped in the 1990's.
If you want to watch any bands from this time of British and some American music do a search for The Old Grey Whistle Test. It was a late night BBC music show that had some of the best bands on it. The presenter Wispering Bob Harris was a legend.
Talking Heads was one of the best bands in the 80's and (to me) they delivered one of the best, and certainly most iconic, concerts of the 80's, (to me) only second behind Queen live at live aid.
Every song they did during that concert, is 10 times better than any studio version they made, period.
The live show, ofc, is called "Stop Making Sense" and i strongly suggest watching the entire show, it starts of tiny, with no stage dressing, the singer with a boombox and his guitar, and each song after, the stage get filled with more dressing, more musicians, and more show, making it one hell of a show in total.
Highly recommend that concert!
The song Psycho Killer opens the concert film: Stop Making Sense (1999), except he does it as a solo to open their concert. You should check out this live performance. He's a one of a kind original! The film is considered one of the best concert films ever. Also, please listen to their iconic Once in a Lifetime (official video). Happy Listening!
