Why do the guards confiscate baseballs at the Tokyo Dome? -- MLB Opening Series in Japan

  • If you're hoping to catch a souvenir baseball in Japan, WATCH OUT for stadium security. The guards will come after you and demand that you return it -- not always, but sometimes. It's really weird, and it cost me an Ichiro Suzuki home run ball during batting practice.
This was the very first game of the 2019 season -- MLB's Opening Series between the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics, which was played on March 20th. It was also a mini-comeback for Ichiro who announced that he would retire after this series, so it was a BIG deal to see him out on the field.
The A's and Mariners opened the 2012 season at the Tokyo Dome. I was there for that as well, and as I promised in the video, here are my blog entries about it:
    zackhample.mlbl...

Thanks for watching and don't forget to check me out on Instagram (@zack_hample). Lots more videos coming soon.

    1. Bring a decoy ball.
    2. Catch HR ball during batting practice
    3. Switch balls
    4. Give decoy to security.

It's a cultural difference as to why guards take the balls. It's to discourage people from putting themselves at risk of injury and to prevent any fighting for a ball. This is not the case at all Japanese stadiums however though fighting for balls is still not as pronounced as in American baseball.

Lot's of people asking about the masks. There is almost no pollution in Japan, so its not that. Many people wear them when they feel even the slightest bit sick, so they don't make others sick by coughing. Girls wear them more so, partly because they don't want to put on makeup, so its kind of a cover up in that sense. If we were in China, masks are usually for pollution reasons, but Japan its a fascinating cultural thing that has evolved over time. Sometimes even healthy people put them on "just in case" for sickness

I have a Carl Yastrzemski home run ball from the 1967 season that I caught when I was 7 years old and that he later autographed. My Dad confiscated it and then presented it to me on my 16th birthday in still pristine condition but now in a hand made wood and glass case along with his 1946 Ted Williams home run ball that he caught when he was 14 and later got signed. My Dad got a photo of me catching the ball just like his Dad got a photo of him catching Ted William's ball. My Mom was at home listening to the game on the radio and remembers the announcer saying "some kid got that one." I have shadow boxes I've since put both in that include autographed photos and baseball cards of each of those players along with the photos our Dad's took to prove provenance. . They are among my prized possessions.

By the way for everyone wondering about why they have to return the ball to the security, it is because it’s during pre-game practice. They will “recycle” those balls for the next game. It’s better that way so they can cut the cost, and it’s also eco-friendly.
Any fan can get the ball during the actual game. Unless it’s like an important homerun ball (like a milestone). In that case, the fan will probably get something in return (like a signed ball or a bat).

During practice time→ most of the time YES (unless noted on video)
During match → NO , unless if it's a special homerun (ex. 100th home run for that player) or player wishes to have it back.
During practice time, they use baseball that can be homerun easily (for adjustment?), so they will have to collect it normally.
