August 2020: Assessing the Conservation Status of the World's Ecosystems with the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems
ABSTRACT: The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) was developed to provide a coherent global framework for monitoring the conservation status of ecosystems. Since it was officially adopted in 2014, the RLE has seen application at local, national, regional and global levels across the world. Its impacts on environmental policy and practice range from conservation planning to legislation to regulation of industry, and monitoring biodiversity change at global scales. This webinar will provide an update on recent RLE progress and achievements, with emphasis on its applications.

Her research is focused on understanding and monitoring the patterns and processes of land use and land cover change through the use of Remote Sensors and Geographic Information Systems, with special emphasis on tropical forests and ecosystem risk assessments. She currently works as Director of Research in Provita, Venezuela. Irene has been a member of CEM’s Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) thematic group since 2014, joining its Steering Committee in 2016. Over the last six years she has had the opportunity to get involved with different aspects of the RLE initiate, including the continental assessment of the forest ecosystems of the Americas, building capacities around the RLE protocol and its applications throughout the world, provide technical support for national and local RLE assessments and the development of the first IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology.
